As such, there is really no difference between the male and female sex, the roles they take, the interests they have, or the power they possess. What we often push aside, however, are the biological differences between men and women. And according to recent scientific findings, these differences are ingrained into the very genetic structure of the male and female – and are extremely prolific. ![]() It should be impossible to be this stupid. I suspect for most of human existence, idiots who said moronic things like this tried to hand feed bears or cuddle with large reptiles, thus eliminating themselves from the the system. There’s no other way to read this than Nick Gillespie believes some minor alterations to the French tax code will ameliorate this. Now, does Nick Gillespie really think altering tax policy will magically transform low-IQ, inbred Muslims from the Maghreb into patriotic French republicans who work at Parisian software shops? It’s tempting to say it is just another pose, but the evidence is piling up in favor of the argument that Nick Gillespie is a stupid person. Anyone who truly believes altering tax policy will reverse a thousand generations of evolution is an idiot. Speaking of Goth Fonzie. Here he interviews PJ O 'Rourke. What did Obama once quip, "If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon." Well Trayvon is like Obama in having an awesome college degree. But now Trayvon has "turned his life around" and gotten a degree in aeronautics from Florida Memorial University. I think being dead helped him a lot with his studies; Trayvon won the degree posthumously, because he loved to fly. I don't know about the flying part, but Trayvon sure loved to get high. Whether Trayvon could have earned the degree if he were alive was debatable. He was suspended from high school for getting into fights with others. As John Adams told it, the American Revolution didn’t start in Philadelphia, or at Lexington and Concord. Instead, the second president traced the nation’s birth to February 24, 1761, when James Otis, Jr., rose in Boston’s Massachusetts Town House to defend American liberty. That day, as five red-robed judges—and a rapt, 25-year-old Adams—listened, Otis delivered a five-hour oration against the Writs of Assistance, sweeping warrants that allowed British customs officials to search any place, anytime, for evidence of smuggling. The laws of unintended consequences, Anti-Vaccination activists no where to be found.
Conservatives were wrong when they said granting alternative lifestyle practitioners special rights would put the country on a slippery slope. It wasn’t a slope at all. America jumped off a cliff. Today sexual confusion isn’t concerned with whether a young adult should remain a virgin until marriage. It’s concerned with whether a young adult should remain a member of the sex into which they were born. No, I cannot be made to care. Oh-Oh. Stephen Hawking goes from 1,000 years to 100 years to colonize a new planet. Stephen Hawking is making apocalyptic predictions again. The respected theoretical physicist warns that humanity needs to become a multi-planetary species within the next century if we don’t want to go extinct. Last year, he prophesied that we had maybe 1,000 years left on Earth, and the inspiration for this newly-urgent timeline is unclear—except for the fact that Hawking’s new documentary about colonizing Mars is coming out soon. Taxes. More specifically gas taxes. Certain The solution is simple. The gasoline tax and other fuel taxes should be increased, and we may also need a way to tax vehicles that use alternative fuels. Highway users should once more shoulder the burden of paying for highway infrastructure. In the longer term, this problem should probably be addressed by indexing the tax rate to some measure of inflation. That way the costs paid by highway users will keep pace with inflation, and other sources of revenue will not have to be cannibalized to subsidize infrastructure spending that can and should and ought to be financed by those who use that infrastructure. A one time straight up vote for it? Fine. None of this indexing and tax increase every year where no one votes for it. We don't have a taxing problem, we have spending issues. I'm watching a TV series - "continuum". Still trying to decide if I like it or not. Main character is Strong Female Protagonist on one hand, but has a 2177 AD power suit on the other. The future is run by THE CORPORAAAATIONS!!! but on the other hand, the terrorists who want to take them down are murderous fanatics. (Mostly.) The show whiffed a great opportunity in second episode to return to alt-2177... in which the non-murderous fanatic has since changed the world for the "better". Sad news about Bob Owens. Especially so when suicide is involved.
Late wife took her own life. I always knew she would - she did too. Nothing anyone could do to stop it and we tried it all - meds, therapy, prayer, institutionalization, and begging. I thought she would not check out while the kids were little. I was wrong. To the outside world, probably like Owens, she had it all. But some demons cannot be tamed. I said to her once - I don't understand (her mental issues). She told me, "if you did, you'd be crazy too". Posted by: Tonypete at May 08, 2017 10:23 PM (tr2D7) 79

