Was a Murdered DNC Official Sending Emails to Wikileaks?

I usually wouldn't give a post such a lurid headline, so full of Intriguingly Dangled Questions, but that's what the media has taught me to do.

There's a little confusion on who the private investigator making these claims is working for. He's frequently represented as the family's private investigator, but they have kinda shot that down (sort of) by clarifying he's being paid by an unnamed third party.

I don't know the truth. Trying to speculate here to see if both stories can have some truth in them: Let me guess he's being paid by a politically-interested third party, and has had some cooperation from the murdered DNC official's family, so he can be said, broadly, to be working "on behalf" of the family, but his actual client is someone else.

The family is distancing themselves from his claims and in fact contradicting them, per Buzzfeed:

The family of murdered Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich on Tuesday strongly rejected reports claiming he had been in contact with WikiLeaks.

"As we've seen through the past year of unsubstantiated claims, we see no facts, we have seen no evidence, we have been approached with no emails and only learned about this when contacted by the press," spokesperson Brad Bauman told BuzzFeed News in an emailed statement.

...

[R]ich's family said in its statement that the private investigator was "paid for by a third party" and under his contract had been "barred from speaking to press" without explicit authorization from the family.

So the family does have a contract with him of some kind, even if he's being paid by someone else. And apparently the PI wasn't supposed to go to the press, by the terms of this contract.

But then, his actual client seems to be someone other than the family.

Rich, 27, was shot and killed early one morning in Washington in July of last year. He had been working on a DNC project trying to make it easier for people to find where to vote on Election Day.

WikiLeaks published thousands of hacked DNC emails soon after Rich's death, and conspiracy theories began to swirl after the organization offered a $20,000 reward for help solving his case. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange then raised further eyebrows when he spoke of Rich's death, saying, "Our whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material."

WikiLeaks backed off the claim, saying his statement "should not be taken to imply that Seth Rich was a source for WikiLeaks," nor that his death was connected to the leaked emails.

Police said in response that they believe there is no connection between his death and "his employment at the DNC." Since that time, Rich's family have also said publicly that they believe his death wasn't connected.

...

Rich family spokesman Brad Bauman, a Democratic political consultant by trade...

A little convenient. But kudos to Buzzfeed for actually reporting that, which most "Real News Outlets" would have supressed.

...told BuzzFeed News that the Wikileaks story just doesn't add up. Rich's job at the DNC had nothing to do with IT or internal cybersecurity...

Bauman said that evidence tying Rich to Wikileaks has been "nothing but hearsay or the insane rantings of conspiracy theorists."

Well, maybe. But the family seems to be a Democratic one, and maybe they don't like the idea that Seth Rich maybe, possibly could have been a turncoat against the Party.

With the denials out of the way, let's get to the claims. Which have been, as I've noted, largely denied by the family and their Democrat consultant spokesman.

From a local Fox affiliate news station:

t has been almost a year since Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich was murdered in the nation's capital. There have been no solid answers about why he was killed until now.

Rich was shot and killed last July in Northwest D.C and police have suggested the killing in the District's Bloomingdale neighborhood was a botched robbery. However, online conspiracy theories have tied the murder to Rich's work at the DNC.

Just two months shy of the one-year anniversary of Rich's death, FOX 5 has learned there is new information that could prove these theorists right.

Rod Wheeler, a private investigator hired by the Rich family, suggests there is tangible evidence on Rich's laptop that confirms he was communicating with WikiLeaks prior to his death.

Now, questions have been raised on why D.C. police, the lead agency on this murder investigation for the past ten months, have insisted this was a robbery gone bad when there appears to be no evidence to suggest that.

Wheeler, a former D.C. police homicide detective, is running a parallel investigation into Rich’s murder. He said he believes there is a cover-up and the police department has been told to back down from the investigation.

"The police department nor the FBI have been forthcoming,” said Wheeler. “They haven't been cooperating at all. I believe that the answer to solving his death lies on that computer, which I believe is either at the police department or either at the FBI. I have been told both.”

When we asked Wheeler if his sources have told him there is information that links Rich to Wikileaks, he said, “Absolutely. Yeah. That's confirmed."

