Vermeer based this on an earlier painting of a similar subject by a lesser painter of the era, Dirck van Baburen. That painting can be seen in the background of Vermeer's painting "Lady Seated at a Virginal."
Han Van Meegeren, the famed 20th century art forger, faked a copy of Baburen's The Procuress - not to sell, but to use as a prop for his fake Vermeers! Now that's dedication to the craft. Posted by: broseidon being a capitalist pigdog (yknow, working) at April 17, 2017 09:39 AM (oZ6kz) 54

Even as a young artist, Vermeer had control of color and detail that added impact to his 'everyday' scenes. The facial expressions, like with Rembrandt, perfectly illustrate the artist's point. In this case, the greed of the older woman (procuress), the drowsy, maybe drunken, look on the soldier, the alluring smile and painted face of the whore, etc. (Wiki makes a big deal about how the models may be members of Vermeer's family and that has some hidden significance. Assuming these are relatives, it likely just points to convenient people to pose for the scene.)
Of more interest to me is the way Vermeer focuses the viewers' attention. The faces are clearly shown. But the brilliant color and detail is in the externals: the red of thee soldier's jacket, the yellow of the whore's coat, the blanket or rug covering her lower body and her crisp white head covering, and that blazing blue decanter. The act of paying a hooker ( a common enough situation) for her favors is less important than the details of the scene. Damn! This is fun. Thanks, CBD. Meanwhile, in Milwaukee, another arrest for driving while black.
http://tinyurl.com/mdlyso2 Davis was driving a Ford Explorer when she collided with a Chevy Traverse at North 92nd Street and West Capitol Drive, injuring a woman and her son who were in the vehicle. She then drove off at a high rate of speed, ran a red light and struck a van at North 92nd Street and West Lisbon Avenue. She continued to flee before striking Daniel, who was in a crosswalk walking north across Lisbon on the west side of the street. A man who followed Davis from the first crash said Daniel became trapped under the vehicle when it came to a rest on a sidewalk and that Davis drove back-and-forth four or five times in an attempt to dislodge her and flee the scene. The man then grabbed the front bumper to try to stop Davis while another man tried to break her driver's side window. Another man who ran up to the SUV told Davis that someone was trapped under the vehicle, but Davis just yelled back at him and continued going back-and-forth. The second man then grabbed a concrete block and placed it under a tire to prevent the vehicle from moving before Davis exited, lit a cigarette and started making a call on her cellphone as she walked away, according to the complaint. She was still walking when police arrived and was arrested after witnesses pointed her out. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Doctor of Thinkology at April 17, 2017 10:16 AM (Nwg0u) 194

Why is the WH Easter egg roll today instead of yesterday? Have they always done it the day after Easter?
Posted by: Tami at April 17, 2017 10:23 AM (Enq6K) Yes. This way you are asking fewer people to work on Easter Sunday. The egg roll requires a lot of people at the WH for security reasons and to conduct all the games the kids play. The kids who have been invited, etc. and have to be there early for a long wait through security, etc. are not being asked, along with their family , to forego family celebrations and church. And this way, the first family can enjoy their Easter also, at the location of the choosing. Posted by: Jen at April 17, 2017 10:45 AM (ZgC02) 279

Posted by: hogmartin at April 17, 2017 10:51 AM (8nWyX) Then complain via the account service. Something is not set on your account to the drivers, and they are doing what they are instructed because your personal instructions are missing. We have both UPS and Fed Ex and have had zero issues with deliveries. The drivers aren't deciding to not leave your items because they are assholes, it's likely that FedEx has a liability policy that unless they have verified instructions from you to leave items that don't require signatures, they are obligated to return the package per the senders instructions. Check with whoever sent the package, it may not need a signature legally (because it's alcohol, or ammunition, etc.) but they might be requiring FedEx to obtain a signature to record the delivery, so you don't go back on them and say you never got it. Jones exploits the shit out of vulnerable people and in fact might already exacerbate the problems of those who are prone to paranoia and other mental conditions and emotional problems. Railing on International Bankers destroying countries does not mean you hate Jews and it does not even imply that. BTW his wife is Jewish. Also interesting that she has waited 14 years to call him unfit when Infowars and Alex Jones are worth the most money they have ever been worth. She is using their children, which every study shows that they need fathers and single mother households are the biggest risk factor for children, to extort as much money as possible out of Jones. All the smaller packages I receive which originate with UPS are turned over to USPS before being delivered.
Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. My understanding is that with the surge in online shopping and subsequent huge need for additional delivery sevice, places like Amazon are using one carrier to start the delivery, and then that carrier(UPS or FedEx) delivers the package to a USPS facility who then continues it on it's delivery. I find that means it takes a day or two longer to get Amazon items when Amazon itself is fulfilling the request. If its an Amazon vendor sending the item directly, it's usually quicker. I've had items delivered from Europe and India on DHL that have only taken five days to get here....which was amazing to me. Posted by: Jen at April 17, 2017 11:13 AM (ZgC02) 378

I was feeling fairly excited about it, but when I got there I was asked one question (do you have any experience in school accounting) and of course the answer was no. So that's two strikes against me now that I know of right off the bat. So not feeling real encouraged right now. Plus it was an hour each way to get there, but that was part of the appeal - out in the country. But it's out of my hands now. Need some sleep, but I think I'll wait 'til the Chinese buffet opens first. Posted by: Country Boy - Michigan exile at April 17, 2017 11:19 AM (Jcg9Q) 403

