Logan's Run was a big hit at the time.
Between 2001 and Star Wars, science fiction films were primarily earthbound social SF. Star Wars proved you could do special effects and space opera and have it be successful, so studios were more willing to spend the money after that. Posted by: Mr. Peebles at May 06, 2017 08:23 AM (oVJmc) 40

Remember the Rockville HS rape case with the 14-year-old victim and the two illegal alien perps?
All charges were dropped yesterday. Prosecutor said there were too many inconsistencies to get a conviction. The Obama kids were charged with possessing and distributing child porn because the girl had sent them nudie pics. Something is definitely wrong in our society and our schools. RE that HS rape story....
Let's not lose sight of the real issue here. The real issue is the fact that 18 year old yutes who are here in the states illegally and who have no background check or evaluation of personal or social skills are being integrated with your school aged kids who themselves have less than adequate personal or social skills and apparently no one at the school or the school administration has any issue with that. Because your tax dollars are paying for it. Posted by: CrotchetyOldJarhead at May 06, 2017 08:37 AM (BioQc) 55

Presidential Win" keeps stalking through our society. Just looking at their determination to carry on TEH Reezeetanz- i.e.. just keep cranking out all the silly/horrible crap they had on tap over a year ago in planning- means it would now be 10X worse if Hillary! were actually Prez. Even little things..like this Spring there's a ton of fymynyst slogan T-shirts from every major and minor designer- your daughters as walking billboards for the Progs Glorious Cultural Revolution. That's why it was so important to have gotten wins for Trump in the "continuing resolution". The Wall would've been enough as a start plus, restoring the free market sales of health ins even without touching Obamacare would've been a huge victory- and sign that all their cultural posturing means nothing in the face of political reality. Giving the progtards hope that violence and counter-reality posturing can bring political victory- only makes Trump's and the Rep's job harder. Assuming the Reps actually want to restore America and the Middle Class- an iffy proposition at best. Posted by: naturalfake at May 06, 2017 09:01 AM (9q7Dl) 72

re gluten -- I've previously linked here about a study that shows that 90% of people on gluten free diets have no real reason to be doing it. Essentially, if you don't have a diagnosis of celiac disease, you're chasing a phantom. And since I am on a diet related topic, check out this blog link to read about a long hidden study about how replacing saturated fats with vegetable oil increases the risk of death: http://preview.tinyurl.com/muw8f3h What makes it persuasive is the size and the quality of the controls they have on the study, using institutionalized people as the study subjects (where exact diets are known/controlled). The other theory is one favoured by marijuana advocates, who argue Canadian women's rights activist Emily Murphy created the "war on drugs" mentality in Canada by convincing federal law makers to ban marijuana through the arguments made in her book The Black Candle.
Published in 1922, the book is a racist anti-immigration and anti-drug manifesto, which exaggerates the ill effects of marijuana as a cause of crime. Does. Not. Compute. Does. Not. Compute. Looked at a garden patch that I really have to clear of misc bush-type weeds, but it is next to a neighbor's flowering bush (some kind of dogwood) that makes me wheeze. I think I'll wait a bit to clear that out. So, still pretty much housebound with leftover cold and allergies. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara I think conservatives too often think (understandably) that if they find an "immune" spokesman for conservatism, this will somehow get them a hearing. We chase after people "Fiorina's a woman, and conservatish, Carson's black and is conservatish". It doesn't seem to work. Liberals smell conservatism a mile away, and that cancels out the immunity from slander, violence, exclusion, etc. For instance Ayan Hirsi-Ali's talk at *Brandeis* was cancelled because Muslim activists objected to her, and of course the administration kowtowed to their demands. I think you're right, but the actual target is the young, reflexive, lib and the idea is to make them question what they have been taught about conservatives. Don't know how well it works but it's worth a try.
Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at May 06, 2017 12:44 PM (sEDyY) That's my take, too. Milo's young, hip, outrageous, iconoclastic ... and conservative. He's also fun, and makes a distinct contrast from the bitter scolds and nannies of the Left. He's fighting on the cultural war level, which could at least in principle make conservativism "cool." Sound impossible? Yeah, it does. But then I remember that there was a time when blacks, homosexuals, and Commies were all outside the mainstream of culture, too. He's also a brilliant marketer. There was a reason for the "unconventional" tableau he presented. Besides reaching out to the tolerant of diversity crowd, he added the gun-toting pin-ups to keep the hetero 2nd amendment dudes in his corner. Posted by: kallisto at May 06, 2017 12:54 PM (kD8Fh) 349
I think conservatives too often think (understandably) that if they find an "immune" spokesman for conservatism, this will somehow get them a hearing. We chase after people "Fiorina's a woman, and conservatish, Carson's black and is conservatish".
Posted by: Steve and Cold Bear at May 06, 2017 12:38 PM (vRcUp) Absolutely true, but I think there's a fundamental difference with Milo. Fiorina and Carson belong to protected groups, but neither has the star power or charisma of a Milo (nor the birth certificate; they're both geezers by the standards of the young). Furthermore, neither one is as outrageous as Milo, who naturally attracts attention, and who happily flouts social convention. All in all, he may be able to attract a following among the young, and get them to reconsider their reflexive leftism. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at May 06, 2017 12:57 PM (SRKgf) 350

I put up a new open thread for those so inclined. Have fun.

There is an undercurrent of rebellion against reflexive leftism, and it's happening on the new media. YouTube, twitter, livestreams, 4chan, is where the kiddos congregate for their news and political discussion. Alphabet media is for their parents and grandparents. The Trump presidency is a serious blow to the forward march of Soros/Alinsky Inc. The youth rebellion would have continued even had Hillary won; however she and her flying monkeys would have had more power to shut down dissent. With Trump admin in office, the underground is a free speech and oppo zone. Posted by: kallisto at May 06, 2017 01:05 PM (kD8Fh) 353
