Cord-Cutting Increases 500% in Cable's Worst Month Ever

Television is a vast wasteland, but becoming less vast by the moment.

Pay-TV providers lost an estimated 762,000 pay-TV subscribers over the first three months of this year--five times more than they lost during the same period last year. To make matters worse, Q1 has historically been a strong season for pay TV.

"For the better part of 15 years, pundits have predicted that cord-cutting was the future," an apocalyptic Craig Moffett wrote. "Well, the future has arrived."

Old and Busted: First, kill all the lawyers.

New Hotness: First, cut all the cable cords and bankrupt them all. Then, see to the lawyers.

31 The cable cutting will continue until consumers are given what they want - in terms of content and selection. Up until now, the large media providers (Disney, etc.) have been deaf to the cries of consumers who want true choice - a la carte. They fear they will lose big $$ on some of their channels (see ESPN for one). Yet they aren't fearful enough yet that the consumer is cutting the cable as a big middle finger to the whole industry.

Adapt, or die.

It is something I observed when I learned of the Gramscian March Through the Institutions. Whenever the Left takes over an institution and uses that institution's influence to promote Leftism, it kills the institution. My theory is that the institution exists to actually serve a particular purpose. By directing it away from its purpose the Left destroys the very influence they were looking to co-opt. Sort of like what happened to mainline Protestant churches - people went to those places for spiritual fulfillment. As soon as they became socio-political pressure groups people went elsewhere in search of the spiritual fulfillment they needed.

It is the merde-Midas touch.

I cut the TV a few years ago. Come to find out that Verizon prices internet-only differently on its own than as part of the package I had (I originally had TV, Internet, and Phone). It was like $100/mo for the package, but with increased internet speed by itself (went from 25 to 150 mobs) I'm now at $90/mo.

But all of that is going to Verizon, not MSNBC. Besides, Verizon was big in fighting that stupid Net Neutrality stuff a couple of years ago, so I'm OK with it.

But yeah, the pricing model is whacked out...

Amazon allows you a comic book of PG rated options. Kodi permits you a 50 volume gamut of PG to XXX rated options. Yes, there are ways to get to sporting events that would upset ESPN. Ways to get to movies that would upset Hollywood.

But your automobile could also get you involved in a high-speed alcohol infused chase with police. That doesn't mean you shouldn't own an automobile.

92 The other funny part about cable is that it has become just like Ma Bell of old ... back when you didn't own your telephone but were only renting it from AT+T. And then you had to pay extra to get touch-tone!

With cable companies that shit has all come back. You have to rent their boxes at highway robbery prices. The big difference is that Ma Bell used to have great service and had a very robust network. Cable companies are the worst. Their service sucks and they can't even deliver their product in any manner that would be acceptable in an actual free market. Comcast actually forces full resets of its boxes EVERY FRIGGIN NIGHT! Yes, it actually turns the box off and on every single night. ANd the box freezes up all the time, too ... for which you get this awesome error screen that recommends you unplug the box and plug it back in!! It's almost funny.

Yeah, between shopping channels and paying for the subscription, getting ads always annoys me on cable.

It was hilarious, we were a Nielsen household for a while. I watch almost nothing straight on cable, its almost all "on demand." We don't have a DVR, and the Nielsen guys called us wondering how I was fast forwarding so often? because On Demand I can skip past ads, buddy.

Sadly not long after that, newer episodes on there started locking out fast forward on some channels. You will watch our ads, you bastard!

I had been a long time DirecTV customer but that was getting more and more expensive - another $120+ expense with no premium movie channels.Comcast pushed their triple play X1 package which would make my comcast bill about $30 more per month. Dropped DirecTV like a dress on prom night. And I get all the movie channels.

-- The predictable faux-hysteria breaks out over the obvious hoax, with people carrying the "No Hate on Campus!" signs, etc.

-- However, most students know it's fake and a bunch of ginned-up hysteria done for political reasons.

-- Some snarky teenage boy, mocking the hysteria, made an Instagram account about the hoax and posted "funny" pictures with "mock" racist scenes, involving black dolls.

-- Some other snarky teenage boys then merely looked at his funny satirical Instagram account, and laughed.

-- Those boys who merely looked at his Instagram account were "reported" to the authorities by some snitch SJW student, and were EXPELLED for the (unproven, untried) crime of looking at a Web page.

-- Upon being allowed back to school after weeks, they were then paraded (by the adminstration) in front of the other students for the purpose of being humiliated and having their self-esteem crushed.

