Billy Bob Thornton Quote II You know the actor John Garfield? In one movie he walked up to this train station, the ticket booth, and the guy says, 'Yes, where are you going?' And he says, 'I want a ticket to nowhere.' I thought: that's it. The freedom to do that. I want a ticket to nowhere. Wayne Shorter Quote III There is no doubt about precisely when folks began racing each other in automobiles. It was the day they built the second automobile. Richard PettyDid you stop by for educational links? Stimulating conversation? Soul searching questions? The meaning of life? NSFW Željava Air Base, situated on the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina under Plješevica Mountain, near the city of Bihać, Bosnia, was the largest underground airport and military air base in the former Yugoslavia, and one of the largest in Europe. During two decades more than £4 billion was spent on its construction. Well, 8 miles high is an airplane song, amirite? When you think of train songs do you think of Johnny Cash? Queen sure was in love with numerous things from cars to fat bottom girls. The DNC-Hacked!!!! Target-Hacked!!! Your Ford motorcar-Hacked????? Have you driven a Ford lately? It turns out that the motor company that promises “There’s a Ford in Your Future” — one that’s “Built for the Road Ahead” — might be on to something. What is Ford’s “Better Idea” that allows owners to “Go Further” (to quote some of its past slogans)? Well, the key to your Ford might just allow you easy access to Ford vehicles owned by other people. And the company strikes me as unruffled that its keys might open other vehicles across its product line. My truck is still so 20th Century. It even has a cassette deck. The longest prison sentences ever served. No, your failed marriage doesn't even come close. Richard Honeck (1879-1976), an American murderer, served what was, at the time, the longest prison sentence ever to end in a prisoner’s release. Jailed in November 1899 for the killing of a former school friend, Honeck was paroled from Menard Correctional Center in Chester, Illinois on 20 December 1963, having served 64 years and one month of his life sentence. In the decades between his conviction and the time his case came to public notice again in August 1963, he received only a single letter – a four-line note from his brother in June 1904 – and two visitors: a friend in 1904, and a newspaper reporter in 1963. There are no dumb questions when it comes to ammo. Good-bye Winter, hello Spring. Describe your boss. Hands-on? Aggressive? Fair? Honest? Weasel? Lazy? Why being lazy is a good thing as a manager. “Lazy” typically isn’t a word you’d like people to use when describing you, especially in the workplace. But guess what? Being lazy is a good thing! As a manager, you want to help your employees. And that’s great — until it isn’t. When an employee comes to you with a problem, your tendency may be to jump in and offer advice. While your intentions are noble, you may end up helping where it isn’t needed or taking over the conversation altogether. My boss has taken it to the next step. He doesn't respond. "Hey, why not have PLANES land on GIANT TREADMILLS!!!!!????"
Way back when Boeing was still proposing to get into the supersonic jet airliner business, their advanced projects research thinktank was going nuts trying to solve the range equation for the market that could really benefit, the Pacific. (The competing Concorde could manage a trans-Atlantic nonstop but not too much more than that. Even the nearest trans-Pacific destinations? No chance whatsoever.) Several different eggheads independently suggested catapult launch. Aircraft carrier style. Except with, y'know, an airliner carrying hundreds of passengers, with a max takeoff weight of 750,000 pounds. Noooooo problem! "Ladies and gentlemen, in preparation for the cat shot, please be sure your tray tables and your seat backs are in the fully upright and locked position, your parachute harnesses are snug, your helmet visors are down, and your ejection seat is properly armed. Posted by: Miley, the Duchess at March 19, 2017 10:25 PM (tHwdc) 135
I'm going to say no on the circular runway.
Because what happens when you're on approach and you overshoot even a little bit? Best case is you have to pull up and try again, as opposed to a real runway where you just land a little later. Also ever seen footage of cars going over the banking and through the railing at the older configuration of Daytona? That. So one circle can do the work of 4 real runways. What if you normally need more than 4? Or put another way, what happens when use of that airport grows to the point where a normal airport would expand and build one more runway? You can't just make your circle multilane, for the same reason we don't have superwide runways allowing multiple simultaneous adjacent takeoffs and landings from the same strip of tarmac today. Plus, all activity has to be in the outside lane as you otherwise have taxi-ing planes crossing the path of planes who are arriving/departing (i.e. are at high speeds). The main benefit of a circular runway also implies that you really only intend to do takeoffs and landings at two points (avoiding the side winds), which is really one (since you need lift, you want to take off into the wind, making the relative speed to the air larger than to the ground, I suspect you want the same for landings but don't remember). What happens when there's any kind of issue at all (doesn't have to be a crash, but anything that leaves a plane parked and surrounded by emergency vehicles)? Now your super circular runway which is three times the size of a normal runway becomes entirely useless. Oh, and snow removal. I haven't checked his math http://bit.ly/2mGpHoC
The law that tells us just how hot air rises is called Charles' Law. It states that the volume of a gas is proportional to the number of degrees above absolute zero the temperature is. If the outside air is 65 degrees, and the air in the balloon is 120 degrees, the air in the balloon is only 10% hotter in absolute terms. Air at 65 degrees weighs about 0.075 pounds per cubic foot. Inside the balloon it weighs only 0.067 pounds. The difference is 0.008 pounds per cubic foot. So to lift a 200 pound person, we will need 25,000 cubic feet of hot air. That's a cube 30 feet on a side, or a sphere 37 feet in diameter. Posted by: Grump928(C) at March 19, 2017 10:48 PM (LTHVh) 198