Now here's the thing: Wheeler is not claiming he saw these communications with Wikileaks with his own eyes. He's saying he's got a source in the police department who says he saw such evidence on his computer.

So this relies on anonymous sources we can't talk to, alleged evidence we can't see, and innuendo that as of yet no one can prove, but merely suggest.

Sounds a lot like the Trump-Russia conspiracy theory the press is pushing with all its might.

A few stray thoughts:

1. I don't understand the motive for the murder, if we're talking about revenge-for-the-leaks as the motive. The leaks were already leaked. Further, this guy had committed a crime, so he could himself be arrested. Seems to me that if you wanted to punish the guy for his suggested betrayal, you could do so quite lawfully, and without all the dangers of an assassination.

2. On the other hand, I don't understand why a "botched robbery" results in a homicide, and yet the robber leaves behind the guy's wallet. That's real botch, isn't it?

3. And yet I also don't understand that if the instrument of this betrayal -- this guy's computer -- had juicy tidbits on it and such (which I'm sure people are hypothesizing), why would the successful assassin not take the computer or bleach-bit it?

Why was it allowed to fall into police hands, with the alleged communications between Rich and Wikileaks still on it?

4. It is strange and suggestive that Wikileaks head Julian Assange said of Rich's death, "Our whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material."

Maybe he was lying, and maybe he's trying to cover up the Russian connection.

5. If a botched robbery is hard to believe, so is a botched assassination -- Seth Rich was apparently still alive when he reached the hospital. I don't think he regained consciousness and could not provide any clues in his own death, but an assassin really wouldn't have left that up to chance, would he have? If you've come to kill someone, you kill him -- you don't injure him badly and then leave it up to God and emergency medicine whether he survives or not.

6. I find the Democrat spokesman's claim that Seth Rich did not work in cybersecurity, and had "no access to these domains," to be one of the silliest things I've ever heard. If the movies have taught me anything -- and I think on this point they're accurate -- you don't need to have, yourself, access to the "domains" you want to be a key operative in a hack. You just need to have physical access to the system to be hacked. You can then install some malware or deliberately click on a Trojan image that you've been told is in fact a Trojan image. That provides you the cover of just saying "I had no idea that was a Trojan" if anything is traced to you.

Anyway, the fact that this guy wasn't on the security end of things and did not have "access" to these restricted domains means nothing -- hackers themselves aren't working for DNC cybersecurity, and they don't have authorized access to sensitive domains either.

And yet -- there they are. Hacking away. Sometimes all it takes is a thumbdrive stuck into the right port.

I don't know what to think. All sounds a bit conspiracy theoryish to me, but apparently that's what "Real News" now consists of, so there you have it.

Pulitzer me.

Update: Citing a "federal investigator" (unnamed), Fox says it can corroborate Wheeler's claim:

Rod Wheeler, a retired Washington homicide detective and Fox News contributor investigating the case on behalf of the Rich family, made the WikiLeaks claim, which was corroborated by a federal investigator who spoke to Fox News.

Well we're going to have to get to the bottom of that, then, with Congressional subpoenas and all the rest of it -- and I expect Adam Schiff and Jake Tapper to be fulsomely on board with that.

The Democrats are committed to getting to the bottom of this Hacking of the Election, right?

18 The wikileaks info clearly came from someone who was in the DNC, and whose primary concern was the DNC collaborating with the Clinton campaign to defeat Bernie Sanders.

Seth Rich was in the DNC, and fits the profile of a Sanders supporter.

He was murdered in the time frame where these leaks were really starting to hurt Clinton - remember the "Russia hacked the election meme" was still to be born - and when there was a broad concern that the Bernie Bros would sit out the election if not go to Trump based on the activities of the Clinton campaign.

There is *NO* question that the Clinton campaign and the DNC had clear motivation to do something about the leaks - hell we have a Podesta email saying just that. And the stakes were extreme, from their perspective Hillary was probably going to win, but if the leaks continued it would cost them the Senate and House...

That certainly doesn't prove they were behind the murder, nor that Seth was the leaker, but what we know now is *EXACTLY* what we would know if this was the case.

No other scenario matches the observed facts:

Seth Rich was not robbed, and no other people motivated to do harm to him have been identified.

