Quotes of The Day

The ultimate collection of manly last words.

Mutt and Jeff On the unity tour. Wonder if there will be T-Shirts.

Perez and Sanders start their national speaking tour together on Monday. The "unity tour" is set to target all 50 states, and the two will speak out against Trump's agenda. The tour is designed to help unite two wings of the Democratic party, with Perez representing the so-called establishment wing of the party and Sanders representing the more liberal wing.

Back in February, Perez became the chairman of the DNC after beating Rep. Keith Ellison (D., Minn.), who Sanders endorsed for DNC chair.

Mark Steyn 2007 and now in 2017, Who lost Turkey?

Well, the truth is I published it exactly ten years ago, to the day of Erdoğan's referendum. From the April 16th 2007 edition of National Review, "De-Boning Turkey":

The modern secular Muslim state – a country that gave women the vote before Britain did and was Israel's best friend in an otherwise hostile region – certainly, that Turkey seems to be being de-boned by the hour: it now has an Islamist government whose Prime Minister has canceled trade deals with Israel, denounced the Iraqi elections, and frosted out the US Ambassador because he was Jewish; a new edition of Mein Kampf is prominently displayed at the airport bookstore. In other words, the Zionist Entity's best pal is starting to look like just another cookie-cutter death-to-the-Great-Satan stan-of-the-month.

What's going on this weekend? How about building your very own 9mm carbine pistol? File this under your science topic for the evening.

OK, moar science. Wonder if CDR-M used this fellow to fix his PC problem.

I wouldn't recommend forwarding this link to your employer. How the 6 hour workday saves money.

In February, after almost two years worth of six-hour workdays, nurses at the Svartedalens elderly care facility in Gothenburg, Sweden went back to eight hour shifts—despite recently published research showing the benefits of the shortened workdays.

A Genius Award goes out to the following:

Our 2nd entry this evening Fuck It, (I Don't Want You Back)'

April 18, 2004, R&B singer from New York Eamon started a four week run at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Fuck It, (I Don't Want You Back)' his debut single. The song earned a listing on the Guinness World Record for "the most expletives in a No.1 song", with 33. via thisdayinmusic.com

The War of Poverty or Wal-Mart, Which one has helped the poor the most?

If budget-cutters in Washington decided to eliminate food-stamp benefits to New Yorkers, the city’s politicians would be denouncing the cruelty of the “Republican war on the poor.” Yet Mayor Bill De Blasio and the city council are already inflicting the same sort of pain on low-income New Yorkers by denying them access to one of the nation’s most effective anti-poverty programs: Walmart.

Academia is our enemy we should help it commit suicide.

If Animal House were to be rebooted today, Bluto – who would probably be updated into a differently–abled trans being of heft – might ask, “See if you can guess what am I now?” before expelling a whole mass of pus-like root vegetable on the WASPrivileged villains and announcing, “I’m a university – get it?”

68 Rant -

After much dread and procrastination I finally did our taxes. Went smoother than expected. Wasn't sure I had put all the papers I needed in the same place but luckily I had so no searching. Only took 2 hours. My best guess was that we were pretty close to even with the Feds and a refund from the state. Ended up not owing either and getting refunds that
should be just enough to pass it on through to the city/county/school district for our property taxes. B@$t@rds.

I sure don't feel like I'm getting my money's worth from any of them.

Add up all the income/property/SS/UI/Medicare/sales taxes/fees/surcharges/permits and it is 50%.

For that kind of change I want them to go away and leave me the hell alone, but noooo, they want to stay up your @ss and see if they can find a way to fine you for some infraction on top of all that.

Rant off.

Thank you Mis Hum. Gonna go read all the juicy content and unwind.

Doin' okay, chavez, thanks for asking.

Had to drive up to DFW this morning to drop my daughter off. She flew to LAX for a few days of R&R with the bf.

Gotta pick her up Friday afternoon.

The only part of the drive there I really dislike is the damn road construction that happens at o'dark thirty, not moving for an hour.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56ibwiNRZiU

And it was also the last launch called by NASA announcer George Diller. He's retiring after 37 years. If you've watched a space shuttle launch, chances are you heard him call out the countdown.

Here's the post-launch press conference. Several of the participants paid tribute to him and wished him well in his retirement.

Diller seemed to be popular and well-regarded among the spaceflight community. It's sort of like hearing a beloved sports announcer call his last game.

