administrative discharge. The base mental health clinic is not following
its own basic procedures and Pooky's paying the price for it. I can't
have him wind up in the hospital again, but that's where Mental Health
might send him today.

Make a speech and say, "if democrats love Obamacare so much, they can have it...good and hard." Then enforce, to the maximum extent possible, every single provision of Obamacare exactly as it is written. Taxes, penalties, no transferring money to insurance companies to keep them in the market. No exceptions for any union, or corporation.
The dirty secret of Obamacare is that we have never actually had Obamacare - he was careful to shield us from the bad stuff (executive discretion) while only implementing the good stuff. people who support Obamacare have never dealt with half the bad crap in there.
Then pass a simple law, if states want to do something different, then can "opt out" of Obamacare and implement their own plans.

The local VA has all the paperwork if he gets medboarded and they've been pushing for his problems to get solved. But today the psychiatrist said that the 2500+ questionnaire Pooky did yesterday (that the doc didn't read the results of) was a "test" to see if he's faking the depression symptoms. His psychologist is meeting with him Friday and she had hoped to see the test results by then. If she thinks he's "faking it" we're going to the Patient Advocate, because what the hell is the point of him scoring high on dozens of separate depression tests if they're just going to throw out the results?!

We had similar issues with navy hospital. usmc wasnt any better. We had ussues from him getting sick in Iraq, then same infection again just after he got home, nearly died. The lost all record of treatment.. Glad you are having better luck with VA than Grimmy had we are still trying to get it all straightened out. Half his file was missing.

Actually, he can. Broad new powers were specifically given to the head of HHS under Obamacare to do an enormous amount of things. It was embedded right in the law.
Aside from all the other problems with Obamacare this was a huge part of the problem. Even when the law was passed we couldn't see everything that was in the law because much of it was indeed "made up as they went along". Obamacare itself was more of a framework with most of the details being filled in by HHS after the law was passed.
However, much like Obama EOs, a lot of this can also be wiped out with a simple wave of the pen and phone.

I hope so - the thing that worries me is very high turnout in Amsterdam and the other big cities. (It's not like there's a lot of rural areas in the Netherlands. There's not a lot of areas, period.)

Specifically, the number of "beneficiaries" of O-care - which is *the number of people now with some non-Medicaid insurance who were, prior to 2014, INVOLUNTARILY FINANCIALLY uninsured* - and only that.
Then juxtapose that with the estimates of previously (happily, easily) insured people (mostly in the individual and small biz markets) who, since 2014, are now uninsured, or financially devastated by the premium/deductible spikes (in CA, for example, individual plans increased in price 300%, overnight, on Jan. '14, and are now up about 400% over the 2013 rates). The ratio of victims/beneficiaries is, at minimum, 5 to 1, probably more like 7 to 1 (get those f***king numbers out there, Price, and hammer then every single time you open your mouth about the topic).
Third, engage, for F***ING ONCE, in f***ing POLITICS. O-care was a political disaster for the Dems, from the outset, for a reason. It is now a *worse* political disaster for them, as it spirals down. HANG IT AROUND THEIR F***ING NECKS, 24/7.
In practical terms, there was always an obvious strategy.
* repeal everything you can via reconciliation, respecting the normal germaneness rules of the Budget Act process
* this leaves much of the damage unfixed (esp. the regs that have destroyed the individual/small biz market), so .... identify the remaining critical, urgent changes (repeals) needed, and immediately pass a bill with those through the House.
* then you put the ENTIRE political weight of not fixing the ongoing disaster on 10 or so Senate Dems up for re-election (from Trump states). Sweat the bejeesus out of them, start the campaign TODAY, massive relentless media campaign in their states stating the truth: they can vote to relieve the suffering of millions, or not.
For the politically illiterate (and there are some here, and it's surprising given their obvious smarts), the "damage" from a comparative handful of "beneficiaries" losing their "coverage" would obviously nothing compared to the gainzzz from relieving up to tens of millions from a life-changing blow to their finances.
And ..... if you want to cushion even that manageable damage, fine, write a f***ing check for whatever to buy those "beneficiaries" two years of crappy O-care type coverage, while markets are restored (to even better condition than pre-O-care), when costs should help many of them participate normally.

