Speaking
of this particular pompous jackass... I was at the Freedom Works rally
toady and ran into him while we were going office to office urging
rejection of Ryancare and full Obamacare repeal.

First, he is shorter than I expected.

Second our conversation went like this:
redbanzai: Senator, I would hope that we have your support for a complete repeal of Obamacare.
pompous jackass: Of course, I ran in support of repeal and I will support repeal and replace.
redbanzai: Senator, you ran promising full repeal. I would expect you to keep that promise.
pompous
jackass: I will support repeal and replace... there are 150,000 people
who would lose benefits Medicaid in Arizona if we just repeal.
redbanzai:
Senator, there are a whole lot more than 150,000 of your taxpaying
constituents who have been harmed by Obamacare and need it to be
completely gone.
pompous jackass: I support repeal and replace and we will just have to disagree. (as he fast walks away in a huff)

Any
of you all from Arizona may want to call his office and clue him in
that perhaps he should care about the larger number of taxpayers who are
footing the government bill more that the much smaller number people
who are leeching off those taxpayers.

I kinda regret that I didn't call him a pompous jackass to his face now.

126 And now it's time for qdpsteve's Daily Annoyance Rant:

I don't know if anyone here knows, but I decided to put the Glidecam HD-2000 that I bought last year back up for sale, I've decided I don't really need it and the money would be much handier right now anyway. So I put up an ad at Craigslist, below:

x

Anyhoo, as all of you can PLAINLY SEE BECAUSE YOU KNOW HOW TO READ, it says "$300 firm."

So today I got a text message: "Willing to sell it for $200?"

Grrrr. I did not respond. But this is a thing with me. I've always been expected to give away my labor and goods for free or next to it.

Now, yes, $200 would still be nice. But IT'S NOT WHAT I ASKED FOR. I ASKED FOR $300. If you look at other ads for this model of Glidecam, EVERYONE ELSE is asking at least $350. I think my current price is more than reasonable and competitive.

Okay, done. But I was tempted at one point today and get back to the guy, promise to meet him somewhere, and never show up. Again, grrrr.

(Hey, today's rant is 100% non-political too! What do you know, not reading Jeffrey Wells is already paying off big dividends.) :-)

189 Primordial, LOL.

I had a boss years ago, at a law firm, who was just ridiculous about negotiating. If you didn't take his first offer, he would start going *lower.*

So I reverse-psyched him and would respond by going higher. I finally larned 'im to negotiate like a grownup.

He also was notorious for ALWAYS asking me to pick up his lunch, whenever he found out I was going out, especially if I was going to either Wendy's or KFC. *And* if I couldn't remember *to the penny* what he owed me, he would refuse to pay me back.

I finally just started bald-faced lying to him.

"You're going to lunch?"
"Yeah"
"Where?"
"I don't know"
"Wendys? KFC?"
"I don't know"
"Pick me up something, I'll pay you back"
"I don't even know if I'm going to eat"
"Just get me an original breast or a regular burger"
"I don't know what I'm getting"
"Get me something anyway"
"I don't even know if I'm driving"
"C'mon, don't you wanna be cool?"
"I'm not cool anyway"

Again, I finally kinda/sorta wore him down.

209 Watched Luke Cage on Netflix recently. Interesting experience.

Some of it is unsurprising. For instance, Luke demonstrates his love of books by frequently being seen with a copy of 'Invisible Man' (plus a few similar books, though IM is the one that's seen the most often).

But on the other hand, there are some interesting bits of pushback against progressivism...

For instance, one of the villains that we're introduced to early on is a black city councilwoman. Physically, she reminds me very much of a slimmer Oprah Winfrey. One of her campaign platforms openly calls for keeping Harlem black. She's clearly not a fan of racial diversity. And one of her political goals involves getting money for the construction of some largely unidentified buildings. We don't know much about the buildings in question, but the pamphlet being passed out to push her initiative proudly proclaims it to be a "Green Initiative". Luke's first direct confrontation against criminals in the series comes when he stops a group of thugs who are openly shaking down small business owners to collect "donations" for the aforementioned "green initiative".

