Love Of Venus And Mars
Carlo Saraceni

Carlo Saraceni (1579 – 16 June 1620) was an Italian early-Baroque painter, whose reputation as a "first-class painter of the second rank" was improved with the publication of a modern monograph in 1968.

It's Wikipedia, so it might be completely off base, but you really can't beat "first-class painter of the second rank" as damning with faint praise.

At first glance it is a fine work, but my preconceived notions made me look more carefully and find some pretty obvious flaws. I wonder whether if it had been labeled a Caravaggio or a Rubens I would have been so critical?

72 OK, there's a lot of weird in this drawing.

Those two statues in the wall seem to be leaning out to whisper to each other. There's a face in the tapestry that looks like a disapproving marm.

What on earth are all the cherubs up to, and why does only one have wings?

The only thing that does make sense is Mars' body language. "No really, I have to go. I have war stuff to do". While Venus' expression is "really? All that to get me in the sack and now you're just going to leave? Got what you wanted?".

126 Some random thoughts on Russian and Chinese relations -

China is now in a position where their economic successes may be sufficient to deter them from fostering North Korea's belligerence any further. Trump's chat with the Chinese president seems to have made it clear that it is not in their or our interest to fight one another, and that the status quo would evaporate if we were to fight one another.

Is Russia in that same place or are they willing to risk what they have by retaliating militarily, should it happen that the U.S. goes after the Norks militarily? What provocation will it take to bring them to open hostility? What factual basis is there to convince the Russians that a hot war with the U.S. is not in their economic interests?

At a time when Trump openly said it would be better to get along, if that could be possible, the Democrats continue to poison the Russian-American relationship. The Russians (and the Chinese) have always liked their proxies as a way to destabilize the U.S. But now, it may have occurred that Trump has convinced China that destabilization is not in anybody's interest. What will it take to convince Democrats (or Americans who identify as Democrats) that they are destabilizing as well?

Yeah, I know. I hate to be "that guy". Symbolism in art is a huge issue tho. Cherubs are angels. They represent godly ideals. They would never be in a painting like this. I think, however, that the influence of putti is the reason cherubs look like winged children. In the Bible, cherubs are more creature-like.

I think this guy probably was a bit light in the loafers (he seems to love painting naked guys but the woman is sort of a blob), but there's a reason for the portrayals. They usually painted for a patron, so they painted the women to look like the matron of the house, sexualized, but in a tasteful way that didn't really show it all off. Well they were sort of related, it depends on the myth. Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera, but Aphrodite was either Zeus's daughter by Dione, or she rose from the sea after Zeus, Pluto, and Poseidon cut off their dad Uranos' wang and threw it into the ocean. Note: they didn't just emasculate him, they cut him in to many little pieces and threw them all over so he wouldn't heal.

She was married to ugly Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods, to try to teach her a bit of humility and self control but she spent her days sleeping with every guy except him.

And then they had a chance to spend a weekend with Boston with some people in show business, and they ended up spending a lot of time with the girls in Bananarama. Lumley and Saunders said they were both just awestruck, those girls were the most hard core alcoholics they had ever seen, started slugging down vodka the moment they got up and didn't quit till they dropped. She said "That's it!!" and Absolutely Fabulous was born.

(there's a scene where Edina falls out of a cab backwards on her ass trying to get out of it, she said that was something she really saw happen during that weekend)

Nope -Venus/Aphrodite was actually on of the Olympian Goddesses who was not a direct descendant of Jupiter/Zeus . You will recall, particularly from the famous Botticelli painting, that she arrived, fully grown, out of the sea and is a goddess of a more ancient magic. Apparently when Kronus, the Titan, was vanquished he was cut into pieces they were thrown into the sea. The magic of that act caused the sea to churn and foam and out of the foam and waves arose the Goddess of Love herself.

Depends on their licensing agreements with the studios. The studios may not want to release a show in order to preserve some kind of audience on their own streaming service. Like the money from an agreement with Netflix wouldn't be enough for their interest.

There are a lot of free things that they could house as well, but they don't seem all that interested in silent movies.

Toyota releasing a hydrogen fuel celled semi-truck. Yes!

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr.

Posted by: The Crew of The Hindenburg at April 19, 2017 10:40 AM (FZYNt)

Since trucking is all about weight - I doubt we'll see this go much further than a proof-of-concept. I would think the tanks needed to store the hydrogen safely are going to be heavy. I have over 400 movies in my queue and only about 12 are in the Saved section (meaning the company doesn't have the discs). Some are for obvious attrition, but others may just be because they don't have them yet (Tale of Tales has never been on my active queue, for instance).

I've read some worse stories from other random people who say that almost everything their queue gets unsent, but I'm betting those queues are about 10 movies long and are all new stuff.

I don't know. Hydrogen doesn't really explode unless it's mixed with oxygen. If a leak were to catch fire, it would just be a jet of blue flame (that's true with LNG, too, by the way). Obviously you can't store the equivalent of energy value of compressed hydrogen in the same space as liquid hydrocarbon, but if a truck were making local runs and always coming back to the same garage, and the refueling was by solar electrolysis of water, it just might make economic sense.

And even if it is, it has to be at the right ratio to actually explode. Plus it's lighter than air, so H2 from a ruptured tank would be likely to dissipate before anything bad happens. Local deliveries out of a hub with H2 facilities would definitely be a good application.

*
*
Right; her name means "foam" in Greek. Since they didn't grow up together in the same Olympian house, so to speak, there wouldn't have been an "ick" factor; she wouldn't have been thought of as a sister.

