Luncheon On The Grass
Edouard Manet

This is a big one; 6.5'x8.5', and I have no idea what else to say that is even remotely perceptive, other than, "Huh?"

It's a weird painting.

Just in case you think I am a loon for noticing stark color differences, look at this version.

Never cared for Manet that much. His color choices aren't anything special and his subject matter leaves me indifferent.

103 For those that like "art" films you might enjoy "Cezanne et moi" which is a film about the supposed relationship between Cezanne and the writer Emil Zola. Quite a few nude women in that and the countryside of the south of France is lovely. The acting is great-even if it has French subtitles, but I found it a rather depressing film because of the relationships between a number of the people. However, if you stay to the end the credits are superimposed over pictures by Cezanne which is nice.

I'm curious as to how much he liked women. Really, look at his paintings, even this one. The women he paints, their faces are often grotesque. Off somehow, including the pretty ones! And the ones who are fully clothed.

The distortion of their faces suggests he's been scarred by his experience with women. What we see is not so much THEIR faces, but how he sees them, and that to me says a great deal about him.

Sure is mellow grazin' in the grass
(Grazin' in the grass is a yes, baby, can you dig it)
What a trip just watchin' as the world goes past
(Grazin' in the grass is a yes, baby, can you dig it)
There are so many groovy things to see while grazin' in the grass
(Grazin' in the grass is a yes, baby, can you dig it)
Flowers with colours bright, makin', everything outta sight
(Grazin' in the grass is a yes, baby, can you dig it)

The sun beamin' out between the leaves
(Grazin' in the grass is a yes, baby, can you dig it)
And the birds dartin' in and out of the trees
(Grazin' in the grass is a yes, baby, can you dig it)

Everything here is so clear, you can see it
And everything here is so real, you can feel it
And it's real, so real, so real, so real, so real, so real
Can you dig it?

I can dig it, he can dig it, she can dig it,
We can dig it, they can dig it, you can dig it
Oh, let's dig it. Can you dig it, baby?
I can dig it, he can dig it, she can dig it
We can dig it, they can dig it, you can dig it
Oh, let's dig it, can you dig it, baby?

Mustbequantum, how is your baby granddaughter? Posted by: bluebell at April 18, 2017 10:17 AM (sBOL1)
=====

At home now. She seems to be doing very well and her size has helped her cope (9-12oz). I can't hold or get near her because I am a coughing snotty mess (bad cold/allergies). So I got to play with son's new puppy. My old dog was really funny restraining the puppy's more enthusiastic attempts at the toddler staying with me over the ICU days. He just quietly herded her away when she got too bitey. Son's baby is due in August. I like toddlers, babies are too scarey for me.

there are specific linguistic terms for this sort of thing:

The use and conjugation of a noun to make it serve as a verb is called "Verbalizing"
The opposite, turning a verb into a noun, is called "Nominating"

These are very useful terms, and very indicative of the plasticity of they human brain in its unknowable processing of information.

252 Frankie Hollywood is causing talk of a schism in the Catholic Church. No wonder. I'm not Catholic and he bugs the hell out of me.

Conservative opposition to Pope Francis spurs talk of a schism in the Catholic Church

As Francis enters his fourth year in office, his conservative opponents have chosen to stand and fight over his 2016 apostolic exhortation titled "Amoris Laetitia," or "The Joy of Love," in which he suggested bishops can use discretion in granting Communion to Catholics who divorce, then remarry in a civil ceremony.

Francis' guidance was seen by many as contradicting the ruling, which dates to the early days of the Roman Catholic Church, that couples are living in sin if they remarry, because their first marriage is still valid in the eyes of the church.

Francis' opening was part of his mercy-before-doctrine drive, which welcomes outcasts to the church rather than use dogma to keep people out. But for conservative Catholics, it was another reason to feel aggrieved, after Francis appeared to suggest in 2015 that Lutherans could receive Catholic Communion, and, when asked about gay people in 2013, said, "Who am I to judge?"

Needed more t & a. Needed more shocking of male test subjects while flirting with cute girl. Needed less key master. Needed more "put it in me" dialog. Who did they make this movie for?

