Terry Pratchett once theorized that each country or culture has some really disgusting food item that they never eat themselves, but they give to gullible foreigners because they think they're eating "authentic ethnic food."
I've thought that for a long time, this isn't food they actually like and eat, its food they trick visitors with. Its a national joke on tourists. Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at March 27, 2017 01:09 PM (39g3+) 3

Some southeast Asian countries have rules against opening/using both durian and fish sauce (comparable to this Swedish horror) in an enclosed public space (buses, ferries, etc.).
For obvious reasons. Meanwhile, I doubt this Swedish horror would out-gross the smell of America today, fermenting as it has for much longer than 6 months in race-baiting, authoritarianism, ignorance, self-dealing, lawlessness, and the cretinization of public culture. I never got the fascination with eating ridiculous food. Doesn't seem much different than when kids in elementary school would take the scraps from everybody's lunches mix them together and dare some kid to eat it.
I'll eat it if and only if it tastes good. The fact that people usually have to be tricked into eating the thing doesn't instill much confidence in me that it's good food. Posted by: joe, living dangerously at March 27, 2017 01:15 PM (KUaJL) 50

At one of my favorite Indian restaurants (Pasand in
Irving TX) they always have a fish curry that I avoid (buffet)- (except once)- because as I found out when I ate a bite -they leave the skin on. Fish is not my fave anyway except for salmon and fortunately they have lots of other yummy options like goat curry, chicken 65, sambar, chicken curry etc -they are definitely better at south Indian food (from Andhra Pradesh). Another Indian restaurant I go to has a chutney that tastes a little like floor cleaner -in a good way! Pasand means favorite and it usually lives up to its name for me anyway. The gross items in American cuisine are pretty regional: pigs feet from the south, scrapple from the MD/PA area, etc.
We don't have any grody fermented items that I can think of, but that is merely because we found easier ways to preserve food than fermenting it when we became a country. Let's face it, we are a multi-cultural place when it comes to food, and we kept only the BEST food items or improved upon the originals and made them better. we are more than double per capita cost of Japan and France. http://tinyurl.com/mqkfec2" Has revealing stats. US healthcare spending has been out of control for decades. This has been widely known but still gets insufficient attention. It WILL break the bank. Social security can be covered, if our economy can get back to 3.5% annual growth. But nothing will cover current trends in healthcare spending. Because employers mostly cover it, most Americans don't realize it, even though it is coming out of their pockets, one way or another. For many (most?) Americans, it's actually a bigger cost than housing. Most of our spending goes to chronic illness. Diabetes alone will break the bank on current trajectory. Core problem with ObamaCare is that it expanded coverage in a way that was financially flawed, but did nothing on costs Posted by: Ignoramus at March 27, 2017 01:54 PM (SIY7D) Posted by: Kodos the Executioner at March 27, 2017 01:54 PM (BWL+E) 275

Fun Fact: Surströmming is scandavian for "Yes, this is the only thing left we have to eat, be greatful that you do not starve". Where Lutefisk is scandi for "We eat this to foster Christs suffering upon ourselves."

Cost curves for most non-insured medical costs are normal - i.e. any rises have mostly reflected advances in technology/practices that of course cost something.
Cost curves for everything else (most things)? Guess. It's NOT complicated. Disconnect prices from products and services, get North Korea. Suppress/limit competition, enable cartelization ..... guess what happens to prices. O-care literally addressed nothing of importance. It has nothing that addresses any of the problems mentioned. Oh - one other *minor* flaw with it - it arbitrarily destroyed the individual and some of the small group markets, with a devastating impact on millions (estimate is 3 to 5 times the number of "beneficiaries" who get the crappy subsidized O-care plans - Medicaid is entirely separate). But tax cuts are what's needed. Because when you have so much excess revenue, such large surpluses and positive fiscal trends, we simply need to get taxes down. Except for the largest tax increase in US history, targeted on a select group, with ruinous consequences. That tax disaster just has to remain. Never had pickled herring, don't like the taste of anchovies by themselves, but canned sardines are an under-appreciated snacky. Get some good ones*, mash them up with some olives and capers, put them on a cracker. People get kind of weirded out by them, but if you're cool with tuna salad, nom dem 'dines.
* King Oscar brisling are probably the best you can find in any grocery store, but if you have access to a decent import shop that stocks things from the Mediterranean, the world is your can of sardines. http://mouth-full-of-sardines.blogspot.com/ Posted by: hogmartin at March 27, 2017 02:05 PM (8nWyX) 312
We could end 90% of the malpractice crap by greatly limiting lawsuit jackpots. That would eliminate many procedures ... they used to say that could cut cost by 15% ... might be much higher.
And any that get Medicaid or any free care, no lawsuits allowed, nurse practitioner as first line of defense, generic meds ... hey, it's free. Posted by: illiniwek at March 27, 2017 02:05 PM (BrMft) 313
I asked the other day, what exactly is in a fish taco.
Posted by: Under Fire at March 27, 2017 01:47 PM Iirc, it's some variety of white fish (fried I think), finely shredded cabbage and some kind of white sauce. Or something like that. Maybe one of the Cali Horde can adjust the gaps in my memory for you. Why is it that all the women in the 2nd Irish video are hot, but the guys look like dweebs? Not complaining about the Irish women, now -- but do all Irish men look like they're antifas or Occupy Wall Street clowns?

