Pre-ONT Open Thread

Here's a story that you might want to talk about: The claim that in October 2016, Hannity pointed an (unloaded) gun on Juan Williams and even lit him up with the gun's laser-sight.

Last year, after ending one of his many spirited on-air arguments with liberal contributor Juan Williams, Hannity pulled out a gun and pointed it directly at Williams, according to three sources with knowledge of the incident. He even turned on the laser sight, causing a red dot to bob around on Williams' body. (Hannity was just showing off, the sources said, but the unforeseen off-camera antic clearly disturbed Williams and others on set.)

For the record: Hannity's colleagues brought the Williams incident to the attention of Fox News executives, though it's not clear whether anything came of it....

The Fox News spokesperson also provided the following statements from Hannity and Williams.

"While discussing the issue of firearms, I showed my good friend Juan Williams my unloaded firearm in a professional and safe manner for educational purposes only," Hannity's statement read. "Every precautionary procedure that I have been trained in since the age of 11 was followed. I've had a conceal carry permit in five states for all of my adult life. Any other interpretation of this is outright false reporting."

"This incident is being sensationalized -- everything was under total control throughout and I never felt like I was put in harm's way," Williams' statement read. "It was clear that Sean put my safety and security above all else and we continue to be great friends."

I'm sure that Hannity didn't put Williams' in danger, though I guess it is possible that Hannity handled it in a way that would alarm a gun-fearing liberal. (And the three people who talked to Byers may well be gun-fearing liberals themselves; most people that work at Fox are in fact liberals.)

This kind of sounds like bullshit to me, but what do I know. I can see a gun owner trying to explain to a gun-fearing liberal that "guns don't work the way you say" and trying to show them, and then the liberal going "OH MY GOD A GUN!!!"

But it is a weapon, and people don't like seeing weapons in the wrong context or handled sloppily. Go to any gun range and commit any Gun Fault and just wait for the shouts to come pouring in.

Yeah, I know, I was wrong, and yeah, they were right (I think I carried my gun not quite pointed directly at the ground when moving to another station), but man, did I get an earful.

Now I always carry the gun with the barrel pointed directly under my chin, Martin Riggs style, just to show everyone how cautious and cool-tempered I am.

4 ACE - good piece about OMB. On the broader points of that post, I think the differential split between what we thought the political stripes Trump walks in pre-election and what he's shown so far is that we were viewing him from the usual political lenses that we've used for all other regular politicians.

Politics is in itself a professional enterprise, just as much as your common small business.

Many people here right now reside in the latter (myself included).

It is here that we view coworkers at our regular business office by a set of principles custom to that office environment. Behavior, communication, decision-making, and work results are established to a certain normal standard. Their daily focus is to succeed in that arena. We get our news, politics, sports, on social media, tv, radio, AoS and other internet sites.

Trump is private businessman - real-estate, entertainment, private label retail. He plays in these waters, and knows how to please this audience to get things done to further his professional aspirations. He's successful due to mastering the skills and actions to be successful in that arena. His daily focus is to succeed in that arena. Pre-candidate Trump used to get his info from the same places. President Trump gets info from these same places plus his advisors.

Same can be said for the politician - their focus and business is politics. Their office watercooler includes think tanks, lobbyists, interest groups, aids, etc. They get their info that sect.

I think this shared commonality of having the majority of their focus not being on politics, but obtaining info the same sources is key to differentiate why he won. A lot had to do with platform and his anti-MSM fighting spirit early on, but the shared news and info sources between voters and Trump was the same as well. That is powerful. It was just a business guy that knows his customers well - a task made easier because they are linked by where they get their info. He spoke their language, and reacted in the same way they would react. Condition by the same standards both hold professionally and personally (ok maybe, very loosely here).

It was the shared ability to connect with voters in a way not as voter-representative, but as employee-employer or customer-salesman that resounded. I know that is how I slowly turned toward supporting him. I like winners, and have and want to work for CEOs that are successful, and that understand the delicate balance of the two.

Sorry short on time - Politicians on the other hand live in their own special echo chamber habitat. Less connection.

So in summary - I agree with your good piece. Nice touch on the Right Wing Radio (info source)- very salient and sound description.

I think going forward we should expect (ceteris paribus) Trump to stay in sync with conducting his admin more of less in the same fashion in response to what these shared info resources dictate.

