The wing idea could be an adoption of Mesopotamian imagery. Winged also appear in descriptions of the angels on the Ark of the Covenant and Tabernacle, and in descriptions of the Cherubim that guard the Throne of God.
Winged angels also appear in some of the earliest Christian art.

The Byzantines tried to depict these creatures. There is an interesting illuminated manuscript that shows the Ascension of Christ that uses imagery from Ezekiel. An then there is the Book of Revelations that drips with Old Testament references.

Short version: What the HELL Warner Brothers/DC?
Long version: I finally understand all the complaints about this movie. There WAS a good movie buried in there at some point but it was butchered beyond all comprehension.
To get it out of the way, that 'Matha' scene the internet has been making fun of since it happened, yeah that was so bad everyone involved in that scene's approval and design had to be on drugs.
It MAYBE could have worked if we actually had a Batman backstory movie focused solely on his love of his mother and what she meant to him, but no. We get a scene of him walking to a tomb and looking at a grave. *sigh*
Which brings up one of the two biggest problems with the movie.
It tried to be THREE movies in one, solely in an attempt to catch up to the MCU. This was MoS 2, Batman vs. Superman, AND Justice League prologue.
Pick one WB, just pick one. Lay out your backstory and characters a la MCU phase 1. But no, we get a haphazard mess. Personally my favorite parts were the JL intro parts, but they were SO out of place.
The other major problem? No charisma what so damn ever. Almost every single MCU actor exudes their character and brings them to life in such a short period of time.
BvS characters? Bland, boring, brooding and miserable. Bleh.
The only character I felt was actually unique was one so many people seem to hate. But Lex Luthor is the only character who had a personality brought to life and who, if you were reading a script with no names, you could immediately identify his lines.
If Superman, Batman and WW all were vaporized I would have felt nothing. It's fascinating that this movie was so wrong, but maybe Marvel has me spoiled. (Even with their clunkers.)

I watched "Burn After Reading" recently, an apparently underappreciated Coen brothers gem.

I watched "Burn After Reading" recently, an apparently underappreciated Coen brothers gem.
Everyone in it is damn near perfect. As much as people hate
Clooney, he's always been great in the Coen brothers films he's been in.
Everyone, honestly, a bunch of freakin' pros, just hamming it up and having fun.
Great movie.

I usually cannot stand Hollywood movies about Hollywood movies or movie making - however this film captures the spirit of the golden age of Hollywood and is at once an homage to (old good) Hollywood but is anti (the sliminess of modern) Hollywood AND anti communism - and the movie also succeeds in being very pro catholic at the same time! ( Brolin's performance as the devout catholic Hollywood "fixer" trapped in the den of sinful iniquity that is Hollywood is absolutely sublime). And the subtle satire of Ben Hur is spot on. Truly a great film - see it if you haven't yet horde!

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm really working on catching up with their output.
I think a case could be made that their films are subversively conservative. I haven't really thought it through too much, but there always seems to be an undercurrent of morality running through.

That conservative case can definitely be made for many of their films ( I have loved them since Raising Arizona and Millers Crossing, btw) - but in this instance there is nothing subversive or subtle about the conservative message in Hail Caesar - as Blackadder said "[It's] about as subtle as a rhinoceros horn up the backside."

.There is no intention of every paying the National Debt off by either Party. At this point it is physically impossible, and the Fed is making sure we have a crisis within the next few years by raising interest rates and Trump will get the blame.
I used to care about the debt but after more than a few years of reading various articles and journals I have come to the conclusion that we are heading for a huge crash no matter what we do.
When the bills come due for over promising Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid starting in the next few years we are most likely going to see an economic set back the likes of which has not been seen in this Country before.
We have over $120 Trillion in unfunded mandatory spending coming due over the next 50 years and that will just keep growing no matter what Trump does with the budget. Social Security benefits will have to be actually cut in the very near future as we are now paying out more in benefits than we are taking in. By 2030 or so even the lie of the lock box will be out of money and that will happen most likely sooner.
What is coming will make the crash of 1929 look like a slight adjustment.

