Sports "Journalist:" The American Flag Is "Political" And We Must Keep Politics Out of Sports By Not Showing the Flag

Professional jocksniffers are the worst jocksniffers.

I believe the statement he made is intended to be sarcastic/ironic. I think he's whining about people telling him "Keep politics out of sport," so now he's trying to mock those people by claiming the simple display of the American flag is "political."

Which is stupid. The flag has some political character, but it's anodyne and vague -- I wouldn't tell a sportscaster to keep his politics out of sports if he said something anodyne and vague like "We all would like to see all races advance" or that kind of thing.

That's not the sort of politics-in-sports people object to, of course. And nor should this twit (spelling error?) take issue with the flag.

But here's the latest bitchy buttercup, getting all buttery and cuppish.

This is how crazy 2017 has become. The American flag is now, according to one NBC Sports baseball writer, a political statement.

Delicate NBC snowflake Craig Calcaterra was triggered Sunday when a giant American flag covered the field at an Atlanta Braves game, with Old Glory gracing the Jumbotrons, and a stirring military flyover to cap it all.

"Will you keep politics out of sports, please. We like sports to be politics-free," Calcaterra tweeted.

Now when people tweeted back to him about hixr tizzy, he defended his claim, and made it sound like he was serious (and not just engaging in childish mocking) about the flag being political.

But I think this was just post hoc reasoning. I still think he was just being a little bitch in his first tweet:

"People often wrap themselves in the flag in order to achieve political ends ... Maybe a flag, in and of itself isn't always political. A two-acre flag with a military flyover is saying something very specific, however," Calcaterra tweeted.

@PastorKrahn tweeted, "@craigcalcaterra I think there was a time when love for country wasn't considered political. And a lot of people would like to return to that time."

Craig responded, "@PastorKrahn Getting there requires people to accept that those who question our leaders and do not support all military ventures can still be patriots."

So... he's admitting he has to "get" to that place of loving his country only after people "accept that those who question our leaders and do not still support all military ventures can still be patriots"?

By the way: Where was Calcaterra during Obama's endless Drone Strikes for Peace, or when Obama was presiding over the largest loss of American life in Afghanistan?

Was dissent the highest form of patriotism then? Or has it only regained its position as the highest form of patriotism since sometime between November 8, 2016 and January 9, 2017?

I also don't think he reads the newspapers much -- in the Republican Party, for example, there is a real debate over the Syria strike. There are also those in the Democrat Party praising it.

So opinions vary on this -- and there is no strong effort that I have seen to brand people who disagree as "not patriots" or whatever. The debate I'm seeing seems to be on the principles of the thing, and has not (yet) degenerated into simple attacks on an opponent's morality, character, and patriotism.

By the way, this bitchy buttercup did in fact confirm my hunch that he was attempting to "troll the stick-to-sports crowd" (that is, the people who say that when they pay to watch sports on ESPN, or make themselves available as passive advertising recipients for ESPN and the other networks, they want the their side of the bargain (the sports), not further advertising (the politics).

And also by the way, if you guessed this guy probably looked like Rick Wilson's younger, even sadder brother, you are an astute observer of the physical-psychological interplay in human development.

http://gcaptain.com/banned-sea-venezuelas-crude-stained-oil-tankers/

The gist of this is the tankers get stained with crude at the export terminals because of pipeline leaks, then have to be cleaned by hand. There is no money to fix the terminals, the delays in sailings cost money that doesn't exist, everything is breaking down and apart, collapsing.

83 At one point that rocket surgeon claimed that those huge flags and the flyovers only started up post 9/11 which is rather news to me.

The thing is that it's not worth the bother arguing with him. He's not actually trying to have a conversation about what constitutes politics in sports and what obligation inurs to those on the Right who say leave politics out of sports to comprehend that those on the Left view the singing of the National Anthem and huge flags and the like as political and what responsibility flows to those on both sides to say hey this is the public sphere and both sides get to have a say in it.

90 I believe the statement he made is intended to be sarcastic/ironic. I think he's whining about people telling him "Keep politics out of sport," so now he's trying to mock those people by claiming the simple display of the American flag is "political."

