Area Man Tells ESPN to Eff Off

Quick point before I get to the humorous content: The "prestige" media has prestige only because people confer that prestige on it. Stop conceding that prestige, and they're not prestigious any longer.

A lot of people take pics and videos and post them. The major networks then ask -- for free -- for rights to republish the photos or videos.

Most say yes, just because it's "prestigious" to have a media company use your work (for free!) so long as they give you some kind of minor credit at the bottom of the page.

Maybe people should start saying "No," or "Yes, if you pay me a lot of money, assholes."

Enter Abdul, who took this amusing photo of a guy trying to rev up the runners at the Boston Marathon:


ESPN immediately begged him to let them use his picture -- for free!, but with attribution.


With a "courtesy"? Oh man. What dicks. They really think The Commoners will just fall over themselves to make ESPN revenue, in exchange for "a courtesy."

Enter Abdul, or as I call him, the Hero of a New Media Age.


He then went on to permit other outlets to use his photo -- just not ESPN.


Then he continued letting people not called "ESPN" use it, but realized he could make demands:


Sports Center did wind up blocking him:


Obviously, this super famous scientist did not tell ESPN to fuck off out of what we'd call a political motive (though he was talking about bias, I guess).

But for whatever reason, he told the Corporate Media that he was not impressed by their prestige, he did not covet their "courtesy," and they could not have an inch of his aid.

And that's good.

They've got a nice, sympathetic story about the late Aaron Hernandez, who killed himself in prison today. He apparently teared up a couple of days ago when acquitted of murdering two people that he almost certainly did murder. His fiance and child from her were in the courtroom.

So touching. He was convicted, of course, of murdering the witness to the double murder that he was just acquitted of and was serving a life sentence without chance of parole.

Talk about the Poster Boy for Penthouse to Outhouse. Signed a 40 million dollar contract, playing for the Patriots, baby on the way, hot fiance. Then he kills two guys because one of them spilled a drink on him in a bar, and . . .

Fuck ESPN.

Well, Beisbol is on now. MLB hasn't pissed on the flag yet. Tuned in Sunday night to see Molina answering questions in Spanish (he's Puerto Rican, you see). At the conclusion the announcer said ESPN was honoring Latin players for month or some shit. Click. Done with ESPN. Done.

I'll be glad when golflady realizes all those shows she watches are 3 years old and are on Netfilx without commercials.

My daughter sent me this on Monday just a couple hours after his first tweet to ESPN telling them to eff off. I asked her who this Abdul guy was with the check mark and all. She said she had no idea; she found it on Barstool Sports.

The three of them were in agreement that they SHOULDN'T, because optics or something.


To which I say, optics? WHAT optics? Hernandez hasn't been with the team in YEARS. They've won two Super Bowls since then. He is a non-entity in terms of his connection to the team. The only thread tying them together is he WAS on the team at the time he committed murder.


They got rid of him. End of story.


So why EXACTLY would his death cause an "optics" problem for the Patriots TODAY? It wouldn't, except to ESPN, who have a particularly strong hate boner for the Boston market in general, and the Patriots in particular.

Speaking of the White House visit today, Brady didn't go (I honestly didn't think he would after all the crap he got around the Super Bowl for his support of Trump), but Gronk was there, and he crashed Sean Spicer's daily press conference. It was awesome. ^_^

What he was acquitted of was additional murder charges. He already was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. Despite his acquittal of additional murder charges, he was convicted of violating gun laws (I believe) which added an additional 5 yrs to his life w/o parole.

According to another poster, this was a trial for a different murder - he was already convicted of murdering Odin Lloyd and sentenced to life w/o parole, so even after this trial he was looking at life in prison.

181 So apparently according to Mass law, Hernandez's suicide will result in his conviction in the Odin Lloyd murder case being overturned because he hadn't used up all of his appeals. Which could potentially make it harder for Lloyd's family to sue Hernandez's estate in civil court - which for all I know might have already happened.

I have this weird blind spot, where I don't see the cities as the same, across sports. So the city of Pittsburgh, for example. In baseball season it's the Pirates, and in my youth I hated the Pirates, but they were so pathetic for so long, that I don't really care all that much about them these days.

The Stealers however, were the Steal Curtain, man! Intense, hard, brutal winners. That's Pittsburgh to me, during football season.

Somehow I don't see the city as the same for Pirates and Stealers. In my mind it's two different, distinct places.

And Boston... man, I hate the Red Sox. Hate. Even though I used to love them. And I used to hate the Patsies, but now as the anti-Goodells, I love them.

I don't generally have any concept of how New Englanders are the same folks, with both teams.

Red Sox fans are the worst in the country. Period. Worse than the Cubs, in fact, and that's saying a lot.

What he was acquitted of was additional murder charges. He already was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. Despite his acquittal of additional murder charges, he was convicted of violating gun laws (I believe) which added an additional 5 yrs to his life w/o parole.
