Out: Global Warming Until Antarctica Melts And Floods Us All
In: A Coming Little Ice Age That Will Last Decades

The #Science here is #Settled, whatever it might turn out to be.

Experts told Daily Star Online planet Earth is on course for a "Little Age Ice" within the next three years thanks to a cocktail of climate change and low solar activity.

Research shows a natural cooling cycle that occurs every 230 years began in 2014 and will send temperatures plummeting even further by 2019.

Scientists are also expecting a "huge reduction" in solar activity for 33 years between 2020 and 2053 that will cause thermometers to crash.

Both cycles suggest Earth is entering a global cooling cycle that could have devastating consequences for global economy, human life and society as we know it.

If predictions of the world-wide big freeze come true, the plot to 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow would not be far from reality during winter.

The Telegraph has the same story, but it's paywalled.

13 I recall this guy predicted this more than ten years ago

Astrophysicist Dr. HabibulloAbdussamatov,Head
of Space Research Laboratory at the Pulkovo Observatory of the Russian
Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia in new book:

"Since 1990, the Sun has been in the declining phase of the
quasi-bicentennial variation in total solar irradiance (TSI). The
decrease in the portion of TSI absorbed by the Earth since 1990 has
remained uncompensated by the Earth's long-wave radiation into space at
the previous high level because of the thermal inertia of the world's
oceans. As a result, the Earth has, and will continue to have, a
negative average annual energy balance and a long-term adverse thermal
condition.

"The quasi-centennial epoch of the new Little Ice Age has started at
the end 2015 after the maximum phase of solar cycle 24. The start of a
solar grand minimum is anticipated in solar cycle 27±1 in 2043±11
and the beginning of phase of deep cooling in the new Little Ice Age in
2060±11.

"The gradual weakening of the Gulf Stream leads to stronger cooling
in the zone of its action in western Europe and the eastern parts of the
United States and Canada. Quasi-bicentennial cyclic variations of TSI
together with successive very important influences of the causal
feedback effects are the main fundamental causes of corresponding
alternations in climate variation from warming to the Little Ice Age."

(quote from here)

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/611671/
ice-age-britain-freeze-climate-change-weather

Research from mathematics professor Valentina Zharkova shows that low solar activity could cause global temperatures to dip to their lowest levels for more than 350 years.

Within three years drastic reductions in heat-releases from the sun could drive substantial cooling in Europe, North America and Asia.

From 1650 to 1710, temperatures across much of Europe - including Britain - plunged when the sun entered a quiet phase known as the Maunder Minimum.

Zharkova believes a similarly extreme deep freeze is on the way - triggering new glaciers, blanket sea ice and frozen over rivers and lakes.

Sounds bad. We are all going to freeze!

But, then it is followed by this.

The Met Office has previously told Daily Star Online that a new mini-ice age is a "worst case scenario", adding that while temperatures are likely to dip, it will do little to offset man-made global warming.

George Feulner, of the Potsdam Institute on Climate Change Research, agrees with this view, adding: "The expected decrease in global temperature would be 0.1 degrees Celsius at most, compared to about 1.3 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times by the year 2030."

Can it do both? Will there be some kind of global warming ice age? Will we freeze and melt at the same time?

Maybe we should start to panic now, just in case.

Krakatoa was in 1883, I think. There was another big volcano in 1815, and 1816 was called "The Year Without a Summer" in the northeastern U.S. There were frosts recorded in June.

I don't know if there were any volcano eruptions in 1708 or 1709.
Posted by: rickl

Tambora in 1815 and a series of smaller eruptions every year there after that contributed in part to a cooling event.

Again, it best to keep these in discrete events; Pinatubo's cooling was lost in the record 18 months or so after it's eruption.

Amazingly, you hit the nail on the head perfectly -- in an essay I wrote several years ago, I discovered that the "cure" prescribed in the '70s to combat the looming "New Ice Age" are the EXACT same "cures prescribed for its opposite, "Global Warming":

https://pjmedia.com/zombie/2012/01/31/ the-coming-of-the-new-ice-age-end-of-the-global-warming-era/?singlepage=true

"I just finished reading a terrifying new book about climate change. I learned this:

Climate change is happening faster than we realize and it will have catastrophic consequences for mankind.

There's very little we can do to stop it at this late stage, but we might be able to save ourselves if we immediately take these necessary and drastic steps:

- Increase our reliance on alternative energy sources and stop using so much oil and other carbon-based fuels;

- Adopt energy-efficient practices in all aspects of our lives, however inconvenient;

- Impose punitive taxes on inefficient or polluting activities to discourage them;

- Funnel large sums of money from developed nations like the U.S. to Third World nations;

- In general embrace all environmental causes.

You of course recognize these as the solutions most often recommended to ameliorate the looming crisis of Global Warming. But there's a little glitch in my narrative. Because although the book I read was indeed about climate change, it wasn't about Global Warming at all; it was instead about "The Coming of the New Ice Age," and it isn't exactly "new" -- it was published in 1977.