And it doesn't stop there.

Now don't get me wrong. This isn't a series pushing conservative ideas about how to fix the black community. But it doesn't have problems linking the bad guys with progressive ideas, as mentioned above. Whites aren't the villains here (other than a couple of scenes, the only white characters are cops). The lack of fathers in the black community is mentioned early on. And Pat Moynihan even gets a quick positive mention (unfortunately, the guy bringing him up - a black gangster who's one of the few characters seen reading - promptly gets shot and killed by his crime lord boss who doesn't like the brief explanation of Moynihan's ideas).

Unfortunately, I thought the overall writing could have been better. There were some quick and clever call-back one-liners delivered with the expectation that if you didn't recognize it there was no need to point it out to you (for instance, one character asks another - named Willis - what he's talking about; there is no interruption in the conversation or mugging for the camera to point out that he just quoted a well-known line). But overall the script felt lacking.

As to the buying stuff, I've known people who used to buy from the public. They would make bids that I would be embarrassed to make. Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at March 15, 2017 10:46 PM (voOPb)

The worst are the curbstoners. If you are not aware of the phenomena, it is essentially people making a living as unlicensed used car dealers. They offer you asking price, you make the trip, then they hit you with the high pressure sales stuff, but in reverse.
They key is that they get you to either not sign over the title or sign it over to someone else whose ID they have, so that they can avoid the sales tax and relicense fees.

You can kind of tell who might be one in your neighborhood by watching the people with high turnover of junky or branded title cars.

258 I had a yard sale once. I had no idea what my stuff was worth; I just wanted to get rid of it.

There was one item, I don't even remember what it was. I said "50 cents", and the woman said, "Too much" and walked away. I thought, "Have you never heard of haggling? Offer me a quarter and it's yours." I was half tempted to chase her to her car and throw it at her.

On the other hand, there was a ceramic rooster that my mom had in the dining room when I was a kid. I sold it for a dollar, and the woman who bought it mentioned that she collected them. Curious, I asked her how much it was really worth. She said $25-$30. I said, "Cool. Good for you!"

Posted by: qdpsteve at March 15, 2017 10:51 PM (u8kLQ)

This idea of "feeling like a chump" is really the wrong way to look at this. If you think it should definitely sell for $350 (as the others) then ask for $350 and don't write "firm" but write that you will not consider any lower offers.

Otherwise, just find a price that you would be happy with (if you didn't think/know that others were getting $350) and consider that your last offer.

But put aside this mindset that you are a chump for selling it at a lower price than others. If there were that many buyers out there for that price then you would probably get it. Who knows why others might be getting $350, or if they even are? You just worry about what it's worth to you.

283 Primordial, a Glidecam is like a Steadicam. A rig for your camera that allows you to hold onto it with a handle, but you get a really smooth, almost float-like effect.

Two of the first movies to use Steadicam extensively were "Bound For Glory" and "The Shining."

They used to cost thousands, now there's finally models that are affordable. But they are tricky to use, and I found out that my camera is too heavy for my Glidecam. No matter what I do, the camera won't stay level.

Posted by: qdpsteve at March 15, 2017 10:39 PM (u8kLQ)

I'm old enough to remember an Academy Awards (I think it was) show where they showed off a camera like that for the first time.

The cameraman ran up and down some stairs, and the view was completely stable, and you could hear the oohs and ahhhs from the audience.

And yeah, off my lawn punks.

There was a big box truck for free. The guy had the title but had taken the engine out. We want something for secure storage, as we are going to sell this house. The guy had lots of calls but my husband offered him $200. We got the truck. We have a engine lined up for it from a motorbike that caught fire. We'll pick it up this weekend for $300. Trucks like this are going for several thousand. After we move, we'll sell it and split the profit with the guy that's putting in the engine for us.

Sometimes, when it's free, it's good to offer money anyway.

311 You just have to go with the flow on Craigslist - some people get the protocol. Some people are CL civilians. Some people are just trolling to see what they can as cheap as they can so they can turn around and sell it at what the real price is.

