Full of WIN. Prog Lamentations Is it bad that I enjoyed reading this story? Ivanka Trump's Secret Service roiling her D.C. neighbors. Man, I'd add more no parking signs every time they bitched. Oh, if it were some Democrat, you wouldn't be reading this at all. I'm willing to bet Obama, who lives one street over, has some no parking areas and large SUVs coming and going too. Earlier Friday, the United States voted against five resolutions it calls anti-Israel at the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva. The Trump administration lobbied allies to also vote no. No major U.S. ally did so, but Britain issued a warning that it would follow the United States' suit if the U.N. body continues to single out Israel for opprobrium.
"Today we are putting the Human Rights Council on notice," British Ambassador Julian Braithwaite said. "If things do not change, in the future we will adopt a policy of voting against all resolutions concerning Israel's conduct in the occupied Syrian and Palestinian territories. http://tinyurl.com/l9uf5p6 Fuck any #NeverTrumper who thinks we would have been better off with the Hildamonster. He said he would save Sully for last. Posted by: BourbonChicken at March 25, 2017 11:05 PM (VdICR) Sully didn't actually die. After he survived being "let go" by John Matrix, he crawled up that hill and reformed his ways. He became a cop, a cop who was spared by John Wick. He went to Wick's house after receiving a noise complaint and he survived by not inquiring further after Wick said he was just "sorting some things out". Sully and Big Sexy are the smartest guys in the 1st John Wick movie, . Where is the truth? Don't know, but given the appearance of publicity seeking by the parent in the story and the fact the media gets to blast a religious school...I'm not inclined to buy their take on events at face value. The phrase "a lot" can be either singular or plural. The rule, such as it is, depends on whether it is describing a "mass" or a countable noun.
Hot dogs would be countable. Say it as singular: A lot of hot dogs was eaten. That doesn't sound right. A lot of hot dogs were eaten. That sounds much better. Back before WWII, Lucky Strikes packages were green. After the start of WWII, their slogan became "Lucky Strike green goes to war!". After that, all of their cigarette packages were white.

That was Ken Thompson and the UNIX founding fathers' (well, founding nerds, I guess) programming philosphy. Rather than making a program do a lot of things, make each program do one thing, and do it well. To do multiple things, you use them together. 277: I was never anything but an amateur, of course, but I was reading something the other day that made me feel could.
Back in the 90s, OOP and C++ became the new rage. I hated it. I couldn't make myself learn that shit. I was stuck in "procedural" thinking, and now, what do that call it "imperative" I think. I got to thinking I was probably getting old fogey-ish, an old dog who couldn't learn new tricks. Then I read, just a while back, that Ken Thompson didn't think too much of C++ either. Indeed, back in the 90s, Bjarne Stroustup (however the hell he spells it) threw a flying hissy fit at Thompson when he said something mildly critical in an interview. He said he sort of kept his mouth shut after that, but recently he's opened it up a little. He said something like "half of it is pure garbage". And then I read some Linus Torvalds said. He went on a epic rant against C++ a few years ago. Some dick made some comment about him writing Git in pure old C, and Torvalds went on an epic rant, telling him just all the ways it was bad, and then said if using pure C did nothing other than keeping people like him away from the code, then it was worth it. It was beautiful. So the fact that these guys, the high priests if you will, didn't think too much of it made my day. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 25, 2017 11:41 PM (aKqWT) 292

To this day it is still my favorite movie, and never had the exposure that it deserves.

Language and syntax really makes the difference. C++ is different enough that the OOP parts just seem alien and grafted on (which, technically, they are). Objective-C, Ruby, and Python feel a little more natural with the OO implementations. Even Java, which people love to knock on, has a reasonably comprehensible OO scheme that you can wrap your head around.