Wikileaks has identified their source as essentially someone who fits the profile of Seth Rich.

We don't have enough to arrest someone, but we have more then enough info to began a real investigation.

24 Also. Wikileaks may be backing away a little from stating outright that Seth Rich was one of their guys (there were two apparently), but they have said repeatedly that the source for the Podesta emails is "disgruntled DNC staffers" upset at the Sanders treatment by the party.

In no way are the Russians remotely involved, even if they did hack Hillary's server. This stuff is not Hillary sourced. Its Podesta. They are two separate and unconnected stories. There is no connection.

Further, Wikileaks put out a $25,000 reward for the capture of the killer of Seth Rich which is a pretty strange and random thing to do if he had nothing to do with them or their emails.

And finally, a family claiming they didn't hire this dude, he's not theirs.... but that he signed a contract saying he had to do what they said... is a bit odd, to say the least. One of these things is not like the other.

He took the DNC emails, sent them to Wikileaks because he was pissed about what he learned about Hillary/the DNC stealing the nomination from Sanders. Wikileaks hadn't published them yet. The DNC discovered the emails had been taken and someone (*cough* Clinton* cough*) ordered Rich silenced, thinking that would stop the emails (or maybe more damaging info) from being disclosed.

54 I am going from memory here, so may be wrong.

Did not Seth Rich have access, or his title, relate to new voter rolls or something for the DNC? It was long written, in the underground of news, that he had hard evidence of fraud. Presumably directed towards keeping the Hag on top vs Sanders.

He was in a bar, in a safe neighborhood, in the wee hours. He was on the phone with his gf who heard talking, he said he was ok. Video shows two men attack him, although the video, I don't think, was ever made public.

It was not a robbery,as stated over and over and oer again.

Rewards were posted. Wikileaks guy alluded, in August, without giving his name, that his whistleblowers know the danger. He was one who offered a reward.

Many of the Wikileaks were from Podesta, leading to much evil about him and many he was associated with. He also groused about the Hag, mentioned ties to the MSM, etc in his emails.

As I said below, twenty minutes after the Seth Rich news was released...which is no surprise to many who do not watch MSM for their news...WaPo released the intel bomb. Always keep in mind that Podesta is now part of WaPo.

But I am sure it is just a Clinton Coincidence, right?

Here is the most important news today on this, from a Fox News report:

"An FBI forensic report of Rich's computer -- generated within 96 hours after Rich's murder -- showed he made contact with WikiLeaks through Gavin MacFadyen, a now-deceased American investigative reporter, documentary filmmaker, and director of WikiLeaks who was living in London at the time, the federal source told Fox News.

"'I have seen and read the emails between Seth Rich and WikiLeaks,' the federal investigator told Fox News, confirming the MacFadyen connection. He said the emails are in possession of the FBI, while the stalled case is in the hands of the Washington Police Department.

***

"The federal investigator, who requested anonymity, said 44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments between Democratic National Committee leaders, spanning from January 2015 through late May 2016, were transferred from Rich to MacFadyen before May 21."

62 When the gun goes off, you split. A mugger doesn't retire off one 4AM mugging. You want to remain free to keep mugging.

it takes like 3 seconds to grab the guy's laptop and watch, which is the real problem here: why didn't they take it? Its not impossible the guy was robbed in a low crime area and yet somehow they didn't steal anything, it happens. But its a magnitude less likely than he was offed for what he knew/did, in my book. People just don't want to think that it could happen here.

66 arrest and jail does that too, right?
Not necessarily. Much higher costs (financial and political), and much higher risks. As well, you jail a guy for leaks, and you give him a platform to talk about the DNC screwing Dear Old Uncle Bernie. If he just drops dead in a park of a failed mugging, then the only people who notice sound like crazy people. Win-win.

Quite simply, if you don't believe the law will ever touch you (proven fact with that cabal) then the only limits on what you will do are your own ethics and convenience. Convenience weighs heavily on Side Evil for this one, and were there enough vestigial ethical traces to not take the risk? I can't say. Lucked out in one hell of a coincidence, if not.

