Sunday Overnight Open Thread (5/7/17) Work Week Eve ONT

true words.jpg

Yes, there are ONTs to be written

Let's roll.....................

Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Wherever I am in the world, I never get Sunday night blues. I suppose it's because I've never worked at any one thing long enough to start hating it. Hayley Mills

Consider yourself blessed.

Quote II

If God hadn't rested on Sunday, He would have had time to finish the world. Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Quote III

Sunday evenings often feel like the weekend is over before it's even begun. Catherine McCormack

Isn't that the truth!

Quote IV

Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do, when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly. Thomas H. Huxley
h/t Mike Hammer

Quote V

“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer.”Benjamin Franklin

Never afraid to roll up their sleeves to make a buck. Organized crime "lights up" big profits. Millions to be made in bootleg cigarettes.

A bust of a major organized crime ring that made millions smuggling cigarettes and committing bank fraud in Virginia has resulted in 43 indictments and more than 740 charges, Fairfax County police announced Friday.

An extensive two-year investigation uncovered a sprawling operation with more than 150 suspects engaged in transporting cigarettes from the Richmond area to New York City, writing bad checks, money laundering, and committing shootings and other violent crimes in the Richmond area, officials said.

“Illegally trafficked cigarettes now have a higher profit margin than cocaine, heroin, marijuana or guns,” a Virginia State Police official was quoted as saying by the state’s Crime Commission.

Casino fails. No big deal, We'll just grow pot.

A small Indian tribe in a remote stretch of San Diego County has traded in its failed dream of casino riches for what could be the next big payout — marijuana cultivation.

The Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel — which shuttered its 35,000-square-foot gaming hall in February 2014, buried under $50 million in debt — has transformed the vacant space into a high-tech medical marijuana operation, and is leasing part of the property to growers who cultivate and distribute the drug to legal dispensaries throughout the state.

People who enjoy The Great Outdoors know of the dangers of invasive species. Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources has a new approach.

Baby zebra mussels called veligers can be present in water, the DNR’s K-9 unit coordinator, Jason Beckmann, told Minnesota Public Radio. “They can be up inside of motors, in bilges, live wells, things like that, that an inspector might not be able to see. And a dog can smell that.”

Invasive species are a problem in waterways across the country. Eurasian milfoil, carp, and zebra mussels outcompete and infest lakes, rivers, and streams. They often spread with human aid, and cleaning hulls and motors is the most effective means to prevent transporting them.

At approximately $6,500 per dog, they better know how to fillet a walleye and pan fry it.

Why does the USA have the fattest poor people of the world? "The rise of obesity in the U.S. tracks closely with the expansion of America's primary food assistance program."

Recent reports show that the United States is one of the most obese nations in the world—the only G-8 nation to crack the top 20 of the most overweight countries in the world.

For children and low-income people the problem is particularly acute. A 2015 report commission by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that the U.S. “has the fattest kids by a wide margin and is tops in poor health for teenagers

115 I went to the Original Fort Worth gun show at the Amon Carter center yesterday. I actually found it to be a bit disappointing.

First off, you have to pay 10 bucks to park and now 10 bucks to get in, so you're out a 20 spot before you get in the door.

I know it's a gun show, but still, with one exception, the prices are/were all the same as they were before the election. The guns I had bought were selling for the exact same price OR MORE than what I bought them for during 2016.

Finally, for some reason there seemed to be a lot more booths of stuff that generally you didn't see a whole lot at a gun show. A table here and there before maybe. Candles, outdoor lights, jewelry, lotions, scents, and a few other things I forget now. Just a way higher proportion of those tables than in the past it seemed like.

That might be my last gun show for a while.

Today marked the commencement of the first mowing of the season for the finely-manicured lawns scruffy cow pasture at stately Peon Manor. Got the ditches mowed, which is what fronts on the road, and is most seen.

118 Nice day so went to the river place. We were just there to pick up bolt cutters as my husband lost the key to the lock on the cockatoo's cage. Hadn't been there long when the sheriff's boat came in to buzz our place. Now we don't have a dock any more because DNR. There are two pilings left
that had boat belonging to some one else. We had to pull in our sailboat and the Aqua Home so they wouldn't get impounded in OR, but the sailboat is legally licensed. And we're cleaning the Aqua Home to sell it.

