Saint Julian Murdering his Parents
Spinello Aretino

According to the account that was very popular in the Middle Ages, Julian was of noble birth and while hunting one day, was reproached by a hart for hunting him and told that he would one day kill his mother and father. He was richly rewarded for his services by a king and married a widow. While he was away his mother and father arrived at his castle seeking him; When his wife realized who they were, she put them up for the night in the master's bed room. When Julian returned unexpectedly later that night and saw a man and a woman in his bed, he suspected the worst and killed them both.

"When his wife returned from church and he found he had killed his parents, he was overcome with remorse and fled the castle, resolved to do a fitting penance. He was forgiven for his crime when he gave help to a leper in his own bed; the leper turned out to be a messenger from God who had been sent to test him. "

34 Hey peeps.

The other day I told you I had just been to the best interview I had ever been on.

I got an email today from the guy, and he says a few things, among them, that he will be sending an offer to me as soon as possible.

I am taking that as a positive!

Thank you for your prayers and good vibes, Horde.

Now, among the other things he mentioned in the email was funding which is due in soon, but no deal is done until the deal is done.

Also, I will say that the economy must be a LOT better. I am getting a LOT of traction right now and just seriously turned on the find a new job thing about 3 weeks ago.

Prayers and vibes to all others who are currently searching. Your day is coming.

35 Bringing this over from the previous thread:

As for faith, that's a hard thing. I've been tested hardcore, and can't say I've always held fast...but I can at least say for myself I've found my way home eventually. And that's the point--no matter what happens in this life, my heart has a home and a guiding star. Nobody in this world can take that from me; I can only lose it if I refuse it. It's not an easy path, but in the end it's the one worth walking.

For those of you having doubts, make the effort. I think you'll find it's a better life if you do.
Posted by: Brother Cavil, keeper of the Deplorable Unicode Character at April 07, 2017 09:40 AM (9krrF)
--------------

Beautifully said, Brother Cavil. We are all tested from time to time. Some are tested harder than others. The tests are when we should turn towards God, rather than away.

Much easier said than done. I know that. But worth it to power through.

67 The mother and father were overjoyed to have found their son, as was Julian's wife. "She took care of them well and had them rest in her and Julian's bed". But an enemy went off seeking Julian and told him: 'I have sour news for you. While you are here, hunting, your wife is in bed embracing another man. There they are right now, still sleeping.'"

De Verazze continues: "And Julian felt deep sadness and his face drew into a frown. He rode back home, went to his bed and found a man and a woman sleeping in it. He drew his sword and killed them both. He was about to take off and never again set foot in that land, but as he was leaving he saw his wife sitting among the other women. She told him: 'There are your mother and father resting in your room'.

80 St Julian - from Catholic.org.

According to a pious fiction that was very popular in the Middle Ages,
Julian was of noble birth and while hunting one day, was reproached by a
hart for hunting him and told that he would one day kill his mother and
father. He was richly rewarded for his services by a king and married a
widow. While he was away his mother and father arrived at his castle
seeking him; When his wife realized who they were, she put them up for
the night in the master's bed room. When Julian returned unexpectedly
later that night and saw a man and a woman
in his bed, he suspected the worst and killed them both. When his wife
returned from church and he found he had killed his parents, he was
overcome with remorse and fled the castle, resolved to do a fitting
penance. He was joined by his wife and they built an inn for travelers
near a wide river, and a hospital for the poor. He was forgiven for his
crime when he gave help to a leper in his own bed; the leper turned out
to be a messenger from God who had been sent to test him. He is the patron of hotel keepers, travelers, and boatmen. His feast day is February 12th.

My favorite line: "He gave help to a leper in his own bed . . . ." Knowing what happened in his bed initially I am not sure why he would be anywhere near it with anyone else in the room but - eh - who I am I to second guess the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church.

He was forgiven for his crime when he gave help to a leper in his own bed; the leper turned out to be a messenger from God who had been sent to test him. "

The first two Harry Palmer (hell of a name) movies weren't spoofs. In fact, Ipcress File was a pretty solid spy movie and Funeral in Berlin was good too. They showed more of drudgery of spy work rather than the glamour of the Bond movies. The last one Billion Dollar Brain (directed by Ken Russell) was over the top and not good. Caine made two more in 90s that were very low budget and direct to video.

284 There's an issue with this painting. Big neck wounds like that should bleed be all over the place, pooling in the sheets etc. Also, unilateral neck stab wounds don't kill that quickly, and these guys are just lying there. So right away, we know that either the painter is really misrepresenting the story, or the story is wrong. We have to ask: why would a painrer misrepresent the styory like that in public, so plainly, when everyone could call hm on it? He wouldn't.