You know why politicians like this kind of tax? They like it because the voters have no idea how much they pay per year in gas tax. You know what you pay in income taxes and property taxes. Politicians love keeping the voters in the dark.
Posted by: nerdygirl at May 08, 2017 10:14 PM (+lVUW) ____ Many if not most people have no clue what they pay in income or property tax either. Property tax is part of their monthly payment. Oh-Oh. Stephen Hawking goes from 1,000 years to 100 years to colonize a new planet.
No big deal. He had confused the hour hand with the minute hand on his metric wristwatch. Happens all the time. That said, I think it's obvious that we have to go and colonize space. Even beyond the fact that we have to, we are driven to, anyway, because that's the sort of stuff Man does. And it would be nice if we could make sure that the sane people - those who understand the importance of private property - are the ones to get a jump on it. Otherwise, space will end up being colonized by the dregs and in 200 years it will look like a bunch of ex-Spanish and Portuguese colonies floating around ... which means that space will be littered with shitholes that no free man would want to live in. Suaado Salah listened. So there's news that a reboot of Roseanne is in the works.
What annoys me already is that I figure they'll come up with some typical TV-stoopid reason for the character of Dan (John Goodman) to be part of it. I've heard that Roseanne herself is now saying, "oh, he faked his death." One of the things I love to hate about TV. Everyone is constantly faking their death (because too many TV writers are too lazy to think of anything original and don't respect their audiences), they always make it so easy peasy, and of course as a result TV-addicted millenials think it's easy to do. California is revising an old and obsolete law from the 'red scare' of the war years. It will no longer be illegal to be a member of the Communist Party and hold a government job.
Lawmakers narrowly approved the bill to repeal part of a law enacted during the Red Scare of the 1940s and '50s when fear that communists were trying to infiltrate and overthrow the U.S. government was rampant. I've been away a bit. Has it been mentioned that it is VE Day? Google banner? I thought not.
-------- The beaten foe emerged. All over the broad Atlantic, wherever they had been working or lying hid, the U-boats surfaced, confessing the war's end. A few of them, prompted by determination or struck by guilt, scuttled or destroyed themselves, or ran for shelter, not knowing that there was none; but mostly they did what they had been told to do, mostly they hoisted their black surrender flags, and stayed where they were, and waited for orders. They rose, dripping and silent, in the Irish Sea, and at the mouth of the Clyde, and off the Lizard in the English Channel, at the top of the Minches where the tides raced; they rose near Iceland, where Compass Rose was sunk and off the north-west tip of Ireland, and close to the Faeroes, and on the Gibraltar run where the sunk ships lay so thick, and near St. Johns and Halifax and in the deep of the Atlantic, with three thousand fathoms of water beneath their keel. They surfaced in secret places, betraying themselves and their frustrated plans: they rose within sight of land, they rose far away in mortal waters, where on the map of the battle, the crosses that were the sunken ships were etched so many and so close that the ink ran together. They surfaced above their handiwork, in hatred or in fear, sometimes snarling their continued rage, sometimes accepting thankfully a truce they had never offered to other ships, other sailors. They rose, and lay wherever they were on the battlefield, waiting for the victors to claim their victory. - Nicolas Monsarrat ("V.E. Day," from The Cruel Sea) Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at May 08, 2017 11:00 PM (ZO497) 215

One of my problems with the left is that they tend to take arguments. And twist their meaning to suit their needs. So I will point out when the right does it as well.
Nick Gillespie's tweet could have been worded better. But his basic argument is sound. At its base much of the lefts immigration policy IS economic. Loose immigration policy was partially thought of as a way to mitigate the damage from low birth rates on the various socialistic ponzi schemes the left loves. Instead of having to rethink those policies. And be proven wrong. They need to expand the base of that pyramid. Its an argument Mark Steyn has put forth numerous times in the past. If you look at that tweet in a vacuum. Gillespie is basically correct. Could he have put forth more effort to get this point across? Obviously so. But to pretend he is the blithering ideological idiot the article tries to make him out to be. Only make the author look foolish Posted by: Mythx at May 08, 2017 11:09 PM (BnHi6) 251