--Also, it could be Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs take turns being behind the wheel of the Trump Vessel, because they found that secret portal in Trump Tower like in 'Being John Malkovich'.

Steve Bannon is Orson Bean's character.

(2) Tell you NEVER to point one at someone, unless you intend to follow through and shoot them?????

43 I missed commenting on the Columbo thread from a couple of days ago so ...

1) There was some confusion about when Columbo ran. Some people seemed to think it ran for 20 years straight but they only re-ran episodes from the 70s. In fact, Columbo's first run was on NBC from 1971 to 1978 and then it was resurrected on ABC from 1989 through 2003, with only specials from 1991-2003. I remember as a teenager getting hooked on Columbo reruns and then being very excited about ABC resurrecting the series, but I hated the ABC resurrection. I felt like the writing was much worse and that they exaggerated all of the character's idiosyncrasies. In the NBC version, Columbo acted a bit like a disjointed idiot but it was clearly an act. In the ABC series, it wasn't so much of an act.
2) I think the episode Ace was thinking about where Columbo let the muderess go was one where the murderess was an elderly former actress/dancer who performed in musicals on film and sung and danced. She committed the murder but also had dementia and it became clear she didn't actually remember committing it. One of her friends/admirers took the fall and she got very upset at him because she didn't remember that she actually committed the murder. Now Im going to look it up and see if my memory is correct or not.

62 Yep, I remembered correctly about the Columbo episode. I just forgot that the murderess was dying of whatever brain illness she had which is why her admirer was willing to "confess", knowing that once she died he would be let go anyway since Columbo knew the truth.

32 1 "Forgotten Lady" Harvey Hart William Driskill 92 minutes September 14, 1975
When elderly physician Henry Willis (Sam Jaffe) refuses to finance a return to the spotlight for his wife, aging former movie star Grace Wheeler (Janet Leigh) kills him in his sleep, passing it off as a suicide. The elderly butler (Maurice Evans) believes Grace was in a private screening room the entire time, watching one of her classic films. This is the only episode where the murderer is not arrested, as Ned Diamond (John Payne), her longtime song and dance partner, falsely confesses to save Grace, after Columbo points out to him that she is dying of a brain disease, ironically the reason her husband refused to finance her return, and doesn't even remember the murder. Columbo has no choice but to arrest Diamond, both realizing that by the time he is cleared, Grace will have died after spending her last days living happily in the past. The episode features excerpts from the 1953 musical comedy Walking My Baby Back Home, which starred Leigh. (This is the movie that was playing when she was committing the crime.)

104 The only reason to handle a confirmed unloaded gun as if it was loaded is to reinforce proper handling when it has not been confirmed. Otherwise it would be similar to Anti-gun people's belief that a gun is some type of sentient being. It's just a hunk of metal when it's unloaded. Of course the reply is that 'unloaded' guns have been known to fire frequently. I've just seen some people go overboard and get uncomfortable even when it has the cable lock on it.

Regrading what *actually* happened, I don't know, so I can't comment with too much wisdom. If Hannity pulled out his unloaded weapon on an unaware Juan, then that is obviously wrong. If they planned this ahead of time and the gun was inspected by Juan and never left his sight, then to me, it's a 'meh'.

Anything in between would put me on a sliding scale from livid to irritated.

Anyway, he had some lab mates over. Most of them were from countries where guns were outlawed, so they had never handled them before. You get the standard safety talk before start shooting. One of the yahoos swings 180 muzzling the ENTIRE FIRING LINE with what was at least possibly (given that we were shooting) a loaded gun. I think the moron wanted a picture of himself holding it out off his hip.

134 When D'oh Boy left here to go back to his sea base after A-stan, he was treated like the worst common criminal by no less than Savannah's TSA.

First Ilsa the She Wolf demanded to know why he wasn't traveling in uniform, and he kindly explained to her that Marines can only travel in any uniform when they're with their unit.

She wasn't impressed and told him, "Well, if you were in uniform, things here would go a lot more smoothly for you."

He went into the nude scanner, came out the other side and was met with a full body pat-down, and had his hands swabbed for explosives. He was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops.

They went through his Marine Corp(se) backpack like he was carrying heroin. It contained his i-Pad, and a change of underwear.