So the answer is simple: the story we have is wrong. The Saint is stabbing people who are ALREADY DEAD, probably poisoned by his wife, and he's stabbing them to cover up for her crime and take the fall. The fake story was propagated, probably by the Catholic Church, because the guys wife was probably a Bishop's sister or something.

287 Michael Caine's early spy movies--the ones where he plays cockney crook and spy Harry Palmer (starting with 'The Ipcress File')--are low budget spoofs of the James Bond movies

Brit Spy was a genre and the Bond films were at the silly end of that spectrum. Caine also did The Fourth Protocol, one of my favorite books ever though the movie was not half so good.

He and his military miscalculated.

303 The damn internet connection is in and out right now.

As horrible and explicit as this painting is, and that blood is certainly prominent, the audience presumably knew the whole story. Julian is either jinxed by evil spirits at birth or is being tested by the devil. The outcome of this tragedy is that he became The Hospitaller. I don't know where Aretino stands as an influence but the usual stiffness in the figures of the period is a bit less here. His use of color enlivens the whole work, making it more effective.

I wonder if this was one of a series in the story of Saint Julian. It's so stark it seems odd to be a stand alone piece.

305 So, St. Julian was an olden days Son of Sam?

Speaking of Son of Sam, it's a long, sometimes confusing read, but if you're a true-crime buff, I recommend the late Maury Terry's The Ultimate Evil. His take is that, while Berkowitz committed at least one murder, the other Sam killings were performed by a Satanic cult with Manson Family connections centered in Yonkers and that Berkowitz was selected as the fall guy.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at April 07, 2017 10:47 AM (X6fMO)

306
According to de Varazze, the night Julian was born, his father, a man of noble blood, saw pagan witches
secretly jinx his son into killing both his parents. His father wanted
to get rid of the child, but his mother did not let him do so. As the
boy grew into a handsome young man, his mother would regularly burst
into tears because of the sin her son was destined to commit. When he
finally found out the reason for her tears, he swore he "would never
commit such a sin" and "with great belief in Christ
went off full of courage" as far away from his parents as he could.
Some versions say that it was his mother who told him at the age of 10,
while others say it was a stag he met in the forest while hunting (a
situation used in depicting St. Julian in statues and pictures). After
fifty days of walking he finally reached Galicia where he married a "good woman", said to be a wealthy widow.

Twenty years later, his parents decided to go look for their now
thirty-year-old son. When they arrived, they visited the altar of St. James,
and "as soon as they came out of the church they met a woman sitting on
a chair outside, whom the pilgrims greeted and asked, for Jesus' love,
whether she would host them for the night as they were tired". She let
them in and told them that her husband, Julian, was out hunting. (This
is why he is also known as the patron of hunters). The mother and father
were overjoyed to have found their son, as was Julian's wife. "She took
care of them well and had them rest in her and Julian's bed". But the enemy
went off seeking Julian and told him: 'I have sour news for you. While
you are here, hunting, your wife is in bed embracing another man. There
they are right now, still sleeping.'"

De Verazze continues: "And Julian felt deep sadness and his face drew
into a frown. He rode back home, went to his bed and found a man and a
woman sleeping in it. He drew his sword and killed them both. He was
about to take off and never again set foot in that land, but as he was
leaving he saw his wife sitting among the other women. She told him:
'There are your mother and father resting in your room'. And so Julian
knew, and fell into a rage. 'The shrewd enemy lied to me when he said my
wife was betraying me', and while kissing their wounds he cried 'Better
had I never been born, for I am cursed in soul and body.' And his good
wife comforted him and said 'Have faith in Christ Almighty, a stream of
life and mercy.' They had no children... Gold and silver they had a
lot... And after seeking redemption in Rome, Julian built seven
hospitals and twenty-five houses. And the poor started flowing to him,
to Jesus' Almighty's love."

I wouldn't lend credence to anything the Russians say.

And about a 'proper' Sarin attack: there isn't one. The problem with gas (or particulate) dispersion has been evident since the beginning, when the Germans first employed chlorine gas at the 2nd Battle of Ypres in WWI. The wind shifted. Hilarity ensued.

The point is chemical warfare cannot be normalized; e.g., viewed by murderous dictators as an easy means of civilian pacification.

340 Assad and the Dictators just met #TheResistance.

After Eight Long Locust Years, President Trump stood up for Humanity and against the Dictators for a change.

President Trump drew a Red Line--and enforced it within 48 hours. He kept his word.

President Trump used our Intelligence Services against our adversaries, not against Democrats and senators.

And while the Left blathers on against "normalizing Trump", that is, accepting the results of an election, President Trump said we will not accept the Normalization of Dictators Spraying Children With Pesticides Like They Were Cockroaches.

Even the Chinese approved; now they know that the military technology that they purchased from the Clintons works as advertised.

Bravo, Mr. President. You struck a long overdue blow for America, for freedom and, dammit, For The Children(tm).

