Moki got willowed:
kinda of freaking out here Horde- just came back from physical therapy, and there was an Arab man parked in front of my house with blinkers on. He was standing in front of my house, he put a cigarette carton in my trash, and just stood there. I asked him what he wanted/if he needed help, and he said he was just smoking a cigarette. He stood there until I brought my dogs outside in front. Then he left. His license plate was covered up too. I am just this short of panicking. Late to the headline thread but wanted to point out again that Joe Biden should have had his ass whipped a number of times for the personal betrayal and falsehoods he has executed throughout his life. Clarence Thomas can be first in line.
This statement though makes me still want Bush to punch him in the throat. "I have absolutely no faith, none whatsoever, in this president to voluntarily do what should be done," he said. "The only way it is going to happen is when our Republican friends stop voting with the president and start voting to end this war by supporting our troops." His license plate was covered up too. I am just this short of panicking. Posted by: moki at April 24, 2017 09:36 AM (V+V4 --------------- That is really unsettling. I'd suggest taking the carton out of the trash with gloves to preserve prints, but maybe MPPP's idea of calling authorities is better. In any event, at least write down all identifying info you can remember about him and his car. The license plate thing is particularly disturbing. CBD, Thank you for introducing me to this artist. His technique is wonderful. Look at the way he captures the color and subtle folds of the model's dress, the skin tones in light and shade, and the detail of the background items. They all contribute to the feel of the girl, comfortable and interested, as she holds the book in a reading light.
I looked at some of Alfred Stevens' other paintings on his Wiki page and they are similarly effective. Some of them remind me a bit of Vermeer in the use of everyday poses and the incredible detail he brings to the figures and background without romanticizing. These are lovely, pleasant works that people would enjoy for themselves, not for 'deeper' meaning. The quality of Stevens' painting would make good lessons for people to copy as they learn to draw. Some identity thieves get their info by going through peoples garbage. If you live in an upscale area, that could be what's going on. Do you shred? How exactly could the White House Correspondents' dinner get out of hand?
Toxic levels of cattiness? Slap fights? Brian Williams stories? Sudden accusations of not being progressive enough? Of course, Spicer could send a minion to announce that all press passes will be revoked and re-issued, the new ones good for only 4 months out of a calendar year, and only issued once to each individual, in interest of cycling new voices through the press pool, and to allow the current crop of pros to cover real news and do real journalism. GRRRRR Martin gets a lot of criticism, and much of it is deserved, but there are two camps on his books, apparently. Those who find them tedious, because of the endless story lines, and those who sorta look at the endless story lines and say "well yeah, it's a big world. With lots of people in it."
I was more or less in the second camp. The problem is, of course, how to tie it all up, and it's not REALLY Martin's fault that it got too big for any one man to do that. I give him credit for trying something here. A big world, with lots of ugliness, and bad guys winning as often as the good guys, if not more. Turns out tv viewers don't want that. They want the good guys to win eventually. Fine. Do that. With Grrrrl power! And zombies! Boring. Posted by: BurtTC at April 24, 2017 10:37 AM (TOk1P) 212

One small example: Robb Stark's wife is still alive in the books but not the show. I just honestly don't believe that he'll finish the books. He's got at least 2 more (he's hinted that he may turn book 7 into 2 books), and people have been waiting for The Winds of Winter for, how long? Too long. He's in bad health, and he's probably just not gonna get there. I wouldn't be surprised if the larger arcs aren't the same, though, between the show and Martin's wishes. I bet the Battle of the Bastards happens in the same way in Winter as it did in the show, with the same result. It would be interesting to say the least if something that big ended differently between show and book. Posted by: TheJamesMadison at April 24, 2017 10:45 AM (mC1ZI) 239

I don't watch GoT because the nudity and violence are thrown in for "mature" storytelling that is as bland as zombies and GRRRL power. But I figure it's close to the disaster that the relaunch of Battlestar Galactica was. Not only does he have to finish the ASOIAF series but he also has to finish up the Dunk and Egg novellas, which I found pretty enjoyable. I'm not much interested in the series anymore though. Zod wanted the bad guys to win in Game of Thrones. The "good guys" are beneath contempt. The early beheading of John Stark(?) was promising only an amuse-bouche. I stopped watching with the Mrs. when it became clear that the necessary cleansing on that less-than-mediocre show was gonna take more than about three episodes. Pretty sure GRRM sopped caring, too. The last book in the series was unreadable - endless pages spent on the food and wine Tyrion was consuming, blah blah blah. Could not finish it. Nope, you can't sue the police for failure to protect.--DeShaney v. Winnebago Cty. Also see the DC Circuit's really horrifying case, Warren v. District of Columbia on the same topic. Basically, the police duty to protect is to the general society, not to a specific individual. However, if you are in custody, the police have a duty to protect you more or less. Same with medical care--no duty outside of custody--constitutional duty for those in custody. This is why gun free zones are pernicious even in private property. If people owning public venues wish to ban guns then they should accept liability if things go south. Posted by: whig at April 24, 2017 11:02 AM (AH98f) 291

Jeyne Westerling is the eldest daughter of Lord Gawen Westerling and Lady Sybell Spicer. In the television adaptation Game of Thrones her character is replaced by Talisa Maegyr of Volantis, played by Oona Chaplin.
From the Game of Thrones Wiki. Jeyne and most of her family remain at Riverrun under the protection of Ser Brynden Tully to avoid extra tension between Lord Frey and her husband.[12] Posted by: TheJamesMadison at April 24, 2017 11:03 AM (mC1ZI) 297

Not much seems to have changed - [Maxine] Waters described the riots as a rebellion, saying "If you call it a riot it sounds like it was just a bunch of crazy people who went out and did bad things for no reason. I maintain it was somewhat understandable, if not acceptable." In her view, the violence was "a spontaneous reaction to a lot of injustice." In regards to the looting of Korean-owned stores by local black residents, she said: "There were mothers who took this as an opportunity to take some milk, to take some bread, to take some shoes . . .They are not crooks." The French election results will be very interesting. Marcon has been declared a "centrist". A true "centrist" would be the declared candidate of one of the mainstream parties. Neither of the two mainstream party candidates made it past the first round.
A poll released today gives Marcon a 61% to 39% advantage over Le Pen, with two weeks to go to the election. I'm thinking a low turnout on the Left and a significant and silent move to the right. Marcon is the status quo candidate, and the French have made it quite clear that the status quo is unviable. Le Pen will win. Posted by: mrp at April 24, 2017 11:32 AM (Pqytn) 367

The French...go figure -- Spain voted Appeasement after a terrorist attack at the Madrid train stain. There might very well be another attack before the election, and from what I hear, the French have adopted the same philosophy as the Islamic mayor of London--terror is just part of living in a big city. The French...go figure ================== I think the first post-round 1 poll is interesting. For an alleged "centrist" who has been endorsed by both losing mainstream parties, Macron's 61% support sounds pretty soft to me. And Le Pen's polling number is 39%, when she received about 22% of the first round votes. She's not a "marginalized" candidate. Thirty-nine per cent may not be forty-eight per cent, but it's within striking distance of victory - at this point. Posted by: mrp at April 24, 2017 12:06 PM (Pqytn) 378
