The Lute Player
Theodor Rombouts

From the Philadelphia Museum of Art web site....

Lute players were often ridiculed for the inordinate amount of time they devoted to tuning their instruments. The intense look of this street musician seems to underscore the difficulty of the task and suggest that perhaps more than musical harmony is at stake. Showing a musical instrument being tuned was a veiled reference to striving for harmony in love. Stringed instruments could also symbolize temperance, especially when shown in the company of a tankard and a pipe, as here.

There is no truth to the rumor that Garrett was the model for this work.

Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away,

225 Thanks, CBD, another excellent painting to deal with. The period Rombouts represents, late-ish 1500s to about 1630 must have been an interesting one in Europe. The Dutch Masters, the Italian Renaissance, Shakespeare and the other Elizabethan dramatists, global exploration, rise of the middle classes, and so many other matters of culture and commerce: imagine the 24/7 news coverage today trying to keep up with it all.

Aside from the obvious technical talent in this painting (look at the detail of the player and objects, you can almost feel the nap of the table cloth), Rombouts' palette is interesting. It is an indoor, dimly lit scene but not dark. The red of the table covering is relatively bright but it is a muted red not like a ruby in sunlight. The player's hat and clothing show the sheen of rich fabric and color but, again, muted by the indoor light. It's a delicate balance and Rombouts manages it effectively. And at that it is not as dark as some of his other tavern scenes.

I laughed at the player's facial expression. This guy is a showman, letting his audience see the effort needed to, finally, display his talents. Why, he's so serious he is ignoring his drink and smoke to get things just right. Maybe this is the Elizabethan era version of a warm up act.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable and impressive painting.

The "can't tell a woman what to do with her body" seems to imply that the ghoulish late-term abortion 'n harvesting/PP video activity is A-OK, since the baby has been de facto declared an unperson.

"Western Christian civilization, of which you're a part, is one of the great glories of mankind. These are the things we stand for. We stand for liberty, liberty of association, freedom of speech. We stand for the equality of everyone in our society before the law, men as well as women. We could make a list of all the things. But let's get back to respecting these things. These are the glories of our ancestors. These are what thousands of our ancestors died to protect and preserve. And if we allow those things to go because we are afraid of being politically incorrect, or of hurting somebody by suggesting that perhaps their value system may not be quite as nice as ours, then we are fools, and ultimately, scoundrels."

281 Have to admit, part of the appeal of this painting is nostalgia. In my youth I played in a folk music combo at the last gasp of the beatnik coffee house era. It had the same dim lighting, earth tone walls and splashes of color in the table cloths. Of course it had the obligatory wax covered chianti bottles holding candles on each table. I don't think we were great showmen but we did play up the song lyrics, especially the humorous or silly songs.

Haven't thought of this for a long time. Made me smile. Wonder if I can still play some of the songs.

289 Speaking of books, since I'm never on the Book Thread:

I'm into volume 3 (The War Years, Volume 1) of Carl Sandburg's 6 volume biography of Abraham Lincoln.

It just might be my favorite biography I've ever read. It's dense, but with a purpose. When he went off on a 10-15 page tangent to describe the life and ideology of Charles Sumner, it was purposeful and useful to the overall narrative of Lincoln's life and presidency.

"There is a demographic catastrophe happening in Europe that nobody wants to talk about, that we daren't bring up because we are so cagey about not offending people racially. And rightly we should be. But there is a cultural thing as well. By 2020, 50 per cent of the children in Holland under the age of 18 will be of Muslim descent"

Why it's almost as if the judge already had something ready for this.

I'm a fan if only because of his voice. He's one of the very few film actors with any depth and resonance in his voice. James Earl Jones and the late Christopher Lee are in that group. Sam Elliot's voice is in a class of its own. On behalf of my fellow basso profundi, I appreciate them.

16th century sailing vessels
Protagonist having no idea why he's there
Plopped at a facility with other people in a similar situation, all the ships forming a barrier to the bay where the facility is located
Kept isolated, talk of integrating them into a new society
Protagonist begins to be convinced that he's in 16th century
Manages to sneak out of the facility right as they're closing the doors
Sees tripods killing individuals who are making a run for it
Protagonist sneaks back in with knowledge of real world

*alarms goes off and I must go to work now*

I shall think on this. I have 3 more books in my head after the one I'm writing, but this could turn into the 4th...

Somewhere in my dump I have an book that illustrates the collection at the Prado. My parents bought it and left me with the distinct impression that if I ever wanted to obsess over dead and doomed people, I should spend a great week there.... Yeek.

Son returned from wedding in MO to find several units in his apartment complex were on fire. Thankfully, his apartment was spared.

Prayers for those families, please.
