A teacher says that positive reinforcement doesn't work. Okay. Why pay teachers?
Compulsory, unpaid labor is slavery. Schools give to many students no reason to do what schools require. What we in the US call "the public school system" (i.e., the policy which compels attendance at school and restricts parents' options to facilities operated by dues-paying members of the NEA/AFT/AFSCME cartel) has become an employment program for dues-paying members of the cartel. If this is not so, why cannot any student take an exit exam at any age? Posted by: Malcolm Kirkpatrick at May 06, 2017 01:13 PM (IbUUZ) 14

They are the armed wing of the party ( if not actual weapons they use intimidation, lawsuits and thuggery) and they are racist to the core against anything "Western" or 'White". Posted by: Hairyback Guy at May 06, 2017 01:18 PM (5VlCp) 20
I'm of two minds on the kid getting held back from recess. On the one hand, if he was clearly apprised of the rules and broke them, there would need to be some form of consequence. However, I think recess is something necessary for kids at school that shouldn't be used as leverage. I also think a lot of schools have too many idiotic rules that are teaching kids to be good little sheep and go along with whatever authority figures tell them. I don't think that's good either.
Posted by: Insomniac, Lord Hurlingbone, Earl of Melancholy at May 06, 2017 01:19 PM (0mRoj) 21
O.K., he's talking about kids. And it is interesting in that context. But how might this apply to North Korea or Iran? For example.
NoKo? Ignore them. It's a mafia outfit without any juice. Alternatively, just admit that china is going to want a large buffer between SoKo and their border. SO, ultimately it's going to be a colony of China in the long run. The bargain will have to pivot on how much of NoKo is going to be a DMZ commie-less zone for SoKo to absorb. Iran. Well, if the GOPe can't see fit to get that $150 billion back and reinstitute sanctions, I don't know what the fuck we're doing here. The GOP is a less than senseless thing. 20. The Earl of Melancholy is right, of course. I still maintain that many societal ills can be traced to the decision to forbid any and all expressions of the natural and healthy human instinct to brawl and scrap, to cite but one instance. Kids need that - we all do.

Of course the article doesn't really mean to say "positive reinforcement doesn't work."
Of course it works! It ALWAYS works. The question is, what are you reinforcing, and who controls the flow of reinforcement? As a practical matter, no, you can't use ONLY positive reinforcement with students in schools, because you DON'T control so much of the process that flows in their lives. What tiny portion you do control, as a school system, you better have some punishment as a backup because frankly the reinforcements students get from outside your system are powerful and pervasive. There are two main problems with the teacher article.
One, can we please, for the love of God and all that is Holy, end the miserable tradition that *every* POS article in the world has to begin with a giant picture of an ugly person that barrels the **** out of the camera while the C64 on the other end slowly loads the article? I want to read the idiot article, not have some idiot staring at me. I wish there was a *really easy* way to turn images off and on. Secondly, as to content, there's a bunch of words but essentially nothing but some dude griping about something he doesn't like with nothing more than a handful of anecdotes. I mean, the title is wrong for one thing, because he's basically arguing against spoiling kids. That's fine, but positive reinforcement doesn't magically equal spoiling. I mean, he contradicts his title a couple paragraphs in, because he's really just arguing for balance and for teaching what life is really like. He's just doing it poorly. Now, as is often the case, he may not have chosen the title himself. But even given that, the article is basically just whipsawing around about how unhappy he is that he thinks parents are too lenient with their children, a perennial teacher complaint. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at May 06, 2017 01:28 PM (wB8Tg) 27
24. Oh, yeah, absolutely. The micro-management of children is appalling, and insult and affront to nature and human dignity. Of course the kids stare into space and get rowdy and fidgety - in many cases, they're stuck doing things no intelligent person would want to do, given the choice. A

Posted by: Insomniac, Lord Hurlingbone, Earl of Melancholy at May 06, 2017 01:19 PM (0mRoj) It's terrible, and it's no accident. The early Ctrl-left and communitarians got together more than a century ago and decided (and it's not even a secret) that conforming behavior was the most important part of schooling (though this took an awfully long time to be the norm), which is why high school tests from the late 19th century make modern test-takers look like idiots. Between those agendas and the fact that a lot of adults feel like they missed out on their childhood (not unconnected), we've really retarded development a lot over the last century. OK. This is driving me nuts.
Years ago I know I saw a video about replacing the magnet in a fridge seal-- note, not replacing the entire damn thing, trying to fit a new seal and all the attendant hassle that provides, but taking a utility knife, cutting the existing (but still fine) seal across at the top, pulling out the flexible bar magnet inside it and feeding in a new one. This video took a minute or two, instead of the long hassle of replacing the entire seal. My freezer isn't sticking closed too well and I'd like to replace just the weak magnet. The seal is fine, but I can't find any reference to doing just the magnet any more. This is a thing, isn't it? Posted by: Mr. Peebles at May 06, 2017 01:42 PM (oVJmc) 41

I'm cracking up from the comments after the article. As I recall, silent sustained reading is 15 minutes maximum with that age group. Its purpose is partially to help kids learn to focus on an activity for longer periods of time.
One of the commenters on the article dropped out of teacher education program; she thinks kids who need silence to concentrate should get their own reading room - but in some way that doesn't ostracize them from normal kids. I'm guessing her family is the one I sit near during concerts and movies who can't shut up for 30 minutes at a stretch. A music teacher is comparing managing 70-80 kids who chose band to managing classes that all students must take. Some psychologists are opining how very wrong recess-taking is but aren't giving one damned example of how to teach a kid that there's a time for work and a time for socializing. On the flip side, I agree with Insomniac Lord Hurlingbone that recess is necessary. Unless, of course, the other little readers were planning to smash his mouth in for interrupting their chance to read Captain Underpants. Then it's good that he's held back until they forgive or forget. As for idiotic school rules, I like to tell teenagers that rules keep growing every time a knucklehead's parents decide to hire a lawyer. I'm the last in my family to enjoy open campus in high school because too many teenagers were irresponsible during their lunch hour. Some of my relatives are retired teachers, and they are stunned by the stories told by those still teaching. Rules about dress code, cellphones, vaping - they're all-inclusive because unless it's spelled out in the handbook, the parents (and grandparents) come in screaming about lawyers. Our school district has a new policy (common in other districts, I guess) that any parent who wants to chaperone their kid's class somewhere has to submit a drivers license for a background check. That's not even counting the weirdness caused by mainstreaming all children with impairments. My older nephews couldn't believe their younger brother's stories about classmates screaming obscenities and throwing fits in class; they're emotionally-impaired, so there's a whole lot of rules about dealing with their behaviors before a regular consequence comes into play. To be fair, give France some credit. They went with a more centrist option than the moronic Democratic party did here.
All the Democrats had to do was nominate someone halfway sane with some reasonable ideas that could appeal to both sides of the aisle. They went with Hillary Clinton. Apparantly France learned from the US' mistakes. Posted by: Tickled Pink at May 06, 2017 02:48 PM (smD62) 109

That sidebar of Hanson brought back some fun memories. The tween girl next-door neighbors used to ask if they could take my pre-schooler daughter out to play and they would sit on the front porch and play jump rope or draw with chalk on the sidewalk and braid her hair and whatnot. When MBop would play on the boombox radio they would all scream like Beatles girls.
The Hansons are pretty talented (the acoustic version of MBop they put out in 2012 or so is quite pleasant) and they seem like they grew up into happy, normal, attractive people. Good for them. Posted by: Gem at May 06, 2017 05:14 PM (uaHyk) 153
