Trump to Open Atlantic Ocean to Oil Exploration; May Finally Overturn Ban on Drilling in the Alaska National Wilderness Reserve (ANWR)

Remember ANWR?

That's not actually on the table, yet, but Trump has directed the DOE to review Obama's various bans on oil exploration, including in national parks.

First reported by Axios, the 'Executive Order Implementing an America-First Offshore Energy Strategy' would initiate a review of the locations available for off-shore oil and gas exploration.
The executive order would also look into the regulations currently governing off-shore oil and gas exploration, as Trump has continually promised to kill off business-curbing rules.
...

Beyond offshore drilling, Trump's executive orders will target some of President Obama's national parks designations made, as labeling areas a national monument makes them off-limits to drilling, fishing and mining.

By the way: You know who doesn't want Alaska pumping out oil?

Putin.

And Saudi Arabia.

Low oil prices are objectively good for the American economy and good for its foreign policy goals -- most major oil exporters are hostile or at best frenemies, and being able to open the spigots whenever we want to send a message would be a terrific piece of foreign policy leverage that also amounts to putting money in American pockets.

He says he ain't going. But how many will stay to farm?

It is another issue to consider ... food ... and the land. Of what else is America made? Ethanol used up some of the excess food production ... supported prices a little. Some other ideas are welcome ... local horticulture projects, sure maybe, I have some ideas. Leftist regimes collapse when they don't support their farmers ... Zimbabwe ... South Africa ... Venezuela?

Just a thought ... but yes, drill baby drill. HURRAY.

Several problems with that logic. One: so should we demand the pumping out of the Permian Basin (just south of me) stop on that basis? Two: even IF an executive order opening up ANWR to drilling was done right now, no oil would flow from there at LEAST until this time in 2027 or so - and even then, that's IF market conditions are such to permit the economic feasibility of the production.

Here's why the drilling should continue: read your history. The Russians have been notorious one-trick ponies when it comes to world markets. Rarely do they have anything on offer other than natural resources. For decades, wheat was their biggest export, and Odessa was one of the world's great wheat ports due to the insatiable European appetite. The Russians made a mint on that for quite awhile. Then, from 1865 on, when the Great Plains were settled and farmed on both sides of the 49th Parallel, wheat began to flood the market. Argentina eventually got in the game and Canada, Argentina and the United States began flooding European markets with cheaper, better quality wheat, which proved very costly to the Russians. In fact, you could make an argument that this, by setting off other events, led to the Russian Revolution.

The Russian budget of modern times is tied to the oil price. It assumes high prices of oil (something like $85-90 a barrel) and without those prices, the Putin-led mafia will not be able to distribute the goodies to its acolytes the way it could otherwise. Keep the oil price down to, say, $40-50, and watch the Russians squirm.

290 "Ethanol ... hurray ... (play the needle scratching across the record soundbite) ... ummm. OK, I support the ethanol thingy cuz it supports food production. I know you morons think it is only about BigAg and Monsanto ... but the family farm is in danger, and the ag kids all are moving to the city.

That big red area on voter maps is turning bluer as fewer farmers or bigger money buys up family farms by the day. THIS should be a concern, even though I will die on my little place without child and nothing will influence my life much (physically). Yet I am surrounded by families with kids that have no interest in staying ... and what happens if farms and all land goes "corporate"?"

I didn't realize all that government support to IA for the ethanol boondoggle preserved IA as a "red" state...here's a crazier idea...why not let the MARKET work? Why not allow farmers of all types (I am surrounded by them) pitch their products to whoever, for whatever they want to do with it?

By the way, in this very rural county, the Dem party HQ went bye-bye. So much for this county, at least, turning purple. (Your suggested cures WILL DEFINITELY turn large portions of the country deep blue as they become increasingly dependent on the government to prop up your romanticized vision.)
