Stop conceding that prestige, and they're not prestigious any longer. A lot of people take pics and videos and post them. The major networks then ask -- for free -- for rights to republish the photos or videos. Most say yes, just because it's "prestigious" to have a media company use your work (for free!) so long as they give you some kind of minor credit at the bottom of the page. Maybe people should start saying "No," or "Yes, if you pay me a lot of money, assholes." Enter Abdul, who took this amusing photo of a guy trying to rev up the runners at the Boston Marathon:

ESPN blows.
They've got a nice, sympathetic story about the late Aaron Hernandez, who killed himself in prison today. He apparently teared up a couple of days ago when acquitted of murdering two people that he almost certainly did murder. His fiance and child from her were in the courtroom. So touching. He was convicted, of course, of murdering the witness to the double murder that he was just acquitted of and was serving a life sentence without chance of parole. Talk about the Poster Boy for Penthouse to Outhouse. Signed a 40 million dollar contract, playing for the Patriots, baby on the way, hot fiance. Then he kills two guys because one of them spilled a drink on him in a bar, and . . . Fuck ESPN. Posted by: Sharkman at April 19, 2017 12:51 PM (zKIA2) 22

Listening to Mike and Mike this morning (because there was NOTHING ELSE and I was desperate), we got the pleasure of listening to Mike Greenberg chatting with a couple of other people (Mike Golic not among them) about whether or not the Patriots should visit the White House today in light of the Hernandez suicide. The three of them were in agreement that they SHOULDN'T, because optics or something.
To which I say, optics? WHAT optics? Hernandez hasn't been with the team in YEARS. They've won two Super Bowls since then. He is a non-entity in terms of his connection to the team. The only thread tying them together is he WAS on the team at the time he committed murder. They got rid of him. End of story. So why EXACTLY would his death cause an "optics" problem for the Patriots TODAY? It wouldn't, except to ESPN, who have a particularly strong hate boner for the Boston market in general, and the Patriots in particular. Fricking hacks, every last one of them. Speaking of the White House visit today, Brady didn't go (I honestly didn't think he would after all the crap he got around the Super Bowl for his support of Trump), but Gronk was there, and he crashed Sean Spicer's daily press conference. It was awesome. ^_^ https://twitter.com/OnlyInBOS/status/854737877351223297 Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit & Vaginassassin, aka Beth at April 19, 2017 01:07 PM (4df7R) 104

So apparently according to Mass law, Hernandez's suicide will result in his conviction in the Odin Lloyd murder case being overturned because he hadn't used up all of his appeals. Which could potentially make it harder for Lloyd's family to sue Hernandez's estate in civil court - which for all I know might have already happened.

OT: I love this site -- www.forestry-supplers.com An interesting bit of practical knowledge of which I had never before heard -- [Tree] trunk circumference contracts daily during morning and early afternoon as storage water moves out of the trunk to the crown. In late afternoon and evening, the trunk expands as root water recharges the storage volume in the trunk. When this cycle begins to decrease in magnitude, the tree is under water stress. Seasonally, the trunk slowly forms a ring of wood. Band dendrometers can determine when and how much wood is formed. Once the yearly pattern is established, deviations from this pattern due to fertilizer, water or sickness can be determined, often before visual symptoms appear. Posted by: broseidon being a capitalist pigdog (yknow, working) at April 19, 2017 01:05 PM (oZ6kz) I have this weird blind spot, where I don't see the cities as the same, across sports. So the city of Pittsburgh, for example. In baseball season it's the Pirates, and in my youth I hated the Pirates, but they were so pathetic for so long, that I don't really care all that much about them these days. The Stealers however, were the Steal Curtain, man! Intense, hard, brutal winners. That's Pittsburgh to me, during football season. Somehow I don't see the city as the same for Pirates and Stealers. In my mind it's two different, distinct places. And Boston... man, I hate the Red Sox. Hate. Even though I used to love them. And I used to hate the Patsies, but now as the anti-Goodells, I love them. I don't generally have any concept of how New Englanders are the same folks, with both teams. Red Sox fans are the worst in the country. Period. Worse than the Cubs, in fact, and that's saying a lot. Posted by: BurtTC at April 19, 2017 01:25 PM (TOk1P) 200

That same disconnect exists in fans. For years I've heard Red Sox fans complain about the Yankees bragging about their history of championships - ancient history, they said. Well, with the Celtics potentially about to become only the 3rd #1 seed (and the 2nd real #1 seed - one of them was in the 1999 strike season) to lose in the 1st round, how are Celtics fans responding? By going 'neener neener we've got 17 rings and you don't!' Posted by: broseidon being a capitalist pigdog (yknow, working) at April 19, 2017 01:28 PM (oZ6kz) 208

[Tree] trunk circumference contracts daily during morning and early afternoon as storage water moves out of the trunk to the crown.

Lots of media ruckus over some deported "Dreamer."
Turns out the guy had a prior theft conviction. He'd been given DACA status anyway, but they're told not to leave the country or it's voided. He went home to Mexico, then illegally entered the U.S. again, and was nabbed jumping over the border fence. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at April 19, 2017 01:46 PM (riF5p) 285

Just a hunch, and I know I'm spitballing here, but maybe the guy who committed suicide after being acquitted was actually guilty? Posted by: broseidon being a capitalist pigdog (yknow, working) at April 19, 2017 01:08 PM (oZ6kz) So he gets out five years from now? What he was acquitted of was additional murder charges. He already was convicted of murder and sentenced to life without parole. Despite his acquittal of additional murder charges, he was convicted of violating gun laws (I believe) which added an additional 5 yrs to his life w/o parole. Yeah, so were his victims, wonder how much time ESPN spent on them today. And by the way, if there aren't at least a dozen people waiting to dance on my grave, my name was probably misspelled in the obituary. Posted by: Clay at April 19, 2017 02:05 PM (Qq3ZN) 307
Probably
I would love it if society started treating these people as pariahs instead of buying their bullshit that they are just offering legal representation and are part of the process. If you knowingly get a murderer free, you're an accessory as far as I'm concerned. Instead, the lawyers that beat these charges for their clients are treated like celebrities. Posted by: Maritime at April 19, 2017 01:15 PM (X7XlZ) I always find it amazing that on a board full of people who bitch about the government and media you can always find a large "law and order" contingent that thinks that, when it comes to the defense of accused, it's completely acceptable to swallow whatever case the government presents to the media. Posted by: Alex #11 at April 19, 2017 02:06 PM (ka13S) 308
@307: Yeah, this is where I gotta disagree with some of the above posts. Does it suck that money buys the best defense attorneys? Yep. Is a competent defense attorney one of the lynch pins of our system (and English Common Law, natch). Yep.
This specific one got Casey Anthony off, IMHO, because the state overreached with murder one instead of a lesser charge that would have been easier and more believable to swallow. Posted by: GeoSTI at April 19, 2017 02:13 PM (w1GWh) 309

Got a book from Vietnam war days, cannot remember what book, when a US grunt (after a massive firefight) was asked if he wanted to talk to the news crew who had dropped in after the fight. I am paraphrasing but he said something like this to them. " You can piss off, you people from the electronic media don't impress me none." I have always carried that in my head. Fuck the media.