Common Tater, I think a new version of M*A*S*H could work, if:
- Avoid the politics and preachiness. Just deal with the doctors, nurses and how they deal with an always-coming stream of broken bodies, and the military bureaucracy that comes with them. - Explore the Frank Burns character more. Make him less of a villain and more of a funny, empathetic character study. Let him grow a bit. - Add a bit more realism. Unlike in the series, they don't ever really get a break from problems and situations. Hawkeye isn't a non-stop joke machine and their gin-making setup is broken more often than it works. These are the kinds of changes I would make. I would NOT want to make a carbon copy of the original series.
Only make the author look foolish Posted by: Mythx No, the Left never ever positions the immigration issue on those economic terms. That's just false. Nick's comment melts as usual in the face of counter-factuals like Dearborn, MI. The B/W episodes of Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith, and Maverick were pretty good television. Better written episodes. In some ways, a lot of TV went to shit once color came in. Coincidence, I dunno.
Bonanza was one of the first, I've read. They used it to "show off", they always had brightly colored sets. Green shirts, red shirts, purple dresses, a yellow bandana. Posted by: Common Tater at May 08, 2017 11:29 PM (B28pn) 341
Diversions from Highway Spending. Congress and the states divert roughly 25 percent of the Highway Trust Fund spending to non-highway projects that are not federal priorities. The largest of these diversions is the Mass Transit Account, which spent some $8 billion in 2014 on buses, rail, streetcars, and other projects that should fall under the responsibility of municipal or state governments. Other programs include the Transportation Alternatives Program, which spent $820 million in 2014 on undertakings such as sidewalks, bike paths, scenic overlooks, vegetation management, and recreational trails.
http://www.heritage.org/transportation/report /highway- trust-fund-basics-primer-federal-surface- transportation-spending See how they do? The feds complain they have to transfer money into the Highway Trust Fund from other revenue sources because it doesn't have enough money. "We need more taxes to pay for the roads", they lie. Only make the author look foolish Posted by: Mythx No, the Left never ever positions the immigration issue on those economic terms. That's just false. Nick's comment melts as usual in the face of counter-factuals like Dearborn, MI. When the whole idea started fifty years ago it would have been a net bonus. Instead the west largely has allowed them to do as they please and rip us off through our welfare programs. Mostly to gain votes. Which is one of the reasons the rational has shifted over the years. In the 50's and 60's we were slowly changing the middle east to more resemble the west. Once the 70's rolled around and the radical muslims gained more power. The opposite started happening. They reverted their society back several hundred years. And then exported that mentality to the culturally weak west. I Posted by: Mythx at May 08, 2017 11:48 PM (BnHi6) 412

Although I've heard that one thing the original 1970s/80s TV series got wrong is, the turntables and LPs. As I understand it, by the 1970s every major station was using carts (8-track-like tapes) to play singles; the turntables supposedly went away (or were almost never used) after the early 1970s. Not a single of our NRO/GOPe betters has addressed this. -- OK, how about this: Looking at the numbers, if there are no borders, first world countries will be forced into an economic death spiral and become third world countries. There will be rampant disease (no vaccinations, no way to kill animals and insects that spread disease) and as well as mass starvation. Farms in first world nations will be overrun and we will no longer be able to feed anyone, if EVERYONE comes here. Is it more humane for the first world to help the third world using science and technology, or is it better for every nation to become a third world nation, and get rid of all science and progress, as well as succumb to horrible diseases that are curable and manageable now? I spent every overnight from May to August one year carting up the station's library when they changed cart machines from ITC to Tomcat. The absolute most boring time you could have. Two weeks after I was back at school, they found out that the recording cart machine was out of phase and every song, promo, jingle and commercial recorded for the previous 6 months had to be redone. Needless to say, the Chief Engineer was a new guy when I worked over the weekends, holidays and the next summer. Listening to some of the crap that the Music Director wanted in the library was bad enough the first time, the second time was hell. The rest is either syndication (mostly at night) or pre-recorded voice tracks from people who don't even live in the area. If you were to do a realistic sitcom (yeah, I know) about radio today, and you want any kind of cast at all, you'd have to set in a smaller town. That's where the real local radio is happening. weft cut-loop,
What I am saying simply as that the rational for much of the open borders bullshit was originally economic. To grow the bottom of the pyramid with productive citizens The story the left loves to tell NOW of immigrants helping society financially WAS true 40 years ago. And now only the illegals, and rank and file leftists really believe that story anymore Now due to cultural changes since the 70's it has massively backfired. The leftists currently in power will continue the policy now for other reasons. 1) Since immigrants voting heavily benefits the left. They will continue their open borders simply to retain power where ever they can 2) Publicly admitting it was a failure would destroy the lefts policies AND their ego's. You cannot continue to expand the lefts favorite social policies while shrinking the population each generation. Which is part of the premise of Mark Steyn's America Alone. As clearly most western countries populations would be shirking massively if not for immigration. Instead the left now argues(wrongly) that current immigrants are contributing financially. And will help stave off much of this problem. Posted by: Mythx at May 09, 2017 12:16 AM (BnHi6) 475