This state's due date is May 1 and we are owed about $500.00 from them, so it's good, I guess. Really tired of how complicated all this crap has become. I used to be able to wrangle both sides of the collectors' equations so that we'd write a check for under $100.00 to each.

2. Will anyone other than neocon shills like (((Paul Wolfowitz))) dare defend these as shining examples for the Mideast to emulate?

In other news, the in-laws are moving into "Pennsylvania's premier continuing care retirement community" this week. The whole process began with the hospitalization of my FiL about six weeks ago for mobility problems that led to broken bones.

Let's just say that during the ensuing days folks' actions have caused me to lose respect for many of my in-laws. My own opinion -- which I have kept to myself -- is that many members are treating the FiL disrespectfully because of his current infirmities by engaging in willful disregarding of his wishes regarding what gets moved into the new place.

Animal House was already rebooted 20 years ago. It was called P.C.U. Jeremy Piven was Bluto/Otter. David Spade played Neidermeyer/the other WASP guy.

They didn't have any transvestites or transsexuals in it. They had lots of lesbians constantly calling for the end of male domination.

It was kind of funny.

BTW, I would point out that in Animal House the deltas were really a bunch of losers. And it was funny that the head of the deltas was a guy who could have just as easily been in the WASP frat. He was good looking, dressed spiffy and had a sports car, in direct opposition to every single other delta. Just sayin' ...

Assad helped launch "the resistance" in Iraq by giving foreign jihadis passage and equipment during the Iraq war.

Turkey has been a supporter of ISIS off an on.

4. At office birthday parties, BOR always takes the biggest slice of pizza, but never pays his fair share of the bill

3. Once hazed the Murdochs by stealing several pairs of Megyn Kelly's skidmarked panties and draping them all over every lamp in the Executive Offices

2. FNC execs are beyond sick of Bill, upon entering any meeting, *always* doing his Dick Van Dyke 'tripping on the ottoman' gag

296 Report: FBI Cited Phony Trump Dossier to Obtain FISA Warrant to Monitor Carter Page
FBI Director James Comey has cited the dossier in some of his briefings with lawmakers in recent weeks as one of the information sources used by his bureau to bolster its probe, U.S. officials briefed on the investigation told CNN.

The secret court that oversees the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) granted the FBI a warrant to monitor the communications of Page, a former national security adviser on Trump's campaign.

Whatever else you may think of Buzzfeed, they were right in publishing that POS dossier. The fact that it was public denied the Dems and the media to lie by innuendo about its contents. Anyone could just look at the lame thing themselves.

And it wasn't just used to smear Trump. They actually used it to obtain a warrant to spy on an American.

No, the "west" hasn't killed "millions" in the war on terror. A few western countries, and a few non-western countries, have killed a small fraction of that - almost all of them people very much in need of being killed. The terrorists themselves, and assorted enablers and opportunistic allies, have killed significantly more people, almost all of them innocents.

So - not too bad. Just a pristinely factually incorrect and morally inverted premise. Standard procedure these days.

372 Are there enough people around that I could have someone critique a response I am considering sending to a student?

This student missed class today (valid reason) and couldn't turn in her homework on time. I accept homework submitted electronically. The student says that the college should not have that rule because it is not fair for students like herself who don't have a scanner.

Here is my response:
does your phone (or camera or other device) take pictures that you can send via email? You don't have to use a scanner.

The rule is mine, that homework must be handed in on time for full credit. This is a very common course requirement in college. Accepting homework via electronic means is a special accommodation I make in case it helps a student in circumstances that make it difficult to turn in their work on time.

I'm concerned about tone. This student tends to be anxious and sensitive. Also, it's good if I don't get negative instructor reviews. What do the writers and people with high emotional intelligence here at the HQ think?

380 Thanks, Miley. Yes; I see how "requirement" might be a problem.

I think she wants college to be as accommodating as the high/middle schools are for her kids. There's s lot of bending over backwards to keep parents happy.

One year, the school district thought they might require middle school students who didn't pass their core classes to attend summer school in order to progress to high school. That didn't stand.

And we have a fairly good school district, except for the sexting issues.

Your answer should be, "Tough titties. Dem's the rules."

I'm not kidding. I taught at various universities for years and have run into all manner of student, excuse and complaint. The fact is that it's not your problem and you aren't required to address her stupid complaint. Let her figure it all out on her own.

