National Laughingstock: Our Legion of Illegal Leakers Now Tell Us That a Senior WH Official Close to the President is a Key Target of the Probe

The law enforcement investigation into possible coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign has identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, showing that the probe is reaching into the highest levels of government, according to people familiar with the matter.

The senior White House adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, according to these people, who would not further identify the official.

Some lefty claims it's... Jared Kushner.

I was just saying that the Special Counsel investigation has already morphed into a general investigation of the finances of close advisers to Trump, even before Mueller himself is up to speed.

Maybe Jared, but I wouldn't rule out Bannon or Mnuchin. Those guys were at Goldman Sachs and did Hollywood financings and Mnuchin was involved with a mortgage lender.

When you have business people who have been involved in many complicated financial transactions over a long period of time, it really can become a case of Stalin's "show me the man and I'll show you the crime."

No, it made no f***ing sense whatsoever, and wouldn't have, even back when there was some semblance of an actual lawful govt. staffed by actual public servants. The Beltway, and with it the country, have become a farce.

So I just marveled at the utter silliness of the idea without comment.

And now I'll limit comment to pointing out that, um, it would appear the existence of a special counsel - shockingly - will have no effect on the ceaseless infowar against Trump. Imagine.

-----------------

Mueller's role here is to be the public face of this Dem/GOPe takedown of Trump. Nothing more than that.

Remember how Comey was pushed out on stage and made the public face of the whitewash of the Clinton classified info breaches? He was not the AG or even a Deputy AG. Why him? Because he was the best person they could put out there in front of the camera in terms of perceived integrity.

This effort against Trump has been and will continue to be driven by the same crew of Obama/Clinton loyalists at the FBI and lawyers to be hired at the Special Counsel's office.

77-year old Mueller's role is to come out periodically to step in front of the cameras and intone terrible things about Trump in a deep, measured, authoritative voice.

Correction. You know, like they did not care about obamas abuses for 8years, kissed up the entire time, but suddenly care about states rights and exact following of law now for trump, unless it would mean ditching sanctuary cities, of course. I'm done with the left, they need total removal from this nation. 100 percent denial of even citizenship rights. Deportation to Syria is an option, for starters...

And he and Sessions had better be working on something to address the collapse of public institutions (the insubordination and law-breaking, revelation of classified info). It's now out of control.

When Dubya, inexplicably and inexcusably, failed to find and prosecute the felons involved in the compromise of US/allied surveillance programs - in time of war, a very hot war - it was a major blow to the country.

It's now verging on Third World chaos and lawlessness. And if Trump doesn't pick a Patton-esque FBI director to restore order, his failure will make Dubya's small in comparison.

The right is gobsmakingly in denial naive about the left and their resolve. 213 Ignoramus, you touch on a key legal mechanics issue I've been wondering about.

How exactly does an investigation proceed when it is centered on ..... well, nothing, as far as we know.

What sort of even potential criminal acts are in question? How do you argue for warrants or court orders? "Your honor, the state has reason to believe something might have happened" ??

The counter-intelligence investigation, as silly as that was, of course would work differently. A criminal investigation can't be based on references to vague unsubstantiated speculation of some kind of unspecified "collusion".

Well, at least in the US, as it was once was. We now see a judicial system that is as lawless or unhinged or corrupt as Mexico's or Nigeria's or Uzbekistan's, depending on the day and issue.

Well...yes and no. Very well made, visually interesting and a call-back to the chilly nihilism of Alien. I had reservations about the Cabbage Patch-faced leading lady but she and Danny McBride were the only standout characters in a cast of expendables. Fassbender had dual roles as two versions of the same mandroid; the later model had inhibitors installed. Let's face it, Fassbender looks synthetically perfect in real life, and kinda evil.

But....mehhhhh. It's just aliens picking off meatbags in space, and there's no emotional reward for surviving the roller coaster ride like there was with the first two films.

And while we're on the topic of nihilism: the next Planet of the Apes movie. Why am I supposed to cheer on the demise of my species? "Only man kills for sport!" - gibbon please. Humans don't bite faces off either.

248 Trump can and should appoint a hard rightist for FBI and defend it without apology. There is no point in winning if u allow Dems to moderate any pick, scotus or otherwise. Dems know full well tons of people and him likely have some ties not bad ones-per se with Russia. That was the whole strategy of the Russia narrative. You eventually will find some meaningless connection but the lemmings will eat false claims of it being dirty after all the preparation of the drumbeating. They know this, and making a charge narrative that is actually very broadly unspecific was by design. Tons of other wealthy people on the left will have similar innocent connections if doing international business and relations, but that will not be how the wash compost reports on any of these. The goal is to muck up the works and defang any agenda by distraction, so he cannot govern effectively, then wait him out of office, removal need not actually occur.

289 It doesn't answer any of those questions. The studio overruled Scott going on with the Prometheus plot line and said change it and make a reboot of the first Alien film for the kiddies to get caught up on.

Something was written about 2 movies being dedicated to the Engineers in the future I think after one more of these stupid marine vs alien films. They are supposed to do like an Aliens II then go back to the Prometheus plot line.

Dumb shits. Even my wife who hates scifi always talks about Prometheus.