Last Monday, I went to a local bar and grill in East Mesa to have a sammich, and a few beers. Crowd was kind of thin. Presently, this guy comes in sits briefly at the bar some distance away, and then disappears, outside to the patio, I think. Bartender came around, said, "Do you want another beer? That guy who was just here bought a round for the house." Me, "sure." The guy comes back in, so I wander over, and thank him kindly for buying the round. He said he was with a touring band, and they had just finished a tour, and he was happy to be back on his old home grounds. So, I went back to my chair, and later he buys another round for the house, and he wandered over near where I was sitting. I asked, "so are you a musician with the band, or part of the crew?" He said he was a guitar player. I asked "what band?" and he replied, "Did you watch the Grammys?" I said, "no, I don't have TV." He said, "Well, I have played with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Eric Clapton, and a bunch of others." Didn't give his name. Guy is about 5' 10", long brown hair well past his shoulders, no waves in it, sort of slender in the face. Sort of soft-spoken, and I'd guess his age to be 50-something. Wonder who it could be? Did you know Windows 10 (x64 only) has bash, now? They came up with a new "windows subsystem for Linux" (WSL), which is a kernel mode driver that emulates the Linux kernel. It can run Linux ELF binaries (no X stuff, just command line). They got with the Ubuntu people and made a version of Ubuntu to install with WSL. Anyway, you've got honest-to-god real bash that you can run on Windows. That made me actually install Windows 10 the other days, when I learned of this. And then I decided to play with VS 2017 under it. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 25, 2017 11:57 PM (aKqWT) 319

I know in the metal world bands sometimes dudes have visa problems and can't get into certain countries, so a "touring" musician jumps in to do certain shows, or a string of shows. Metal bands are usually tight knit, they don't just grab musicians depending on what area code they are playing in. I know other genres seem to be more flexible, usually the king shit is in front, and the rest of the band might as well be wallpaper. Its possible this dude was just a hired gun. He sounds too young to be an original member or a long time member of the bands you mentioned. He could be a recently acquired steady member too, but it don't sound it, but I am guessing. Chess is not for the old, although the old like the idea of sitting around for a couple of hours playing a game. Chess is a mental game on two levels. First, you have the rote memory of openings and traps. Then you have to have the mental stamina to work through a puzzle after every move. Competitive chess, believe it or not, is exhausting. I say this as having won 2nd place in a high school chess tournament. I lost my first game and was in the 'loss' bracket. So at game 8, the final game, I was 6-1 and my opponent was 7-0. If I lost, I was something like 8th, or worse. If I won, I could only be second. I won that match. My consolation was the winner did not go undefeated. Believe it or, I still have those matches in my mini-spiral chess notation book, along with that 2nd Place trophy. And, yes, former President Putz, I earned that fucking 2nd Place trophy and am damn proud to have it adorn my bookshelf. That hard-earned 2nd Pace trophy is a big reason why I hate participation trophies. Posted by: RickZ at March 26, 2017 12:26 AM (hkdnQ) 348

Something else good. There was a controversy a while back. MS got caught doing something terrible. Someone noticed that a simple program compiled with VS 2015 was actually phoning home.
The got to digging and found the fucking run time library was actually generating "telemetry calls" back to Microsoft servers. A simple "Hello world" program would cause Windows to phone home to Microsoft. MS said it was an "oversight" they simple forgot to mention. It was for "your benefit" to help with support for VS products of course, of course. That just spooked me. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 26, 2017 12:31 AM (aKqWT) 360