The Bible doesn't say how old Joseph was. He was dead by the time of the crucifixion at the very least, otherwise Jesus wouldn't have told John to look after Mary, so the assumption has often been that he was older. Men waiting until they were established in their careers and then marrying much younger wives wasn't unusual either.

It may not have anything to do with historical accuracy, but in Italy, especially Southern Italy, it's part of the popular lore/folk culture. There are even children's nursery rhymes and folk songs describing St Joseph as an old man. Even his statues in Italian churches depict him as a fairly old gent.

The main issue (as I see it) is mounting debt with no realistic plan to address it or grow our way out of it. Interest payments on that debt are accelerating in volume and will require loads of taxes to service.
Another point is the sheer volume of transfer payments happening. These things promote idleness, and foster a sense of entitlement over not having to work, or to do the bare minimum required. Incentives to do better are squashed.
Lastly, our arsenal of tools that can mitigate recessions (adjusting the money supply, etc) are limited in scope. Over the past ten years (and beyond, if you're more of a gold bug than I am) have shown their limitations. For a standard recession, a money supply adjustment is helpful...but that's after a bunch of assumptions that in the here and now aren't valid. Assumptions that unemployed people WANT to work, WANT to do better, and WANT to strive have become invalidated in the face of a large and robust welfare state.
So I have no optimism for the future economy. It won't be overnight, but the long slow slide continues, and there's no good way out of it.

Do we know how many of these are legal vs. illegal immigrants?
Regardless, think of the savings of not providing 2-3 meals a day to ~25% or more (considering it's not 100% immigrant/lots of citizens' kids partake, too) of public school kids? One assumes that a lot of these families are already enrolled in SNAP and/or receiving other private charity food subsidies...

Not really. People forget that the "average age" is just that - a mathematical average. The low average age in earlier generations comes from the early years, not so much the later years. Many people died in the first few years of life - childhood diseases & such - which makes that average age so much lower than the average of today. Granted, medical advances means people are living longer today than in the past, but someone in their 50s wasn't elderly.

I would add that the Fed has yet to even to begin to unwind its massive, nearly $5 trillion balance sheet. They liked to claim that they could do that with no effect on the economy but only the dimmest among us would even entertain such a preposterous idea. The pain that will come with the unwinding will be far worse than any minor benefits we got in accumulating that balance sheet.

Well I can certainly be an asshole, and not the sharpest knife in the drawer and well looks aren't the thing and yet she is smart and sweet and hot so yeah believe me for everyone here there is. one thing maybe. I fell hard and went from zero to engaged in 6 weeks. And I was in Tampa and she in MN. So like 3 real dates. She must have been weak and I was quick to close.

It's much more complex than that thanks to birthright citizenship and the fact that we've spent the last 25 years letting illegals (border-crossers and visa-overstays) stay long enough to have kids.
So you have illegal parents with some potential mix of legal and illegal kids.
In California the total K12 immigrant-family mix was listed as 43%, of which I'd assume (whatever the citizenship and status of the kids) around half have one or more illegal parents.

Judicial lawlessness didn't start last month. It's been ravaging the country for decades, with a (big) hand in many of the country's greatest problems. But this is qualitatively new territory.
They have nibbled at the edges before. Hamdan v. Bush (Gitmo military commissions procedures) usurped the treaty power and brazenly encroached on the president's national defense responsibilities.
But this latest chapter is nothing more than seizing control of policy matters that lie entirely, and indisputably, within the president's purview, and which are specifically so per statute and the constitution.
Impeachment of judges is irrelevant and impractical, splitting up the 9th is irrelevant and besides the point in any case.
Trump and Sessions have their Pearl Harbor or 9/11 moment. They didn't seek or plan for it. But it will be the most important thing they deal with.
I seriously doubt they have the courage or wisdom to do the hard thing and the right thing. The legal community is 90% brain-dead when it comes to such matters, can only imagine deference to courts, which was always a lazy and thoughtless approach but under the circumstances has become dangerously stupid.

