Hey, It's Thursday, I Probably Should Write an ONT

Oh, gee, it seems to be Thursday night. And by Thursday night, I mean Thursday after 8:30. Tonight's ONT will be exactly as long as the content I am able to stuff in between now and 10 PM. This could be a bumpy ride, maybe some firemen will be able to smooth it out:

Um, yea, thanks guys. You're not helping.

Restaurant Review

This is a classic example about how to rip apart a restaurant in the most elegant possible way.

Le Cinq, Paris: restaurant review

Your Life in Numbers

This is a neat widget from the folks over at Human Progress. It allows to see how much things have changed during your lifetime (or really, since any starting point you want). For example, in my lifetime, life expectancy is up 12%, the infant survival rate is up 75% and median per-capita income has risen by 132% (adjusted for inflation and purchasing power). You can also compare your progress with other countries.

Play with the widget here

Troll of the Week

Here's one that would be in the running, except it's a parody account. It even says so if you bother to read the account description. It's fun, however, because lots of libs don't bother and wind up arguing with the troll thinking it's really Spicier.

So, close, but no cigar. No, the winner this week goes to someone called Daspri Kateri, who absolutely gutted Lena Dunham:

Shia LaBeouf

One of the most delightful things on the internet is 4chan's relentless trolling of Shia LaBeouf. Frustrated because they kept locating (and stealing) his “He Will Not Divide Us” flag, last week Shia retreated to a lonely cabin somewhere deep in the Arctic. 4chan located him within a day. At this point, I'm convinced that if Shia borrowed James Cameron's deep sea submersible and traveled to the bottom of the Marianas Trench, within half an hour a fish would swim by with “Cuck” written on its scales. (That last isn't original to me, BTW, but I lost the link to who said it. Sorry anonymous author).

Feel Good Story of the Day

Rise of the Warrior Cop

Professor Carnage. First off, be warned, the link goes to New Republic, so the author has some biases on display that are not generally shared by those of us on the right. That being said, it's an interesting read, and as a conservatarian, I do agree with a lot of it. A police state is a police state, whether it's in service of a democratic republic or a communist regime. Individual policemen and women, by and large, deserve the respect that many of us on the right naturally accord them. Our political philosophy revolves around the rule of law, and they are the ones tasked with maintaining that. Police departments, however, are government bureaucracies, and as such they are as prone as any other to gathering power to themselves. Some things are blatantly unconstitutional, like civil asset forfeiture (Hi Alex!), and others may be no than simply an institutional attitude-but if that attitude tends towards force and coercion, for example, it's going to be reflected in the street cops themselves. If we don't find a way to guide our police forces back towards the “protect and serve” model rather than the “order and enforce” one, methinks that we're going to be in a spot of trouble in the coming decades.

Related: Think You Know What “Alpha Male” Means? These Wolves Will Prove You Wrong

This is a stupid article, or at least I think so, because I utterly reject its preconceptions. The idea that “Alpha male” means “bully” is stupid. True alpha males know that that's the furthest from the truth, and the author makes a big deal about “discovering” that in the wild alpha wolves are as much nurturer and protector as warrior. Something any human alpha male could have told him, if he knew any. As a writer for the New York Times, it's entirely possible that he doesn't.

Heck of a Job, Hillary

Migrants from west Africa being ‘sold in Libyan slave markets’

Behold the fruits of leading from behind. Talk about an administration that needed some alpha males, Obama's was the textbook example. Disgusting.

Thus, an alpha male may be a major player in a successful hunt, but after the takedown of the prey, he may step away and sleep until his pack has eaten and is full.

Not out of altruism, but because of exhaustion. National Geographic had a video clip of a wolf pack taking down an immature bison. The two or three wolves who finally forced the bison to the ground were exhausted by the struggle.

This sounds like a case of anthropomorphism. Projecting the observers thinking onto the animal's behavior.

I'm guessing they get both a derailed train, and a cut water hose. I'm also guessing that they are following procedure and the union will protect them should a high speed passenger train wreck occur.