Sheriff said that he was just out doing his job which seems to be harassing senior citizens. I am afraid there is no hope to the country. There truly are different laws for some folks.

Anyhow, it is not like they have repeat customers, or at least so they hope.

162 If God hadn't rested on Sunday, He would have had time to finish the world. - Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Well now, let's take a look here.

I was so proud of you, humanity. You wanna know how proud I was? I didn't think I would *have* to finish the world. I figured you guys were up to doing that *for* me.

So I did 99% of the work, and just said to you guys, okay, you take the last 1%. It should be easy, come on. Just recognize me and obey my commands.

But nope. Eve just had to have her apple. I can kind of understand, she was a good girl at heart and I'm sure it looked delicious, plus I *did* make them taste awful good. But she just had to break the rules. Hey, I wasn't going to forbid you from those apples forever, it was just a test. Oh well.

Then there was Noah, who did a good job although I had to bail him out of the drunk tank a couple times.

And on and on until we get to ol' Moses. By that time you guys were so screwed up, you were worshipping some calf made of gold. And per what Mo told me, you guys destroyed my rules before the ink was dry. (Or would have; good thing I had my Bic Tablet Chiseler handy that week.)

Finally I sent my Son down to help you personally. Oh and in case you haven't figured it out yet: HE WAS REALLY ME. You all took the tutoring so well, you murdered him on a cross.

So, okay.

Don't get me wrong. I still love you all, the way a wealthy dad loves his crazy wayward kids. I still wouldn't trade you for anything in the universe. But I've done everything I can for you. From here on out, I guess you all will have to figure things out.

And no, I'm not waiting for that last 1% to get done anymore. I figure at this stage the world is going to stay unfinished forever. Doesn't help that you have more interpretations of what I've said to you in the Bible by now, than there are stars I've created. I wanted you all to be super-creative, and you are, but ah geez, you get confused over even the absolute mindbendingly simplest instructions.

But I do love you, and I do wish you all well, and hope you all get to know me a lot better before it's too late.

Best wishes,

Toward the end, she says in paraphrase that maybe the feminists wouldn't as up in arms if they knew of all the reasons why men might want a sexbot or sex doll. I don't think it would matter one iota. They hate men, want them to be subjugated and miserable, and despise anything and everything that might bring some small bit of joy or enjoyment to their lives that isn't in direct service to women.

187 We recently gave away a sofa we had purchased used because we needed some extra room temporarily and the sofa upholstery had disintegrated from sun exposure, had stains from an old, sick cat, and the seat was not as supportive when we first got it.

We've only had used furniture in our living room. We could do used again or I see there are sofas from American Furniture for $300 or less that look okay in the pictures.

BUT, somehow I have the expectation that furniture should be attractive and functional for 30-50 years or longer. Also, I like to maximize value for my money and I fear a $300 sofa will be suboptimal. But I know nothing about what makes for a durable sofa that I won't hate as it ages.

I love this:

https://www.cb2.com/elba-sectional/s568777

I was thinking outdoor seating would be more durable and stain resistant than traditional furniture. There are no springs to start sagging. Since it is a sectional, the pieces would be easy to move. The cushions and/or upholstery can be easily replaced if they get ratty. Plus, if I ever set up a patio area, this can go outside.

Is this ridiculously expensive for what it offers? Would it look silly inside? Should I settle for a $300 sofa instead?

Also ask for a ballpark for a full refurb if you run across a used sofa you like but want fresh cushions and fabric. It might be worth your time to buy a decent type and have it redone.

Some stuff you buy you know is just the travelling collection. It comes in to your life for a while until you tire of it/no longer have a use for it/ find the perfect upgrade it was placeholding for. Craigslist and the online Facebook Flea Market is where it goes in that case.

I just got a new router yesterday, a Linksys WRT3200acm. They support OpenWRT and other expanded open source firmware.

My old one was a D-Link -- I was always partial to Linksys, having had several, but I got this D-link several years ago for some reason. There were some bugs in it and they haven't update the firmware in years, so.

Anyway, one of the bugs was it couldn't log on to Charter's 6rd IPv6 thingy. Charter claims they're going to go IPv6 native for residential, but they haven't here yet.