LOL. So ... any mention of the country, as a country is "political". All major leagues (American, National, etc.) hardest hit.

I guess this guy thinks the Olympics, Pan-Am games, World Championships ... are all verboten, too ... being "political". Actually, that part I wouldn't be sad to see go as those games are less about actual competition in sports than competition among countries.

Anyway, I can't see this mental midget being able to broadcast any sports, given his issues with the idea of a country even mentioned being off-limits. He has already volunteered to host the Abortion Games, though.

172 If refusing to salute the flag, taking a knee instead, is a political statement, then displaying the flag in a patriotic manner is also political.

The fact is that there are some kinds of political statements, like a declaration of love for one's country, are acceptable in polite company. It is the default. Almost to a person, if you ask an American, "Do you love your country?", they will proudly say "Yes!". For those who want to put out a political statement that America should not be loved, they need to choose their forum more carefully. It is acceptable in the university quad. It is not acceptable at a sporting event, unless those running the event want to lose their customers.

I thought, wrongly, he was of the right, but commenters told me was consistently a churlish lefty.

Anyway, so I did add that to my mental dossier on him, and I believe commenters (who would know much more about it than me).

191 Someone on the radio this morning was bemoaning the Millennials plight and what implications it has for us.

His main point was that this generation, up to early 30s or so, has pretty much grown up only hearing one side of the issues. This tends to warp thinking and robs them of an important counter when it comes to looking at, er, extreme positions. In other words, the capacity to self-moderate is lacking in that generation. So hence we're seeing really far out crap being taken as mainstream by the Left...since their logic chains usually lead them there absent any moderation or other perspectives.

So this guy has been marinating in the left's fever-swamp for a long time, which has the effect of robbing him of the ability to even think through these kinds of things. To the extent he can, he's only able to apply clumsy moral equivalencies to the issues, instead of actually thinking through the differences. Ergo, a flag = partisan politics.

TLDR - he's an idiot.

Calcaterra is a lawyer by trade. He had his own little baseball blog, ShysterBall. It was fairly popular as a lighthearted fan take that also incorporated a fair bit of sabermetrics while they were first becoming prominent. He then was picked up by a bigger group blog, The Hardball Times. At this point, aside from bitching about the Indians name/mascot and supposed racist stereotypes of Latin players as "lazy", he didn't inject politics much.

Once he was hired by NBC, he started going into prog overdrive. This was near the beginning of the Obama administration, which he frequently slobbered over. At that point, I stopped reading.

Please, respect our right to complain about political acts, so that we can have a constructive dialogue about public policy and baseball. The crisis affecting our nation deserves this. I would keep my "opera whore" makeup on after a show to go to frat parties, since I was a little sister of one of them. I figured it was a nice blending of the two...

247 Classical concerts are more powerful and engaging than people give them credit for, but it does have to be the right kind of piece. thanks but that's not it. Originally, yeah, a certain type of mind was attracted to this site. However, at some point you realize that commenters do half of the work for you (or more, on bad days), and that it's the commenters themselves writing most of the blog (blog plus comments).

At that point it's a self-sustaining thing -- commenters come here to see the other commenters, and the only way I can lose them is if I do something catastrophically stupid and drive most of them away. If I just lose a few, that's too bad, but it's not enough to drive away most commenters (and many readers).

A lot of times I just put up crap posts because 1, I'm lazy, and 2, it's obligatory shit I don't care about but must link, and 3, it's hard to have an opinion on everything, but a lot of it is 4, I'm kind of just expecting the commenters will make their own conversation and content whatever I write so it really doesn't matter that much if I write something good or not.

And seriously, after 11 years, I'm kind of all out of original observations and jokes. Even the stuff I've repeated to death I just don't feel like repeating any further. I can't keep making the observation that politics has become the religion of the godless. It's still true, but I can't say it for the 100th time.

I had a sister who was 'borderline' everything. But she made a lot of friends who were also 'borderline' everything. One friend in particular had a husband who had instantaneous 'will call' ticket availability at any Philly sporting event. Said secret was passed to me for reasons unknown.

I found the sports only mildly entertaining. But the young women who watched as I whispered the super secret formula to get into any sporting event showed their appreciation in many ways that Peter North would nod approvingly at.