I saw a picture of a bookstore somewhere. It was nothing but books by the Kims. All their entertainment, with a few exceptions, is nothing but stories glorifying the Kims.

Sort of like what the MSM was trying to do with Barky.

he said he and his ilk want something like open borders with the norks because the differences between Korea / nork is the result of the governments.

he and is ilk believe the norks would gladly come down and work in the mexican capacity doing jobs Koreans won't do. they also believe that norks going to Korea would simply give up their weapons and or plans of attacking Korea once they got there.

so there is that.

152 I followed several links about that firehose across the tracks picture. Crazy think to get obsessed with. Unexpected, but I got interested.

Those things are apparently some real protectors to protect the firehoses from normal vehicular traffic. Cars and such, not trains, when the need arises.

Again, that was in some small town in Belgium. There weren't any scheduled trains on that track for a week or so (normal procedure is to call and stop trains when fire hoses have to be put across tracks. I didn't know this), and some jokester thought it would be funny to do that and take a picture.

It went viral.

There is actually a "fire hose bridge" for tracks, but it was for tram/trolleys back in the day when those were common in cities. It was steel and was a little ramp that just allowed the wheels to ride over the hose.

That would work with the tram cars, but a big train might be too heavy, I'd imagine to do that. But I don't know.

These guys figured out how to maximize their returns by capturing their competitors and selling them, thereby getting access to their resources, making a profit, and even appeasing those seeking slaves. you would think this is something cornell west would be bragging about when he is talking pyramids and gliders.

Ibguy, I've been praying for your sister Joyce, you and her whole support team.

My sister Lisa is going through chemo for a brain tumor, and it has been a long and difficult road. She has reached the one year mark, for which we are very thankful. She is finally seeing a councilor that she likes, and is getting massages and some supplements to help with the pain. I hope you find treatments that work for Joyce and find ways to maximize her quality of life. Please hang in there and know that many of us are lifting your family up in prayer.

He was talking about a man tearing a girl's face apart, over and over, and mom and I just looked at each other in mute horror. It wasn't until about 85-90 minutes into the story that he revealed that the girl was a cheerleader or gymnast or something whose picture was on the local phone books, and the guy's hobby was tearing phone books in half with his bare hands. Haha! Had you going for a bit there, didn't I?

205 "how are you going to explain slavery bad when you are forced to discuss
how slavery was not confined to the American south in the nineteenth
century"

I said to a 20-year-old college student who was taking an AfAm Studies course that the majority of the black Africans shipped across the Atlantic as slaves had been sent to Brazil.

He had no earthly idea that any nation other than the United States, at any time in history, had ever practiced slavery.

(This is at a highly rated public university in California.)

I then quoted the "Not angels, but Angles" line about white Britons at slave auctions in Rome. I'm not sure he had even ever *heard* of Rome as anything other than a city somewhere in Europe where his friends got drunk on spring break and fell in a decorative fountain.

Posted by: torquewrench at April 20, 2017 10:56 PM (qJjMA)

206 I've been reading Paul Johnson's "The Birth of the Modern", and in the early 19th century, the only ones who were trying to end the slave trade were white people, particularly the British. No one else gave a shit, especially the black African tribal leaders who had been profiting from the slave trade for centuries.
Posted by: rickl

Read "The Slave Trade," by Hugh Thomas. The biggest impediment the British faced to abolition of the slave trade was African chieftains. Back when the wealthiest British nobleman made #12,000/ yr. from his estates, one of them made #250,000/yr. from the slave trade, and could not understand why anyone opposed it. Particularly as it afforded him a mechanism for getting rid of the most worthless members of his tribe, and for enemies from neighboring tribes.

I was in a small tourist town last winter. The town has a police department - to reassure tourists that their cars won't be broken into if they stay at a local hotel, protect the local population, maybe discourage drug traffickers on the adjacent interstate from stopping off at the town.

I saw two of the local cops on duty - shaved heads, clearly been doing a lot of weightlifting, wearing police jump suits.

My thought was "JFC - you're a freaking small town police department. It's not Afghanistan, it really isn't."

It's a real problem.

