115 CBD, Thanks so much for introducing me to this artist. I love the way he varies his color palette to establish the mood and setting of the scene. There is plenty of detail without disrupting the 'artsy' romantic feel. And the scene is pleasant and could (as you suggested) lead to some interesting activity. I looked at a few of his other works on Wiki and they have similar attractive and interesting qualities.

Apparently William John Hennessy did wood cuts to illustrate books. I intend to look into that.

The only place to eat was the O Club. Almost no women. Every guy shooting his watch and wearing his flight suit and following me around.

He was on his first night off. He wore his khakis. His roomate literally dragged me over to talk to him. He talked about books and art. He didnt take any of my shit either. I was smitten.

The next day he stole his units bread truck to take me to lunch at the golf course, overlooking the Patriot Missile Batteries. We've been together ever since.

Yes. It should also include luminescent moonlight, a bubbling brook, a cozy cottage with the warm glow of candlelight from inside, moss-covered stones, a riverstone chimney with a fine spire of woodsmoke, fir trees, and a Hefty bag of dismembered body parts next to the cheerful little red front door.

in graduate religion classes (I was taking Islamic studies for my

It was both sad and funny and really irritating at the same time.

I'm so sorry, Willow. I know that feeling achingly well, and wish there were something I could say to make you happy. I don't like where I am or what I am or anything else about myself. Not that I would be happier in another time or place, but how much worse could it be? Of course, Somewhere In Time addressed that longing, as I'm sure you know.

Did you see the article the other day by some fool who wrote how all of us are richer than John D. Rockefeller ever was? What it came down to was claptrap that we have easy access to exotic food and more ways to entertain ourselves than ol' John D. So in the writer's estimation, "rich" equaled "ability to be endlessly, distractedly amused."

362 She has a very shapely thigh. She seems to be barefoot under that fabric, so I'm thinking it's a throw of some sort and not the bottom of her gown. Her shawl is askew.

She is in a notable state of deshabille. Significantly, his spoon is lying flat on the saucer, her spoon is inserted into the cup.

She is giving him all the signals that he's not picking up on. He looks bored and defeated because he's trying to pay attention to her thoughts on the Bronte trollops. That's not the way into her corset, brother, she's asking to be ravished.

365 Did you see the article the other day by some fool who wrote how all of us are richer than John D. Rockefeller ever was? What it came down to was claptrap that we have easy access to exotic food and more ways to entertain ourselves than ol' John D. So in the writer's estimation, "rich" equaled "ability to be endlessly, distractedly amused."

Is it the trappings of the place and time we long for, or simply a wish for a place in time that feels right, that makes sense to us and makes us feel as if we belong?

I've mentioned before the idea of "loss of place". I've been feeling it hardcore for some years--I think many of us were during the Obama years; I suspect our adversaries on the Left are feeling it now.

We can confront it in two ways: retreat into nostalgia, or building the world we want. The first is tempting. The second, I think, is far more productive.

But when not everyone agrees what world should be built...ah, there's the rub...

408 Is it the trappings of the place and time we long for, or simply a wish for a place in time that feels right, that makes sense to us and makes us feel as if we belong?

An excellent question, Brother Cavil, and one that leads itself to a nice long discussion over some adult beverages.

In my case, something of both. I prefer the style of the 1890 - 1920 period (but will, in all honesty, having just got off a nasty asthma attack, thank heavens for modern medicine), and would like to return even to the early 1960s, when men dressed like men and not overgrown kids and ladies dressed like ladies.

But the time itself has never felt right to me. Even as a child, I always felt out of place, as though I ought to have been born decades earlier. And, I suppose, part of it is that I don't feel as though I have any purpose in this time other than to be a tax slave.

I feel that I've watched 50-odd years of my life drift away, which is my own psychological burden and has nothing to do with the current times and tempers. I suppose the bottom line is that I wish I were comfortable as myself, and wonder if I would have been if, for example, I was standing on the corner of Sunset and Vine on a warm April morning in 1912, smelling the eucalyptus and watching the sun rise on a beautiful, clear California morning.

Thank God we now have medical insurance if he needs to go see someone for longer term. I've always told my kids that the teenage years are the hardest. So don't be fooled by movies and tv shows that show all teens having a great time, all the time. Teens have one foot in childhood and one foot in adulthood, and that causes a lot of anxiety.

Anyway, prayers ascending!

Read a WashPost article yesterday about how the WHCD has died/been reborn this year. Apparently they reached peak celebrity/president-and-WH staff schmoozing during O's reign, and it is now going back to its roots of being just an industry thing focused on journalists. The writer made it sound like it was totally their decision, not that they really couldn't stand the thought of doing this with a president they detest. Because all those selfies with the latest hot actresses/actors was shallow (uh huh).Whatever, right?

However, Samantha Bee's "Not WHCD" that is taped hours before the real one will be brimming with celebrities/amateur-pundit comedians. If I had to bet, I would say Hillary and/or Obama appears at Bee's party because they love celebrities, and celebrities lurve them right back.

Friend of mine bought and restored/modernized a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights a while back. In keeping with tradition the kitchen was on the, just below grade, ground floor which opened onto the backyard. He installed a range hood that vented up the common chimney of the house. When it was on full bore it practically sucked all the oxygen out of the house (aided by the natural pull of the flu). Needless to say, there were no lingering food smell problems. The best part was the workman who installed the hood and fan had a great sense of humor and at one point said, in his thick Jamaican accent "What de hell is wit you white folks an' not wantin' to smell your food, mon?"

The first one, thoroughly. The second one, to a lesser extent. No wonder the man had a scotch neat in his hand and that constipated look on his face every other minute of the show.

Draper should've married Peggy and taught her about sex. The naughty kind.

There was a couple of episodes of Enterprise when an alternate (evil) first Enterprise crew went forward in time and encountered the future Enterprise from the 1960's series.

They remarked how sleek it was, or something.
Which was hard to believe because in most ways the first Enterprise was more hi-tech looking.