Roundabouts aren't just in one state. It's a national phenomenon, and it's not like the states to all go apeshit nuts at once without Federal "guidelines." Somebody somewhere got told they wouldn't get their gas tax back if they didn't do this. Perhaps some bold investigative reporter could find the actual verbiage, hidden in some policy statement or executive order? It's crazy.
If you're building one out in the sticks on land already owned by The King, hey, go nuts. But even in a suburb, you're taking out acres and acres of real estate to change over. If you're lucky, that's just somebody's lawn (that made up 35% of their house purchase value and 90% of its curb appeal). In a dense suburb or a city, people lose their houses. Some people enjoy hell out of losing their houses. And then once in a while somebody from the state eminent domaining agency gets garrotted. Good fences are f'ing expensive. We are about to replace our wooden privacy fence and the prices quoted make me choke. Really don't have a choice since everything is rotting. The original builders grade stuff was untreated. We are going with galvanized post and 6" wide 3/4" thick western cedar. We shouldn't ever have to replace anything again.

I've done jury duty once. Local teenager was bugged by a couple of guys in school to get them some mushrooms. They wanted to get high. So he gave them some, aka "trafficking". They got sick and one told his dad what happened. Kid was charged with trafficking psilocybin. Defense attorney pointed out that the tox tests were inconclusive. But most of the jury was ready to convict, except for me and a guy that had some experience with mushrooms. He convinced them that it was a rite of passage for some of the local kids and there was no proof it was an illegal substance. We got him off.
I saw him in the car with his mom after I was done. I had him roll down the window. I told him "you don't know how close you came to going to jail. Don't ever do anything that stupid again." He said he wouldn't and I hope he didn't. He seemed like a decent kid. Posted by: Notsothoreau at March 19, 2017 11:20 PM (Lqy/e) 274

Dunno if this was discussed previously, but saw this in a Reuters article about Mexicans immigrants flooding Canada:
"The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) said it detained 444 Mexican nationals between Jan. 1 and March 8, compared with 410 for all of 2016, 351 for 2015, and 399 for 2014. The CBSA can detain foreign nationals if it is believed they pose a danger to the public, if their identity is unclear or if they are deemed unlikely to appear for removal or for a proceeding. The number of Mexicans turned back at the airport has risen, too - to 313 in January, more than any January since 2012 and more than the annual totals for 2012, 2013 and 2014." Snowbama's a heartless bastid racist then. But he's like ever so dreamy, so he gets the Che exemption I guess. 138 I almost feel sorry for that murderer who went in the pokey in 1899 and was released in '63. He came out into an entirely different universe than the one that existed in the 19th century. Imagine learning to cope with all this new-fangled stuff that you're being exposed to for the first time when you are old.
It's possible he was a complete rat bastard, so my sympathy is limited. But murdering a school friend, although terrible - well, there were people who have done much much worse and didn't serve a fraction of the time that guy did. 200 Roundabouts aren't just in one state.
Posted by: Stringer Davis at March 19, 2017 10:50 PM (H5rtT) Some people in my neighborhood wanted make an intersection a 4 way stop. The city wouldn't do it because they go by "Federal guidelines" to make these decisions. I'm guessing the Feds want to stop putting up stoplights every where and decided that roundabouts are the best way to deal with intersections. The circular runway won't work. You can't use a generic bank angle for planes that will be going anywhere from 0 to 200 knots. If a multi engine plane loses an engine on takeoff, keeping runway centerline will be impossible. Since the relative wind direction is changing as you go around the circle, the pilot would have to figure worst case crosswind and tailwind for every takeoff/ landing. And the simultaneous takeoff/ landing operations is b.s. It would never be allowed.