You do know that tourist towns are quite famous for having visitors come in and act the fool while on vacation. The two guys being jacked up means that when dealing with some drunk/drugged up vacationers they will not have to resort to lethal measures to take control of situations. I'd rather have cops that a jacked up instead of affirmative action hires.

283 Question for the horde:

My parents are updating their will and estate plans. They're in their 80's - mom's health is wonky at the moment and we're trying to figure out what's going on, but my dad is in good health and seems fit to carry on for many more years. Good! But . . . they're both in their 80's.

Nothing much happens with their estate when the first parent passes on, but when the second parent dies the estate will be divided among me and my four siblings. However, one brother recently passed away so his share will go to his only child, who is currently 19. If both parents pass on before he turns 25, his share will be held in trust and he will receive 1/3 at 25, 1/2 of the remainder at 30, and the rest at 35.

Of course we don't know how much we'll each inherit because who knows if my parents will have big medical bills and assisted living expenses, etc. But, it's very possible that we'll each receive $1,000,000 or more.

So here's my question - do I tell my nephew what the estate plans are? (I'll be the executor and trustee.) Of course I wouldn't say anything right now because he's still dealing with the death of his father, but it seems to me that at some point it would be good to let him know what his expectations are.

What do you think? Will he be more responsible with the money if he's had time to get used to the idea of it?

If he is typical of those his age, he is going to need mature guidance. A lot is going to depend on how mature and thoughtful he is.

If he gets it in his head that he may never have to work for a living, that would be very bad.

346 An estate of that complexity demands...hell, requires that you get an attorney who specializes[u/] in Wills & Trusts, to set things up right, and NOW, not after folks pass away.

It all should be set up in a Revokable Living Trust, with the Estate Executor as the "First Alternate" trustee. The elders, long as they're alive, are the Primary Trustees.

In this system, all of the properties, deeds, cars & their titles, and every other fiscal asset and physical object in the estate, is transferred in form and presence, to be things OWNED BY the Trust, and managed by the Primary Trustees.

For example, a bank account would be titled The Biancancave Trust, with name, address and the rest, appearing as normal.

This way, when the end(s) come, the estate is already divided and distributed. There will be either no need for probate, or very little at worst.

Probate lawyers are the worst, and Probate Court Judges always see to it that those Probate Attorneys get much more of a share of the estate, than they should.

Sure, it'll cost about $3k to set up a somewhat complex trust. That's a drop in the bucket compared to the ass raping which is Probate Court, and mangnatudes of order less than fighting a contested will.

Chase this info down with your County's Bar Association, find that Wills & Trusts attorney, and get it going, ASAP.

352 another Julia story. Blood test came back iffy during pregnancy. So we had the amniocentesis done. We'd decided we'd have the baby no matter what, but better to know.

Well, the test came back clean, but it IDs the baby sex. I wanted to know and wife did not. So I had to keep the secret for 6 months. Just kept randomly saying HE and SHE so if I ever slipped, she would not notice.

But also had to feign interest in male baby names. At one point my wife (Filipino) suggested Anthony. And my last name is very Italian-ish Boznango.

So i'm thinking I could have a kid who looks like Bruce Lee and is named Tony Boznango. Had to put the kibosh on that one.

And you have to get people who know what the hell they're doing. And it costs a lot.

I think we've got it covered. Everything is in trusts, and there's a pile of documents related to that. It's supposed to go smoothly. And we paid a shit ton for that smoothness. I hope.

Of course I wouldn't say anything right now because he's still dealing with the death of his father, but it seems to me that at some point it would be good to let him know what his expectations are.

Ask the people to whom the money belongs what THEIR preferences are.

Thor split his mama's estate with his older brother; it was all set up ahead of time, slightly more than what y'all will be sharing, and it made me HIGHLY uncomfortable to be in any kind of discussion about it. And it was even worse when I found out I'd get Thor's part if he died first. Seems to me his nephew's should have been before me, but my MIL was adamant and seemed to think that was the way it was done.

My family never had a pot to piss in, nor a window to throw it out of, so I don't know if she was being very kind, or if that is the norm.