I used to give many take-home tests (so that the students would be able to do them in a stress-free environment) and was very lax with accepting work. You know what? The more lax and easy-going I was the more the students thought it their right to take advantage and push my few boundaries. The more bullshit excuses I got and the later everything came in. I learned and stopped that bullshit.

If you make a fair rule then you don't have to explain shit about it to any student. And, not only do you not have to, but you should not.

I could tell you stories of nightmare students that would make your toes curl. On the lighter side, I've had students who had no business being in the class, to begin with. They'd get something like a 27 on the first test and when I advised them to drop the class because they had no chance of passing they'd ask me if they would pass if they got As on the rest of the tests. And they were serious.

I had a student file a complain about me with the dean because I failed her. She had an average of something like 45, didn't turn in the final (which I gave as a take home - I told you that I was easy) and she had missed most of the class quizzes. The dean hauled me in to set up some chance for this student to take the final in the summertime. Finally, I said, "Sure, I don't care."

I took the final from the math chair's class (so that I couldn't be accused of any impropriety in making the new test), looked through it and took out two questions about material that we had only minimally covered. So, she ended up with a test with 13 questions. She came in (and I was dragged in to administer the test to her). I gave her no time limit and told her to just drop it in my office when she was done.

She turned it in and she had only answered 6 questions! FAIL! You would think it was obvious and over, now. ... But no ... She filed another complaint with the dean that she needed to take it again. This time I told the dean to fuck off. Last time I taught at that school - by my own choice. I figured, if this was how they handled things I was just lucky that I never saw her in my office alone, and I wasn't willing to put myself at risk for that sort of bullshit.

The good students do perfectly fine with strict rules and solid deadlines. The bad students just use loose rules to be even worse students. And the administrations at most schools are total shit. Giving the student any extra leeway only aides the administrators in causing you more grief, at some point.

Be strict and curt. It works out best for everyone.

413 Emmie,

I just saw your note to the student.

I've been a professor for years. And I agree with most of what had been said to you tonight. A rule's a rule's a rule.

One thing I did that proved very useful: no paper or project or exam was worth more than 10% of the final grade. Example: in my last writing course, exams were 20% of the final grade. And there were 3 exams (incl final) that made up that 20%. My rule was hard & fast: no exam could be made up (though all students had the option to take their exam at the Uni's exam center instead of in the classroom -- which, over the years, very few did).

My explanation for divvying up the grades like that? That I knew there was Life Outside School; that sometimes, you get sick, or get a flat tire, or get dumped by your SO, or have a brain fart, or just plain DON'T GET an asssignment. And moments like those shouldn't torpedo a grade.

As far as no scanners/computers/wifi...in these days of phones that show movies, and all-night Kinko's, and colleges giving students free computer access via libraries, etc., it's just not an acceptable excuse. I let students send me attachments of some assignments (never final projects) in case they had printer issues, but that's as far as I bent.

So this girl had a pregnant horse? That news should've been delivered (ha) upfront, at the start of the semester, so you'd know, and possibly offer a fallback position to the student. I would always say the first week of class: If there's medical issues, tell me now, because stuff like that tends to get worse come end of semester.

As far as evals:
Tough to hear this, but it's a fact. You could bend every rule, give every benefit of the doubt, never raise your voice above a whisper...and SOME would find a reason to write "Worst Professor EVER".

So I was always tough-but-fair, and my rules (evolved over years in the classroom) were the same for everybody. This didn't make me popular with the admin (who blow with the prevailing winds), or some of my students, but I've got stacks of letters overflowing with gratitude & yes, love, from my boys & girls.

One day you'll find a balance you can live with. Good luck!

Illinois was ranked the worst in the nation, with state and local governments effectively taxing median households at 14.76 percent. WalletHub used several taxes to calculate Illinois' percentage; however, the most damning was the property tax. Illinois ranked second-worst in the nation for property taxes.

That's overall tax burden, and

Polling by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute showed 47 percent of Illinoisans want to leave the state, and the single biggest reason is Illinois' high tax burden.

But there's some good news:

The Illinois Senate is currently negotiating its so-called "grand bargain" budget deal, which includes billions of dollars in tax hikes for Illinoisans. Among the Senate's ideas: a permanent 33 percent income tax hike, implementing a tax on sugary beverages, raising taxes on food and drugs, and expanding the sales tax to include previously exempt services.