The -S flag for gcc is kind of fascinating (to the kind of person who finds this stuff fascinating, anyway). It compiles the code but halts once it gets to assembly language and spits that out instead of an executable binary. Utterly useless on a large project, but kind of neat to see what the difference between e.g. if (true) and if (1 == 1) looks like on different platforms. 361: Just about all the compilers can generate an assembler listing if you desire. I've always done that, and did that even for that little Hello World I just did.
I said I was going to learn x64 assembly and actually write something in the new 64-bit. I haven't yet. But I always look at the assembly output. I think I can almost start now. You've got more registers, R9 - 15 or whatever, plus more XMM registers than in 32-bit mode. It is hard for old dogs to learn new tricks. The calling convention changed with x64, for one, and I'd have to burn that in my brain. MASM 64 is a bit different in the syntax, the directives. Admittedly, my demands on a computer are very modest, almost primitive, by today's standards. But I wish there were a few simple packages that did one thing and did it well.
In the early-ish 80s I had a Mac SE which ran off two 800K floppy disks: one for the operating system and one for the program and content. I had a word processor called WriteNow. It was simple to use, had enough features to turn out excellent documents, cost almost nothing and required less than 400K of disk space to run. And I never had a problem with it. I think it was discontinued in the 1990s. I wish there was something like it now for Windows machines instead of the bloated, overly featured dog's breakfast approach that is common today, prone to bugs, and expensive or charging a monthly or annual fee. It took about thirty minutes to learn WriteNow's capabilities instead of spending hours or weeks of class learning Word. An equivalent simple spreadsheet program with basic sort functions would be nice. I'm not up to date on computer 'stuff'. The last program I wrote was in COBOL and done on a keypunch machine. (Not joking.) I'm surprised there isn't a market for simple computers with a few basic features. I can't be the only one out here that doesn't need the latest gaming resources, integrated everything, and forty-eleven other things I don't use or need. You ought to read the EULA for Win 10. Hell, when I installed, I was careful not to accept the defaults, and go through all the privacy options and turn everything off I could. There were several pages. Now, they want you to create a "Microsoft User account". This is a "cloud" account. When you login, it touches base with MS' servers and all that shit. This is to "help" you synchronize all your devices to the same UI settings.
Fuck that. You can still create an old style local user account, as you did back in the old NT days. But they tried to hide it pretty good in Windows 8. In Win 10, it was actually a little easier to do it. Too many complaints. But they've got this new "Cortana" thing, a voice activated Siri like thing. You ought to read the EULA for that. It will send every damn thing to microsoft. If you use pen and "ink" input, it said it was even going to "analyze your handwriting". That is, MS' servers were going to take you handwriting and use that for purposes.... That damned Microsoft online account also creates an "advertisng ID" which they will share with their "partners". This tracks every damn thing you do on the web. I disabled all that shit, of course. It's just awful. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 26, 2017 12:50 AM (aKqWT) 380

Now, that was using the vaunted (by MS' spiel) optimizer with the default setting. Now, the program was simply a main() which called printf with "Hello World" as the string. This was x64 (64-bit mode) version. The damned optimizer actually inlined the printf function. It spewed out the code for my main, then I noticed it spewed assembly for printf(). The source was simply this: #include <stdio.h> int main(int argc, char **argv) {printf("Hello World!\n");return 0;} In the assembler listing, it compiled that, then it put the assembler for printf right afterwards. The main code was actually just a few instructions. Loaded the address of the string literal, then put a call instruction for "printf", which it put right behind. What's crazier is, it's using a static library. 100KB of shit is linked right in the .exe program, but the damned optimizer (I assume) decided it was going to put the printf() code right in with that little main() for some reason. And do a call to it. It wasn't really an inline, where, rather than issue a call, it just spews the code for the function right in with the calling function, eliminating the call.
I'm going to look in the header files (which will be a true MEGLO exercise I'm sure). That was one of Ken Thompson or Linus Torvalds complaint about modenr compilers. You have a compiler and hardware that can compile 100,000 lines of code per second, yet it takes 30 minutes to compile all the damned header files before it even gets to your own program. Improving my search string: Yep, it's not the optimizer, it's the way printf() is declared in the header. Unless you turn on the correct define string, it acts as though printf() (and many others) were actually defined right in your program. So that's why the compiler did that. I should go trolling garage sales for an old Radio Shack computer chess board. I used to have a portable one with the little peg-pieces that I played the hell out of in high school. Plus, it was either merciful or just not that bright; on level 4 of 10 it would offer a good challenge, on level 5 I could beat it once in a while. Plus, there's something about surveying real pieces on a real board that kind of makes it more... accessible maybe? Chess on a screen doesn't really convey what's going on for me. AOP,
Oh I've got Linux, 3 versions installed actually. :-) Fedora is what I got started with. Well, that's 3 versions on the "bare metal". I've got even more in virtual machines, including two Ubuntu versions. I'm a nut. I've got Windows XP, both 32 and x64. Then both 32 and 64 of Windows 7. 64 bit of Windows 8.1. And now Windows 10, x64. Plus the Fedora. Then a couple of Server versions of Winblows, too. Now, you talk about multiboot. Rube Goldberg, you might say. But I've got it all working. Medal of Honor.
One day at a place I volunteer an older and a younger guy walk in. Older guy's wearing a sort of worn golf hat. Skinny, looks like a fit 70-yr old. Younger guy is sort of average to "soft" looking. Older guy is quiet, smiles, few words to say. When they leave, the head of the outfit comes out and mentions that the older guy was this guy: http://preview.tinyurl.com/kpgu2xz Citation at the wikipedia entry should be read by anyone wanting to feel small and inadequate (well, more so than most of us do anyway): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_J._Modrzejewski I had the very strong and distinct impression one could spend most of a day with this guy, doing whatever, and never know anything of his exploits in the war. Probably not unusual for the type. Posted by: rhomboid at March 26, 2017 01:36 AM (QDnY+) 428