102 And I say this as somebody who knows a guy who was the victim of a failed mugging, almost fatally due to related GSW. He struggled. In a not-entirely-suspect area. I think the wallet was claimed, but BSG's statement that the gun going off provides a spark for somebody to beat feet is pretty accurate. Mugging is *not* impossible.

What are the statistics, though? Do we really know if the unique odds for "guy out at 4AM getting mugged fatally with no take" are, compared with "guy who *just happens to have people gunning for him, out at night for unknown reason, getting rubbed out"? If he belongs to the second group in a proven way, his chance of having been slain for cause may actually be much higher.

Sure, the pure numbers of political assassinations are (probably) vanishingly small compared to failed muggings (also incredibly small), but with proper consideration of the victim, the odds on may be that it *was*.

If your son had been killed in a faux robbery in the heart of DC, in a "good" neighborhood, and nothing was done...would you hire a private detective if you could?

That laptop...will it be like the Weiner's and other Clinton aides and do a disappearing act? It is supposedly at the FBI (hello! Comey fired last week! Was not able to clean off his own computer files) or the local DC police. Keep in mind, as well, the DC police chief, a woman, "retired" within weeks of the murder and went to work elsewhere.

Lots of coincidences. Lots.

118 Did anyone else in the DC area hear Larry O'Connor interview Rod Wheeler this afternoon? Here are a few tidbits:

Wheeler stated that he was hired by Rich's parents to find out who murdered their son. So yes, he is working directly for them, according to him.

Wheeler said he doesn't know whether it was a robbery gone bad or connected to Wikileaks, and he doesn't care about the politics, he just wants to find Rich's killer as he was asked to do.

Wheeler said that the police say they don't have Rich's cell phone, the parents must have it. The parents told Rich they don't have it, the police must have it. Also, the DC police told Rich they don't have the laptop, and they don't know where it is, and the parents likewise don't have it.

Lastly, he said that the parents are distancing themselves from him for one of two reasons: a) they want to preserve the reputation of their son and b) they might be feeling threatened. He said the parents asked him not to speak about the case, but he took that to mean not to speak on their behalf, not that he shouldn't speak about it at all. I think he is splitting hairs there.

155 I saw a somewhat similar true crime doc. A woman was shot and killed in her garage in an apparent targeted assassination. Two men left their car in front of witnesses, walked to the victim's garage, shot her as she exited her vehicle, and ran without taking anything. Cops tore through her background looking for a motive. Turns out a couple of hood rats had damaged a bigger hood rat's car and they needed a part, a hood I think, from the same make and model. Victim drove by with the right; I.e., wrong, make and model. They followed her home intending auto theft but got excited, then scared.

178 Ace wrote, "If a botched robbery is hard to believe, so is a botched assassination -- Seth Rich was apparently still alive when he reached the hospital...".

I find it very easy to believe in a botched assassination. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand survived an assassination attempt just prior to the one that killed him. The team that got Reinhard Heydrich on Operation Anthropoid in WWII very nearly botched the job, and they had been highly trained for that specific mission. FDR survived an assassination attempt. So did Teddy Roosevelt. So did Ronald Reagan. The list goes on and on.

Human beings are at once both incredibly fragile and amazingly durable. Chance plays a huge role too--especially when handguns are the weapons employed since handguns are notoriously ineffective when compared to bombs, rifles, shotguns, or--for that matter--knives.

If Rich was assassinated for political reasons rather than shot by a street thug or junkie, the killing would have to be done by someone trusted and highly placed--meaning older and maybe a little soft and rusty. That Rich was shot in the back is telling on that score.

Anyway, if history is an indicator, bungled assassinations are more the norm than the exception.

But about a week+ ago, they both had[\i] to go to an anti-Trump rally - because of his stance on "climate change." In 90 degree weather, she paraded with the useful idiots, and now she has pneumonia.

She's drawing the very last precious moments of life and she decides to spend it at an anti-Trump rally?

201 I am totally being serious here, which I realize may be different from my usual sarcasm on the rare times I post:

Last night, for the first time since the election and January 20th, I lit a candle and prayed specifically for the protection of President Trump and the "good guys."

