Manchin, Heitkamp Announce They'll Vote In Favor of Gorsuch

And Pat Leahy has indicated he's not inclined to filibuster Gorsuch.

That's not enough defectors to imperil a Democrat filibuster -- but one wonders how seriously they'll pursue one when they can't even say the whole party is in favor of it.

Is it really worth it for them to get the nuclear option deployed under these conditions, when the candidate is well-liked by the public and the Republicans will pay no price at all for nuking them till they glow?

Their only hope is to deploy the filibuster in the next nomination, which really will change the direction of the court (probably), and just hope that Trump hasn't nominated someone with Gorsuch's level of public acceptability.

Plus, their hypocrisy is just embarrassing:

6 Someone, perhaps Indy, pointed out that this is a smart play by Schumer. His monkeys will start flinging feces if the Dems don't oppose Gorsuch, but it's utterly futile and stupid. Therefore, someone who has no risk of being defeated (Leahy) torpedoes it and well, gosh darn it, there's nothing Chuck can do about it.

They're saving their fire for the next one, and they assume Collins and Murkowski will do them a solid. They're probably right.

68 I say this is still the time to invoke the nuclear option for the following reason: Gorsuch merely replaces Scalia and is not an existential threat to the existing balance. Thus the rabid Left will accept it, nuclear option or no.

But the next vacancy, if either Ginsburg or Breyer, will be balance altering. If we wait until then to use the nuke option, there will be riots in the streets - you mark my words. With the nuclear option already have been exercised it will take some of the fire (at least potentially the violent part) out of the Democrats.

Just my thoughts.

Not necessarily. Nobody expected Scalia to die of a heart attack.

Personally, I hope the Dems are dumb enough to filibuster Gorsuch. The Republicans have no choice but to nuke it now and get it over with and no matter who comes next it will just take 50 votes. Filibustering now just means they lose twice, filibuster gone and Gorsuch on the Court.

But in the end I don't think they are that stupid or we are that lucky.

Thurmond's office called about a constituent's problem they dropped whatever they were doing no matter how important it was. She said that's just one of the ways the the late Senator helped his voters. When his office got involved with a constituent's problem they got results ASAP. The voters of SC appreciated his attention to their concerns.

Again, there is no way of knowing that. Who here had Scalia as the guy to be replaced before he died suddenly? Nobody.
