Clinton Ally and CIA Benghazi Talking Points Massage Therapist Mike Morrell: There's Smoke But "No Fire, At All" In Claims of Russia-Trump Collusion

That should be the end of the matter, but then, Clapper's statement that there was absolutely no evidence of such a deal also should have been the end of the matter, but wasn't.

As some wag -- maybe a commenter here -- hinted, the media is going to go through and endless cyle:

Pound the Russia drum.

When that fails, pound the tax drum.

When that fails, pound the Russia drum.

Occasionally mix in a Pussy March and then repeat.

On Trump's counter-suit (feels like a counter-lawsuit, anyway) that Obama wiretapped him:

Ryan and the Senate Intel committee say there's no evidence of surveillance at Trump Tower.

But that's Trump Tower. Trump's accusation was broad and sloppy, but I notice these denials are very specific and very precise.

For his part, Trump doubles down and promises that "evidence" will be coming soon, maybe in the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, Judge Napolitano claimed on FoxNews that three sources had told him that people in the Obama Administration had asked Britain's NSA, the GCHQ, to do the spying.

That's a routine and plausible practice -- it's well known that the US cannot spy on its own citizens, so it occasionally (and illegally) asks the British to do it for them, who are not barred from spying on US citizens. And the US performs the same favor in return for them.

Whether that happened here, who knows. But the general practice of "you spy on the ones we're not allowed to, and we'll spy on the ones you're not allowed to" isn't a well-kept secret. (See section titled "Concerns."

I have no idea on these claims. I do know, without a doubt, that Obama changed the rules regarding "minimization" (blacking out) of the names of US citizens "incidentally" caught in surveillance captures, and then disseminated this information all around the government. I also know that that information was subsequently leaked -- which I surmise was the plan all along.

The strident belief held by some that this didn't happen seems to rely chiefly on a belief that Obama wouldn't do something like that -- an opinion I don't share in -- and the claims of Obama's top ranking spymasters who say they wouldn't do something like that.

A claim I also don't put much stock in.

I'm increasingly baffled by what the rules on concerning propagating suspicions for which there is "no evidence" -- apparently one is officially a member of the Smart Set for propagating evidence-free suspicions about Trump collusion with Russian intelligence, but one is an unhinged conspiracy monger lunatic for entertaining evidence-free suspicions about Obama collusion with British intelligence.

Help me out, fellas -- what is the basis for this distinction, other than some of you seem to like Obama a lot more than Trump?

11 "Ryan and the Senate Intel committee say there's no evidence of surveillance at Trump Tower."

I think we are dealing with a very finely-parsed definition of "wiretapping" and "surveillance" here.

The NSA vacuums up and stores the content of every phone call in America - yours, mine, Trump's. They don't need to "wiretap" anybody - the question is whether they accessed the information they already possessed about Trump's phone calls.

Through the "Five Eyes" agreement, all of what Winston Churchill called the Anglosphere shares this information - so the Brits certainly could have accessed the NSA's information, and provided it back to the Federal government in a deniable fashion.

There was no surveillance, despite the leaked server kerfluffle and the two separate FISA applications months apart and NSA group-gobbling all the comm info and transcripts of the non-surveillance being leaked and shown confidentially to the press and politicians who claimed it was evidence and the denied it existed a month later and foreign surveillance and oh he deserved it anyway.

Back in my PacBell days, a lot of them got put in the cross connect boxes. There was one in particular that I provisioned the line from the CO to the box (F1 pair). As I understood it, that the "tap" (it was basically a digital recording device) was connected to the line being monitored and the line I was provisioning was also connected to the tap. That line then fed the collected data directly back to the monitoring agency. No need for a random pest control van parked down the street. I can say that there were several small black boxes attached to various lines in the bottom of one particular box where I usually did this work.

"Jan 20th NYT front page headline above the fold:
Wiretapped Data Used in Inquiry of Trump Aides
How else was Flynn caught in Acting AG Sally Yates' perjury trap?
Irony is that the Obamans hoped for a lot more dirt but didn't find it"

"That the Obamans tapped the Trumpsters is a huge political exposure. But the huge criminal exposure is over their leaking classified documents. Stiff jail time. Relatively easy to prove if you can establish basic predicate facts, i.e. no need to prove motive.
So the pressure here will take this to the next level: criminal indictments over the leaking. Trump will have to go there, and at the right time, will want to go there.
Loretta Lynch has exposure here. Sally Yates even more because of her direct involvement with Flynn.
The only way this doesn't play is if the Trumpsters can't identify specific leakers."