And some people died in the right order so that it entered that pipeline.

Granny's 2nd husbands brother (no kids) went first so money with to 2nd husband.

2nd husband went next so it all went to my Granny.

Always felt bad about that brother. Depression era kid. Incapable of spending money. 3rd grade education, worked 40 years as a janitor. Never went anywhere or did anything and amassed a half million dollars (25 years ago)

Haha, a couple things funny about that.

We've actually both talked about wanting to go to Quebec, so...that's not all that far fetched.

Secondly...I am a huge Disney fan. Huge. It's a big part of my life, but it's not something I have spoken to him about.

But, tonight on the phone, he was talking to me about what he was looking for in a lady, and he said something about how maturity was very important to him. And, he specifically said "It doesn't matter if she has childlike enthusiasm, like if 'she' enjoys Disney, as long as she is a mature adult."

Either that was incredibly coincidental, or he has been investigating my Facebook profile, which is fine. Doesn't bother me. I was just very amused when he said it, because it seemed very specific.

NO!!!! I would not say one word!
If your parents want to tell him, fine. But you shouldn't.

Knowing he may come into big money might just as easily make him LESS responsible, BTW.

Also, I don't like kids (or grandkids) expecting something, as if they are owed it or have a right to it.
It's hard not to have that attitude when you are told you are going to get this or that.

399 Let's stop with this police "serve and protect" crap. Primarily because they protect no one. They absolutely do NOT "keep us safe" and other such roles people consign on them. And the main reason for that are officers like Ofc. Isaac Newton and Ofc. Albert Einstein. Until the police master teleportation and other gifts like resurrection, the REAL value of the police is in what they DON'T get enough credit for: the investigation of crime. So long as the cops aren't getting political pressure by a mayor, or a cop with big political ambitions, nine times out of ten, they will do perfectly fine in investigations. THIS is where they earn their pay. (But I guess "To investigate and solve" isn't cutesy enough for the sides of their cars.)

And I think that the cops can treat us with the same amount of respect that they DEMAND of us. At which point they might be surprised at what happens. And at which point they will have endless support as both cops and ordinary citizens deal with the scumbags who don't respect ANYBODY.

Mama Kardashian was the one who leaked Kim's sex tape to the "right" website.

But I thought the rumor was that the tape was going to be leaked out by someone else and Mama Kardashian found a way to monetize it.

Well, I mean Europe is something I've always wanted to do. My family doesn't have too much interest in it either, so it feels like at some point, whether now or later, it will be a me trip anyway.

My cousin's boyfriend is from the UK, so she visits over there once or twice a year, when he goes back home on breaks. I'd like to see when that may be....it might be nice to have a familiar face in the area.

I thought maybe I would just do an Ireland/UK trip, easy peasy. But, considering it would be a once in a lifetime thing...maybe take 2 weeks off, and do a tour of the continent. I really want to visit Rome. And Paris. And Germany. And Prague.

We can share. All cheese is beautiful. Put runny warm Camembert on toast. Shave slivers of Manchego with your pocketknife and eat them on a hike. Fry up a roti and smear it with chutneys and slap some slabs of paneer on there. Dip tortilla chips in Velveeta and Ro-tel. Eat buffalo mozzarella on toast with bruschetta. Eat Gorgonzola on crackers. Get the deli guy to thin-slice some Jarlsberg and stack it on a sandwich. Dip bread into a fondue pot full of bubbling Fontina. Grate Gruyere on sardines and olives. Eat all the cheese. Eat all the cheese there is.

Posted by: biancaneve at April 20, 2017 11:40 PM (A/iod)

I had a property listing a couple of years ago. The land belonged to the parents of a group of 14 siblings ranging in age from 60 to 80. Several of the siblings had passed away, so their kids were the heirs to their share. It was some of the prettiest land you have ever seen. 260 acres of woods with creeks running through it. A lumber company had come in about 20 years earlier and cut a lot of the older trees, but in doing so had cut roads throughout the property, and now a lot of those trees had grown back. If I had $1.5M, I would have bought the land right then.

