Ace of Spades Pet Thread

dogshappy-hour-20170418-107.jpg

Welcome to the almost world famous Ace of Spades Pet Thread. Grab a beverage, sit back and relax. Spend some time in the world of animals.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

I wish I could claim this is my dog. I can't.

Even baby Hippos require dental care. Knock it off with the Nevergiveup jokes.

Missing pet. Happy ending as it returns.

Super dog Protects home against bear.

Squirrel with a sense of humor? Or it has seen Death Wish one too many times.

Doggeh cake eating competition.

Meet The PetMorns

Our first entry this week is from ibguy. Meet Maddie. Cute puppy.

yuri.jpg

What an adorable puppy!!!! Mrs. Mis. Hum. said "NO!!" we can't get one.

This is Zuri, our Rhodesian Ridgeback. This photo was taken at about 7 weeks old. She's about doubled in size now after 10 weeks.

Thanks for doing the blog. Pet Thread is one of my favorite parts of AoS.

Groganimal.

Wow, quite the athletes. And the photographer isn't bad either.

So yeah, the photos are kinda in two parts, the setup and then the real action. This is what happens when you adopt two boisterous six-month-old pups and then hold a stick over their heads. They assaulted me in unison.

By the time they finished, there wasn't much left of that stick.

Both were rescue pups. The brown-and-white rascal was Worf, probably Catahoula and something else. In the first photo, you can see his three-tone mottled coat and that typical hound baying stance. He was fearless and for every day of his life, he woke me up with a vigorous face wash. Lemme tell ya, that's more effective than coffee.

The little black sweetie was Tasha, who preferred to wash my husband's feet, hands, knees, whatever she could reach, but she never presumed to lick his face. She fell in the spectrum somewhere between Lab and bull terrier, with killer jaws and raw hunting instincts. Not long after these photos were taken, she took to yanking full-grown raccoons off the chain-link fence at midnight, and never had any problem doing so.

They owned us for sixteen years. Both are gone now, and every time I suggest getting another dog, my husband tears up and I'm not far behind.

Cheers,

Hi,

Last, but not least this weekend are 2 cats owned by Lisa The Lurker. Here they are.

lisa1.jpg

Hi,
You said you needed some cat pictures and we certainly have those! I'm longtime lurker Lisa and lover of all things ACE.
Story:
This is Annabelle or as we like to call her -"Tiny Bubbles". She's as light as picking up 27 cotton balls & her beauty mark makes us swoon.
Eleven years ago she did us the honor of bringing her 3 kittens into our schnauzer laden yard & life has never been the same.....in that we are now crazy cat and dog lovers❤.

Lover of all things ACE? You haven't seen the break room have you?

lisa 2.jpg

Longtime Lurker Lisa again.....This is Flynn. You posted his kitten pictures. He's grown up. In the meantime we got Amazon Prime, joined a wine club & now he gets new outfits in 24 hours.

What a great bunch of pets!!! Thank you for submitting their photos and sharing with us. Once again, they all look neglected, mistreated and genuinely miserable. Good job.

Do you have a photo, an animal story, something you wish to share? You can reach the Pet Thread at petmorons at gmail dot com.

See you next week, God willing and the creeks don't rise.

5 Is the Maddie in the linked video the same Maddie as the picture? The coloring look very different between the two. Way more white patches in the video on both head and legs. Or is that just something that happened as she aged?

Anyway, the dog looks cute, but the dog/squeak toy combo would drive me crazy in under 30 minutes.

28 My cat is in training to be some sort of cat-soccer goalie, and is now hooked on the little pink foamy ball I gave her. But likes it best if I play wiht her.

Right now, my house is like that part in The Shining, when Danny is on his big wheel and suddenly, out of nowhere, a ball appears.

Suddenly, I'll have a little pink ball roll into my line of sight, and have no idea where the cat is. It's disconcerting and amusing at the same time.

49 Neighbors said the bear, which is tagged, makes frequent visits to the area, but doesn't normally get up to so much mischief.

"He makes a mess of our trash bin every night," resident Mike Tavakkoli, who said the bear briefly entered his garage Tuesday and raided a refrigerator there, told KABC-TV.

Unless Mike enjoys cleaning up messes, he could significantly reduce the stress in his life by a) closing the garage door, b) leaving the garbage bin inside the (closed) garage until the morning of garbage day.

