The old movies really are the best ones. And by old, I mean anything made yesterday is probably worlds better than anything made today, and tomorrow's releases will be even worse.

Watched "A History of Violence" last night. Remembered liking it quite a bit years ago, and it really holds up well.

The movie takes the time to develop its characters enough to actually care about them.

Nobody is saving the world. It's a far easier story to relate to than a bunch of guys and gals in shiny pajamas. "History" is simply about a man trying to keep his past from stealing his present.

The violence is short, effective and fairly brutal without being murder porn. Tip to Hollywood: WWE isn't real.* When real people get hit with a baseball bat, it tends to take the fight right out of them.

And Maria Bello.

* don't take that wrong -- no doubt they are damn fine athletes for the most part, and dishing and taking all sorts of punishment with the crazy stunts they pull to entertain us.

3 Trump fed some more red meat to his conservative supporters when he went to the NRA convention and told the members that the 8 year war against the second amendment was dead now. And I take exception to this BS statement by Fox in the article.

During the presidential race, he became a champion of gun rights and often spoke about his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's intent to abolish the Second Amendment, a claim she never made.

Scankles spoke out against guns at every campaign stop and made no secret of her desire to implement radical gun control all the way down to confiscating guns. If that is not "doing away with the second amendment I will eat a horse.

22 The GOP is an illigitimate political party composed mainly of free agents, "mavericks," DIABLOS and fucktards.

They are intentionally sabotaging and throwing away this once in a lifetime opportunity to effect an real change.

My prediction is no Obamacare repeal, no tax cuts, no budget, nothing of substance legislatively and nothing that can ever be construed as a win for Trump.

They are waiting him out and hoping they can do enough damage that he is not re-elected.

They are also slow rolling his appointments which by the current timeline, Trump will have all of his appointments in roughly six years.

Older movies were made primarily for an American audience (and, depending on how far back you go, for an adult American audience).

Today's movies are made for the foreign box office (especially China). Plots are simpler, the language is more elementary to facilitate translation, and its chock full of spectacle.

The movie industry isn't making movies for us anymore.

79 Here's another question for the Horde.

My brother has had Type 2 diabetes for more than 20 years. He had his left leg amputated below the knee about 4 years ago, and now he is going to lose the right leg as well. He's looking at months of rehab from the surgery and then for getting new prostheses.

He's also a diehard Cubs fan whose all time favorite Cub was Ron Santo, who also had diabetes and was a double amputee for the last decade or so of his life. In fact, just knowing that Ron Santo went through the same thing he is has actually been a significant morale booster for my brother.

So here's my question. How would I go about arranging for someone connected to Ron Santo (e.g. his widow, one of his kids, a former teammate), his foundation, or the Cubs organization to visit him while he's recovering (since it's obviously no longer possible to get Ron himself)? I KNOW that would really, really make his day, or his year, or his decade. If I could arrange it as a surprise with some of his friends that would be even better. Maybe Grammie Winger has some ideas?

91 "The movie industry isn't making movies for us anymore."

Hollywood isn't making movies for us any more, but there are movies out there that are worth seeing.

My wife, the lovely and gracious Annalucia, and I went to see a documentary called "In Search of Israeli Cuisine". It's a delightful film, for anyone who's interested in food, or Israel, or the Middle East in general. It's cautiously optimistic. After seeing it, I wanted to hop in a plane to Israel.

It also had one of the more humorous lines I've heard in a movie in quite a while. The narrator, an Israeli-American restauranteur, tells an Israeli winemaker that he doesn't drink.

Winemaker: Don't drink? Why?

Restauranteur: I'm allergic.

Winemaker: Allergic? How can you be allergic to wine?

Restauranteur: When I drink, I tend to break out in handcuffs and police cars.

That drew a laugh from the audience. I found it a graceful way of describing what, obviously, is a very serious problem.

My wife went to see a Turkish film, "Kedi" (Turkish for "Cat") about the street cats of Istanbul. It seems that Istanbul is populated with thousands of street cats, which are cared for by the locals without belonging to any individual. (I didn't go: I like cats, but I'm very allergic to them.) There are lots of views of street life in Istanbul (which, my wife reports, looks surprisingly clean). There was one small political statement: one shot showed a political graffito, "ERDO GONE" written on a wall in the background. Otherwise, it's about cats, and Turks, and Istanbul. Much of the photography is shot at the cat's-eye level - about ankle-level for a human; and how they did it is beyond me. Again, well worth seeing.

My kids are chatting up the new "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie, which will be out on Friday. Me, I feel like someone who's been offered his 22nd brownie: the first few were enjoyable, but now even of the thought of one makes me ill. However, if you're willing to look around and deal with subtitles, you'll find movies that are enjoyable, beautiful, and worth seeing by grown-ups.