Butler University said it is reviewing its course description practices after it received backlash for a fall 2017 course offering that focused on the election of President Donald Trump.

The class, a one-time special topics course scheduled, is called "Trumpism & U.S. Democracy." Its course description received attention after it characterized the president as “perpetuating sexism, white supremacy, xenophobia, nationalism, nativism, and imperialism," the Washington Times reported. That description has since been removed.

Only thing I can say is that I have an antenna in my attic, pointed in one direction and it works great. It all depends on your distance from broadcast sources. Amazon products will tell you their approximate range.

I would suggest, first step, download 'Antenna TV Helper' a free utility for smartphones. It will give you all the information you need to get started. Direction, distance from broadcast towers, etc.

170 Where they are getting kicked in then nads is "cable tv" revenue. They still are going to be the provider of choice for bandwidth in most situations. If you go to an OTT provider for video you will pay them. Sling TV is their own entity I think but DirecTV Now is an ATT product just like DirecTV.

You get more ala carte offerings on your Roku or AppleTV and of course there is Amazon and Netflix you are probably already paying for.

What is going to die is the really niche channels who survived from bundling.

I thought my wife would have issues with cable cutting but she loves it. It's like the ultimate VCR/DVR/On Demand, whatever.

I'm 'backed up' with a cheap OTA antenna for 'real time' stuff. But even that gets routed to a cheap $50 PVR with a cheap $30 super fast flash drive for storage. So she stores stuff on that and plays back, cutting the commercials as they appear.

Savings? Easily a grand a year. Even with Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix.

Well, the article I was commenting on was this one:

http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/ 4-Albany-High-students-suspended-for-following-11122762.php

(remove the space)

..but the backstory goes back for months, to the beginning of the hoax.

Quote from the article:

"Beck said student anger at the school, whose student body is less than 5 percent black, culminated March 30 with what the lawsuit says was an “atonement” exercise orchestrated by school administrators when the suspended students returned. Up to 15 involved students, including Beck’s four plaintiffs, were “lined up in full view” of the student body to be screamed at, Beck said.

The suit charges school officials did not provide adequate security for the disciplined students — saying two were struck in the head on their way out -- and only stopped the exercise after a parent of one of the students complained."

I'm sure this has been discussed already but I want to see the drill down on those numbers.

Because if you're replacing Comcast or Spectrum with Sling TV or DirecTv Now or Playstation Vue, all you're doing is changing the method by which the content is delivered. You're still getting pay TV.

Hell, that's true if you have Hulu or HBO Now or the like. It's just a different delivery system.

We replaced them with Ooma + PureTalk USA cell phones. We opted for no cable. We kept our Netflix two DVD plan for $4. We already had Amazon prime so we can get more than enough entertainment for no additional cost.

Our monthly outlays went to $153 from $384 with one time equipment & switching costs of $275--so we paid for the switch in less than two months. We have adapted quite nicely to watching zero TV apart from movies through our minimum Netflix plan. Much as I hate Bozos, I am not quite ready to cut the Amazon cord, but it has to be considered from a morality standpoint eventually.

One topic addressed was the current inability of Comcast, Time-Warner, etc to justify higher advertising rates to their advertisers when the latest figures indicate a 10% loss of the customer base to 'cable-cutting.' I suggested Comcast strongly reconsider its failed 'forced bundle' model and embrace 'a la carte' service, since that's where the market is headed. His response suggested this may have been his first exposure to the idea of 'a la carte' - that, or he's real good at playing dumb. Either way, Comcast will eventually be forced to respond to market pressure. As of Tuesday morning, I'll be on my way to the UPS store with the set-top box, the remote, and my bill so UPS can pack and ship the equipment back to Comcast - at Comcast's expense.

The first direct benefit to me as a result of my disconnect is a reduction in my monthly bill from ~$140.xx to the new figure of $55.88 (tax included) for 75Mbps internet service ($10 of which is the modem fee). Once credits are factored in, I may be bill-free for the next 2 to 3 months burning thru the credits before I have to write another check to Comcast. Next step is to buy either the powered indoor antenna from Kim Komando's site or get one of the others that are available. There's no rush to do it, since I can watch stuff on YouTube and haven't seen much to draw my attention to Hulu, Roku, Netflix, etc. I don't 'movie' anymore, and I was never big into 'sports,' and I can get news 'n weather online, so I don't need the local 'newsies' for that. Like the legendary Al Bundy said once upon a time in 'MwC': "I feel good ... yeah, I feel good."
