Shock: Liberals Watching More TV

Really? I would never have guessed. They merely spend all fucking day yapping about it. Once respected "news" organizations pump out hourly updates on whatever Seth Meyers said last night.

Remember in the Bush years, where the liberal safe-space-seekers (though we hadn't heard of "safe spaces" at the time) retreated into an alternate reality called the West Wing Cinematic Universe, in which the country was led by Jed Bartlett?

I hate to say this, but surely the leftists are already chattering about it: It's time for a West Wing reboot. Maybe darker, edgier this time.

For Solace and Solidarity in the Trump Age, Liberals Turn the TV Back On

They're turning it back on? When the hell did they ever turn it off? All through the age of Obama we never stopped hearing about their precious shows.

They've written Bibles on Lena Dunham alone.

It was major news every time the former resident of the United States got to see Homeland or Game of Thrones early.

There is a new safe space for liberals in the age of President Trump: the television set.

This isn't new. It's a return to Oz.

...

Traditional television, a medium considered so last century, has watched audiences drift away for the better part of a decade. Now rattled liberals are surging back, seeking catharsis, solidarity and relief....

[V]iewers ar opting for television’s mass gathering spots, seeking the kind of shared experience that can validate and reassure.

...

You know how I keep calling TV the Universal Church of the Holy Cathode Ray?

Check this out:

In some ways, television is the last mass medium that Americans turn to en masse in uncertain times. "It is a place where we congregate," said Martin Kaplan, director of the Norman Lear Center for media and society at the University of Southern California. "We all gather around that hearth to know what's going on out there, and be comforted by the people who come on our screens to say, things will be all right."

Yup, it's a substitute church, with lame Seth Meyers clapter jokes subbing in for quotes from the ancients.

Have you heard of The Americans? Maybe some of you watch it. I know the Acela Corridor Crew watches it, because they tweet about it a lot.

Anyway, Nikki Haley just said she was binge-watching it.

A New York Times reporter decides that if someone says something about TV, it must be important news:

But if Nikki Haley's watching of The Americans says something about Trump's pro-Russian sympathies, what does this say?

So, whatever. Television shows are the only reality reporters care to report on.

This isn't directly related, but: Nice journolizming, guys.

I watched some episodes of the first season. Wasn't the male Soviet spy actually starting to like living in America?

And I remember in the first episode it depicted the time right before Reagan was inaugurated and there was one scene with an FBI agent saying how he couldn't believe this guy was going to be the president but then in the next scene he's giving up classified information to the soviet chic played by Kerri Russell while they're having sex.

I thought the scene made a great contrast.

nah bae, the opposite. I returned to that thing I was doing last week of writing a couple of posts during the night for posting the next day.

i got horrible sleep last night because I didn't seal my CPAP machine so it wasn't blowing much air and therefore rather than pumping air into me, it was kinda... asphyxiating me.

Kept waking up dying for breath.

Eventually I took a gander at the thing and saw it wasn't actually working right.

So what happens when you're asphyxiating in your sleep is that you start dreaming that you're asphyxiating, and then you wake up (half-way) semi-realizing you actually are asphyxiating.

I can endure these nightly torments only because I am built of noting but willpower and Tom Cruise posters.

Yep. Take the TV (unplugged, of course) apart and look for electrolytic capacitors (the cylindrical ones standing on end) that are bulging on top. They're done. Write down the values (capacitance and power rating) of the capacitors, go to Fry's, and pick up replacements.

Come back, fire up a soldering iron with a small tip, take out the old ones and replace them with the new ones.

I miss cool stuff like the comments section for the original TV show SWAT, where a couple of the show's former stars, James Coleman and Mark Shera, showed up to talk about old times, tell stories and kibbutz with the fans.

That was really cool.

Quadruple points if this leads to a scene of the character's love interest bolting out of some important meeting and running across the city (never taking a taxi or driving themselves) to be by their bedside, beside themselves with worry.

The result was a decade or so of bad caps in computers, consumer electronics, cars, and industrial equipment.