I prayed for the evil to be brought to light, all the players, no matter how shocking. It is a game to them. A tit for tat. Watch this closely...when President Trump has a good week they volley off with a "source" says blah blah. Fake news. Which gets idiots stirred up who only read or watch fake news and, therefore, have no curiosity for the other side aka truth.

This has happened before, courtesy of WaPo, and within minutes of bad news for the Cabal. It will happen again and again and again.

While I knew this would be a difficult job, to take back our country, I did not anticipate the NeverTrumpers like Balloon Head (friend of McCain and former CIA) along with the evil Dims and their effing Resist crap. It is bordering on sedition.

So, I pray for this country, and I pray for this President. xoxo

Obama was feared, at least by the GOP, to judge by their actions.

I seems like the FBI was investigating Trump, Trump's campaign, Trump's advisers, Trump's potential political appointees.

Obama had Trump, Trump, Trump, and Trump under surveillance so the FBI has plenty of leads to investigate.

Rumor has it that Scalia said something to Napolitano about the Supreme Court being under Obama's surveillance, but Scalia's dead now.

I don't think he regained consciousness and could not provide any clues in his own death, but an assassin really wouldn't have left that up to chance, would he have? If you've come to kill someone, you kill him -- you don't injure him badly and then leave it up to God and emergency medicine whether he survives or not."

=========

He may have given clues to his killers to the D.C. police, but what would he likely have told them other than a physical description of the perps? I can't imagine they said, "this is for stealing emails and giving them to Wikileaks!" bang bang

Remember, Wikileaks had the emails, but had not yet published them, at the time of the killing.

If it was a hit on Seth Rich, it must have come out of the counterintelligence division of the FBI. They undoubtedly have been investigating Assange for years and identifying and tracking his contacts, such as MacFadyen. No one else would have been speculating about Rich or any other DNC staffer leaking the emails, because they had not yet been published. Who else could have known about what Rich had done at that point, other than the US intelligence community?

And if Rich told the D.C. police something about his killers, I don't discount the idea that the DC police would keep something under wraps if the feds told them to.

Remember the shooting of the single black mother who drove into a White House barrier and took off, shot and killed by someone (US Capitol Police, DC Police, Secret Service?) after a chase? That was kept under wraps, and the media never pursued what happened, and no one was publicly disciplined much less charged, even though it happened in front of lots of dash cams and building security cams.

320 Simple answer - he was a paid Russian agent. Not every agent is the Black Widow. Sometimes you just got to pay a guy a couple of $k to stick a thumb drive in somewhere. Could be he was stupid enough not to know what he was doing. Wikileaks didn't know that. The family (and the police) know, but don't want it known he was a traitor. The FBI has the laptop, and it is part of their Russia investigation. Explains every fact in the case.

Who shot him? His Russian contact. maybe he mouthed off, asked for more money, made threats. Ivan shot him. What is he going to do if he survives, finger Ivan? And go to prison? Nope, he was shot to make a point, probably to others on the payroll - we own you. If he had survived he would have said it was a robbery gone wrong, and given a vague description, and kept his mouth shut, lest Ivan shut it for good.

Simple.

348 The premise for the MSM reporting on the Trump-Comey matter is that the FBI is not really a part of the Executive Branch, that it is a fourth branch of government not under the direction of the president.

What is the crime the FBI was investigating at the time against Flynn? It is not illegal to speak to the Russian ambassador, and it is not illegal to mislead Pence if that is what Flynn did.

By all accounts, Trump has not opposed at all the investigation of the supposed Russian hacking of the DNC or Podesta.

But the president does not need to suffer FBI agents going on fishing expeditions against members of his administration, where no crime can be pointed to, since the FBI is ultimately under his direction.

Here is the thing on Russia-Trump collusion: there is no evidence. FB Lefties are all like only the most bizarre and hyperpartisan can be defending Trump!

But you know who says there is no evidence of Russia-Trump collusion? Senator Dianne Feinstein, that's who.

The IC did not determine that there were Russian fingerprints on the DNC hack - because they never looked at the DNC server. Because the DNC wouldn't let them. Instead, they had a hired cybersecurity firm that said that. Hired by the DNC. And the "fingerprints?" Ninja super sophisticated can only be a state actor hackers left behind a word document with a Russian name in the document properties. Ooopsie!