59 At this point in our lives we didn't need a new pet, but as a favor to one of my BFFs we have a new African Grey parrot. We already have one that I've owned for 30 years.

BTW I do not recommend parrots as pets, but since we had the one, one more isn't a big deal.

My friend's cousin died two years ago and had named my friend's mom executor of her estate. The 88 year old mom couldn't decide what to do with the bird so was paying people to care for the bird and refusing to sell off the deceased's house where the bird lived.

This of course couldn't go on so a group of us engaged in a charade to convince the mom to finally change the situation. I got stuck with the bird, but at least she's very sweet and reliable, and has a big vocabulary which is always good for a laugh.

She and First Bird don't get along, but the fights only get physical when both want to be with me in the kitchen. first bird is territorial about the cooking area. I guess she's always enjoyed hanging out with me there, and that's fine except for the little poops and me constantly stepping on her.

Thank you for the compliment. We're very proud of them. Dutch and Ilya have left us, but Carmen and Aida are still with us.

Brace competition is showing two dogs simultaneously. They are judged on quality, similarity and uniformity of movement. We were very fortunate that in one litter we had two boys and two girls who were both matched pairs. Considering that Borzoi come out as any color or combination of colors, it's particularly rare.

To show one Borzoi well is hard enough but to show two in tandem to such effect is a tribute to Her Majesty's breeding and training. Two boys make a partnership. Two girls make a conspiracy.

Basically dogs bred in the south for multipurpose rural use: varmints, herding rough stock and home protection.

We have a 13 year old Texas Lacy, which was created mainly to herd hogs in the Hill Country, but are more popular now I think for tracking feral hogs on hunts. Ours is a spoiled city dog, but he's extremely intelligent.

I was there over the garbage collection day and I think half the residents had left garbage out overnight in non-bear proof cans or even just loose bags or boxes in some cases to be picked thru by raccoons and wandering dogs and be bear bait rather than get up that ONE day of the week to put their garbage out shortly before pickup. And then the lazy ass stay twats probably cried and called the DOW people mean when a bear inevitably became dangerous and had to be shot.

Yep, that's what they have in that area as well as south and west TX. Technically, javelina (peccaries) aren't wild boar but it's a common perception. Wild boar are non-native feral versions of our domestic hogs, but javelina are native to the new world and are relatives of hogs. Feral hogs are huge pests but javelina aren't, and they're smaller and kind of cute up close. I only worry about them a little if I'm on foot and a group comes by with babies. I just stay out of their way and no prob.

139 >>Probably too late, but does anyone have a good technique for removing ticks?

I grew up on a farm with lots of dogs, mostly Golden's which are tick magnets. We experimented with everything from alcohol to petroleum jelly to fire (do not try this at home).

The only thing that really works well is a good old fashion pair of tweezers. Make sure you get as close to the skin as possible so as not to break off the head.

Well, I suggest not letting him see the tool, for starters.

Then give him some peanut butter, or something else he can't just swallow in one gulp, or even better, have someone else feed him yummies while you're doing the deed.

This will distract him, plus give him happy associations with the process, especially if it's a treat reserved just for this occasion.

145 Oh, that squirrel! Love those little dudes. I was tired coming back from a six-mile walk after work with my rescue, Mixer. We were at about mile five of the walk on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail. I had him on a 16-foot retractable lead attached to a 3-foot belt loop as backup. He takes off down the trail jerking the leash handle out of my hand. I grab the loop before he rips my hikers off (Ex Officio thankfully), and see that he has a squirrel in his jaws and is shaking it like a limp dishrag. I was very startled and upset, yelling at him to 'leave it'. It was a fatality. When I reached down to move it from the trail, a gal on a bicycle rides by shrieking invective at my act of animal atrocity. To this day I have not gotten over that squirrel nor the cycling harpy who undoubtedly has a very mindless voting record.

Sorry for the non-immediate follow-up, I had errands to run.

I am not using any tick or flea preventative because underneath, Conor self-identifies as an albino (very pink skin), and when I tried Frontline several years back, he seemed to have a bad reaction to it, I'm also leery of insecticide products in general around animals, but maybe I haven't looked hard enough.

Do you have any recommendations?

I don't know how his parents managed the logistics, but I'm reasonably sure a couch was somehow involved.
