Good afternoon morons and moronettes, and welcome to the Saturday Afternoon Chess/Open Thread, the only AoSHQ thread with content specifically for all of us chess nerds who pay homage in the temple of Caïssa, goddess of the chessboard. And, for those of you who aren't nerdly enough for chess, you can use this thread to talk about checkers, or other games, or politics, or whatever you wish, only please try to keep it civil. Nobody wants to get in the middle of a pie fight on a Saturday afternoon. Except if you're hungry.

The Limits of Artificial Intelligence

Over across the pond, they've started up a new institute to study human consciousness and artificial intelligence:

The new institute, which will have arms at UCL and Oxford University, has been set up to study human consciousness through physics and tease out the fundamental differences between artificial and human intelligence.

If successful, it could prove for the first time that the human brain is not simply a gargantuan supercomputer, but may exhibit quantum effects far beyond the realms of current imagining - a controversial theory that many scientists believe to be impossible.

As part of this launch, they're solicting answers to this chess problem:

This is a weird-looking position. It is extremely unlikely that you would ever encounter it in an actual game. But it's perfectly legal, and composed specifically to make a point.

The chess problem - originally drawn by Sir Roger - has been devised to defeat an artificially intelligent (AI) computer but be solvable for humans. The Penrose Institute scientists are inviting readers to workout how white can win, or force a stalemate and then share their reasoning.

If you give the position to your chess app, it most likely will evaluate it as a big plus for Black (if your chess evaluates the position to be roughly even, I would like to know which one you're using. I suspect the Penrose Institute would like to know, too.)

The main goal is to force a draw, although it is even possible to trick black into a blunder that might allow white to win...Both humans, computers and even quantum computers are invited to play the game and solutions should be emailed to puzzles@penroseinstitute.com.

I fed the position to my chess app, and, as predicted, it determined that Black has a whopping big advantage. So Black should win, right? Should be easy, right? But as I watched it make a few moves, it became immediately obvious why Black will never be able to a win from this position, despite having this supposed "whopping big" advantage.

Pretty straightforward:

Problem 2 - White To Play

1. Nf7+!

Black has two responses to this. He might think, "Oh no, I don't want to lose my queen, so I'd better take the rook." So...

1...Rxf7

But then

2.Qc8+ Bxc8
3.Rxc8+ Rf8
4.Rxf8#

Or, Black may think, "No, the queen is lost, so I'd better move my king and hope for the best."

1...Kg8

And then this happens:

2.Nxh6+ Kh8
3.Qg8+ Rxg8
4.Nf7#

After this, White says, "How do you like them apples? Smothered mate FTW, baby!" to which Black replies "Eat me."

Problem 3 - White To Play

1.Re8+ Rf8

Forced.

2.Nh6+ gxh6

Not 2... Kh8 3.Rxf8#

3.Rg3+ Kf7

And if 3...Kh8 then again, 4.Rxf8#

4.Re7#

Problem 4 - White To Play

5r2/8/4RbP1/5P1K/8/8/8/5k2 w - - 0 1

The key here is to simplify the position. But you need to be careful how you do it.

1. Rxf6 Rxf6

Now, don't do what I did when I first saw this problem, which is to make an immediate rush to queen. Because it fails: 2. g7 Rxf5+ 3. Kg6 Rf2 4. Kh7 Rg2 and Black will secure the draw next move by trading his rook for the pawn.

The smart move is:

2.Kg5!

And the endgame is now 2 connected passed pawns vs. a rook, which White will win. Play might proceed:

2... Rc6
3.g7 Rc3

So this is me playing against my chess app. It's going to try to harass me with annoying checks, which I need to escape from to gain time for the pawn to queen. But first, I need to support the advanced pawn.

4.f6 Rg3+
5.Kh6 Ke2

And now here come the checks.

6.f7 Rh3+
7.Kg6 Rg3+
8.Kf6 Rf3+
9.Ke7 Re3+
10.Kf8

Ha! And now he can't check me, so I can advance.

10...Re4
11.g8=Q Kd3?

What a crap move for a machine to make. For some reason, it can't see that I'll just immobilize both of its pieces with a pin, and then trade my queen for its rook, leaving him with nothing and me with a queenable pawn.

12.Qg6 Kd4
13.Qxe4+ Kxe4 and White wins.

Endgame of the Week

5r1k/6R1/8/8/8/8/1B6/K7 w - - 0 1

Black is paralyzed by a deadly pin. But if White immediately plays 1.Rf7+ with the intention of taking the rook, Black thwarts this with 1...Kg8. So White must bide his time.

Black's problem is that his king is frozen, so he has to move his rook. Therefore, when it is his turn to move, he needs to move it to a square where it can't be attacked with a discovered check.