CL protocol is, in my experience, that people ask for more than they want EVEN IF THEY SAY PRICE IS FIRM. For some people, the haggle is part of the experience. You want $300? Ask for $330.

Nope. This high school had mostly kids from what appeared to be nice homes. There are a lot of helicopter parents in that area, so maybe it's that. I knew one kid who committed suicide who used drugs. I suspect that the severe mood swings from that can lead to it.

About 10 years ago I sold a bunch of hockey sweaters from a defunct local team on Ebay. These were selling for about $100 a piece, and I put in the auction that I would only ship via USPS with their flat rate. Every time I sold one to someone local, they always asked if they could meet up "to save on the shipping cost". $5. Me waiting around for them to show up so that they could try to get the price down. No thanks, just hit Paypal because I don't have time to wait for you.

The kids got into wondering what their card decks were worth, so they bought a price listing. Lots of oohs and aahs and disputes as to who owned what.

They informed me of how "rich" they were in MtG world. I asked, "Has anyone offered you any $$$ for even one of your cards?" "No." "Then they are worth exactly $0 and the only person who has made money on those cards is the person who created that price list and sold it to you." "Oh..."

I hope this works better than our pickup. It was supposed to be a truck with a bad engine and good transimission. Bought another truck for the engine, that had a bad tranny. When we got the engine in, the tranny turned out to be bad too. Rebuilt that, put in three different fuel pumps before we got one that works and replaced every sensor known to man. It finally starts reliably and my husband loves it. I call it the Mexican Blackbird.

He thought, "get me the hell out of here."

The Eagles Nest was built for him by Bormann on the top of a mountain at enormous expense. Hitler didn't like heights and only visited it a couple of times.

Hitler's house was nearby but it was the Berghof. You may be thinking of Wolfschanze or Wolf's Lair, which was his military headquarters during the Eastern campaign. It was near Rastenburg in East Prussia.

427 Weirddave, pretty much spot on re Hitler and conquering Russia. Of course the Nazis' insane racial delusions precluded working *with* the Ukrainians and others who would have at least made for a more secure rear and lines of communications. Not counting the Vlasov army, or the SS recruits and other volunteers from the Caucasus/southern areas (mostly Muslim ..... and whose story is not well known).

Just happened to finish a book, yesterday, on the pre-war Soviet military (Stumbling Colossus, by Glantz). Summary: due to the purges, the still-forming industrial base, the low educational level, and upgrade/reform programs then in mid-stride, the Soviets were not ready, at all.

Yes yes Stalin refused to see the likelihood of invasion, thought he could outwait/outwit Hitler, etc.

One thing interesting in the book I didn't know: Zhukov and Timoshenko (ch. of staff and minister of defense) went to Stalin literally on the evening of June 21, with compelling fresh intel (warnings from German deserters who'd crossed the lines that day) that, on top of a stream of similar indicators that had been building for weeks, convinced Stalin to approve a fairly reasonable alert and mobilization order.

The order went out around midnight, by the time deciphering and distribution was done, some areas already had "confirmation" in the form of artillery and bombing attacks, and then German forces moving in. But given the material and other weaknesses in Soviet forces, even posturing fully or an invasion might not have made much difference, in terms of the first year of war.

Lots of teen suicides in the north Dallas suburbs. Some of it is definitely linked to drugs. There are lots of theories but they happen in prosperous areas, so poverty is a factor.

I've been hearing for 25-plus years now about heavy heroin use by well-off white teenagers in Plano.

I kept asking, geez, how'd *that* happen?

I now suspect that it had its roots in the late 1970s flight of wealthy Iranian exiles abroad. They brought the habit of social heroin use with them, and it has slowly moved from their ethnic circles out into the larger communities in the USA where they put down roots.

It worked that way in Los Angeles, and as it turns out, a bunch of them ended up in north Dallas communities too.

Exactly. In fact, we *know* that most people don't have the background, or inclination, to recoil at the illogic and b.s. Because they figure, reasonably, that the media's *job* is to get them information, with enough context to understand it in some cases.