As I remember it, the main top 40 only type stations mostly used cartridges, for limted play lists. Less mainstream AM used a mix of carts and vinyl. The FM stations used pretty much all vinyl, with carts for ads and whatnot. This is late 70's to late 80's. Posted by: otho at May 09, 2017 12:03 AM (lmIoG) Albums were too fragile to be used like that. For the most part, you have DJ's grabbing records, taking them out of sleeves, and then cue the song up. During any of those steps the album can get damaged and fingerprints all over it. Some stations had vinyl for songs that were not played very often or when they played a whole album or side. It was easier for the station to cart the song up off of a fresh album so that there would be no pops, hisses or skips. After several playings, those start to develop. You would be surprised just how small of a playlist every format really has. They figured out a long time ago how to schedule the music to make a station with a library of 200 songs sound like they don't repeat the songs weekly. Agh. I can imagine the torture. Posted by: Captain Whitebread, Stable Boy of Hurlingbone Manor at May 09, 2017 12:07 AM (+HXL4) The station was a hybrid Top 40/Adult Contemporary that at night took on a more rock flavor in the 80's, and then about 92 when I took over as GM it became pretty much Top 40. It spent most of the 80's without any competition, and then once the 90's started, the other stations in the market started to get bought out by people that had their shit together somewhat. We were still the top station, but we had dropped to 4th in the ratings the day before I was named GM. CW, imagine listening to a Bread song to make sure the album cut was okay. Then recording the song onto the cart. Then playing the cart and adding the trip tones, and then playing the cart to make sure everything worked. Christian stations are like that. A couple dozen songs played repeatedly with maybe an "oldie" or possible new song once an hour or so. Also, I believe in the 90s a lot of Top 40 became gangsta rap. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Trump is so duuuumb, except when he's not. He played the intelligence community like a Stradivarius, just like how he played the media during the entire campaign.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/heqvcyz President Trump has defeated Democrats in the intelligence community (IC) who were leaking classified information to the press. Such leaks have been a problem for many presidents, but Trump is the first who took a proactive approach and set up a sting operation that identified the leakers. It's highly illegal to leak classified information. It's also illegal to PUBLISH this information, but Trump is too smart to try and prosecute reporters. I thought that Trump would fire members of the IC until the leaks stopped, but the president solved the problem with a much more imaginative and deadly approach: He fed the IC false information. When this information was published, Trump was able to identify individual leakers. How? Each group or individual who leaked was given a different version of events. This is CLASSIC spycraft. If nine individuals are told nine different stories, and then each of those stories is published, you know the identity of each person who talked to the press. It's called a "barium meal," after the medical test used to detect problems in the gastrointestinal tract. Soft tissues don't show up on X-rays. Barium salts are "radio-opaque," meaning that they show up in a radiograph or X-ray. --SNIP-- Why couldn't the IC tell us if Flynn had broken the law or not? Because everyone had been given a different story. General Flynn also knew he was being recorded. Therefore we can have no doubt that this was a sting operation coordinated between President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, General Flynn, the FBI, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). February 13, 2017 - The IC told the press that in late January, acting Attorney General Sally Q. Yates warned the White House that General Michael Flynn may be vulnerable to Russian blackmail, due to his conversations with Ambassador Kislyak. Yates based her opinion on "a report." Sally Q. Yates is the first of the disloyal Democrats to be passed false information. She never listened to the actual tapes of Flynn's conversations. February 16, 2017 - Donald Trump gave a press conference in which he admitted to the sting. He said that the leaks are real, but the news is fake. In other words, the ODNI fed the IC false information that the IC then blathered to the press. The ODNI did this in order to restore to President Trump complete control over the IC so that he can stop the "corrosive and damaging" leaks. Trump also said that the conversations with Australia and Mexico were "almost like a test." In reality they WERE a test. No transcripts of the conversations were ever produced, and both Australia and Mexico denied the IC's claims. The leakers have no access to actual information. They were set up. It's clear that the Trump sting operation involved PATRIOTIC members of the National Security Agency (NSA) and PATRIOTIC members of the ODNI. It's also clear that General Michael Flynn helped create the barium meal or canary trap. The CIA hates Flynn due to his criticism of their incompetence. After the major leaks began in September of 2016, General Flynn, Trump, Pence, James Comey, and James Clapper hatched a plan to identify the leakers by giving them false information. Flynn had to be fired so that the leakers and the press would continue their collusion. This means that Trump has even MORE evidence of their criminality, since they didn't immediately stop. The firing of Flynn made them overconfident and careless. "One down, more to go!" A fake trophy scalp Flynn was not fired against his will. For some reason people don't understand that. I'm very surprised. Do you not grasp that Flynn CREATED this operation? The position of National Security Adviser is almost ceremonial. When the leaks began in September of 2016, it was FLYNN who crafted this sting. He hasn't been sacrificed. Instead, he's working behind the scenes to root out corruption in the IC. --SNIP-- Posted by: The Donner Party at May 09, 2017 12:38 AM (qzf/J) 500

