Sean Davis: Comey Has a Long History as a Sneaky Political Operator More Loyal to Chuck Schumer Than the AG and President He Served During the Bush Administration

Must read.

Remember when John Ashcroft had taken ill and James Comey kinda-sorta just decided that he was now the AG? As a background to this, Comey had "ruled" that the Bush Administration's "Stellar Wind" program to detect terrorist threats was illegal, and... well, I guess Comey did not want his "ruling," made as a subordinate several steps down the actual command chain, to be "overruled" by his mere legal, constitutional superiors.

"[I] told my security detail that I needed to get to George Washington Hospital immediately. They turned on the emergency equipment and drove very quickly to the hospital," Comey testified. "I got out of the car and ran up -- literally ran up the stairs with my security detail."

"I was concerned that, given how ill I knew the attorney general was, that there might be an effort to ask him to overrule me when he was in no condition to do that," Comey said.

Comey's use of the phrase "overrule me" is especially noteworthy, given that the authority he referenced belongs not to the deputy attorney general, but to the attorney general himself. However, unbeknownst to anyone at the White House on that day, Comey had assumed for himself the authorities attendant to Ashcroft's position. Rather than personally informing anyone at the White House, including the president, the vice president, the White House chief of staff, or the White House counsel, the Department of Justice sent a mere fax to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue noting the change in power. For some reason, the newly designated acting attorney general didn't feel compelled to personally inform any of his superiors that he was now a cabinet official.

Davis then turns to Comey's own narration of this event, which reads like a lurid retelling of the Arthur Legend, with a death-stricken Uther Pendragon nodding to James Comey and saying "You the man now, Dog."

"And Attorney General Ashcroft then stunned me. He lifted his head off the pillow and in very strong terms expressed his view of the matter, rich in both substance and fact, which stunned me 00 drawn from the hour-long meeting we’d had a week earlier 00 and in very strong terms expressed himself, and then laid his head back down on the pillow, seemed spent, and said to them, 'But that doesn’t matter, because I'm not the attorney general.'

The land is Wounded and without a King, Arthur. Now you must Heal the Land.

[…]

And as he laid back down, he said, 'But that doesn’t matter, because I’m not the attorney general. There is the attorney general,' and he pointed to me, and I was just to his left. The two men did not acknowledge me. They turned and walked from the room. And within just a few moments after that, Director Mueller arrived. I told him quickly what had happened. He had a brief -- a memorable brief exchange with the attorney general and then we went outside in the hallway.

Comey's testimony was designed to smear Alberto Gonzales as unfit to continue serving as AG (apparently John Ashcroft's You The Man Now Dog crowning of Comey was not entirely permanent). His testimony was dropped as a bombshell, without warning -- arranged by Chuck Schumer's top aide Preet Bharara, you know, the guy who's been protecting Governor Andrew Cuomo forever and then suggested that it wasn't legal for Trump to fire him as a US Attorney.

"It felt to me that Jim's loyalty was more to his friend Preet Bharara and to Chuck Schumer," Gonzales later wrote in a memoir.

Meanwhile, Trey Gowdy hints at... something, I legitimately have no idea what, regarding Comey being compelled, for some reason, to exonerate Hillary Clinton-- I don't get this because the suggestion is that this has to do with Bill Clinton's tarmac meeting with Loretta Lynch. Why this compels him to exonerate Hillary, I have no idea.

Actually, Gowdy seems to be talking about why Comey arrogated to himself the powers of the AG to make the decision, not why he exonerated Clinton.

Hm -- Comey arrogating the powers of the AG to himself without any legal basis for doing so. Seems like a common move for him.

By the way, Comey was an important figure in the investigation of Bill Clinton's 11th-hour pardons of major campaign donor Marc Rich. Comey found that while "proper procedures" for the pardons were not followed, there was no evidence of a quid pro quo.

Sound familiar? No intent, you mean?

Comey and his friends seem to have a long history of White Knighting for Clintons.

14 Saw, noted and commented on that weird WZ/Gowdy thing in last night's ONT, ace.

As you say, even based on fragmentary descriptions, the logic on that is hard to see.

In any case, there are quite a few people who have regarded Comey as a lightweight arrogant jackass with serious personality problems and no clue as to his duties or public service since he first came on the scene.

I recall the snickers and contempt from people - far more experienced and expert in the substance of the topic than Comey - from his first headline thing, the bedside idiocy with Ashcroft.

As I've noted elsewhere the last few days, Comey's fairly typical for Clinton/90s-era appointments - not very fit or able, and with bizarre notions of his own abilities and apparently no awareness of his actual duties and responsibilities.