White must take into account that even though Black's king is frozen, he has a couple of annoying checks in his pocket. He could play either 1...Ra8+ or 1...Rf1+, depending on White's "biding my time" move. But notice that if Black plays the former, then White will play 2.Ra7+, winning the rook. The latter check, 1...Rf1+ would be super annoying, so White needs to prevent this move from being made. He can do this with

1. Ka2!

And now, it's zugzwang. There is no safe square for Black's rook. For example:

1...Re8
2.Re7+

1... Ra8+
2.Ra7+

1...Rf2
2.Rg2+

1...Rg8
2.Rd7+ Rg7
3.Bxg7+

You get the idea.

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

It entirely depends on what kind of business it is and who your customers are. Internet presence - not spam, but good reviews and a simple website - can get you far, depending on your clientele.

I find the best results come from standing on the corner shaking daddy's little moneymaker for hundies in my undies, but your mileage may vary.

The all fall in three categories. Decent and I already have it or seen it. A maybe that I started watching like Merlin then abandoned because shit which had abandoned original story, and just plain PC shit.

That sounds like a pretty specialized field, is it? Like the sort of thing where someone would do up a contract instead of calling a number from a mailing. I'm not super familiar with it, though. At that level (assuming you're doing things like safety inspections and hydrological surveys for farmers or whatever), it might be better to show up in person with a quick intro and leave a business card and brochure or something.

On the other hand, Proceedings has been full of full-page ads for defense contractors and stuff since forever, so presumably it does work on some level, or they wouldn't bother. Or else there are people who leave the magazine open in conspicuous places around Christmas, hoping to find that Santa has left a big box from Bofors or LockMart under the tree.

#22 hogmartin Johnson is right - it depends on who your customers are. You've got to figure out who they are and what they are most likely to respond to. Some types just toss mailings, others may not.

And as previous mentioned, a good simple website is a must.

If worse comes to worse, start making cold calls. That's the worst form of sales you can do, in my opinion, highest rate of rejection, but you may get some contacts and be able to send some brochures out.

--i have yet to use Prime to watch movies. It's just been Man in the High Castle, Sneaky Pete, and The Americans for me so far. The free shipping is great but I have not used it for a while.

Things Netflix is not good at:
- Pulling the rug out from under you when you decide to re-watch that movie you liked 6 months ago and it's no longer available.
- Old movies (this may be the content owners' fault). Lots of good old stuff, but some of it is like hen's teeth. I've never seen The Caine Mutiny on ANY streaming service

Things Netflix is good at:
- Original content. Some of it is really good.
- Foreign stuff. Watch The Heavy Water War if you haven't already.
- Quirky stuff you wouldn't think you'd like. The Search for General Tso is a documentary about Chinese immigration and the evolution of American Chinese cuisine framed as a story about how General Tso's chicken came to be.
- TV shows. Yeah, Columbo got rotated off their list for whatever reason, but there are lots of good old shows still there.

We're currently watching a PBS documentary series on "Nazi Megaweapons". You'd think that such a series on that network it would be awash with PC crap, but I'm pleasantly surprised to discover that it isn't, at least not in the episodes we've seen so far.

--Agreed. While it's great to have a Big Bad, a sport is boring as hell when it's so dominated by one team, and women's basketball was not that much better when it was only UConn and Tennessee. If the product on the court is inferior, there should at least be parity. The men's game has both a lot more parity (even though there is an Upper Crust, it's several teams, not just one) and superior play.

Even the most degenerate gamblers don't bet on women's sports. Well, maybe roller derby.

disk that I would like to see. Not a single one of them is available on
Netflix except ones I have replaced with Blueray or DVD.

I bought a DVD recorder a while back and picked up another LD player off ebay. I have them hooked up through an older receiver and with a small old tube TV set for a monitor and have transfered the LDs to DVD. Also have done it for various things I have on tape. I've been recording video since the mid 70s and some things can't be had so I'll put up with the lesser VHS quality.

Not perfect but workable for me.

I have been uncannily fortunate with mother of the bride/ groom dresses. Got both at Macy's.

Last fall I shopped a variety of department stores for a dress to wear as a guest to two weddings. Every one looked like a cheap cocktail dress. Mutton dressed as lamb. In desperation, I went to Penney's which had an astonishing selection. I tried on a perfect dress. The tag said $199. Took it to the cashier-- it rang up as $22 including tax. Exquisite dress beautifully made.

Nah, I'm not the MOB or MOG and I don't want anything that looks like I am. I would love to find something that I can wear again (we occasionally have to go to black tie things, but usually in the winter - I have plenty of velvet!) and not have people think "oh look, bluebell's kid must have gotten married."