Meanwhile, in the real world... (copied from Wikipedia) ---------------------- On June 22, 2014, Atari announced a new corporate strategy that would include a focus on "new audiences", specifically "LGBT, social casinos, real-money gambling, and YouTube". ---------------------- Note that these days the company bearing the name "Atari" is essentially a rebranded Infogrames, which used to have some decent games. So today I was messing with a "bookshelf" stereo amp I salvaged from the dump. It's a Realistic SA-1500, circa 1976. Solid-state, of course. Claims 35 watts per channel RMS, and actually has some respect in Web reports I've read.
Took the cover off, and found two blown 7-amp pigtail fuses. Blew out the dust, and soldered in new fuses. Hooked up speakers, and ran a line from the audio out of this computer. Amp was drawing power, but would not play a lick. Oh, wait. Very, very faint sound from speakers if I connected to Phono 1 or Phono 2 input, zilch from any other. No hum, either. So I used clip leads, and connected my source cable to the terminal on the main amp board that feed the main amplifier. Bingo! Loud, clear music from the speakers. Both right and left power amps are alive and well. Something is gerfuckt between the preamps and the power amp. I have a schematic open from a manual in pdf. I'm thinking it might be a failure in that section of the power supply that feeds the preamps and tone control amps. Could explain the blown fuses, too. redc1c4, yup.
I got to listen to my bro-in-law's Sirius/XM on the way to and from Laughlin, on Easter weekend. Some of the tracks were very familiar, but they actually played some things I had *never* heard on LA radio, or hadn't heard in literally ages. I think if radio has a real future (outside of talk radio continuing to do well), Sirius/XM has got it by the balls. I just can't believe that millenials, with all their new technology, are going to embrace all the same old local radio bullshit that their parents and grandparents are apparently all too happy to accept. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 09, 2017 01:12 AM (qazQh) 531
497 Ashley, ah. Yeah, I imagine some of that stuff got kind of monotonous.
Also, I believe in the 90s a lot of Top 40 became gangsta rap. Ugh, ugh, ugh. (I think GR has gone away as a hit music format for the most part though, thankfully, because I don't hear much of it at all when I listen to top 40 radio while my teenaged niece and nephew in the car; nowadays, everyone sounds like they're auditioning for American Idol. Still annoying but at least they're not threatening/cussing out everything I believe in.) Posted by: qdpsteve at May 09, 2017 12:35 AM (qazQh) I worked at the station from 80-87, and then from 89-97. The gangsta rap started in about 90ish and kind of got obnoxious after a while. The record companies loved it because they could pay some guy about $50K to come in an record a song, release it, make big money on it, and if it looked like it was going to be a big seller, they paid them another $100K to make an album. Then in about 92, they discovered Grunge. And they did the same thing for those guys except that they gave them the $100K to record an album. All the record company wanted was a song that they could release as a single. Then, in the mid 90's something started to change. The charts became more about what was actually being played instead of where each station "charted" the song. Gangsta rap and grunge dropped and the mainstream acts started to rebound. The biggest joke in the radio and music industry was Michael Jackson's "Bad" album. It was radioactive to any one that played any song from it, but every song released always seemed to top every top 40 radio station's chart, even though no one played the songs. Even Madonna was radioactive by the early 90's, nobody was listening to her music except for in clubs, and she really wasn't selling very many records in the US, but the record companies were buying it to try to boost the sales charts. By the mid 90's all you ever saw in gas stations around the country were cassette tapes of Madonna and Michael Jackson on sale for $2.99 because those were the ones the record company bought and then sold to wholesalers for next to nothing. Back in the late 80s there was a mixed format station in San Diego called KGB. They played a lot of Pink Floyd during afternoon rush hour and neither I nor many others complained. They also played The Rodeo Song in the morning rush almost every day with the f-words bleeped.
Posted by: kbdabear at May 09, 2017 01:14 AM (AOrEZ) 535
Ashley, I can believe that. By "Bad," people were far more interested in MJ for his crazy whacked-out lifestyle, and all the latest rumors about him and his (frankly spooky by that time) face, than his music. Outside of maybe "I Just Can't Stop Loving You," I don't remember any track from that album getting a ton of airplay.
I also find myself wondering, who are these people that are still buying Madonna albums? I can believe she still sells a respectable amount of units, because there's a lot of aging Gen-Xers out there who still want to feel at least a little hip from time to time, but she's nowhere near the draw she was in the 1980s. The record companies definitely are still seriously corrupted, even if they're not openly bribing DJs to play tracks anymore. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 09, 2017 01:18 AM (qazQh) 536