The actor who played the villain was more interesting. The actor's dad was an amazing man in a human sense. Everyone who knew his dad said to know-him-was-to-love-him. The actor not-so-much. The actor passed away before the movie was released. The actor performed one final spiteful act after his death toward his half sister. Having a famous father who is beyond a decent human being and in the saint territory must be a curse.

300 As Francis enters his fourth year in office, his conservative opponents have chosen to stand and fight over his 2016 apostolic exhortation titled "Amoris Laetitia," or "The Joy of Love," in which he suggested bishops can use discretion in granting Communion to Catholics who divorce, then remarry in a civil ceremony.

Ann Barnhart is intense, depressing as hell and well-nigh apocalyptic. Here, she writes why the title of Amoris Laetitia is a deliberate poke in the eye by Frankie Fabulous and his gay mafia to the faithful:

In printing industry, images are delineated as width x depth as in 8.5x11. Similarly, images can be portrait mode, as 8.5x11 or landscape mode 11x8.5.

Today's painting seems to be a landscape yet your measurements indicate a portrait mode.

Is the "artistic" convention different by custom or habit ???

I don't follow the gossip press, but I would suggest this:

If a big star like Johnny Depp is accused of beating up a woman, and it's later reported in the gossip press that she's a psycho who beat herself up, and tried to make it look like Johnny Depp did it... I would think there's a fairly high likelihood Johnny Depp beat her up, and the Hollowwood Industrial Complex went to work protecting one of its biggest stars.

416 The trees are, as individual portraits, well drawn, but the artist has failed o unify them into a distinct picture.

This painting is fairly typical Manet: a lot of individual insight, but a certain, probably stylistically intentional failure to unify foreground and background, resulting in an awkward telephoto like portraiture wherein every thing is either in tight sharp focus, or none at all, that emphasizes individual elements.

Posted by: jwpaine at April 18, 2017 01:05 PM (30dDt)

428 It's a statement on the lie of romantic love foisted onto humans for all history.

There are only two subjects in the painting, not four - one man and one woman. They're in a wilderness alone, having connected briefly but without consequence.

The man is conversant with himself, engaged in internal dialogue, picturing himself fancier than he is having notched another conquest. He imagines himself fully clothed or more, not at all vulnerable, having offered only inconsequential, algorithmic banter to achieve his selfish ends. He leans on his hand without touching this woman with whom he is done and ignores here completely.

The woman is also elsewhere in her mind, imagining the responsibilities she ought have pursued in lieu of this fleeting shame pursuing the lie. She offered herself fully but he did not reciprocate. So foolishly hopeful but she should have known better, there was nothing chivalrous about it, they did not even find a soft patch of ground, there are rocks everywhere and no blanket spread. She is now out of place and longs awkwardly for eye contact with the viewer who might embrace her more genuinely than this now-disengaged acquaintance.

The spilled basket of uneaten food represents the failed hopes and dreams of both. A want, perhaps even an expectation, collapsed.

The boat awaits their return. It will be a quiet and uncomfortable row back to rejoin the other shades who they pass in life, who like our subjects find no more than brief, vulgar intimacies punctuating existences of detachment and loneliness.

Indeed, indeed... *lights another crack rock and continues to scrub Bernie shirt on washboard*

429 I have no idea why this painting reminded me of one that I saw at the Prado nearly 20 years ago, which has haunted me since. I am not an art person. We were in Spain on business and my companion insisted on some sight seeing. We planned an hour or two at the Prado and spent the entire day there. The painting that haunted me was the Infernal Hunt.

430 This is the painting that got Manet in trouble because the men are fully clothed and the women naked. That meant that hanky-panky was going on. If they were all clothed or all naked it would have been no problem according the mores of the day.

431 "Ghostbusters, it was 1984, the best year of the Republic since the end of WWII. "

Good:
Probably close to peak MTV.
Eurythmics, Cars, Elvis Costello still making classics.
Unfortunately Blondie on the wane.
Trent Reznor spending months in my basement doing overdubs on a 4-track TEAC with his first band.

Bad:
Only having enough money to afford two reels of tape so all songs got dumped to cassette and forever lost. Can't count the times I have turned over the basement looking for the "Ninch Inch Nails basement tapes"