The Solution Remains the Same

As many other pundits and analysts have pointed out, in the mid-to-late 1970s we endured a massive "climate change scare" that was the exact opposite of the one we're enduring now. Back then, the media and activists trumpeted the arrival of a new ice age, with the specter of ice sheets and glaciers covering half the northern hemisphere, and brutal winters in the remaining ice-free zones.

The fact that the media and popular culture and academia have veered from one panic-inducing disaster scenario to another one which completely contradicts the first one is funny enough in its own right. But reading The Weather Conspiracy: The Coming of the New Ice Age opened my eyes to an even more significant aspect of this serial crisis-mongering:

The "solutions" prescribed to solve both Global Warming and the looming Ice Age are exactly the same."

396 Here's what may happen in the near-term: The Climate Warming/Chaos die-hards will insist the AVERAGE global temp will continue to increase. They'll predict that in fifteen years Fargo will be under an ice sheet and people in New Orleans will be dying in 135 degree F high temps from April through October. Their Bottom Line: Humans must stop burning fossil fuels to save 35 percent of humans from freezing to death and the other 65 percent from sweating to death in only fifteen years!

After all, 97 percent of climate scientists are not going to simply pack up their precious models and reputations and meekly say ooopsie, my bad!

398 Damn, I just can't stop quoting my essay, because it just destroys the whole Climate Change movement.

Continuing from comment #386:

---

"The "solutions" prescribed to solve both Global Warming and the looming Ice Age are exactly the same.

In both cases, proponents of the theory-du-jour say that in order to stave off disaster, we must reverse the march of civilization, stop our profligate use of carbon-based fuels, cede power and money from the First World to the Third World, and wherever possible revert to a Luddite pre-industrial lifestyle.

I realized: The solution (commit civilizational suicide) always remains the same; all that differs are the wildly divergent purported "crises" proffered up to justify the imposition of the solution.

Seen from this angle, the entire Climate Change field should be more properly reframed thus:

In order to weaken and eventually destroy the existing industrialized nations, we must devise an ecological "crisis" so severe that only voluntary economic suicide can solve it; and if this first crisis doesn't materialize as planned, then devise another, and another, even if they flatly contradict our previous claims.

I had long suspected that this is the most accurate characterization of Climate Changeology; but reading The New Ice Age clinched it for me. The true purpose of climate change disaster-mongering is to permanently cripple the First World, and to elevate the Third World, in order to create a planet with no economic inequality. The goal remains constant; the supposed imminent catastrophes justifying it come and go as needed."

I think our epitaph would have to include something about how tragic it is that so few people understand how large the planet is and what that entails. For instance, so many of the Science Guys think we're running out of "room," but every piece of garbage created in America for the next 100 years could be trucked and stored in a landfill the size of one small NC county. We have no shortage of space, just a shortage of understanding simple concepts.

It would be a pretty good use for Durham, frankly.

The phrase "Climate Change" doesn't belong in the article at all. Its the SUN cooling down. And yeah, this is more of a problem than if the planet were warming which would be more helpful to human life.

Of course its also written in the "We're all DOOMED" mode as is obligatory.

447 I'm very late to this party. I wish scientists would be a bit more skeptical of their own positions. All of the scientists including skeptics. Saying we are on a 230 year cycle is just too specific and seems to me to be over reaching to make a prediction.

When it comes to the sun, or weather cycles, I think we should be agnostic.

Although, from a Scott Adams persuasion perspective, giving definite information will change more minds or at least confuse the issue so people become more uncertain. It's a good anchor-"In twenty years we will be in an ice age."

But it's hard for me to accept those claims and on the whole I prefer my scientists to be cautious. To me that gives them more credibility.

In my opinion our strongest arguments center around:
1. It's a physical fact that CO2 is a greenhouse gas
2. In certain circumstances it causes warming
3. The earth's system, however is complex
4. We don't know how the CO2 effects other climate influencing systems such as forest and plant coverage
5. Warming predictions depend on postulated but unproven forcing systems other than CO2
6. The computer models used by scientists to predict warming deviate wildly from each other because they use different forcing inputs
7. None of them match the actual data
8. Crippling our economy when so little is known is a mistake

In a nutshell, C02 may cause warming, but so far it hasn't been anything near predictions. Seems like a bad idea to put people out of work when so much is uncertain.

Of course, that kind of argument would never work on the Progressive Tribe Member, but there are lots of low info people that buy into global warming (that's their theory so that's what I call it), and a reasonable approach I think sticks with them. Also, sometimes there is an audience an arguing with a Tribe Member is never a good use of time, unless you can influence the audience.

No one but willow will ever see this. That's probably for the best. If someone does see it and you want to respond you can: david prince at the g of the male. That's all one word and lower case.

448 #447 perhaps if you are so knowledgeable you might explain to us the difference in "solar activity" which has little to do with warming the Earth, and solar irradiance which is the amount of warmth reaching the Earth
And of course the Sun has been getting dimmer and less powerful since 1960
Weird isnt it that our temps have gone up when the Sun had gotten weaker ??????