We walked him to his gate (after *I* was given the full rapey pat-down, as per usual), and he was pissed. "I can't believe I fought...." etc. They announced the military could board, and as he approached the boarding area, he was pulled out of line AGAIN by two TSA goons who went through his sad little backpack one more time.

Don't take it personally Ace. The rules are strict because there are fricking idiots out there, and even the best can get complacent. It's actually somewhat amazing accidental shootings are as low as they are. I suppose even the "hold my beer" set realize at some level a boo boo can be a very bad thing.

But stories of negligent discharges show how once in a hundred or several hundred times something glitches. You mind glitches and you think you did X but you did not, or you were distracted and did Y without realizing it.

We used to clean weapons in the military all the time and I'm sure the muzzle swept people all the time, but no finger on the trigger pow pow stuff. Well, except for the funny photo I have of me holding a fellow trainee hands up with a .50 cal.

There was an older dude there, maybe in his 40s, looking at handguns. He takes the gun he's holding, I think it was a Colt Python .357, points it at my head from about 5' away, and cracks a smile. I wasn't really afraid, but I had taken a hunter's safety course and I knew that that was a big F'n no-no. I didn't say or do anything, being 12 years old and all. But the clerk should have kicked that guy's sorry ass out of the store. Of course the clerk was just a pimply teen maybe 5 years my senior so he probably just wanted to get a gun sale under his belt. 238 It almost certainly didn't happen the way it's portrayed by the witnesses. can't imagine an experienced, responsible gun owner intentionally pointing the muzzle of his weapon at someone in a joking manner, ever.

1. All guns are loaded. I was taught this in childhood. One day when I was 14 or so I was shooting trap with my brother and brought the barrel around and inadvertently passed it across my brother. My Stepfather grounded me for a month and I was stuck with every shit-job on the farm for weeks afterwards. That lesson was driven down to the bone.

Hannity didn't do it--or at least I can't imagine him being that reckless and stupid.

240 This thread reminds me of a quote from Mark Twain. A book on flintlocks by Eric Bye (excellent book by the way) started the safety chapter with it.

"Don't meddle with old unloaded firearms. They are the most deadly and unerring things that have ever been created by man. You don't have to take any pains at all with them; you don't have to have a rest, you don't have to have any sights on the gun, you don't have to take aim, even. No, you just pick out a relative and bang away, and you are sure to get him. A youth who can't hit a cathedral at thirty yards with a Gatling gun in three-quarters of an hour, can take up an old empty musket and bag his mother every time at a hundred."

What I wouldn't give to hear Tucker ask one of these progs this exact question.

Posted by: Infidel at March 16, 2017 09:11 PM (uKRys)

242 Years ago, I was scared of guns. Then, after 9/11, I bought one. It was part of my "coping mechanism"/reaction to what happened. I bought it, put it and a lot of bullets in a box, and did... nothing.

Then, four years back, I decided I needed to actually OH I DONT KNOW "learn how to use a gun." I took a training class, with my 16 year old son, and I was... nervous as hell. I was scared, I was unsure, and I ended up less nervous than I did the two hours before. But not by much.

My teen age son, however, was the opposite. He took to it, instantly. No fear, and absolute respect of the weapon. Then he got the Gun Bug.

He started looking into rifles. He bought a Mosin Nagant at a gun show, and I went to shoot it with him. And then... Something clicked.

I was responsible, I knew to be the master of the weapon, not let it master me. It was a tool, like others... but one I should and could be in charge of. Like a car, or a chainsaw. Respect, not fear.

My son now has three rifles, and I own three handguns and a rifle, and I am a card-carrying member of the NRA. I've also talked to colleagues about their gun thoughts and as I am surrounded by liberals the reactions I've gotten have been... interesting.

Hannity was being unserious, and that is the main point for why he should be criticized - I now cringe when I see any scene on a movie or TV show when someone has their finger on a trigger when they are walking or not aimed at a person. My husband grew up in a liberal, gun-hating family.

When my dear Dad died, he left his entire gun collection to us, and my husband couldn't get rid of them fast enough. Our son was five, and my husband was skeered.

Son goes into the Marines, gets out, comes home, buys guns, and drags his dad to the range.

Happy ending, husband loves and respects guns, and cannot get enough time at the range.