And thus the world's hair is on fire.

before May 21, 2016. This is exactly the number of documents posted by
WikiLeaks" on July 22.

So he transferred the emails 6-7 weeks before he was killed. And probably blabbed about it to his GF and other Sanders supporters, believing he was a whistleblower, doing good and righting a wrong.

432 The explanation to Ace's points number 567 and 568 above are that this could be a murder, plain and simple, by one of the aggrieved parties.

Let's say John Podesta finds out his spirit cooking escapades are about to be the topic du jour.

Let's say John gets upset enough to whack someone.

John Podesta is not an assassin or a doctor, so he fails to kill his victim outright or mistakenly evaluates unconsciousness as death.

John Podesta is also not thinking clearly enough, or lacks the catburglary skills, to steal the laptop. Plus, he's already been told that the cat is out of the bag. He's not trying to cover up, he's really just straight out taking revenge.

So not a botched burglary.
Not a botched assassination.
Not a botched coverup.

Because it's none of those things. It's simple murder by someone pissed at the whistleblower, perhaps for very personal reasons.

445 Heard Wheeler on WMAL, both morning and evening, and suspect he's going public because he knows this is deep and dangerous. He's got lots of professional investigator friends here in D.C. where he has worked for years, and to hear him relate that those still in the force only reply with blank stares when he asks if they have even looked at Seth Rich's personal/professional relationships is chilling. (Blank stare is apparently professional trade craft for "We can't say but you know the answer.") Wheeler also said that his understanding of the contract with Rich's parents did not include a gag deal, only that he not represent himself as speaking for the family. Screw the fact that the FBI or D.C. homicide has secreted Rich's cell phone and lap tops away where no one can find them, all this story needs is a quick call from Trump to the NSA.

449 Just because this guy sent emails to wikileaks, doesn't mean that is why he was killed. It is suggestive, but not definitive.

Rod Wheeler was on WMAL today with Larry O'Connor who is, I believe, a lurking moron.

Wheeler was clear that he had a contract with the parents of Seth Rich. His position on not talking to the press is that he is not barred from speaking to the press, but from doing so on behalf of the family. He acknowledges that the parents released a statement that they do not believe that their son had contact with wikileaks. He suggests that perhaps they themselves have been threatened.

This would all be so much bullshit if Obama and that crowd were not HUGE fans of House of Cards.

Fact: The neighborhood had been hit by a rash of armed robberies before he was murdered.

Fact: The police said he showed injuries consistent with fighting back

Earlier in a thread I posted a link to an article where an armed robber shot a guy and took off with nothing.

Even a botched robbery is done from the front.

Muggers can and do operate in teams. Ask Henry Rollins, Joe Cole was killed when they were mugged by two. Two muggers give more targets (single individuals, couples) and can split if pursued.
Lots of ways to approach target, but splitting is not unheard of. Most people will tend to fixate on the one in front they spot, who may draw their attention or approach. Strong arm is behind.

And yes there were reports of groups of muggers doing strong arm robberies (why police were on foot patrol nearby). Neighborhood also had shotspotter (only in 1/3 of DC and neighborhoods with gunfire).

474 Having not the time to read 400+ comments, I would remind all that the DNC refused the FBI access to its servers as part of the bullshit "hacking" investigation. That there tells me there was no hack, it was an inside job.

Remember too that Roger Stone has contacts with Assange and has said that the DNC email trove was provided by Rich in person to a person, not emailed. This may be inconsistent with parts of the Fox story. Lastly, rumor had it that Seth was on the way to talking to the authorities about his discoveries which would have made murder more likely than "punishing" for something past.

I think he was murdered for the reason that he found stuff and was going to the feds with it.

Sure! At 4 in the morning! After a couple beers! Who doesn't do that?

476 I think Rod Wheeler is telling stories that he has heard. They are not based on anything he has seen.

Apparently Fox has an independent story from a different person that is congruent.

This number 44053 has that sheen of fake precision.

I say mostly meh.

478 I've thought he was the leaker since his death--wayy pre-RUSSIA of course.
I believe family spokesman, given unto them by DNC after death, is a big Dem. I think they've been ... influenced.
Shot in back 2x, was talking to his gf, almost at his house.
Podesta did make dire comment about leakers.
John Ashe choked by weight. Shawn Lucas..mean bathroom floor, ~50 others weird sloppy deaths. It's a Clinton thing for sure.