35 Or, what's that Klingon dish? gagh? Shoulda gone with that.
* * In one of his earlyu standup routines George Carlin mentioned ordering ham and eggs in the South. "What's that white stuff down there?" "Hell, them's grits!" "They're movin', man. . . ." Imagine if he'd seen gagh. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at March 27, 2017 03:10 PM (3Td/K) 318
As an authentic Swedehadi, it is something that is commonly eaten (not just for foreigners) but is something of a novelty in modern times. It is one of those things you eat to prove you are authentic or strong...because the old timers had to eat it to survive.

A little...interesting...to watch the sweet little old church ladies tear through a big ol pile of 'em. * * I've lived in Crawfish Land most of my life, and have never seen the point. The meat? Fine, in a pie or something. Sitting outdoors in heat that would stun a Cape buffalo, to pull open nasty little red-black insectoids for a speck of meat the size of your little fingernail? Uh, no. I think a crawfish boil is just a socially sanctioned way for grownups to play with their food. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at March 27, 2017 03:14 PM (3Td/K) 320

Smelliest food I ever had was in Taipei, as the guest of a business associate.
When I said I would try anything, he had the waiter bring me a fermented tofu dish called Kyodofu. The Chinese character for the Kyo means "horrible". It smelled like pig shit. Really. But....the taste was actually pretty good! Posted by: Noam Sayen at March 27, 2017 03:42 PM (611Lm) 322

Some Swedes even today do eat the stuff, but not really much especially among the young. It is available canned but must be served in a traditional multi item meal setting, which either means assembling it or waiting for special serving offerings in expensive places with reservations, etc. Much more common more north in the country than in places like Stockholm. It is not eaten straight and skin on except in these vids. It is not just a joke to torture ignorant tourists...

In my family we eat both, though 911 has made sustromming close to impossible outside the old country and no one wants to visit Sundsval or Ostersund at that time of year, well maybe rural people. But heck Ljusdal is more fun in the winter than Sundsval.
As to eating this stuff as a dare, I assure you it is not, after about 6-7 months you can have dreams about it, which is why you buy cans when it is sunny and warmerish. Of course some say this is because that is what the brain parasites want, but my mother is a medical doctor and she assures us that is not the case, she thinks it is a form of Norrmalmstorg Syndrome, and points out that sometimes mental disorders make us happier and more productive. Besides they also claim that the parasites want us to crave large vintage American cars, rockabilly, metal music, firearms, tractor pulls, snow mobiles, and elk (Moose) hunting, and yet the population of The UP and North Idaho for the large part do not eat either. And since they also include clog dancing, which I detest, it is clear that the theory is just wrong. The stuff is amazing and not just because I have little recall of any night or weekend on which it was consumed. Posted by: Roy CT at March 27, 2017 08:28 PM (wdHQo) 328

I do not think this dish can even compare to something a
Thai coworker ate one day at work. He opened some container of a fish based hot sauce, which he poured onto his food. Everyone in the room ran for door to avoid having to hurl their lunch. I will do my best to describe the odor: Imagine the Civil War gut wagon scenes from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Now imagine letting the corpses stew under a hot Sun to the point the smell got so bad that it drove the maggots off the gut wagon. That is what his sauce smelled like!
