Remember the rioting that broke out in Washington DC during PDT's inauguration? I'll bet that most of them thought they could get away with it. And among those that were arrested, I'll bet most of them thought they'd get some not-too-large fine, or parole, or community service.
Yeah, well, maybe not:A grand jury in the Superior Court of D.C. returned a superseding indictment in the Inauguration Day felony rioting case Thursday, the U.S. Attorney's Office of D.C. reports...Approximately 212 people face felony charges...Additional charges have been added to some of the defendants cases, including destruction of property involving damage to a limousine.The way to stop rioting is by vigorous, aggressive police action. Of course, everybody knows this. The mayor of Baltimore knows this. The mayor of Ferguson knows this. Even that adipose porker who runs Berkeley knows this. But they chose to not make any attempt to restrain the rioting because, bottom line, they have more sympathy for the goals and aspirations of the circus freak show rioters than they do with law-abiding citizens, i.e. normal people of their communities. So the cities burned. I only wish there was a way to tell the normal people, "hey, the authorities are not on your side. They will sit back and watch you and everything you've built burn if it means they can further their agenda." You would think Berkeley would at least be receptive, but the people there keep electing the same crew year after year. And pride themselves on how progressive they are.

They have not been enforcing said laws, using 'Prosecutorial Discretion' as their excuse...
But, they have used said PRIVILEGE to ignore the laws they do not want to prosecute.
We need to take a hard look at that 'privilege'... because 'equal' application of the law IS in the Constitution.... I don't see anyplace where a Prosecutor or Politician can then use something the legal system made up to ignore the law.

Having once lived just outside of DC, the protests do get tiresome. The marches on the national mall happen all the time, so that's no big deal. It's when you get Lefty tools who decide they want to stir up trouble, like setting a bunch of tires on fire on the GW parkway during morning rush hour. It's part of living in/near DC, but there are limits to the locals' patience.
I recall after one Bush-era anti-war protest where they marched from the mall to the Pentagon there were mass arrests - and these idiots were on tv whining about how it was taking 8 hrs for the police to process them, and *gulp* they didn't even offer vegetarian food to the arrestees!! Charge all of the rioters or expect a lot more over the next four years.

Tear away even one of the assumptions though. They will tantrum yugely in response to consequences but they will learn the lesson and tone it down with a few short repetitions in cities that still believe in the impartial application of the rule of law.
The American left are entitled cowards, they have no spirit to fight when it requires risking their own life, liberty, or property. Their baseline expectation that their safety/health, food, shelter, and freedom are perpetually secured (by someone else) is non-negotiable. Their whole model fails if that assumption is rejected.

I wouldn't be so sure of that. If the company that sponsored the event is a US based company I think they can easily be sued regardless of where the event took place.
People routinely take cruise lines to court in the US when the incidents often take place overseas.

I'm sure some American court would be happy to worm its way into this but I don't think that's right. If you have something that happens outside of America then there is really no way for an American court to be able to determine many of the facts of the case - since the event happened outside of its jurisdiction - way outside of the jurisdiction of any American governmental arm.
Of course, these are the same sorts of American courts that found that Arizona was acting in violation of ... something ... when they reported illegals to the federal government, so logic doesn't really carry us very far.

I think you need to note *where* the Black Bloc pulls their antics.
They do this in Berkeley, not Knoxville. And I think the reason is pretty clear. They will not act up outside of their "safe spaces", their sanctuaries. Adjust your thinking to that and you can see where it would be easier to start reclaiming ground from them, pushing them into fewer and fewer places.
The Right needs to do a lot less ranting and hand-wringing and much more thinking along the lines of "Where are they vulnerable?" and start hitting them there.

I disagree. American based companies that take on events like this have a responsibility to deliver what they promise regardless of where the event takes place. If you take a United flight to Canada and it crashes in Canada do you lose your rights just because the plane is in the land of moose and hockey pucks?
This appears to be a pretty blatant case of fraud and while I am enjoying hearing about these twits I don't think they lose their rights just because they are assholes.

The vermin in California, the 'pillow case rapist', attacked more than 70 women. he was released because his sentence was over. No one believes that he's feminist friend #1, cleaned up his act. They tried involuntary commitment, and were forced to let him out. They spent hundred of thousands of dollars giving him a house and benefits. last i heard, they managed to bag him again on a parole violation.

IMO, "funny" seems to be a lost art with many of today's filmmakers. What humor there is appears to be cruel, mocking or sexually-twisted.

(1) Most of them are leftists themselves, which trumps all else unless it is their precise property being destroyed. They agree with the rioters and sympathize with them. A fair number might be former activists themselves.
(2) I don't know Berkley's layout, but suspect the rioting is away from the homes of the citizens and they do not feel personally endangered or that their homes are threatened with damage.
(3) They have a visceral distrust for police and law enforcement in general. This extends to the use of force on people who, in large part, they sympathize with.
(4) Even if they aren't leftists, most of the others are probably "moderates" at best and might not want to get involved or ruffle the prevailing left wing zeitgeist.
(5) Anyone disposed to complain or change things knows they are tilting at windmills when the local government not only is unresponsive, but is actively and openly supportive of the rioters.

Check the terms and conditions (maybe printed on the back of the ticket). They may be required to arbitrate any dispute. I don't think there would be a problem bringing this case in a U.S. Court (whether a state court or federal court)
The Bahamas has a court system, but i doubt it would be particularly sympathetic to a bunch of wealthy Americans who came down to party hard and were not able too.