redc1c4, oh man. At one time, LA was a radio mecca. KNAC, KROQ, KMET, KLOS, and even KRTH had nice big playlists with lots of great songs to choose from.
KLOS and the newcomer, "The Sound" (which I believe is a turnkey format for numerous stations across the country), IMHO still at least *try* to provide what rock stations were delivering in the 1970s and 1980s; a comparatively larger playlist, DJs with actual personalities, and a focus on something besides cramming as many commercials as they can into every hour. But it's obvious they're not the powerhouses they used to be (or ever were), and that their audiences are rapidly aging. Posted by: qdpsteve at May 09, 2017 01:25 AM (qazQh) 541

It's bullshit. Something is seriously wrong. But these stations' information can't be based on actual reality. It's based on the bullshit reality of some overpraised, untouchable jackass in either LA or NY who's just good at finding foggy untouchable excuses to keep playing everything that s/he WANTS to hear, every day on every station, forever. Fuck 'em.
Posted by: qdpsteve at May 09, 2017 12:54 AM (qazQh) The station owners hire a research company to come into the market to do a market survey of what people want in a radio station. Then the research is presented to the owners with a recommendation on what kind of format to go with based on the research. Program director is hired to implement the format, and usually they are from a different market with that has a station of that format. He/she/xe brings that station with him/her/xer, and then they all start sounding the same. Or, the station owner just gets a third party to provide the programming for them via satellite. But, all those stations are going after the 25-54 year old demo. That is the demo ad buyers want and crave. Posted by: Ashley Judd's Puffy Scamper, aka MrCaniac at May 09, 2017 01:26 AM (1JnAL) 543