I used to fisk (deconstruct/refute/ridicule), line by line, major MSM stories for friends and colleagues via email. This was right after 9/11. All these people had the background and interest to enjoy it.

Division of labor. What if, say, power-plant workers didn't do *their* jobs? How about, say, medical lab techs? Airline pilots? Of course, chaos and calamity.

But, for the most part, the media and information profession in the US utterly fails to do their job, when it comes to public policy issues. A crippling development that has largely hollowed out a great country and civic culture.

Yeah, and I don't know what kind of incentives can be put in place to motivate these people to simply do a conscientious job. It is soo easy to play to the lowest common denominator. Maybe this backlash against the MFM and having PDT continually harp on these assholes will finally cause some sort of shaking out.

I'm optimistic that some of the MFM will become/remain quality, and report events accurately. However, I am also aware that this 'shakeout' will probably be messy and dramatic.

A few wires pasted to the inside of the box truck walls, and connected such that severing one would cause a loud fireworks device to explode, would probably inhibit that sort of assault. Or at least alert the owner to the fact that an assault is going on.

Historically, warmer periods have led to increased human growth and advancement due to the increase in cultivatable land. Hell, IF the globe were warming, it would be a good thing.

About the MSM, I had an employee today who told me that the electoral college should be done away with cuz Hillary won the popular vote. I countered that it was working exactly as intended, requiring a president to win a large cross section of states and not just a couple of big ones (and that it had nothing to do with slavery as he said. He didn't know what it had to do with slavery, just that it was "something") I told him Hillary's margin came entirely from Ca. He didn't believe me, so I showed him, on CNN's website. To his credit he said "Huh, you're right, I didn't know that". He didn't change his mind about herself being president however. The point is, that he had no idea, because he is a casual consumer of news.

489 It was also McCain's plane from whence the Zuni
rocket got loose and caused the huge fire on the USS Forrestal that
killed so many sailors.

We were shown the movie Trial By Fire at OCS regarding the fire. It
is devastating watching hose teams advancing toward the fire only to be
obliterated by 1000 pound bombs detonating.

McCain was shot down shortly thereafter and the official report on
the fire said that a short caused the rocket to misfire, but I have
always wondered.

Posted by: Sharkman at March 16, 2017 12:11 AM (0dLxk)

No. It was not. McCain's aircraft (belonging to VA-81, WHO SAID SUNLINERS???) was sitting NEXT TO the one that got hit. The rocket came from an F-4 Phantom owned by VF-11. And the phenomenon of stray voltage is very well known in the aircraft weapons control community.

Every time I see someone trot this line out I get livid.

I know I have several times. I read the Naval Safety Center report on the fire to my shop when I was in VFA-81 because some of the guys in the shop were convinced that "we" (as in Avionics Shop) caused the Forrestal fire because the Avionics Shop is responsible for release and control checks (including stray voltage). The NSC report lists two planes that could have been responsible for the launch based on aircraft placement and using the post-fire analysis and PLAT camera footage as evidence. Both were F-4's and both belonged to VF-11 (a squadron that won the Battle E when I was in their sister squadron, VF-31...on the Forrestal. In the late 80's, not the 60's, hell I ain't that old).

G'morning Salty.

For the most part, it was about 4 inches of very wet, heavy slushy snow that was easily plowed off the roads.

Accident rate didn't really tick upward due topmost businesses and schools being closed.

The fun part was the young parents who chose to take their children sledding, or just staying in the house after the plowing was complete, and failed to remove the slushy snow barrier between their car, and the now cleared road, just a foot or two from the wheels of their car, created by the city plow.

Yeh, by the next morning, it had become solid blocks of frozen ice, rendering their vehicles trapped inside their parking spot.

But the shooting and murder rate has dropped with the colder weather, so we have that going for us.

536 I was listening to the D.L.Hugely Show on the drive home yesterday, and what they said was a shock to me. They are of the opinion that Rachel Madcow is "Bring It!". That she will be the nucleus that will form a Tea-Party like force for their side. I kid you not! How can two different sets of people see the same events and walk away with two different opinions of what the hell just happened?