No. I cited two examples of where either people WERE released, or were set to be released. And no one but their lawyers and the pro-crime lobby think that they are not a menace. The governor of NY stuck his nose into a case, changing a life sentence to one with the possibility of parole. Fortunately, it was stopped. This time.
According to some here, these people should automatically get their rights restored. Just because a parole board turfed someone does NOT mean that their rights should be restored.

I think it is in large part blamable on the highly improvisational nature of modern comedies. They set up cameras and wait for actors to be funny.
That can work in short bits, but it's hard to carry a movie for 90 minutes like that.
I think back to what might be my favorite comedy of the last couple of decades: Galaxy Quest.
That movie works first as a drama. Tim Allen's character has an arc. He grows. The world is cohesive. The action is reasonably well done. And on top of that, there are a bunch of very funny jokes.
Most comedies don't seem built that way.

In the case I cited in Louisiana, the only reason parole was stopped was because a reporter asked the governor about the case. No one bothered to contact the families, and the parole board was happy to spring him.
In the California case, the authorities HAD to let him out.
The ones that attacked the jogger in Central Park were released because of political pressure. On of them is already dead due to some other crime.
None of this is as simple as "keep them in".

That's another problem. Vulgarity is used in place of punch lines.
I watched Sausage Party when it came to Netflix, and probably it's biggest problem is that there's no buildup to the raunchiness. It just starts that way.
The trailer works better because it makes the grocery store seem very lovey dovey and innocent before the mask gets ripped off. The movie itself begins with a song that's full of "fucks", so that when the violence of the real world is revealed, there's no real change in how the character's talk. The cursing COULD have been funny if used intelligently, but it was simply used ubiquitously.

And it's because Alan Rickman's character is an actual character. He cares about things. He's driven by something. He wants something that is understandable (respect). And when he meets this alien that looks up to him because of the character that he's grown to abhor, they bond, and the alien dies in his arms, we understand exactly why he's reciting the line and how it connects the two characters.
It really is a wonderful moment.

Like Dragnet. I didn't laugh very much, but Joe Friday's character arc mostly worked so it felt like the jokes should have landed better. Comedy is such a specific thing that I try to not get too in the weeds on it.

They tried involuntary commitment, and were forced to let him out. They spent hundred of thousands of dollars giving him a house and benefits. last i heard, they managed to bag him again on a parole violation.

But, since they're in the Bahamas (assuming that's where this is) that's their problem. It's not as if they didn't know where they were going to. US courts have no jurisdiction there.
Now, I am not saying that you folks aren't correct - that US courts will likely stick their noses in this - but only that it's totally and completely wrong to do. Of course, we have US laws that dictate how Americans can act outside of America (having nothing to do with waging war against America), which are also totally un-Constitutional and unmitigated bullshit. But ... they are AMerican laws (that apply to the whole galaxy) and give that eurotrash sort of sense that Americans are property of the federal government, no matter where they are.

I recommended Mad to a woman I know. She's probably in her early 40s, if that.
Couldn't even make it through 20 minutes. Said it was too slow and boring.

Agreed, but sadly, what we're seeing now in Arkansas is utterly no concern for the lives destroyed or ruined; only concern for the murderers. There were few images of those killed, and in many cases, no names.

You are also conflating "felon" with "violent, dangerous criminal" without realizing that many non-violent (but still potentially serious) crimes are or can be felonies, such as lying to federal agents, "structuring" bank deposits/withdrawals a certain way, turning in false fire alarms, etc. There are probably very few people who haven't committed at least one act that could, under just the right circumstances, be construed as a felony if someone caught them at it. So you might want to think really long and hard about assuming that all felons should be deprived of their civil rights for life...

I hope it's an edition with the whole thing. Years ago, when it first came out on VHS (shut up, I know you weren't born yet) I bought it for my husband for Christmas. It's a long movie so it was on two VHS cassettes.
Then, when it first came out on DVD, I bought that. The first time we watched it we knew instantly that some scenes had been cut out. Bad, very bad.
One other thing - when I first bought it for my husband, I bought it because I remembered seeing it as a kid and laughing my head off. After I bought it, I wondered if it was going to be one of those things where what seemed funny as a kid didn't seem so funny as an adult.
Nope. Not only did it hold up, it was even funnier than I remembered.

After the last time we talked about it, I decided to watch some recent films, and three in particular worth mentioning:
The Lobster. Very very VERY dry humor, and a weird, sometimes disturbing story. People go to this resort to find their soul mate, and if after a set number of days you don't? You get turned into an animal. You get to choose.
The Voices. Ryan Reynolds is insane. His cat and dog talk to him (hence the title). Never has insanity and serial killing been funnier... but again, you have to appreciate the dryness of it, and if you don't I could imagine hating this film. Also... my new girlfriend, Anna Kendrick. I love her so much I want to have her babies.
Seven Psychopaths. I really liked it a lot. It's about what the title says. Sam Rockwell, as he often does, steals the movie. You have to appreciate violence, or else don't watch it.

I'll check it out, thanks. He absolutely wrecked the place in Moon. It couldn't have been easy to play about 85% of a film by yourself but that was amazing work. I don't think I've seen him in anything else though.