The only couple times we had a need for thermal imaging, we used a real plane and camera operator. I'm in the Atlanta area, and there are rental houses for anything video we need that is too expensive for a one off job. On the insurance, we don't go up within 5 miles of an airport.

146 Just spitballing here about something I know nothing about (which is technically my raison d'être), is there a nearby university or community college that has a fashion design program? Mom did some fashion design at Penn State years ago and my sister got a graphic arts degree from IUPUI, and from what I've heard, a lot of it was intern work. There are a lot of talented students who just need to log intern hours. Not sure if a dress is that sort of thing, but hey, can't hurt to ask around.

The FEN doesn't match the picture. If you go with the FEN, it is 2 moves to mate for white, and nothing black can do about it. His only move is forced. Unless white uses a less efficient attack, then its maybe 4 moves, and black has some choices to make.

Don't know about Julia, but come here, no closer, (quick 360 degree scan), Mrs. E probably can't wear her dress today. I wore my USN dinner mess dress blues and can still fit in. But then I've had cancer since we were married.

269 On the pro chess threads, there is a great deal of argument about that Penrose anti-computer problem. The task outlined in Penrose's original post is erroneously worded, first of all (it specifies that white must find a 'stalemate," not merely a draw -- which people think Penrose must have written in error, wince there is no stalemate. for white). But as for the "tricking black into blundering," that too is essentially impossible, if black simply puts his Bishop on c7 and then moved the other bishops at random -- white has no way to progress.

But ONE commenter seemed to have inside information that the posted position is NOT the original starting position, but instead is the SOLUTION position which Penrose may have accidentally posted. Supposedly, the actual position has a black knight on c6 and the white pawn is instead on d5, while there is a white queen on g3 and the black bishop is actually on h2. So the solution, forcing the draw, is 1. Pxc6!!! BxQ and only then does white move his king in circles for the draw. It is the move Pxc6!!! which the computers cannot see, because it sacrifices a queen for apparently no reason. (But of course the reason is to paralyze black in the long run, beyond the computer's "horizon effect.") The position, as given, is too trivial to be of interest.

BTW, as a sidenote: Penrose brother is an actual chess grandmaster, who should have caught the booboo -- a booboo which is mystifying people around the globe.

Well it's not Canada...with all the ice fishing and wife swapping....
But they do make some really good beer up there. Last time I visited family in WI I didn't even get to Leinenkugels but really liked Stevens Point Brewing and a couple local breweries in Wausau. Red Eye for sure.......great food and beer there!

During college and after I worked at Famous Barr (now Macy's) for 7 years. Started out pt in men's, then moved into mgmt. Houseware's was my favorite, but to be noticed and advance financially you had to manage in women's. Dress dept was OK but the money was in cosmetics. Highest profit center.

I had an SP101 for a few months once but it kept spitting debris back in my face when I fired it. I sent it back to Ruger and told them what it was doing, and they sent it back after about a month after replacing several parts, but it still spit crap back at me (I even shot my chrony because it had me flinching badly.).

I traded it off after that. Too bad. I liked the concept. It had the 4" barrel and was a good "kit" gun, but there are too many good guns out there to keep one that is defective.

288 I missed the chess thread, but looking at the AI problem, all White has to do is keep moving his king around on the white squares, and all Black can do is move his bishops. Eventually this will lead to a draw by the 50 move rule.

I just did this against my computer and it worked. The computer called the draw.

I just kept shuttling my king back and forth between d7 and c8, while Black parked one bishop at c7 and moved the other two around. Once it moved the c7 bishop to d6, but moved it back again a few moves later.

The only way I can see for White to win is if Black gets absent-minded and moves all his bishops off the h2-b8 diagonal when White's king is on d7. Then White can quickly push his pawn and checkmate the Black king.

It would be a mistake for White to push the pawn when it can be taken by a bishop. Then Black's king can move, breaking the logjam.

It's extremely rare for it to come up in an actual game. I suppose it was created in order to keep an obviously drawn game from being continued forever. What does a chess engine do with such a position, or any position for that matter? It ranks them starting with the first move. Any modern chess engine will find a mating line on any of the pawn moves as the first move, or any subsequent pawn by white- that isn't the difficult part for the chess engine. What you will see with this position is a ranking of the all the kings moves being ahead of all the pawn moves, but for an engine to decide this is a draw and read a zero edge for black, the chess engine has to calculate every single combination of white's king moves with the bishop moves so that every possible line is fully determined to be either a three-fold repetition at some point in time or the fifty move rule has established a draw- that is a deep, deep calculation, and probably takes a great deal of time, or great computation power that most chess engines don't actually have access to.

I then reloaded the position, but eliminated two of black's bishops, and the program reached the conclusion it was drawn within a couple of minutes.