267 What's the argument on that? There might be a pocked of unfired powder ready to ignight.

It is a matter of breaking the letter of the "don't point a gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy" law (and freaking out bystanders, teaching bad habits to children, acting in an unsafe manner, etc) versus an unlikely but possible safety issue particular to muzzleloaders.

I myself blow across the muzzle and use a hand to funnel the wind into the bore without placing my mouth on the gun itself, which seems a practical solution. I also favor the idea that the first rule of gun safety is "know the condition of your weapon," since as a practical matter I can't always treat the gun as loaded and a rule that has to be selectively and deliberately broken is not a good law.

Interesting. One of the major concerns with a cartridge weapon being "always loaded" is that it is so easy for a cartridge to find it's way in by lack of attention. I didn't really associate that with a freshly fired BP rifle.

I don't own any BP now, but I do have a Colt Navy gnawing at my wallet from time to time.

I was told to do that when I first started shooting black powder, so I would reverse the rifle, ground the butt, grab the muzzle, blow down the barrel, and then start loading.

Then one day I did that and got to the point of blowing down the barrel, and the SOB in the lane next to me popped off his shot.

My first thought was, "I've just blown my brains out"

My second thought was, "how am I thinking with a giant hole through my head?"

Then I had to explain why I started laughing.

Jack - Yeah, it can be a tad superstitious but it's mostly to train yourself to follow the rules when it matters. It's like doing your warm-up set on the bench and treating it like it's your one rep - sure, you don't need perfect form to bench 135, but it's good practice for weights when you actually need perfect form.

But yes, if you've removed the magazine and inspected the chamber 100 times and confirmed it's unloaded it's a bit silly to act like a bullet is going to magically appear in the gun.

A woman that hunts had her high school age kids out and I noticed once, a little ritual they did when she handed him her gun to put in the truck. It was like "the gun is yours" ... or something. 332 My dad actually loaned me an old .22 that I used as a prop in a big Atlanta play I stage managed.

Every night when the actor fired it (blanks, natch) the audience would jump out of their skins.

Daddy insisted I keep it in my Atlanta apartment in case I was robbed. Well, lo and behold, I came home to the mansion I lived in (was turned into four apartments), and it was being re-roofed. Someone tore a hole through the ceiling above my bed and my suitcase was laid open on my bed, but when I came in the upstairs back door, they fled. And never noticed the loaded 22 under my bed. Damn, I miss that gun.

Who pays for C-SPAN? IIRC, the various cable/satellite companies all chip in for it, which is obviously then passed on to subscribers, right?

So why can't the PBS programming be supported that way instead of off of taxes? Heck, channels like MSNBC can exist because, A] NBC owns a lot of other profitable channels, so it can afford the loss, and B] like other unprofitable channels, it survives through bundling channels as opposed to cable/satellite customers being able to pay for only channels they want a la cart. So why not bundle PBS and have the cable/satellite companies fund it?!?

352 A couple of my liberal coworkers were talking about that Hawaiian judge's ruling, and how awesome it is. They don't seem to realize the ramifications of a judicial precedent like this.

See, the written verdict, here, acknowledges that, as our duly-elected President, Trump does have this power enumerated to him by the Constitution. But this judge has declared that he doesn't like the way Trump is using the power, because Trump has the "wrong" political views, and therefore he, this mere judge, gets to take a Constitutionally-granted power away from the President.

You know, some day, there will be a Democrat President again. Are liberals okay with the idea of some judge in Texas taking a Constitutionally-granted power away from that President, just because he disagrees with the President politically?

Or if you use a handgun to defend yourself. It's not uncommon for the cops to destroy the gun immediately after your shoot is ruled justified. Sometimes they destroy it by having it disappear into the Assistant Chief's personal gun safe.

Some jurisdictions are worse about this than others, of course.

Even if you get it back, it's likely to have been tossed into a bin with a bunch of other evidence guns, and it'll look like someone dragged it behind their squad car on a high speed chase.

Which is why it's a good idea to use a fairly inexpensive and common firearm for your defense needs.

Put the hammer on half cock to spin the cylinder. Load one round, skip one chamber then load four. Bring to full cock and lower the hammer. The firing pin will be on the empty chamber every time.

The point being that a lot of people here got it completely wrong in 2012 when they predicted Romney would win. 394 I should like to whine about my 2A rights, which are supposed to be rights like the other rights. A right, as to free speech, is something you inherently possess.