I know as an author I'm a bit biased, but reading is very good for the troubled soul. Reading gives you several hours a day of calm away from hardships, distractions, stress, pain, and the troubles of the day, if you let it.

Reading tends to help your mind organize its self better, gives you long-term concentration skills back, helps you learn to focus rather than be distracted constantly, enhances your vocabulary, and exposes you to thoughts, places, ideas, and concepts you might never meet in your life.

250 243 still working through this 5-pack of old EC Tubbs novels (short novels) about this character called Dumarest. It's pulpy 60s era decadent Imperial-age sci fi. (Imperial age = humanity has conquered thousands of stars and the sociopolitical order is now feudal or occasionally barbaric, while tech level remains pretty high -- sort of pulp fantasy, but with sci-fi tinging instead of magic.)

262 you-tube is full of videos on CFR and how they ran media (still do) to coordinate their globalist agenda messaging. Hollywood is another branch of the brainwashing and influence campaign. I like watching the older versions that go back to expose Cronkite and others that are still lauded as standards of excellence.

TV may be the current safe space, but the globalists have saturated culture, and Trump has plenty of globalist thinkers in his own administration still.

Hopefully, Bannon and a few others are clear-eyed enough to avoid their attempts at co-opting the America First message. Laura Ingraham also has been offering to point him toward the "right guys" since DC is full of saboteurs.

"The Americans" may point toward the Soviet style Russians, but the globalists are an evolved version that already marched through our institutions. They are not just the Soros-funded radical groups, but the CFR broad-based type leaders that are writing policy for the bureaucracy. (NAFTA, TPP, UN global warming institutions, etc)

++++

I enjoy the contradictions. As their cover, they are portraying the typical American family. So, the couple marries, not out of any kind of affection for each other, but because that's their cover. They have kids. These two KGB spies have to raise those kids as good little Americans. After all, they could never trust little children to not blow their cover, so the kids don't know they are part of a Soviet spy ring.

It is also amusing to watch them react to everyday things like a news broadcast about President Ronald Reagan (the monster). There is one episode about how they stole the plans for an American submarine which are then used to build a Soviet one. Thing was, the plans were phony, so the Soviet sub sinks with all hands aboard. And then they rail against the killer Reagan. He's to blame for those deaths.

Through flashbacks, we get to see some of their training to be spies. Part of what a spy does is recruit contacts, usually through seduction. So, they have to be willing to screw anyone who can help their cause. And so there are scenes of them practicing the art of seduction. Of course, seducing young hotties is not the thing they need to practice at. It is with the sad sacks they have to be willing to turn on the charm and close the deal. One scene is where the male KGB agent, as a young man, has to close the deal with this fat, old man. The knowing look on the fat old man's face is hilarious.

Read an account a while back of American soldiers in a hellish Japanese POW camp (were there any other kind?) who thought the war might be turning against their captors, but they wanted hear actual news, so they built some sort of crystal radio receiver, *including a capacitor* for the L-C circuit, from scraps of stuff they could scrounge up. And if they got caught, they would probably be killed.

Their ingenuity was completely amazing.

The Cinematic Universe is kind of a squishy dreamland where details change and you have only some kind of hazy memory that something isn't right - but you mostly follow the script anyway.

One of my favorites was a show I didn't watch - Reba - actress Scarlett Pomers left the show for most of a season to be treated for anorexia. When she suddenly returned almost a year later, someone just said "Where ya been?" and she replied "I went to get something to eat."

-New standards and grants for promoting efficiency in government and public institutions. New and renovated federal buildings must reduce fossil fuel use by 55% (from 2003 levels) by 2010, and 80% by 2020. All new federal buildings must be carbon-neutral by 2030.

.Seriously, it's the only thing they have left. I mean they were told from day one that Trump would lose one or two States in the Primary and pull out. That didn't happen so they went with Trump can't win the Primary.

Couple that with the hype the msm was running saying both the House and Senate were in play because Trump would drag everyone down with him and Republicans would be out of power for a generation or more.

When that didn't pan out they started on the Trump has no path to 270 meme. Heck even racheal madcow was touting that line the day before the election. I remember her saying that even if Trump takes every single State that leans Red, he can't possibly win, and she was predicting hillary could win in a potential landslide.