It's been so long since we had a president who didn't beg for Putin's permission or the Ayatollah's approval before acting, we'd almost forgotten what its like to have a president stand up for us.

Well done, sir.

Seriously, though.

I appreciate the effort. I do my best to never rise to insults myself.

I actually find debate more fun when I can continually tell my opponent to refocus on the original point of discussion.

"That's an interesting point, but not really that related. When we're finished discussing A, then we can come back and start discussing B."

In my experience, debates, especially political ones, tend to shoot off in five directions at once where a discussion on the morality of abortion becomes something about federally funded ant farm within five minutes. Those end up being completely worthless. Forcing focus actually makes the talks more productive, less emotional, and more interesting.

347 We were able to find a solution that didn't necessitate the use of force
that actually removed the chemical weapons that were known from Syria,
in a way that the use of force would never have accomplished. Our aim in
contemplating the use of force following the use of chemical weapons in
August of 2013 was not to intervene in the civil war, not to become
involved in the combat between Assad and the opposition, but to deal
with the threat of chemical weapons by virtue of the diplomacy that we
did with Russia and with the Security Council. We were able to get the
Syrian government to voluntarily and verifiably give up its chemical
weapons stockpile

in that region.

Not that I'm entirely convinced of the scenario, just I can see how it works.

Posted by: Brother Cavil, keeper of the Deplorable Unicode Character at April 07, 2017 10:38 AM (9krrF)

I do not see how Assad using chemical weapons (assuming he did) is any different than him going in with soldiers, lining people up and shooting them all in the head. They are just as dead either way. Him having chemical weapons is a concern in general but (again assuming he used them which I think is a rather large assumption given whose word we are taking on that) he did not use them on US citizens or our allies.

So how is this our business? If we are going to intervene here, are we responsible for policing all shit-hole dictatorships that slaughter their citizens? If so, what is the numerical cut-off? 80? 60? 1? If we are concerning ourselves with Syria's internal matters (where literally everyone is in one bad guy group or another) why are we not intervening in Venezuela where people are also being murdered by their government?

382 If I'm understanding this correctly, Congress gave Barky approval to send ground troops over to Syria to "train and equip" the rebels that we appear to be backing.

So last night's action was twofold. First, as a signatory to an agreement between us, Syria, and the Russians, that all chem. weapons in Syria(likely the WMD Bush thought was in Iraq, but the entire world watched news footage of caravans hauling out of Iraq to Syria) would be destroyed, we have a right and a duty to ensure that the other signatories are living up to their side of the deal. Or else why ever sign anything. Let everything be survival of the fittest....

Obviously the Syrians weren't. So we fixed that for them last night.

Also, as a couple of military analysts pointed out, we have troops on the ground in Syria. Rightly or wrongly, they are there and we need to protect them.
Ignore this gassing and what to say Assad wouldn't be emboldened to drop them on our troops next time.

Posted by: BurtTC at April 07, 2017 11:08 AM (Pz4pT)

The point is the normalization of the use of nerve gas and other chemical agents on civilians as a means of pacification. That's the point, the focus of the argument and the primary rationale behind the cruise missile attack on a Syrian air base.

If bombing the shit out of Mexico would somehow get that point across, then sure, why not? But it doesn't, it wouldn't. Hence, a cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase.

Posted by: troyriser at April 07, 2017 11:18 AM (Fw5cQ)

406 Didn't Susan Rice tell us that all chemical weapons had been removed from Syria? I mean, if you can't trust what the former president's top national security advisor said, then who can you trust?

John Kerry is who made that announcement and it was supposedly all of Assad's chemical weapons removed per the agreement reached in negotiations that included the Russians.
=====

Perhaps Assad did get rid of all he had as of a particular time. But what guarantee did our fearless diplomats have that Assad would not buy or make more? All felons up for parole claim they will never break the law again. Progressives always seem to be trustful of bad people for some reason.

414 So last night's action was twofold. First, as a
signatory to an agreement between us, Syria, and the Russians, that all
chem. weapons in Syria(likely the WMD Bush thought was in Iraq, but the
entire world watched news footage of caravans hauling out of Iraq to
Syria) would be destroyed, we have a right and a duty to ensure that the
other signatories are living up to their side of the deal. Or else why
ever sign anything. Let everything be survival of the fittest....

Obviously the Syrians weren't. So we fixed that for them last night.

Also, as a couple of military analysts pointed out, we have troops
on the ground in Syria. Rightly or wrongly, they are there and we need
to protect them.

Ignore this gassing and what to say Assad wouldn't be emboldened to drop them on our troops next time.

Posted by: Jen at April 07, 2017 11:11 AM (OBjuz)

Syria did not sign anything nor give any assurances that they had given up any weapons. The assurances came from the Russians. We were not enforcing any agreements and wouldn't have the right to enforce them with bombs even if we were.