Posted by: qdpsteve at May 09, 2017 01:28 AM (qazQh)>>> Radio is monkey see, monkey do. Guys who came into a market would bring ideas from their previous stations, and most would get implemented. At first, it was kind of cool, because you usually had people who had been at the station for a while, so the new things didn't completely take over the station, they were just a little spice. The problem became when there was no one left at a station with any institutional memory. Then all the things that made the station great get tossed out by the new guy. They would look at the playlist and see a regional singer/band and throw it right out because they didn't know the songs, so they weren't the right ones. The listeners though remembered, and each station started losing its individuality and its market appeal. But, other radio people would hear the station and since it connected all the dots it is supposed to, "it sounds great!". Fast forward to today, and what you have is a few people nationwide making the decision on what gets played on a format. A country station in Cleveland will sound like a country station in Dallas, even though the types of country music popular in each market are different. And with that, I'm out. The intermediate AM places would get memos on what the current hits were and were expected to give em a spin (but, when they felt like it). In FM, The DJ's played whatever the fuck they wanted to. To be on high rotation, it meant all the DJ's loved your record. Backward, I suppose, but, it did make for a golden era for indies. 509 Listeners can't possibly be demanding the same stuff over and over.
They can, and they do. I've been doing this for over thirty years, and while almost everyone says they want variety and lots of different songs, when I would give them that...the audience size goes down. Always. There's a sweet spot for each music radio format when it comes to the number of songs in the library. Too many is just as bad as too few. A skilled programmer takes the songs that are most desired by the listeners in that format in their region, and can make a playlist of a few hundred songs sound like a lot more. If a song plays in the same hour from one day to the next, or in the next daypart (for example, two mornings in a row), the programmer isn't doing his job well. As for stations like KRTH, their playlist is super-tight, no more than 300 at any one time. They also rotate a small amount of songs in and out every couple of weeks, so it's not the same 300 every time. I could go more "inside baseball" with this, but it's already waay past bedtime. I'm going to go wait for the melatonin to kick in. But hey, I do like the idea of people paying for what they use re the gasoline tax. Let's expand this thought much further. Public trans -- This one is easy too, as you raise the price of tickets to cover all costs. Public schools -- Add a special property tax if you have children of school age, otherwise that line item charge vanishes for the rest of the owners. For renters, they get hit with a special renter's property tax add-on. Easy peasy. For those with kids in private schools, they get a property tax exemption. Public hospitals -- Guess where I'm going on this one. See #1. Public defenders -- Hey, there's a tax for that (looks at users). Public parks -- Pay the turnstile, bitches. The police -- Call the cops, get a bill. Yeppers, I'm liking this line of reasoning. Let's go with it. Posted by: GnuBreed at May 09, 2017 03:09 AM (wTwJ2) 587

Traced the signal wires back from the power amp board, and they go to a tiny board, piggy-backed onto the preamp board. Nothing on it but a few resistors, one transistor, and a little green coil, marked "L24". No "L24" on the schematic I have. No tiny board either, leastwise not that tiny board.
Bridged a couple of contacts with my fingers, and loud music came out of the speakers. Coil has six terminals. Two are inputs, connected by shielded wire to the tone control board, and two are outputs, connected by shielded cable to the power amp board. The other two appears to be connected to the transistor and to ground, or maybe power. I think the coils is (was, since it seems to be open) a saturable reactor controlled by the transistor. Maybe it's a device to mute the amp when switching modes, or maybe a peak limiter? Not on the schematic. So I figured, "coil? likely low DC resistance, eh?" Soldered in a 22 ohm resistor to replace each leg of the coil, and bingo! I had a working amp. Listening to it right now. Volume, all three tone controls, and balance control work fine. Not even any scratchy noises when I move the controls. Enough volume to blow me out of the room. Whatever feature that little board provided, the amp doesn't need it, as evidenced by the schematic not having it. An easy fix, as major disassembly was not required. I saw Major Disassembly open for Foreigner at the Beehive in '99.

Hmmm. Bass sounds a little crappy. Must be those cheap-ass speakers.
I'm going to put this amp out in the shop, with some decent speakers on it, and run a line outside from this computer, so I can play mp3's off the vast collection in this hard drive, and thereby avoid listening to the radio. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 09, 2017 03:33 AM (0deF2) 592
I saw Joan Jett and the Kinks open for Foreigner at JFK stadium in Philly in 1982.
That was a nice stadium. Something like 100,000 seats. Foreigner sucked, BTW. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 09, 2017 03:35 AM (zc3Db) 593
Listening to "Spoonful" by Howlin' Wolf right now. sounding good.