Trump and Sessions have their Pearl Harbor or 9/11 moment. They didn't seek or plan for it. But it will be the most important thing they deal with.

Maybe if you mean creating a new jurisdiction and delegating the judicial authority to separate courts. If the committee comes to a Judgement of Solomon solution, that might be more effective. Just have to wait and see what they come up with.

It's not about these judges personally or individually. It's about their lawless actions, and the fact such lawlessness (and the mindset under it) are acceptable to the judiciary and deferred to by the executive and Congress.
Apparently Hinderaker over at PowerLine is breaking with standard legal community unseriousness on this topic, and saying repudiation of the court is the only option (and the president's actual duty, under the constitution). Which I think is absolutely correct - if only because no other options come to mind.
One reason I've been hoping for some more outrageous judicial usurpations, and on other policies, and right away. Once the collapsed judicial system bum-rushes Trump on several of his most important policies (without a shred of legal or constitutional rationale, as in this case), it MIGHT be enough to make Trump and Sessions and others realize - this is it. This is the whole ball game.
No tanks in the streets, no mass detentions. But seems almost nobody realizes that, in a system like ours (historically unique or close to it), where in fact rule of law was real, and courts earned their distinctive role, a lawless judiciary *is* chaos, it *is* constitutional dissolution. Because a branch that was accorded possibly unwise latitude is abusing it to effectively take over the country.
Rewording an EO, or even mocking the latest absurd ruling or focusing on how it would play out under a different president, entirely miss the point. Courts have literally inserted themselves into policy-making, contrary to the law and constitution - that's the point. And *effectively* negating that chaotic attack on the rule of law is the only solution, anything else just gets us more (much more) of the same.

For starters, he should defund all refugee resettlement programs, stop or s-l-o-w down the processing of entry request, etc. That doesn't address the authority that the courts stripped from the president, but it at least addresses the intent of the EO while they're working on a more direct response to this challenge.

It's the cut Snyder wanted released in theaters. The studio made him cut it down.
I know that the tonal stuff won't change between the cuts. And if you don't like Affleck as Batman, that won't change with this.
It mostly makes some plot and character stuff clearer.
I enjoy the movie a fair bit, but it's still so flawed that I don't feel like investing the energy to defend it in the actual movie thread.
Still, though, the "Martha" crap is there. I will say this in that point's defense: Batman was not going to be reasoned out of his hatred of Superman because it wasn't reason that got him to that spot, but emotion. He had to have an emotional jolt to get him to change his mind. "Martha" feels like a first draft placeholder solution that never got addressed in any subsequent drafts (if there were any).

This is turning into an issue of class warfare, but it's not the one they're always looking for (though, perhaps ironically, it certainly is an issue of those who have power and those who don't).

As I understood it-- and I could very well be VERY wrong-- on a high enough level, if you're disbarred, you can't be a judge anymore. Or perhaps more accurately, you can be a judge but not preside over cases.
That was my thinking.
As for it not being about them personally... I think it is. They are legislating from the bench, which is not their job. They are deciding to put out these insane rulings. So they need to be taken out to the woodshed and made an example of. Enough examples might change everyones opinions.

All these options to avoid the issue make no sense. You have to confront the issue.
A court acting outside the law, and specifically usurping the clear statutory and constitutional duties of another branch, has no authority in those matters.

I didn't mind Affleck at Batman as much as a lot of the rest of the cast, it was more the utter lack of backstory and motivation for actions. Just could have been explained and portrayed so much better. (The Martha scene screws so much of his character in the movie too.)
I still can't entirely decide if I'm being too harsh on the movie because of the iconic characters and comparisons to other superhero movies.
Part of me thinks if this was a non comic book blank slate movie and not based on exisiting IPs, I'd be a lot more forgiving. Still don't think I'd be a fan, but it wouldn't be a 'Oh damn what are you doing to your universe' type of reaction.