I honestly agree. Ideally, the filibuster really shouldn't exist.
But here's the thing: the Senate largely loves it because it makes them feel important. And Mitch McConnell loves the "august nature" of the Senate, and that includes all the little rules that they've been writing and rewriting for themselves over the last 200+ years.
Politics is the art of the possible, and part of that is that the reality of the situation is that a lot of people in the Senate like the filibuster for a variety of reasons.
Screaming about uprooting that rule is about as useful as screaming about the Chevron defense. You have to work on attitudes and personnel in order to change that.
If there's anyone to blame, it's the people of Kentucky for sending McConnell back to the Senate.

Not really. A big part of this includes limiting the federal dollars to the states under Medicaid and then block granting it to the states instead of it being a federally managed program.
There's so much noise to signal going on right now that I don't think anything is set in stone right now.
But one thing is clear, if we don't get some sort of healthcare reform done soon we aren't getting tax reform done this year.

Not true. It passed with 60 votes specifically because the Democrats did not get rid of the filibuster for legislation. I don't know why this myth continues to live on, it's not like it happened a hundred years ago and it is the entire point of what is happening right now. There were 58 Democrats, plus two Independents, Lieberman, a former Democrat and a guy who caucused with the Democrats and Crazy Uncle Bernie Sanders.
As to when the Republicans used it sometimes the threat of it is enough to not even try for legislation. Exactly what is happening right now to the Republicans and why they are looking to use reconciliation and do the process backwards.
The only part of the filibuster that Reid got rid of was the filibuster for federal judges. Something that is about to bite the Democrats in the ass when Trump starts appointing his own federal judges and he's got a bunch of them to do. Reid could have gutted the entire thing but even that crazy old loon was aware that Democrats weren't going to run the Senate forever.
When you kill the filibuster you turn the Senate into a smaller House. Straight majority rule. Yea, it's inconvenient at times but it is also inconvenient for the left when they are in power.

Predictions are hard, especially about the future (Yogi Berra?), but ..... having spent a lot of time in the Senate in a recent previous epoch, and watching it for several years more recently, I don't think there's much change the filibuster survives the next Senate Dem majority.
Reid's outrageous "time-out" from the cloture rule to stuff the DC Circuit court was a blueprint and a harbinger, not an outlier.
The civic degradation I always whine about includes, crucially, the collapse of standards and prudence among, mostly the Dems and their machine. They simply no longer share the civic values and mindset that made America unique. Thus: DC Circuit stuffing, massive voter fraud, judicial distortion of the electoral system based on race, the astonishingly anti-American idea of "card check" (no secret ballot) for unionizing votes.
So, assessment of ending the cloture rule in the Senate for legislation and nominations: risky, but probably the better call, given the actual circumstances we face now and in the future.

No. Parliamentary systems elect a Prime Minister (head of government) based on a majority/coaltion in parliament, which is what Wilders is running for and Rutte will likely win again.
Le Pen is running for President (head of state) which in France is a first round free for all and then a runoff between the two top candidates if no one gets 50%.

Somehow the first 80 years of the Republic we went without a Senate filibuster.
Reid got rid of and kept parts of the filibuster as needed. The only reason he didn't formally shit can the entire thing was he found creative ways around it.
Also, had Reid been able to do it over again, he would have nuked the filibuster without question. Democrats will get rid of it as soon as it suits them, so you might as well use the next 4 years to pass some real reforms.
It's incredibly naive to think if we fall on our swords the Dems will do the same.

Republicans took back the House in 2010, but Democrats kept the Senate so the need to kill the filibuster was basically on things like specific to the Senate like judicial nominations, which is why he only got rid of the filibuster for that purpose.
It was only when it was in his way

Under Wilson's prodding (I believe it was Fighting Bob Follette's filibuster of the Armed Ships Act which Republicans cynically latched onto during the whole Zimmerman Telegraph crisis to keep Congress in session but it has been awhile since I read that), the Senate established a 2/3rd's rule for cloture which was amended in 1975 to 3/5th's under the nuclear option. Reid's amendment was simply the last in a long line of changes to this institution.
It ain't the constitutional monolith that people think it is and the Senate has changed how it proceeds in a variety of ways during the last 100 years. It is not the magic wand that people think that it is and history shows that if it is inconvenient, it WILL be changed if the majority deems fit.