But the new Linksys handles the 6rd tunnel just fine, and so I'm now playing with IPv6.

I demand Ace put up an IPv6 host for this place, so I can play.

I wish I felt that way. I'm 66 and husband is 67. We have clean records. We are not criminals. We pay property taxes on two places. We have no problems at the one that is just in the county. But the one that is surrounded by wildlife refuges is technically in the city. We've been harrassed for about six years now. We have riverfront property that we can't have a dock or boat on. We just want to be left alone long enough to get both places sold and get out of here. DNR has been targeting people with some assets and making them remove docks and boats. They don't target rich people as we pointed out a number that worked on their docks without permits. The laws do not apply equally and the courts are a joke.

325 Insomniac, I think what irongrampa evokes is the sense of optimism and dynamism that is a fundamental part of American culture.

Look at those pictures of the NYC subway in the 1970s compared to the way they look now. It was so unlikely that the subway would ever be one so much cleaner and safer. I can tell you personally that when one is immersed in that milieu it is very very difficult to imagine changing circumstances.

The qualities of optimism and dynamism are visibly lacking in most other cultures, weighed down with a history of feudalism, Confucianism, mohamedanism, communism, and racism.

333 I just got a new router yesterday, a Linksys WRT3200acm.

IP6 isn't all that bad really. Things are done differently, but it isn't that hard to get the hang of. Addresses are 128 bits long. Near as can figure, the high 64-bits are what is public and what is routed, and the lower 64-bits are up to local hosts.

64-bits alone gives you a shit ton of space, and you've got another 64-bits for local shit.

Also, there is no NAT in IP6. The router in IP6 functions like a real router, not a NAT box. That sort of scared me at first, but you really on a stateful firewall in said router.

359 Looking at France, it amazes me that people will choose to allow their governments to bring in immigrants for the express purposes of watering down the power of their franchise.

Muslims are 8% of the French electorate now and vote as a block. That means that in order to win without agreeing to continue unlimited Muslim immigration a candidate has to win almost 60% of the rest of the electorate....and that number will only climb.

Pen may or may not have been a bad leader, but you cannot make a credible case that slowing down immigration, at least from Muslim countries isn't necessary to actually have a discussion about the future of the country.

The American experiment as a republic founded on limited government and enshrinement of natural rights has been in decline for about 150 years. Any society can fail, and America is on a steep trajectory for exactly that. One could argue that America, as founded, already HAS failed. We aren't eating each other in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but our current system would horrify the Founding Fathers.

There is a price to living in the greatest country in the history of the world. We live on the hill worth dying for. There will be no place for us to go if the govt really goes bad. And we shouldn't want for some far-off place. Legal immigrants had to choose between fixing their own country and moving here. And I know that probably only one of those plans was somewhat realistic. 399 It occurs to me...within the past few years there was talk about reproductive tech making men obsolete, something like taking the genetic material from ova and using it to fertilize another ova, something like that.

Fast forward, we are now on the brink of fembots and artificial wombs at the same time as the Harpies are getting their howl on to a fever pitch.

Who, again, is in danger of being obsolete...?

Neither scenario is anything other than a catastrophic mistake. But it's interesting to see how it goes when the shoe is on the other foot.

I can tie this in a bit to Insomniac's thoughts with a side trip to Heinlein, who recognized a pattern in human history of development and expansion. In short, the frontiers have always been where it's at, where it's the most free, and where it has the least badness piled up. As things settle, sooner or later those looking for freedom and sanity look to move on.

America for a long time was the safety valve for folks looking to get out. But now...where? The stupid has arrived and the sclerosis is setting in, and the only way that ever rolls back is if...well, everything else rolls back, and you reset, at very high cost.

Or...you find a new frontier.

We need to find a way off this rock. It might be our only hope to keep from stagnating, stifling, and rotting.

402 Here's a head scratcher.

"Europe" has to "bring in Muslim refugees" because their native populace is getting older and there aren't enough workers to pay the pensions. At least that's how I understand it.

What I don't understand is how these unskilled Muslims who despise their host nation, don't know the language and expect to be taken care of for life as conquerors are going to fill jobs and pay for the pensions of the native Eurotrash.

Europeans who felt stifled and oppressed went to the New World to find freedom.

Americans who felt stifled and oppressed on the East Coast traveled west to find freedom.