Posted by: RickZ at May 09, 2017 03:48 AM (qzf/J) I don't remember a black singer. I thought that Loverboy had been in the line up. I may be confusing concerts, though. As to black singers from philly (of that time) I can only think of Teddy Prendergrass. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 09, 2017 03:52 AM (zc3Db) 601
re: Concerts and how you know you're old at 25.
I went to see Ian Hunter at the Pier in NYC in '81. He had a minor solo hit with his 'Central Park and West' at the time. Hunter also played some Hoople songs along with some of his solo stuff after he left Hoople/they broke up. There was a 16 to 18-year-old girl, with her boyfriend, next to me. When Hunter broke into some of his solo stuff, which I really like, I was on my chair, singing right along with him. The girl turned to her boyfriend and I heard her say, 'He knows all the words!' I just looked it up. No Madonna. Some site says that Rick James was on (though I have no recollection of him). Your memory is better than mine. Huey Lewis, Loverboy, Joan Jett, The Kinks, and Foreigner. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 09, 2017 03:56 AM (zc3Db) 603
POP, Pendergrass, that's the one. Loverboy may have been in that all-day concert line-up, too, though I can't remember. Funny, that. But the Kinks were damn good. And Joan Jet brought down the stadium with her 'I Love Rock 'n' Roll'. Very few groups/people have a rock anthem in their repertoire.

Madonna was in the line-up. She was on very early as she was just starting out. Maybe she was a late addition/filler.

Yes, Pendergrass was there, too. I remember thinking at the time, one of these acts is not like the others.

Never mind my Rick James mention. I think that was another concert they were citing. Teddy Pendergrass was a big Philly guy. He used to drive around the neighborhood in a nice Ferrari 308. Gorgeous car. He eventually crashed it and was paralyzed, IIRC. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 09, 2017 04:03 AM (zc3Db) 607

Posted by: RickZ at May 09, 2017 03:59 AM (qzf/J) I probably missed the very beginning of the concert. That was a looong day. It was one of the last big concerts I ever went to. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at May 09, 2017 04:05 AM (zc3Db) 608
POP, I looked up when Pendergrass was paralyzed (3/18/82). He may have done that concert in a wheelchair, if my memory is not totally faulty. I think the concert was in the spring, but after March 18th.

Awwwwww. Kellogg's announced yesterday that they were laying off over 200 workers in MN, after an announcement last week that they were shedding 250+ jobs in NY state.
Maybe whipping out your dicks and slapping Breitbart readers in the face with them wasn't such a good idea after all, eh Kellogg? I certainly have made sure not to purchase a single one of your many brands after your dickheaded move. And I lurved Cheezits and Keebler club crackers. I've found decent substitutes, while I'm guessing Kellogg hasn't found decent replacement consumers for me. Oh, and fuck McDonalds and Target Corp. in their respective squeakholes. I wold consider an increase in the gas tax when 100% of the money collected goes to road construction and maintenance, as it was originally intended. Instead it has become a general slush fund for free spending politicians.
Until then they can kiss my ass. Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at May 09, 2017 04:40 AM (mpXpK) 616

Late to the party with regards to gas tax increases.
My general feeling about this tax like all taxes is unless you can demonstrate a real need other than saying you need more money because reasons, I'm against it. NJ hiked it's gas tax and I don't see any more construction, better roads or anything of that sort. In fact the roads, especially the county roads are a scandal. Speaking of gas taxes, we here in Alaska pay some of the highest prices for gasoline, and out the "bush", they pay jaw-dropping prices of over $5 a gallon and more(!).
But, wanted mention a rather asinine measure that was recently passed in Anchorage regarding a $50.00 "fee" (read, tax) on, wait for it, STUDDED TIRES. In Alaska. Already tires are a rather large expense for any family whether they are summer or winter tires, and to add another $200.00 to the cost of safe driving is maddening.