It was a nightmare dealing with them. They needed to have one person as the decision maker, but they didn't. The kids of the deceased siblings thought that each one of them got a full share instead of a percentage of what would have been their parent's share. It went no where. And I wasn't the first to list it. It had been on the market for 10 years when I got the listing.

I've listed a lot of Estate property and Trust properties, and most of them were easy to deal with because all I had to do was deal with a Trustee or Executor and not the heirs.

They are.

Back when I was growing up, we used to get hassled by the cops all the time, and its apparent why, men 14-25 cause most of the mischief. So, when we were out, they were letting us know not to fuck up.

We used to always joke that when the cops confiscated our beer that they took it home with them. One of my friends became a cop, and found out from them that they actually did that back before the 90's.

Now? You will see them pour it out right in front of the kids.

Nowadays, those cops would be disciplined for "profiling".

You do know that there is an entire genre of con-artists who prey upon folks they find in the "lonely-hearts" listings. Very contemptible people, they are, too. Not saying your Julien is one such, but you cannot be too careful. Do not send money or banking information; even if he wants to send a gift of money to you.

473 Aminogenesis products can be found on Amazon Beauty. They ship right to
your door and are some of the best i have found. Paranormal EFX anti
aging serum is your friend. 38 bucks but the bottle is largish for what
you pay. the night cream is called Therapeutic Facial Repair, the Day
cream is Wrinkle Arrest Anti Aging Cream with Sunscreen. There is a
cleanser called Really really clean, and it gets every speck of makeup
off and there is a HCL cleanser too< look around and you will find it
but beware it stings a little and MUST be used with the moisturizers.

there
is no bad thing i can say about any of these products except that the
day cream with sunscreen goes bad after a while so feel free to put that
stuff all over your face and neck like you know you should, and dont be
stingy.

Yes, I am well aware of the con artist schemes. I have received a number of those messages from those people. That said, I messaged him. So, I guess I'm the vulture in this circumstance. Lol. In our conversations thus far, I haven't sensed any red flags, in regards to his intentions or his religion or anything else...

I would think if he were after a trip to America, he would have expressed his undying love for me by now. Since, he hasn't, I'm guessing I'm safe.

@470

Oh crap, Disneyland Paris. Something else to add to my list. Haha. Julien actually lives in the UK, so I am not sure if Disney Paris would work.

It's hard to describe but...he's very vulnerable. He has social anxiety, and is quite introverted. He has two close friends who sort of give him company/take care of him. (One of which he says already likes me and wants to meet me, sigh) He's actually never even had a relationship before. So, I know European guys are probably a certain way, but...I think he's probably an exception to the rule. Not saying we'd hit it off or he's the One or anything.

Tickled Pink, you may not want to hear this, but you come across as very unworldly and naive. You go on these dating Web sites, and at least twice, to my knowledge, you come up with some guy who is impossibly far away. Are you afraid of intimacy, and compensate by picking some virtual guy who is far enough away to be "safe"?

Perhaps you should be asking your family and friends to help you find a real man for you. Do you go to church? Maybe there is a singles group at the church.

You sound like a nice person, and I don't want to see you hurting yourself by wasting your time and your emotions on virtual guys on the Internet.

I want you to be a happy 'ette, but it seems you are setting yourself up for heartbreak.

538 I thought maybe I would just do an Ireland/UK trip, easy peasy. But, considering it would be a once in a lifetime thing...maybe take 2 weeks off, and do a tour of the continent. I really want to visit Rome. And Paris. And Germany. And Prague.
Posted by: Tickled Pink

I'm a very experienced traveler, and recently took a trip to the UK, and have this recommendation:

For the first time ever, I tried using AirBnB to find places to stay on my trip. And I must say, it was a GAME-CHANGING excellent way to travel.