If you dislike Trump, you can divine intent.

If you like obama, no amount of past practice or specific requests for an investigation of Russian hacking the election to help Trump is useful in any way to lead to an inference that obama used the full trappings of the intelligence state to try to damage a political rival.

What I'm hoping is about to happen is that Trump will infact have the goods on this stuff, they know he has it, but they are lying anyway because they think he is bluffing. What this will do is implicate the past administration and key players in congress.

That's what I hope is going to happen. Trump certainly says crazy stuff all the time, but I saw this particular round of tweets as laying a trap of sorts. We'll see...

and after he's repeated this several times, you begin to think that maybe he does smell smoke, and you and he should investigate.

in politics, 'investigate' means McCain and his ilk finally call for a special prosecutor, and then the floodgates slowly open and, pardon my mixed metaphors, people start to get sucked up. Think Scooter Libby.

The Dems and their allies will most likely never stop trying to force Trump out of office.

I think what just happened here was Trump gave these clowns the rope to hang themselves, and they happily tied the nooses.

----------

Something is going on. All these politicians are being very specific in their denials and the Press Hacks are being deliberately obtuse in there inquires.

No one and I mean no one will say that no one in the Trump campaign was subject to any type of surveillance, domestic or in cooperation with other countries, at any time.

I've never seen such parsing since Slick Willy was in office.

171 I mean, it's not just the NY Times. All these media groups claim they have "sources who say" that they have evidence of Trump collusion with the Russians. The NY Times simply added how they got this information. Trump calling them out quickly changed the narrative - now everyone wants proof.

Willing to accept it as fact before Trump's tweet, but afterwards everyone wants proof.

You can't talk about anonymous intelligence sources talking about Russia and then put out a flat denial of how those anonymous sources gathered this information.

173 First of all, why didnt PDT undo the EO on the 'sharing of intelligence to everyone'? Cant he just do that? Theres an article on CTH about Mike Rogers (NSA) going to the 'Tower' in Dec, I think, w/o the Barry admin knowing..and that supposedly caused a big snitfit among the knowitalls at 1600 at that time and wanted Rogers fired.....And Rogers is still head of the NSA btw...You read things about the military and the CIA having competing factions in Syria..and you really start to wonder who's side who is on at this point. And then...you really start to think whether or not its just too late for this whole thing. Look at the reaction of the GOP to Trumps budget....this shouldve been right down their alley..instead..shrill screaming.....So, I dont know.

174 Sorry I'm late to the comments, but I keep wondering WTH everyone is asking for "proof" that Trump Tower was actually wiretapped, surveilled, pick your verb-of-the-day: the proof is that a transcript of Mike Flynn's telephone conversation with the Russian ambassador was leaked to the media!
Has everyone forgotten that Flynn was IN TRUMP TOWER when that phone call was made?
My head is going to explode if I keep hearing the sneering condescension in regard to PDT's "proof."

175 The situation is easy to call.

To still be a leftist requires both an inability to relate cause to effect over time and an inability to discern fact from fiction.

Those managing the left as a weapon know this.

The managers can say whatever they want. Nothing is too outlandish or blatantly obtuse for their useful idiots to suck down and swallow without conscious though.

They know this. Both sides, the managers and the useful idiots. The useful idiots want to be lied to. They want to be fed bullshit that pisses them off.

The entire program has been progressing quite nicely for the left for decades and there's no turning back now.

It will come to blood in the streets. That's an absolute given.

176 ace:

"But that's Trump Tower. Trump's accusation was broad and sloppy, but I notice these denials are very specific and very precise."

Very. The usual suspects are flapping their arms, too: McCain, Graham, Schiff, Pelosi, the Deep State secret police, ad nauseum. There's fire here, not smoke, and most of the Imperial City caretakers are about to be exposed as the fascist pigs they are.