Called to jury duty twice and got preemptively ashcanned by the defense when my NRA membership was made known (best $35 ever spent.) Third time I got empaneled on a he said, she said with no violence or corroborated evidence and three of us hung that empaneled jury. After the judge mistrialed the prosecutor buttonholed us in the waiting room and grilled us about what made us vote not guilty. I said lack of independent, uninvolved third party evidence and they got a confused look.
The scary part was the discussion during deliberations. Several persons fabricated evidence out of thin air (well this must have happened because it is most likely) and when called on it, said they were sure it happened the way they thought it did. It scared the hell out of me and now I think if it happens to me a trial by judge may give me better acquittal odds. Posted by: Headless Body of Agnew at March 20, 2017 12:40 AM (FtrY1) 389

I am going to buy a 97 GMC Jimmy, stick transmission.
I can't tell if the noise is from a loose heat shield vibrating to the idling engine or if it is something in the transmission. How big of a mistake am I about to make at $1200? Posted by: Kindltot at March 19, 2017 10:19 PM (WQX/u) If the noise originates in the transmission, and is heard at idle only, and in neutral, it might be the input shaft bearing, or the roller bearings on the countershaft. Also possibly the clutch throwout bearing. With the engine idling, press your ear against the knob on the shift lever. If the noise originates in the transmission, you should hear it loudly that way. A loose heat shield, more likely to be loudest heard with the engine hood open, or from beneath the vehicle. Some models of Jimmy required that the engine be removed to work on the clutch or transmission. Look up the "flat-rate time" for clutch replacement for that model. If it shows about 12 hours, assume that engine removal is required. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at March 20, 2017 12:43 AM (WDdjT) 391

If anyone really wants to get in a house there isn't really anything you can do. Going in through windows is about as easy as it comes - boarded up or not. And they can always just make bump keys and walk right through the front door (though many alarm systems make going through windows a better plan). Wait, vapor lock is a real thing?
I only ever heard of it on that Joe Namath episode of The Simpsons. Criminally, none of this is mentioned under the wikipedia entry for "vapor lock". Posted by: who writes this shit anyway? at March 20, 2017 01:41 AM (wpC7C) Heh. It really is a thing, and older cars, with carburetors, and mechanical fuel pumps on the engine block, are particularly susceptible when obliged to run on modern "fuel". Modern fuel, especially that Now the fuel pump will still move the vapor, but not efficiently, and the vapor, even recondensed to liquid on the pressure side, doesn't add up to enough volume of liquid fuel to meet the engine's demands. So I was cruising down the 202 freeway at about 65 mph, and the car just slowed down. Press down on the accelerator, and the engine makes that sort of gasping sound that indicates fuel starvation, and it slows down even more abruptly. Let up on the accelerator, and the engine resumes running, but as the vapor lock progresses, it will only sustain running at increasingly slower speeds. So I bailed off the freeway, and made it back by way of surface streets at about 40 mph. If I had gotten stuck in a traffic jam, the engine probably would have vapor-locked badly enough to quit outright. The sure cure for this problem is to ditch the mechanical fuel pump, and mount an electrical pump of the proper pressure/volume rating back near the tank. That way, the column of fuel between the tank and the engine is under slight pressure, not suction, and its boiling point is raised, not lowered. All modern cars have high-pressure electrical pumps inside the tank, and are not subject to vapor lock, which means the fuel sellers don't have to worry so much about vapor pressure. Posted by: gNewt at March 20, 2017 02:11 AM (zFzxj) That is absolutely true in the case of an in-tank fuel pump. Now, a few cars with mechanical pumps on the engine, they added a small "Tee" on the outlet line, with a restriction in the one leg that fed a return line to the tank. So there was a constant small circulation of fuel through the pump to cool it, with enough capacity still on tap to meet demands of the engine. re: Jury Duty
I've served on juries twice, once a criminal trial through to conviction and one a 'special' grand jury which met Tuesdays and Thursdays for 6 months; regular grand jury duty is daily for one month. The special grand jury was for conspiracy cases and the like, not regular street crime. One case, after indictment, made the papers, a car theft ring. We only no-billed one case, so that whole 'the grand jury is the last barrier to judicial overreach' is just so much hogwash. My takeaway from serving on that criminal trial is if one is ever in court on trial, do not go with a jury of one's peers; take a bench trial. That criminal jury I was on had an honest-to-goodness mentally deficient person seated, as the pool was so thinned by the time of the last voir dire batch that both attorneys were pretty much stuck. Deliberations were 'interesting'. Thankfully, the guy was convicted on 5 felony counts and probably got 25-to-Life, though I was never made aware of the sentence. But after the trial was over, the judge came to speak with us. It was then we found out the defendant was on parole at the time he shot at two people, hitting one in the arm and the other in the ass (we got to see the pictures; what joy). Being on jury duty is akin to watching sausage being made: You don't ever want to eat sausage again. Posted by: RickZ at March 20, 2017 02:42 AM (L0PQJ) 435