First off, staying in AirBnBs is usually much less expensive than staying in hotels. Second off, you often get to benefit from the "local wisdom" of your hosts, who sometimes give you recommendations and info you couldn't get otherwise. Thirdly (this may not apply to you, but it was extremely helpful to me) AirBnBs are sprinkled all over the place, and one often can stay is areas that otherwise have absolutely no hotels or other places to stay (this is useful when you are going to obscure areas). Fourthly, a weird detail I rarely see mentioned but it can matter: when you stay in some of the AirBnB homes, you have access to all sorts of trivial "amenities" that you can't get in a hotel -- little things like being able to use a pair of scissors or a stapler or a spare band-aid or whatever. Seems minor, but it really can help. Fifthly, many of the AirBnBs have a kitchen you can cook in, saving you mucho $$$ on restaurants; etc. etc. Sixthly -- don't count on this, but it happened to me several times -- your hosts can occasionally be VERY helpful and friendly and "take you under their wing" and drive you around to places and generally be like having a close family member in a foreign land. Doesn't happen every time (some AirBnB hosts barely say a word to you), but it happened to me maybe at 1/4 of the places I stayed.

Anyway -- AirBnB. Give it a try. I didn't think I would like it, generally being resistant to newfangled internet things, but I think I'm hooked and will henceforth be using it for ALL my trips.

Big-city people are so accustomed to daily swimming in a vast teeming sea of available potential partners that we can forget how difficult it is is small towns or rural areas to even find one other single person, much less someone compatible. So I understand your situation (at least theoretically)!

548 The orphan with the new shoes in 1946 strikes a chord and jogs a memory.

My father's outfit, the Brave Rifles (Patton's Ghost Troops), liberated the death camp at Ebensee, Austria in May, 1945.

Only teenagers were still alive, about 150 of them. The commander of the first tank to arrive told me he gave one kid a piece of bread. The boy took a bite and dropped dead on the spot. The soldiers found that ice chips and water were all the youths could tolerate, food had to be withheld until their bodies could cope with the stress of it hitting their stomachs. There are photos on the net.

If you must try a dating site, avoid anyone with no photo, anyone who is not a US Citizen, anyone who has family overseas, or has a daughter ... she's usually his wife. Read the profiles carefully, and take note of the grammar; is the writer using American English? No? Avoid this individual. This is based on the reports of a few commenter-ettes, over the last several years, who comment here occasionally.

I can attest to the fact that none of these things have helped me in any way whatsoever.

I'm in DFW, work at a large church, have gone to the gym at all different times, etc., nothing. It doesnt' help being suspicious and cynical after being deceived by the widow Cray Cray for over 4 years, but I see no one in any of these areas that so much as gives me a look.

Since I had the same problem in Michigan, maybe it's just me. Don't know anymore, and don't really care enough to figure it out.

For one, I don't care for the gym anyway. Although I have been a member of a gym before.

It just seems like people don't realize how hard it is to meet people. Joining groups, going to clubs...I've done it all. And like I said, I have asked for people to set me up to no avail.

Even online has its troubles.

There's no silver bullet, and I wish there was, because I could make a fortune selling it.

563 Maybe it is easy for some people.

My ex roommate who moved back to Kallyfornia was one. He, his wife and I would walk into a bar and he could just turn to anybody and start talking about anything. Granted he also had no filter, but nearly everybody he talked to would end up quite amused by him. Then he'd look at me after and say "see, it's easy to talk to people!" Me, I'd just be standing there cringing and looking for an open table or the exit.

I have a personal interest side to the death of diesel in passenger cars sidebar article. I worked for close to four years on a project to develop a single in-exhaust sensor to simultaneously track nitrogen oxides and carbon oxides levels in diesel. It contained multiple metal oxide sensing pads and showed some promise, but the path to developing a robust product wasn't available and it died. I was one of several inventors on a patent for the signal processing system we used, but I'll be damned if I could explain what was so special about it that warranted patent protection.

Nothing. My chief source of disdain for BOR was his too-high self-regard when it came to the question of interviewing the JEF.

He tossed up softball questions to TFG as much as anybody else, but he had the gall to criticize Bret Baier for how Bret questioned Sir Golfsalot after Baier had finally asked the Preznint some challenging questions duribg an interview. "I would have done it better," was how BOR opined. Yeah? But you didn't whenever you got the chance, sir.