Now that the entire Earth is settled, the only way to keep the dream of freedom alive is to set sail once again, out there...

Favorite Texas joke (from the movie True Stories":

God was working around the earth here (Texas), trying to make it beautiful just like the rest of the world. He had to knock off because it was nighttime. And He said, "I'll come back tomorrow and make it just as pretty as the rest of the world, with lakes and streams and mountains and trees." And He got back the next day, and saw that the ground had completely hardened, like concrete. And He didn't want to begin all over again. No! In His infinite wisdom, He had an idea. He said: "I know what I'll do. I'll make some people that like it this way!"

I don't think those things are related at all. Both are a pain.

But...the photographer that I have to work with who is a diagnosed narcissist has finally gotten on our bosses last nerve. He did a job last year, and none of the shots he took were usable. Worst work he's ever done. Someone had to be sent out to re-do the job. Now said narcissist has decided that he was Wronged and actually sent the boss an invoice for the job, saying he deserves a kill fee. You don't get kill fees when your work is unacceptable. Also.. no contract is involved.

Well, after dealing with guys antics for the past seven years or so, the boss hit the wall and said "we're not using him anymore." I hope he sticks to that decision.

Interesting what the college campus has turned into, no? Years and years ago, dorms were segregated by sex, and females needed chaperones? Wonder why?

Not too long ago, a male student at one of our fine institutions of higher learning was at a get together and passed out, from heavy drinking. A female at one point, "performed a sex act" on him. Later, weeks or months even, she decided this was rape. I'm not making this up. At least in the good old days there was a method to the madness, eh?

I haven't heard the tape, but it should probably be pointed out - since they brought it up - there are a certain number of women who would enjoy having a billionaire grab just about anything. Pointing out the obvious is now cause for white-hot rage, not a cause for self-examination. And they are actively trying to codify that into law. The insanity on the college campus is especially sobering, or should be, because they are "proving grounds" for psy-ops. It's what they plan for the rest of society, make no mistake. I heard the rumblings for homosexual marriage years before it made popular culture. I thought they were nuts, and wondered why universities couldn't focus on learning.

517 For thousands of years, there was a practical preventive measure against obese poor people: starvation. Now, like every public policy area, the government has screwed up and there is a plague of obese poor people upon the land.

Posted by: RioBravo at May 07, 2017 11:23

We didn't just screw things up, here, but did the same thing around the world. When we fed people in countries that couldn't get themselves together enough to sustain their own populations we did nothing more than help incompetent, corrupt and evil governments stay in power by alleviating them of their most basic tasks and freeing them to pursue more onerous and dangerous aims. Sure, people can't stand to see Sally Struthers parade around starving little kids ... but the first thing that has to go in countries like that are the governments. Instead, we feed their people and let those in charge off the hook - basically keeping them in power and ensuring that worse is to come.

There is sensible charity and then there is stupidity pursued only to make oneself feel better - damn the consequences.

This idea that we need to bail out every organization that is unable to perform its most essential duties (which has become epidemic in this era) is one of the stupidest and most destructive set of policies, ever.

I have stayed away from last spring/summer to take care of my roses.
I meant to be back in the fall, but I know my neck feels much better when I'm not reading iPad at all.

I believe it was three years ago that I set up a gmail account & Lindafell suggested email address. Now I receive most of the emails I've subscribed to, three paid subscriptions that Comcast completely blocked & one they sent sender that it was Spam. I did receive email that wrote I marked it as Spam, but I certainly would not do that with one I pay $30 per year. If I accidentally hit "unsubscribe or Spam" it would be in my sent items.
I've had gmail account for at least three years, possibly four.
How do I add senders to that address book?
I have looked around & haven't found a way to add to address book.

I know The Horde will have the answer.

I can't stay because I had neck injection a few days ago & i have one of those ice packs one cracks to open on injection site.

Thank you!

Posted by: Farmer at May 08, 2017 12:36 AM (o/90i)

Farmer- I had 2 surgeries 10 years apart (2000, 2010) for herniated discs. First L4/L5 then L5/S1. I was about 35 the first time, 45 the second, so I can't really speak from experience regarding surgery at your age. However, as you get older your ability to quickly recover from surgery and have a successful outcome is reduced. If you're certain more conservative treatment won't provide relief or will only postpone the inevitable, then I say get it done while you're young.