As our UPS Driver is a good friend, during the Christmas holidays I hire on as his Driver Helper, and spend about six weeks in the jump seat. Twin Peaks - is it a good show, or a show that everyone feels they have to say is a good show?
It's long ago and far away...but, if I remember correctly- the show took a real dive in quality when David Lynch left (or was kicked out) during the 2nd season. Coherent surrealistic quirkiness is tough to do. Who knew? I seem to remember that "Twin Peaks" became "The Log Lady Hour" for several episodes. She being the least interesting character in the history of fiction. But, the quality picks back up towards the end cuz they brought Lynch back. I guess I need to rewatch since TP is returning. As the father of a 14 year old girl I think I'll be using the antifa girl video as a learning tool.
#1 - Before and after pic of the girl before and after college - this is what radical liberalism will do to you. #2 - No matter what side you're on and you show up at what likely will turn into a fight then you better damn well expect that you're fair game. Plan accordingly. #3 - If equality for all is demanded in today's society, when fists start flying it doesn't go back to the age of chivalry. #4 - Men are stronger than women...the movies and TV may tell you otherwise but you're not going to go all Lara Croft on a guy looking to hit someone especially when they have a head of steam. You're not collecting 100 nazi scalps. #5 - When in doubt, leave no doubt...just don't go. #6 - You may think Dad is being to tough or strict or too set in his old ways, but I'm trying to instill in you respect and responsibility for yourself so you're never in a position where I am thanking God you took a hit to the forehead instead of right between the eyes during a fight you had no business being in or at. My point still stands: Alex Jones exploits the weak-minded and mentally ill. He invokes shadowy cabals headed by 'international bankers' as the masterminds behind these world domination schemes.
Jones is a vicious little weasel who deserves what's coming to him, in whatever form it takes. Posted by: troyriser at April 17, 2017 11:13 AM (Fw5cQ) You are allowing your personal feelings about somebody dictate whether or not they can be fathers/parents and provide for their families. I seriously doubt that you have been paying attention to Jones career to make a sound judgement on the man. You dang sure don't know about the man personally. Because you don't like his message or politics therefore you want him and his children destroyed. That's vicious. There are numerous institutions that prey on the mentally ill and weak minded, yet I don't see you railing on about their employees and owners should lose their jobs, have their children taken away, and be forced into ruin. Oh Jones cheated on his wife with an employee Lee Ann Macadoo a couple of times. His wife is pissed and is exacting her revenge. Also she has their house and other assets already, but it's not enough apparently. Posted by: Widespread Pepe at April 17, 2017 11:39 AM (2qHjF) 465

Disclaimer: As an OSU alum, I'm very biased, but this is truly a feel good story. Saturday was the annual Spring scrimmage game at OSU. Attendance was sold out, with proceeds going to the James Cancer hospital at OSU/Urban and Shelley Meyer Cancer Foundation. There is a young teenager , Jacob Jarvis who was "adopted" by the OSU football team several years ago. Jacob has muscular dystrophy and is confined to a motorized wheelchair. He has been in the locker room at various high profile games, the OSU coaching staff has donated flights and hotels , game tickets for Jacob and family to attend OSU 2014 championship game, etc. Last week, two upperclassmen players asked Urban if they could have Jacob line up on the field and 'run" a touchdown at the end of the spring scrimmage. They figured it out and Jacob had his dream come true(he had said in the past he will always be sad that he can't play football or other sports) when he scored a touchdown after rolling through the Gray defense. Can't seem to get a tiny url. Click on www.elevenwarriors.com and scroll down to the bottom of the page, Jacob Jarvis Scores Final . Video that was shown on Fox this morning of Jacob's touchdown, notice his eye black and how he covers the football so no fumbles. Posted by: Jen at April 17, 2017 11:42 AM (ZgC02) 468

I've had Amazon deliveries come by UPS, FedEx, and once, DHL. Small stuff usually goes UPS or FedEx to the USPS for the final delivery.
A lot of the more esoteric stuff (electronics components, hobby gear) actually comes from smaller vendors, with Amazon as the retail front-end, so some of it may have actually come from Joe's Diode Shop via Amazon. It's hard to know who actually packed and shipped it. My parents live in Indianapolis, which is an Amazon hub, so the free 2 day Prime shipping often means they get it the next day. I would caution the Horde on the I don't agree with somebody's beliefs and speech and therefore they should be ruined in family court by lawyers and a vindictive spouse.
This is the game and strategy family lawyers and spouses use against members of the military and vets to take their children and destroy their lives because they believe they are justified because the Left hates everything out military stands for. This is bullshit. Posted by: Widespread Pepe at April 17, 2017 11:55 AM (2qHjF) 472

Find some interesting Italians, Parisians, Germans, Swiss, etc. to hang with and leave us all alone. They both know they left a mess, broke the law, etc. They were, no doubt, assured that DJT will be impeached so they can make a triumphant return like Napoleon from the Elbe. BUT, as it's turning out, they may be there for quite some time. Posted by: Soona at April 17, 2017 12:10 PM (Fmupd) 473

I don't have to know the man personally. I'm evaluating the harm he does and the damage it causes. Alex Jones is a weasel. I hope he goes down in flames. Posted by: troyriser at April 17, 2017 12:12 PM (Fw5cQ) 474
Left to right: Pinto 40 years after Animal House, Robocop without his helmet, Shrek when he wished to be human, and a slut.

NOT EVEN A VERMEER!
Just some "starving artist", cheaper than cheap bad copy sold to some art dealer who was too embarrassed to admit he was hornswoggled! Posted by: old codger at April 17, 2017 12:31 PM (fpd99) 476

I'm already going to hell for wishing ass cancer on him. I'm not sure how compounding that with a wish for embarrassment and impoverishment will make much difference. Posted by: Grump928(C) at April 17, 2017 01:05 PM (LTHVh) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.082 seconds. |