I've been a CCW permit holder in MA. When I moved to CT they wouldn't recognize it. So I've twice spent $100-ish to take the safety courses here in CT. I've never come up with the roughly $200 in application fees, background check fees, fingerprint fees that it takes to get permitted here.

So, if I have a couple of handguns safely locked and stored at home I can't legally bring them out of the house nor buy ammunition for them.

396 A woman that hunts had her high school age kids out and I noticed once, a little ritual they did when she handed him her gun to put in the truck. It was like "the gun is yours" ... or something. I forget the exact words but like an official ... "take control" thing, which was kinda nifty.

I do that with my kids: when we're handing a gun between us, the "handee" looks the "hander" in the eye & says "Thank You" before the hander lets go of the weapon.

We even do it with the pellet rifle. I do it when I take a new shooter to the range

2. Obama visited: Buzz's SteakHouse, 413 Kawailoa Rd, Kailua, HI 96734 (I don't think this one is relevant)

3. Location of the Courthouse: Prince Kuhio Federal Building, 300 Ala Moana Blvd, Honolulu, HI 96850

If you look on google maps, both 1 and 2 are about 30 minutes by car from the courthouse.. Obviously if Obama were to meet him, they wouldn't meet at the courthouse- that's just silly. But it gives you a rough idea of the the general vicinity in which the judge lives and works, and therefore, how accessible he would have been to Obama. Given the location of the courthouse on the water, if the judge were to leave the courthouse, he almost certainly would only be traveling closer towards Obama. Given Obama's locations on the water as well, were he to leave the country club, he almost certainly would only be traveling closer towards the judge.

Way back when I was a wee sprog, we moved from Athens GA to Lawrence MA. According to the story as I understand it, my dad had to register his firearms (which were probably a pump shotgun, maybe a Ruger Security Six, and a 10/22) and the desk sergeant gave him a huge ration of shit and hurry-up-and-wait. Dad had copies of all the relevant state laws or something, and finally got the shift supervisor to relent, so the desk sergeant had to fill out the registrations. As he was doing so he said something like, "your mistake was bringing your guns into Massachusetts", to which my dad, according to the story, replied, "no sir, my mistake was bringing my family to Massachusetts".

420 I am sure Juan's sons and daughters in laws have taught him all about guns and such. Juan has said on more than one occasion that the first person who called him after he was fired at (PBS for saying seeing muslims in regalia board a plane made him nervous) was Hannity who offered him a paid job as a regular guest. Doesn't sound like these two take their work far from the sound stage.

422 [. . .] There was a simple method to make sure. Put the hammer on half
cock to spin the cylinder. Load one round, skip one chamber then load
four. Bring to full cock and lower the hammer. The firing pin will be on
the empty chamber every time.
Posted by: JTB at March 16, 2017 09:52 PM (V+03K)

With the Navy and Army Colt you could also put it on half cock - and that did leave it open to catching the hammer and fanning it by accident - or you could ease the hammer back a enough to disengage the cylinder indexing lock, and rotate the cylinder just enough to allow you to rest the hammer between the nipples

423 364 342 A lot of people in this thread seem to be taking pleasure from an unsubstantiated CNN hit piece while virtue signaling about how Sean Hannity is "well intentioned but whiny and not very smart". Interesting. I seem to recall a time last year when the pervasive never-Trump crowd here was eating its own and saying he could never be president while Hannity stood nearly alone in offering his full support.

So who again is whiny and not so bright?

I was all in on Trump 2 months after he announced.

I've always believed Hannity to be lazy, not prepared, immature, speaking in sound bites like a parrot, and somebody who has a long history of riding coattails beginning with his radio career on Rush's coattails.

And you don't point a gun at anybody no matter what. Dumb move. He needs to grow up and smarten up.
Posted by: Phone of Widespread Pepe at March 16, 2017 09:47 PM (3cOA7)

No doubt this will be Willowed. I like Sean Hannity. He has flaws, as all of us do, but he is fearless in his opposition to the left. With me, that counts for a lot.

As for the gun-pointing incident: many years ago I saw a bumper sticker on the car of an elderly gentleman. It read, "I don't believe the liberal media."

424 #384: I keep my revolver loaded that way, with an empty chamber in the firing position. I figure, if I'm going to fire the gun at someone, I will pull the trigger more than once, and loading it this way prevents accidental discharges.