290 I don't order things from Amazon anymore because my husband works there. It is a very employee unfriendly place to work. The demands on the employees are unreasonable, IMO, and it's an incredibly long day with not enough money for what they do, IMO. However, if he owns WAPO it's just another reason not to support Amazon.
---

I rarely buy things from Amazon, and instead, have gone more with Ebay. I've only had one issue with an order, and that was solved to my satisfaction.

I'm glad Amazon is able to provide a job for your spouse, and I hope he's able to transition into something better.

Other "WTF?" speculation on all the wondrous possible benefits of a special counsel's investigation -

* now Trump can pick any FBI director he wants? Huh? No bearing whatsoever. As baseless and baffling as the "Russian collusion!!" nonsense

* now the leaks can be investigated? Huh? There are already laws on classified info, there's already a federal law enforcement agency (the FBI) with the responsibility to investigate such crimes

If people are going to try to make lemonade from lemons, at least put some work into it. This kind of stuff is just stupid.

301 Senator Grassy .. Just last week said that neither the President nor any of his officials are under investigation, according to Comey and his second.

This keeping the bs alive...just saw a clip of the Harvard JOO lawyer and said collision with foreign country isn't a crime... If that were true Reagan collision with Iran to release the hostages only after he was President would have been a crime.

That Trump could ask Russia to try help him win the election and it still wouldn't be a crime. The only thing would be if he could prove they were involved in hacking of the emails. Which if read the hacking and phishing attempts it was 100 hundreds of politicians and ranged for over a two years.

This NYT and WP doing hit pieces to try discredit President Trump before his foreign trip, minimize him.

And the special councillor can only charge or investigate someone of a crime .. And collusion isn't a crime, if it were trump would be investigated for his links to Britain, like the guy campaigned for hm, talking to Russians or having investments with numerous people isn't a crime.

Notice that Comey got the boot and NYT's and WP ratcheting up the hit pieces , almost like he was a protector.. ..

Rove said that any investigation with have "persons of interest". He pointed out its a long way from person of interest to a "target".

He said that WaPo and both major UK papers say it's Jared.

Which he said would be normal, since Jared spoke to multitudes of foreign officials, during the campaign and during the transition as would BE NORMAL in that a new administration would be trying to forge relationships. He also pointed out that Jared had filed his financial forms with the Feds, realized within two weeks that he had left off several past contacts and deals and immediately notified the FBI and other agencies and filed an amended financial report.

By the way, has anyone pointed out that John Podesta, who was the chairman of Hillary's presidential campaign is a principal in the Podesta Group, whose brother Anthony, another member is registered as a lobbyist on behalf of Sberbank of Russia, a major Russian bank. It is accused of being a funnel for international leaders, including Vladimir Putin , to use to stash funds around the world.

This was reported via the Washington Examiner in April of 2016, after the discovery of "the Panama Papers" which revealed the scheme.

But, Trump, Russia.....

374 "Ignoramus, you touch on a key legal mechanics issue I've been wondering about.
How exactly does an investigation proceed when it is centered on ..... well, nothing, as far as we know."

I'm not a criminal law guy, so this is based on basics.

You need something like probable cause to get a judge or grand jury to issue subpoenas, search warrants and to get you to testify. Else you're asking people to co-operate voluntarily.

The only crimes we have are the hacking of the DNC and the Podesta phishing. There's a federal finding that the Russians did it, but how do you find a connection to anyone in the Trump campaign?

You can spin something about Flynn, but it requires use of a unmasked transcript with an interesting provenance. But whatever Flynn said was after the election was over. So what collusion?

With Mannafort and Trump himself any connections to Russia were way before the election. Even if Trump had hookers piss the bed, what collusion?

So I don't see how any investigation progresses.

There's really not a lot to investigate, as I see it.

Where am I wrong?

FYI, Scalia's Ghost and I have a fundamental disagreement about the extent of Mueller's investigative mandate, and his intent. I'm not sure I'm right, but I truly believe I am

415 The mere fact anyone would even seriously investigate these claims is proof positive of how far we have sunk. Given the stated nonexistent by fair assumption sources, it should not get any coverage. anybody can make up stuff like this without any truth at all. This should b obvious even to leftists strung out on crack of wanting to get trump. Yet, it will probably get a billion hours of coverage. The simple reality is, the press would not be this lucky this easily if even he was guilty of stuff, which should occur to anyone with any sense of reason. Amazingly, somehow tons of "new" news zingers seem to surface almost on cue, and nobody asks how likely that is even if he had did something wrong? It's like watching to staged reality shadow of a storage locker treasure hunt that always seems to have a unit that pays off, at the end of the show. 420 You need something like probable cause to get a judge or grand jury to
issue subpoenas, search warrants and to get you to testify. Else you're
asking people to co-operate voluntarily.

_______________________________________

Grand Juries issue subpoenas, though it is initially an administrative function between the investigating agency and the US Attorney's Office (at least federally). PC is not required for a subpoena, and subpoenas are only good for third party records (your bank and phone records are third party records when subpoenaed from the institution or provider) or testimony.

At some point, the records are "returned" to the GJ. The standard of proof for the initiation of a grand jury investigation is lower than PC, but requires some substantiation.

PC, or Probable Cause is the level necessary for search warrants, arrest warrants, wiretaps, etc. Basically, anything protected by the 4th or 5th amendments. Once you obtain all your evidence, you present your case to grand jury and obtain an indictment, or make a criminal complaint to a judge.