Heh. Heathens, the lot of you! I am very, VERY lucky that I found a blue collar guy that loves Opera and classical music. HAve been to both together a few times. For Valentines Day this year, the movie part of dinner and a movie was a musical, and it was his idea to watch it! Yet he can build a house from the ground up and diagnose what is wrong with a car just by hearing it. My own version of Mike Rowe, were Mike Rowe six inches shorter than me and balding.

Posted by: LizLem at April 18, 2017 02:17 PM (hvf9s)

278 I don;t like Opera. When you can't understand the words, its less annoying, but if you can, its almost always the worst kind of crappy soap opera stupidity. Seriously, its like a 2 page story that takes 2 hours to tell because of all the music. And the songs are mostly:

I love her
I love her
How I love her
How will I tell her that I love her?

I love her, I love her, I love her, I love her

(repeat first verse 2 times)

(repeat chorus 15 times)

Its even worse than most "worship music" at churches.

There are exceptions. Gilbert and Sullivan are quite clever and fun. But mostly its crap and I am not fond of operatic singing. Something i noticed a while back is that a lot of the really big singers, the huge stars..... are off key often. Not by a lot, just enough.

I don't mind individual songs from Operas, but the whole thing is like a cupcake wrapped in bacon, deep fried, and served in a bathtub of sugar. A little is okay, but this is just too much and awful to begin with.

Posted by: Vashta Nerada at April 18, 2017 02:17 PM (7ZVPa)

I actually wound up in a production of Steel Magnolias - an all-female play - for a girl. I went with her to her audition for the show, and at one point the director said "We need a dog barking here." So I volunteered to bark, and she cast me as the voice of the dog. The girl I went to the audition with didn't get any role.

303 And seriously, after 11 years, I'm kind of all out of original observations and jokes. Even the stuff I've repeated to death I just don't feel like repeating any further. I can't blame you. The desire to not repeat an observation for the billionth time frequently keeps me quiet in threads, because really, how many times can you point out the same fact that explains many of the follies of what's left of our culture without sounding like a broken record?

So I branched out into limericks and one-liners. Which may have improved my comment quality.

League Rules are debated, players are debated, my attitude is debated.

...and I can lose people.

If it weren't for the League Members, we'd have no competition. If it weren't for my posts, we'd have a boring League.

Shit gets old and you can only say the same things for maybe seven years before you're out into The Wild Blue Yonder.

Thank God!

307 thanks but that's not it. Originally, yeah, a certain type of mind was attracted to this site. However, at some point you realize that commenters do half of the work for you (or more, on bad days), and that it's the commenters themselves writing most of the blog (blog plus comments).

Sure, I get that. After 10 years on my blog I really just don't give a crap any more. You burn out after a while, especially if you post too often. And yeah I know you will throw something against the wall realizing the commenters will run with it and make it something.

But the group you gathered here is because of your writing. Without your writing and humor (you still have it, you just don't feel it like you used to)... the commenters wouldn't be like this. You pulled us in and we stay because of the community.

And you still belt out a home run a couple times a week even when you're burnt out and not feeling it.

389 The fact is that there are some kinds of political statements, like a declaration of love for one's country, are acceptable in polite company.

If people are given the resources to learn and either continue to speak hate speech or refuse to adapt their beliefs as manifest by an intemperate display of a flag, then hostility may be warranted. If people continue to support racist politicians or pay for speakers that prop up speech that will lead to the harm of others, then it is critical to take the appropriate measures to hold them accountable for their actions.

It is important to note that our preference for education over beration regards baseball fans who may be ignorant NASCAR yobs who have not been given the chance to learn. Rather, we are not referring to those who have already had the incentive to learn and should have taken the opportunities to do so. Paid professional lecturers, politicians and baseball players are among those who should know better.

So fuck you.

469 I remember how I got here. I had been a daily commenter at Lucianne ever since the site started. Then in the run up to the 2012 Presidential election, the site turned on anyone who was not fervently and completely in Romney's camp. Long time posters were banned for simply saying they did not think Romney could win or even lesser sins. So I got to this site since I hated the way Lucianne's site was going. I haven't been back there since.