One of my all time favorite guitarists Posted by: teej at March 20, 2017 04:42 AM (6CZio) 'Ten Years After Recorded Live', a double album, is one of the best showcases of Alvin Lee. His version of 'Help Me' on that album is simply untouchable. TYA gets no respect these days. I was surprised to find out their 'I'd Love To Change The World' is no longer played because of the 'Everywhere is freaks and hairies; Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity' lyrics. It would be to laugh if it weren't so maddening. TYA is one of those bands I most regret not ever having seen live. Posted by: RickZ at March 20, 2017 04:55 AM (L0PQJ) Posted by: m at March 20, 2017 05:07 AM (3jGss) 458
I saw TYA once and Alvin doing a trio thing twice.
One of those at the Vogue Theater in Indy. No one on the dance floor and so I walked up to the stage and stood right in front of Mr Lee, less than ten feet away, for a few songs. Damn. Just, damn. Was tough to tear myself away and go back to the table with the first witch and couple of coworkers. Posted by: teej at March 20, 2017 05:09 AM (6CZio) 459
Ya caught it m.
He throws that kind of stuff into a number of songs. Posted by: teej at March 20, 2017 05:11 AM (6CZio) 460
come ride the little train
that is rolling down the tracks to the junction. lotsa curves, you bet even more, when you get to the junction. (petticoat junction) there's a little hotel called the shady rest at the junction. it is run by kate come and be her guest at the junction. and there's uncle joe he's moving kinda slow at the junction. (petticoat junction) all aboard! Oh I see it coming already.
Billie Jo, Bobby Jo or Betty Jo? Once again, the answer is yes. Only one? Meanie. Bobby Jo Posted by: teej at March 20, 2017 05:16 AM (6CZio) 464
teej, I bought an Alvin Lee double live album decades ago called 'In Flight'. Hard as hell to find anymore. I especially enjoy his 'You Need Love Love Love' from that album. Lots of sax in that one. There's even his version of 'Mystery Train' on it, to keep the theme going.
The other band I most regret never having seen live is Humble Pie. I've seen a ton of others, some twice (CSN&Y and Stephen Stills solo, e.g.). I saw Foghat before they hit it big with 'Slow Ride', a song I absolutely detest; they opened for Mountain with Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi. One band I am most grateful to have seen live is Little Feet with Lowell George on their 'Time Loves A Hero' tour, but they played a lot from 'The Last Record Album', another favorite album of mine. What a great show. The audience booed the opener off the stage. The opener was Bonnie Raitt. Thanks Rick, like me you've been fortunate to see some great ones and unfortunately, miss some too.
I've never had a time in life where spending much money on albums or even a decent stereo was an option. Don't know the In Flight album. I blame radio. And yeah, Humble Pie had a fair to middlin' guitarist as I remember too. Posted by: teej at March 20, 2017 05:33 AM (6CZio) 466
I gotta get. There's a thing in the building where you buy donuts for everyone one day per year and today is my day so gotta leave early.
Have a good one. Posted by: teej at March 20, 2017 05:43 AM (6CZio) 467
teej, I even liked Humble Pie post Frampton, specifically 'Smokin'', a must-have in any collection. I also think their album cover for 'Thunderbox' is a winner, too. The song 'Thunderbox' is an earlier 'Squeeze Box' by The Who.
Maybe the next ONT can have songs about women's hoohas. I've already started the list with two songs. Posted by: RickZ at March 20, 2017 05:43 AM (L0PQJ) Posted by: WhatWhatWhat? at March 20, 2017 05:55 AM (ul9CR) 469

according to wikipedia, the foiled shots of the "hooterville cannonball" on petticoat junction were shots of a train called :"sierra no. 3", which has been in more movies than any other locomotive.
its first appearance was in "the virginian" with gary cooper (1929) and more recently was the engine in "back to the future III". it's still operational and can be found at rail town 1897 state park, jamestown, cal. Posted by: musical jolly chimp at March 20, 2017 06:18 AM (WTSFk) 472
not "foiled shots" but filmed shots, damn splchk. again.

it was also in a couple of eastwood flicks, "pale rider" and "unforgiven". it had an appearance in "high noon". dozens of movies and tv shows. Posted by: musical jolly chimp at March 20, 2017 06:31 AM (WTSFk) 477