First time I went through it I endured months of excruciating pain, futilely going through PT, having to get a laptop so I could work lying down on the floor in my office, etc., until my doc finally ordered an MRI and saw that the disc was fully collapsed. After the surgery the surgeon told me the pulp had fully extruded out of the disc and like silly string it had wrapped around my sciatic nerve.

The second time, in addition to the pain I had some paralysis in my toes, so my doc fast-tracked my surgery. This time they used minimally invasive techniques so recovery was much quicker. The pain was instantly eliminated after the surgery, but it took 6 months or more to regain full movement and feeling in my toes.

Anyway, I recommend going for it. With the minimally invasive methods used today there's little reason to suffer unnecessarily.

Thanks, Average Guy. These are not on a showroom floor, so the only way to test comfort is to buy and try.

My main concern, assuming comfort is adequate, is whether the price is reasonable for how durable/functional it is likely to be. If so, it may be worthwhile to get it and see if I like the comfort level. I'd take it back if it doesn't pass the butt test.

My last sofa was used. It was comfy at first and then the springs sagged and it didn't support comfortably.

525 Farmer,
I had two neck surgeries both to fix cervical canal damaged discs. One in 2000 & second in 2004. I was back to work in two weeks in 2000, but second involved plate & screw & it took me at least two months to fully recover. One was 17 years ago, second 12 years ago

I'm sure they have improved surgical techniques in those years. It didn't seem that long ago until I posted this.

If surgery is best option per a trusted surgeon that is not knife happy, ask all your questions before you have it.

I never wanted to know details & that was rather stupid of me.
Good luck.

527 ortho surgeries are like luggage

they never go away and they are cumulative

IMHO, don't get one unless you NEED one (i've had 2)

and shop around until you get the right surgeon and/or right eval that you actually need op, and there are no other choices.

also, if you do need one, get the simplest, least invasive one that will deal with your issue.

531 Hat, I think I've heard beer is good for your bones as well.

Anyway, I do enjoy a margarita.

Oh, I just spent an hour on her YT channel. She's a keeper. With that eyeliner reminds me of "Boxxy" the once "Queen of /b/", but without the annoying Minnie Mouse voice.

534 redc1c4,
Yes, what you wrote about orthopedic surgeries is true. Take away a disc & you have some new issue from removed disc, even though it was replaced by either a bone graft, or in second surgery in 2004 a metal plate & screws.
12+ years later I don't know details of 2004 neck surgery. Except a few weeks later I started to have tingle or twitch in upper left arm, until later in 2005 it turned into numb left arm. Then it became full time burning, that's why I had neck injection a few days ago & every year when it starts to act up. Occasionally I can fix it, but only by sitting with both shoulders completely against back of chairs. I can't do anything sitting like that except watch television & I don't watch television often.

Good Night, Horde.

My shoulder is fine. Pain is from disc pressing on nerves. I'm going back May 16 for second one in same spot.

536 At least you're not 3/4s awake telling yourself you're 1/2 asleep. Put on a pot of coffee and play some guitar or something.

537 Anyway, I recommend going for it. With the minimally invasive methods used today there's little reason to suffer unnecessarily.

Been there, done that. I've gotten eight hours over the past two days, so I'm good.

Scratch that. I had a one hour nap yesterday afternoon, which was nice.

I can't drink coffee anymore because I get panic attacks. I guess I'll have to learn the guitar... lol.

It's kind of misleading. They died in a car from carbon monoxide fumes while the woman was performing oral sex. This was in Taipei.

Two people were killed and eight others were wounded in an attack at the

Ho, Hum, just another day, suppose it had been warmer, this number would have been higher, as gang-bangers don't like cold weather.

Guess Brighton Park is gonna move up the list now. Better get busy though if they have hopes of reaching Austin levels of death and destruction.

552 I'm no ornithologist, but I do feed a few birds in the backyard.

They probably start at first light. Some birds do get overly excited about spring, what with the start of mating season and all, so they may have started extra early.

Was crossing the street, staying far away from the broken sewer grate, a bus coming towards me started to slow down. I didn't want him to stop for me, so I backed up at an angle, and fell down the sewer with the broken grate.