CSI: Miami was the worst for this. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER on that show was either a crook, related to a crook, friends with a crook, or had family who was involved with crooks. It was hilarious. It didn't matter what the big case was on any given week, because it was almost a guarantee that SOMEONE in the cast would have someone in their immediate circle of friends and family who was directly or indirectly involved.

BOSS DUDE: "We've got a body down by the pier, near the fishing boats. Johnny, doesn't your cousin work on a fishing boat?"

JOHNNY: "What? Uh, no. I don't think so." (internally: *Cousin Skippy works on the fishing boats, and he didn't come to Auntie Gloria's birthday party last night... But I'm sure it's nothing, so I won't say anything*)

(fast forward to the end of the episode)

COUSIN SKIPPY: (in tears as he's put in handcuffs) Is it really going to be okay, Johnny?

JOHNNY: (brave face) You did the right thing by coming forward, Skippy. Now the Bad Men who killed the Innocent Woman are going to go to prison for a long time. You'll get a light sentence for obstructing justice and falsifying evidence because you're a Good Person, and you've Learned Your Lesson. I knew you could do it, buddy.

COUSIN SKIPPY: Thanks, Johnny.

I can't remember if it was the Fourth First Season or the Fifth First Season that was the best.

It was well-written, as a drama, but that show was a walking, talking incarnation of Gell-Mann Amnesia.

325 "There is one episode about how they stole the plans for an American
submarine which are then used to build a Soviet one. Thing was, the
plans were phony, so the Soviet sub sinks with all hands aboard. And
then they rail against the killer Reagan. He's to blame for those
deaths."

In reality, one of the huge intelligence coups of the Reagan years was allowing Soviet operatives to covertly purchase natural gas pumps from a front company, even though their intent had been discerned. (Soviet industry couldn't reliably manufacture such things.)

The microcontroller firmware was rigged. After a certain number of months in service, it would begin to ignore overpressure sensor readings while increasing pump output.

What resulted was perhaps the largest non-nuclear explosion in history, that caused significant damage to the USSR's internal natural gas pipeline network. And by corollary, to the Soviet economy as a whole.

Then, on top of this, but of the Soviets' own devising... Chernobyl.

I think that's pretty much universal. Once an original cast has been imprinted, and once the novelty wears off, interest declines. Unless it's a cartoon, the lifespan for most productions are going to be pretty short.

My best example would be M*A*S*H. No replacement character ever outpaced an original, and the series really wore you down with forced, gatling-gun paced comedy and bludgeoning supermorality. I can still sorta enjoy the Trapper John/Henry Blake era, but once they left, I simply cringe. I learned to hate the show as it approached its sunset. It, like most, simply wore out its welcome. The exception that proves the rule: Seinfeld. It was a fine wine.

392 My best example would be M*A*S*H. No replacement character ever outpaced an original, and the series really wore you down with forced, gatling-gun paced comedy and bludgeoning supermorality. I can still sorta enjoy the Trapper John/Henry Blake era, but once they left, I simply cringe."

When they made Hot Lips into a sympathetic character and Hawkeye went all '70's male, it got ridiculous.

394 Klinger and the dress jokes were funny.
The rest not so much.
Always thought it would be poetic justice to have the cast killed by NK special forces.
Except Klinger. He escapes by stabbing three NK's with his stilettos and choking one to death with his bra.

Col Flagg was a riot on that show.

I pulled up an episode with him on it recently...that guy was funny.

Exactly. A window into their awful lives and schemes.
Years ago--pre-internet--I moved out of state and registered as a D just to see what they'd send me in the mail. I couldn't believe how openly awful they were.

402 Yes, The Americans in its fifth season. Been watching from the start. Good show but I keep hoping the spies will get caught. Kind'a ironic, it'd be the end of a good show, but dang...catch them spies!!!

Nice to see I'm not alone in my under-appreciation of M*A*S*H.

Somewhat near Cheers in formulaic set-up punch lines. And Alda is often insufferable.