479 Oh, I heard FBI had laptop. So, you know... black hole. And that DC police chief is fully capable of cover up.

480 A botched robbery? Only if the robber wanted his wallet and credit cards. What if he wanted a thumb drive?

And the emails released to Wikileaks may not have been everything he could get his hands on. The murder may have prevented the release of more damaging documents - which would also answer why they did not have him arrested but chose a 'safer' option.

481 474,
" I would remind all that the DNC refused the FBI access to its servers as part of the bullshit "hacking" investigation"

They learned well from Watergate where they did let the FBI and the phone company look for bugs. They found none. A week later the DNC called the FBI and exclaimed they had found one. It was a huge, kluge, Radio Schlock parts, and didn't work. That was embarrassing to the DNC so this time no FBI gets to look.

483 There is a lot of back-and-forth over The Laptop. But almost everyone has multiple devices. Would the cops even know if the key one was missing? Did they recover all his phones, tablets, and drives?

It has always seemed plausible that the leaks came from inside. Foreign hackers would not have recognized these interior DNC emails as damaging. And Crowdstrike, the democrat outfit that had sole access to the DNC system and proclaimed its penetration a Russian hack-job, has quietly rescinded its report.

487 Being skeptical is always good IF you also research. The slack dismissal of Clinton body count -- if you haven't looked into it, is naive.

488 Wheeler, per other news outlets, is claiming that those words were him previewing Fox's story, not his own independent information.

Either:
A)Fox News completely made up a story and has been caught red handed
Or
B)Someone got to Wheeler

490 If this murder happened in July of 2016 could preventing further leaks by the same person been the motive?
Getting rid of him by firing would have left him to free to blab some more and give his motive for the leaks.
Funny nobody seems to mention this possibility.

491 Recently, a State's (Commonwealth) attorney in Kentucky ran afoul of the legal system when a legal aide she did not give a raise to pulled email and text messages off a server and gave them to the KY Attorney General's office. He did not have authority to access that data either. My point: the DNC was lax in its IT security, as were Podesta and Hillary herself. You would not have to be much of a hacker to gain access - it happens all the time.

493 RE: "If a botched robbery is hard to believe, so is a botched assassination -- Seth Rich was apparently still alive when he reached the hospital."
Answer: A little of both. Possible scenario:
1. He was ambushed outside his apartment by two men intent on: (1) intimidation; (2) getting his laptop and any backup media; and (3) finding out what he did (i.e. how much had he given them). He fought refused and fought back (he had bruises). They didn't intend to shoot him, but things went bad.

494 RE: "According to Fox News sources, federal law enforcement investigators [FBI] found 44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments sent between DNC leaders from January 2015 to May 2016 that Rich shared with WikiLeaks before he was gunned down on July 10, 2016."
How many of the 44,053 emails have been published by WikiLeaks? Seriously, that is not a difficult question. If the emails on Rich's laptop are a superset of the emails that WikiLeaks has, then he is a possible source of the leak. If not, just tell us. If so, then the "Russia-hacked-us" claim goes out the window -- completely.

Posted by: kevino at May 17, 2017 11:28 AM (noq2N)

495 Quote: "1. I don't understand the motive for the murder, if we're talking about revenge-for-the-leaks as the motive. The leaks were already leaked."

If memory serves me correctly, Wikileaks didn't publish those documents until a week after his death. Those ordering the killing may not have known he had already passed them along.

As to why they didn't take and destroy his laptop, keep in mind these people were techno-illiterate enough to let him steal from them in the first place. They might not have been clever enough to know police would be able to find those documents, perhaps buried deeply. He may have also stored the documents two places, with the second being a flash drive he carried with him. They may have stolen and destroyed the second, unaware of the first.

They may have also assumed that his murder would be written off as a clumsy robbery attempt. After all, D.C. does have a lot of murders. And in that case, the police would have no reason to look at his laptop.

Here, the answer to a conspiracy v. stupidity debate might be resolved by saying it could be both. It could be badly executed conspiracy.