27 Anna Puma,

I have the definitive answer you wanted on the loss of HMS Arc Royal. Short answer, the Med U-Boat Enigma net was still dark to the British. U-Boat inchoppers to the Med from the Atlantic were listened to (but not in real time) while in the Bay of Biscay. Once in the Med the Brits were clueless without a Huff Duff signal. And no signal from the U-boat before the attack, since it was so close to the CHOP line.

HMS Arc Royal was adequately screened before the torpedo hit, and the U-Boat was given a pounding by the escorts (ISTR 130+ depth charges).

The DC failure was a bigger problem.

34 Comey gave the Clintons a pass, but gave Martha Stewart hard jail time for deleting but then undeleting an e-mail and for doing a "humana, humana" when FBI agents braced her.

I knew something wasn't right about Comey back then.

Before becoming FBI Director, and after being a prosecutor, Comey did eight years in the private sector as the head lawyer at Lockheed and Bridgewater, and was on the board at HSBC. His background didn't fit any of these positions. I'd say he was hired and paid to help fend off investigations because of his federal prosecutorial contacts.

Bridgewater is the biggest hedge fund of all. I'm speculating they had issues like what hit SAC Capital and Stevie Cohen, which was the inspiration for the TV show Billions.

Just sayin'

42 Comey was complicit in Lynch's hamstringing the Hillary investigation, from the start.

Important point: He would never have held that press conference if Lynch hadn't been caught with Bill on the tarmac.

That made Lynch set up Comey "to make the decision." Comey didn't have the balls to go against Lynch and Obama, but he did need to cover his own ass for posterity and to maintain his image, hence the press conference.

So Comey was forced into doing something publicly on Hillary and chose a course that he thought we best for himself.

51 Ignoramus, your exposition makes sense, so you're not "wrong" in that sense.

The "wrong" part - and it's not you that's in question - was Comey choosing to do his ludicrous press event, with his hilariously absurd pre-indictment acquittal of Hillary and Co. based on his own re-writing of the relevant statute. Instead of resigning - which he should have done when the "investigation" was pre-cooked to fail with the bizarre immunity-granting and permission to destroy evidence, anyway.

So - resign and sing when the investigation was blocked from the start, or resign when the farcical investigation was completed - those were the obvious, honorable, and lawful choices.

Med and Atlantic boats had different Enigman nets, with different settings. The Germans did not sent U-boats into the Med for quite a long time. So no traffic to break. In the end, it was a disaster for the German U-Boats, because they could not maintain or repair the boats, and ASW got serious in the Med.

Before the Med net was broken, due to increased traffic and ISTR a dive in '42 on a sunken U-Boat for intel, the Med U-Boats had a lot of success. (HMS Barham and HMS Arc Royal for starters.)

At the time the Brits were fully into the Italian signals, allowing them to target Rommel's supply convoys and shipping.

In late 42-44 the Bruits made a specialty of nabbing weather boats in the North Atlantic to get the Atlantic code books. This is before that time.

This might actually become entertaining (though the backdrop of the collapse of our institutions, the disappearance of integrity, the insanity and perniciousness of the Dems and press, and the despicable uselessness of the GOP kinda put a damper on the mirth).

BTW, what is the US Code cite for "interference with an FBI investigation" - and how does it address off-hand comments and wishes - not orders - expressed by the FBI director's superior?

I was wondering about the Afrika Korps convoys, which I knew were savaged - Italian codes being broken explains that.

Which reminds me, somewhat related, what a catastrophe it was for Japan for their merchant fleet to use an easily-read low-level code ..... when our primary target shifted to precisely that fleet, especially tankers. One of the biggest mistakes by any power in the war.

135 42 Comey was complicit in Lynch's hamstringing the Hillary investigation, from the start.

It's just incredible that you have a ridiculous, self-parodying parade of non-scandals and press hysteria against a new president, and that president's party just sits there, or, on the margins, joins in.

Ultimately it's the voters, the country, that has produced this. The "swamp" very accurately reflects the civic virtue, awareness, education, and character of a majority of voters, overall. And others might help me out, but I see little prospect of 180+ GOP members of Congress/Senate being primaried and replaced by people with brains and character. 170 Seth Rich getting hit may or not be fake news, but consider the following:

If Rich was just a victim of random DC violence, why did the FBI get involved at all. Should have been a "routine" DC police matter. If the FBI indeed has his lap top, why? Why did they ever have it?