Not that the Olympians would have let that stop them, if the female was good looking enough.

Women who were pale and had a bit of meat on their bones were considered attractive up until the 20th century. In an era or place when most people struggle to eat, plumpness is a status symbol (still true in India today).

As for the white skin, remember all those Southern women in Gone With the Wind taking pride in their pale skin and fretting about getting sunburned? It wasn't just the South and due to race. Peasants and menial workers got tans. Ladies preserved their pale complexions.

Much of what we consider beautiful is a reflection of our own status system. It's harder and takes more time and money to be thin and fit nowadays then it does to be fat. Tans became fashionable once most people started working indoors.

348 Women who were pale and had a bit of meat on their bones were considered attractive up until the 20th century.

Yeah, that I don't mind so much as how the women are painted as sort of unfinished clay, or an android that is vaguely human instead of the guys who are all real human being down to the scars.

163 USA Today came out with a list of the top 10 polluted cities in America. Six of them are in California. To be fair, the smog in some of those cities was around long before there was any industry. At least that's what I was told being from Redlands, CA. Still pretty ironic.

Posted by: Independent George at April 19, 2017 10:24 AM (BDZWU)

Modesto, Visalia, Fresno and Bakersfield are all in the San Joaquin Valley, which has a permanent inversion layer in the atmosphere that traps every last bit of smog. You could shut down every last factory and industry in those towns and they'd STILL have smog.

351 Amy Carlson, who plays the Commish's DIL. It's so fun to have a classmate make it big on TV, and surf the channels, see her, and say, way to go, Amy!

She does a really good job with the part, its one of my favorite roles on the show. She's concerned about her hubby and troubled by some of the stuff that happens to him but still supportive and good to him. She's got her own life, but its built around her family rather than her own self.

The show didn't hold my attention well, it was a bit too contrived and the Reagans get way too much focus; every single big case has at least 1 involved in it, which is a bit much to expect in a city that size.

358 Bruce Jenner's younger kids apparently upset about his new book, in which he claims sex with Kris Jenner was "awkward."

Jenner has always seemed like a creep to me. I saw an interview he did once where he dismissed his first wife as a nobody, just somebody he met in college. That was the wife who worked to support him while he was training for the Olympics. They had a kid together and then, after Jenner became famous, he left her for Elvis' ex-girlfriend, but came back once for a booty call. The first wife became pregnant a second time, but Jenner didn't want her to have the baby. The baby was a girl, and when she was a teenager (and Jenner was married to third wife Kris and supporting her Kardashian kids), Bruce's daughter called to ask Bruce for something, and he told her he shouldn't have to give her his money, because he'd never even wanted her to be born in the first place.

Just a vile person. Even before all his freakiness became public.

Just make it clear it's part of the job...

423 420 There are plenty of grassroots Dems who will support her and think she can win.

And yet, in this era, with this media, where Bernie Sanders is the most popular politician in the nation? She could win. At least 40% of the population will vote for the Democrat no matter who it is.

===============

Almost like most people take a major presidential election and distill it down to a binary choice.

That would be dumb, though, wouldn't it?

424 CBS gives Fauxcahontas a video tongue bath. Looks like she's in for 2020. No word yet on whether CBS has yet canceled "Madam Secretary."

New on CBS, Tomahawks Across the Potomac! Feisty brave chops her way to the White Wigwam. Starring Rachel Dolezal as Speaks With Forked Tongue.

426 I'm not sure we're lucky enough to get Elizabeth Warren as the Dem nominee.

The only way I see her winning is we have some sort of free fall like we did in 2008.

427 I mean, the Democrats blatantly cheated their own voters to put the single most unlikable, corrupt, mean, and reprehensible human being in America and she nearly won.

428 Never mind the success is purely because they went center-right and found a niche.

Attractive female newsreaders and contributors played a part, too.

But, yeah. My suggestions for success are A) do what everyone else does, but do it better, or B) do something else.

Fox chose B), an almost completely untapped market.

429 They may be coaxing her, but I'm somewhat doubtful that she'll run.

I kind of hope that she does. A woman who's so unlikable that she ran 5 points behind Obama in freaking Massachusetts? Please. Bring her on.

Good point. The hard left loves her, but the electorate as a whole? I dunno. Then again, I'm leery of underestimating the stupidity of the average voter.

Winona prefers to make love to either old Motown or Japanese grindcore. But pancake breakfasts are accompanied by either the Evolution Revolution, the Bugaloos, or the Splits themselves.

434 419 btw - slight correction on my post earlier. Venus was born out of ocean foam and waves caused by the dismembered body "parts" of Uranos being thrown into the sea by the Olympians, not Kronus - mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

I've read that in some versions, the "sea foam" is explicitly semen, but that may be interpretation or conjectural de-bowdlerization.

435 I don't know, but any news outlet that has the balls to hire O'Reilly is going to make a killing. His audience WILL follow him.

I have mixed feelings because I always thought BOR was "playing" a conservative , just in a different way than Colbert was. He used the show to sell is idiotic "Killing...." books and his "just looking out for the 'folks" schtick ware tiresome. Still, he's getting schlonged...

I don't get the impression she's liked even here. Only the true believers seem into her. Everyone else just goes along because Dem. She'd be disastrous on a national stage. So, yeah...bring it.

You mean like the absence of any actual avenue of proper sexual congress? She's not just shaved, she's without! How will she ever make her vagina costume properly if she doesn't have one to model from?