Virtual machines are great. One thing I did, that some of you fellow old farts might enjoy is creating a virtual machine to run the ancient software of your youth. I had, back in the 90s, late, quite a Rube Golberg set up at the time. DOS, Win 3.11, and then Win 95 and 98. Sometime in there, I went NT, with NT 4.0. I created a virtual machine, using Virtual PC, that faithfully recreated that old setup. I like Virtualbox now, but it doesn't have any additions for the old Win9x or 3.x line, which the older versions of Virtual PC did. The Virtual PC that shipped with Win 7 will still run it. Anyway, I can run a virtual machine with that old stuff there, including the old 16-bit compilers and shit. I've got quite a few virtual machines for several of my old setups. If you like to play, you might enjoy doing something similar. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at March 26, 2017 01:45 AM (aKqWT) 437

Posted by: yankeefifth at March 26, 2017 01:42 AM (cPsPa) Sliced. With a tap of garlic powder or cumin. Shredded is one of those food hack things that can help if you're working out the right time/temperature for your stove, but if you've got it worked out to the point where you get melty cheese and toasty bread and not soggy bread or burned toast with cold cheese, it's not really necessary. Posted by: hogmartin at March 26, 2017 01:48 AM (8nWyX) 439

Posted by: yankeefifth at March 26, 2017 01:43 AM (cPsPa) Sharp (old) cheddar cheese, melted upon a slice of hot apple pie is very good. The slightly tart taste of the cheese blends well with the sweetness of the pie. Nobody thinks twice about a dairy product like ice cream being dumped onto a slice of pie, so why all the virtual eye-rolls for another dairy product, cheese? But no yogurt; that's kinky. I don't agree with the idea that ISPs should be able to sell your browsing history, but I also don't agree with any agency "regulation" or "rule". If it's important enough for a "rule" (which is a law in all but name), then pass a law. Make our elected officials answer for it instead of hiding behind executive agencies.
The reporting over it has been abysmal. The legislation doesn't "allow" ISPs to sell your metadata- they're already allowed to do so. It simply prevents a change that hasn't taken place yet. Posted by: Hollowpoint at March 26, 2017 03:42 AM (KRwzj) 477

The facts of life regarding those water wigglers: Yes they're a child's toy and support the Wisconsin girl's entrepreneurial efforts to sell these as such. That said, permission to be honest? These toys were around when I was a school girl and precociously minded young ladies, such as myself, repurposed these items for a blissful introduction to the physical pleasures of one's being. I know for a fact I wasn't the only one and many women will silently recall these toys with a wry smile. Yet to ban wigglers, one would have to remove other unacknowledged female first loves, such as brush handles and vibrating toothbrushes. And there are many others available to the resourceful girl; where would such ban end?

I think we should all organize a little bit of nonviolent resistance against all of these people using metadata... Make it worthless. Get a bunch of our best minds together, and make a list of all of the most vile concepts (and unlikely niche products) that a group of individuals as deranged as an internet community can think of, with the only limit on its length being what a web search can handle... And get everyone to spam Google with the same search. Make searches for anti-fungal toe creams, some of the more vomit-inducing types of German porn, an exactingly specific type of wood screw, and pet iguana food all jump like crazy at the same time. Make them think the whole world really wants to be sold an Elvis-shaped vibrating butt plug. They want our searches? Let's destroy their faith in humanity.