Why didn't the DNC denounce the murder of one of their own, and call for more gun control.

As I asked about before, the source of the FOX news story says that Rich forwarded 44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments, which matches the number that Wikileaks leaked. This could be fabricated by the source, but it'd be quite easy to compare whatever Rich is said to have forwarded to what Wikileaks leaked.

221 Regarding the earlier post about "bullshitter", the left are trying "persuasion", Scott Adams style. They have always done this and for the last eight years they used their biggest mouthpiece, Obama.

As he explained throughout the campaign, persuasion often involves novel language, such as "low energy". Something you never hear in politics. If it's controversial, it also gets the message far and wide.

The Left are desperate to make something "stick" to Trump, which tells you he is more popular than the polling propaganda merchants are letting on.

Last week they tried "cockholster", and this week it's "bullshitter". They need something negative to stick to him because he is virtually teflon (which is how he beat The Hag). Lest you think Obama and Colbert actually have original thoughts. Look for the next piece of persuasion in the next couple of weeks when "bullshitter" doesn't stick.

First, a hit - not a robbery - shot in the back, no valuables taken. Umm, excuse me, but that's quite rare for a street robbery, makes little sense (though there are possible explanations).

Second, the contacts with WikiLeaks. Dunno, but I don't think most people have such direct contacts. It's not "normal". And it appears these contacts were extensive, and confirmed by federal investigators (who shouldn't be talking, but ....).

Anyway, interesting enough to be examined closely. Not crazy conspiracy silliness, on its face, anyway.

I heard this morning that there is a Federal statute that states if a member of Federal Law enforcement believes there is an attempt to obstruct justice they are to immediately report that to the Justice Department. If that's the case either Jimmy didn't think what Trump said in February was an attempt at obstruction of justice or he once again didn't do his job. And I didn't hear anything about writing it all down on a super secret memo

163 What JJ said. And others have been noting, in their way, for a while now.

Which is what we're talking about, to actually change things.

Fen read the article at American Spectator. It is satire, done to demonstrate how easy it is to start a rumor and declare it fact.

The article says they have three "Anonymous" sources for their article. It's well done, in that it is not too over the top in the hyperbole so that it sounds believable.

And maybe it is...I think AS want to see if other news outlets will pick it up and parrot it without confirming it's true.

He articulates, on many key issues, the common sense of (still) a majority of Americans. In an entertaining and Trumpesque direct manner, of course.

And yeah, Andy McCarthy, who's outstanding on the substance of legal matters and terrorism, maybe the best public voice on these things, sure has the Midas touch on his high-ranking acquaintances. Fitzgerald, now Comey. Two examples of what's wrong and degraded about America's legal system and civic culture. Andy's a smart guy who seems to have a huge blind spot of poor judgement when assessing his peers.

*cracks knuckles*

Let me take a stab:

Trump knew that he was in trouble with the general election. He needed something to comfort the right wing of the Republican Party, ensuring that they'd vote for him no matter what. So he offed Scalia (instead of...I don't know...any of the others), knowing that a promise to replace him with a stalwart conservative jurist would lead to his win.

How did I do?

So Comey was a loyal soldier. Served under several presidents. Worked his way up the ranks by out preforming his peers. Served with distinction, didn't make waves, always on the right side of history, never charged with any failures, always accomplished his goals, and went to Boy Scouts on Wednesday Evenings where he made Eagle Scout.

He paid is dues, and earned his promotions.

383 The July 2016 press conference by Comey only makes sense if you consider that the Lynch DOJ was going to prosecute Hillary Clinton even if they had found her with a dead body.

The press conference was Comey's attempt to lay out the facts so it could generate some breath of outrage. Unfortunately, only the Hillary camp managed to generate any outrage.

385 Comey's latest testimony reminded me of a phase my daughter went through when she was in junior high and starting out her then interest in theater (she dropped it when she went to college). The difference was that after the pathos laden monologue replete with agitation and twitching, the then 14 year old daughter burst out into a belly laugh. I kept expecting old hang-dog Jim to burst out laughing after the very bad ham acting. But he didn't.

390 Really sleazy guy(s). The lot of them.

What is really beginning to get to me is how we are continually lied to. Remember how Comey was sold as one of the good guys -- by both sides. I am angry right now and can't bring them all the individuals to mind, like John Roberts, Good guy. Top Men. Only they are not, and haven't been for years and all these people who have been in office and in the swamp for years know it. What a sad, and sorry lot we have. It truly gives me pause.

And I spent a lot of time in WDC and even the surface sleaze was disgusting.