The tone surrounding the current discourse is becoming increasingly hostile. NBC sports is an institution whose aim is to educate. baseball fans who watch NBC comehail from a variety of diverse backgrounds. With this diversity comes previously-held biases that are in part the products of home environments. NBC sports forces us to both recognize and grow from these beliefs, as is the mark of a good baseball game. However, as sports fans, it is important to recognize that this process does not occur without bumps along the way. It is inevitable that there will be moments in this growth process where mistakes will happen and controversial statements will be said. However, we argue that these questionable claims should be mitigated by education as opposed to personal attacks.

On a televised NHL game I saw a guy get a skate in the face, 78 or so stitches and came back the next period and played the rest of the game. They use the little stitches if its in the face apparently. They don't miss a shift for a tooth. happened the other night.

That's why hockey is the best professional sport. That and the fact that the team coming from behind pulls the goalie for an extra man making exiting down to the last second. It may even be as exciting as running out the clock in football or fouling your way from two points down to ten in basketball. Blecchh.

I never really thought about that until I had a girlfriend who had er, a large bosom and found out that she'd recently had breast reduction surgery because they were hurting her back and literally got in the way while playing the piano. I saw before pics and she looked like she was smuggling hippo babies.

Lot of weight on the chest to hold up, especially for a little thing just over 5'. She used to put her feet on top of mine at restaurants because they wouldn't reach the floor. Too bad her soul and heart wasn't as cute as her exterior :/

582 The War of 1812 had very justifiable reasons. The British were openly preying on American ships, kidnapping Americans to fill their watch list, and basically treating us like trash to be used at will. They'd fire a cannon at a US merchant vessel and just take whoever they wanted.

I know, the British were fighting a world war of survival against basically the entirety of Europe, they needed sailors badly and because the life of a regular sailor on a man-o-war was hellish, they'd escape to the USA whenever possible. But they weren't very picky about who was a "deserter" and would always claim the people volunteered.

People go to war over that kind of thing.

It is extremely unlikely that Britain would have even wanted to try to re-incorporate the United States into British North America (with the exception of some border adjustments, access to St Lawrence R., etc.)

What did become at stake as a result of our military incompetence were the lands of the Louisiana Purchase. Loss of the war would have likely resulted in its reversion to Spanish control. Britain and its allies did not recognize the transfer to France (under occupational duress) and the subsequent sale to the U.S.

611 From the OP article: "For one, if we removed everything that offends leftists in the public square, it would be a bland, barren scene."

No, I disagree. There would be the same stuff that started up in Barry's first term: Old recycled Soviet style propaganda crap like marches during half time celebrating the great leap forward in healthcare and peace in our time with Cuba. Leftists are never satisfied with simply the removal of things that offend them. Everything that does not promote their social and political activist goals are acively offensive.

613 The merchants of New England were being slaughtered by the blockades during the War of 1812, so yeah they hated it. but the business owners weren't the ones being "impressed" by the British either, so they didn't really give a crap about the fate of a few sailors. The English didn't want the war, either, but they had to respond. They couldn't have America siding with the French, and it gave them the perfect excuse to block American supply ships to France, which they'd had to let go through before.

Mostly the British people felt the American sailors were being wronged, and weren't real supportive of the war.

614 True. Sometimes someone will put up a great post

that it would spin out of control very quickly, like participation

Yes they are! What happened to them? Did they suddenly decide to not make them anymore? I'm short, so if I need a formal dress, tea length does just fine. Otherwise if I have to get a regular long dress, it's alteration time. More money.

638 Here's what The Horde is good at, however.

We will "miss" Condolences and Prayer Requests, at times, but we always "catch-up".

I've got thirty Prayer Requests written down. Ten of them I received from Fenelon, who "updated me" on them.

Blessed be the horde, as we love and live. Our prayers echo throughout this sanctum for those we love.

And sometimes it's not even the thing you try to be clever with that has the staying power. Witness the Face-Sized Spider, the death of buzzion, etc.

I mean, I try to be profound and intelligent, and what was my lasting impact? A moment of despair after MisElection 2012 when I pronounced: "Let it burn..."

Just roll with it.
