Scene During The Eruption of Vesuvius
Joseph Franque

This melodramatic scene of a family trying to escape the A.D. 79 eruption of Vesuvius, a volcano in southern Italy, was inspired by the report of a French archeologist excavating in Pompeii in 1813. "A mother fled, dragging after her a part of her family: two daughters, and an infant whom she clutched in vain against her breast....The ash covered them, burying them all in the same tomb; their remains were mingled, and almost indistinguishable from one another." The report goes on to describe jewelry found with the remains, including the mother's earrings and the serpent ring worn by the standing girl.

I did make is to Ostia Antica which was the Roman port during the Republic/Empire.

It's a smaller, more lightly trafficked version of Pompeii with no dead bodies but plenty of preserved mosaics.

They contribute breasts, for cryin' out loud. Breasts are self-justifying.

I visited Pompeii ten years ago. One of the fun facts I learned was that casualties were relatively light because Pompeii was being rebuilt and most people hadn't moved back yet.

Rebuilt because it was destroyed by an earthquake sixteen years prior. It's as if Someone really didn't want that town there.

107 Grammie Winger, saw your post in the below thread about hair coloring...

Do not try to correct the color yourself, particularly since you want to go lighter. Going lighter means you have to lift color out of the hair first, and if you try to do this yourself, you will trash your hair. If you don't do it first, what you end up with by layering another color on top of what you already have will not result in anything you will be happy with. And you might fry the hair.

Go to a color correcting salon and pay the piper to have your color corrected. They might be able to simply tone your current color to make it more in the direction you like. Any salon that promotes their ability to color hair should have someone on staff with experience in correcting home color mistakes.

As my own stylist says, any stylist who has been working for a year or two will be faced with color corrections.

I get mine done every three to four weeks because if not, I would look like Emmie Lou Harris, and that wouldn't be a good look on me. Lots of discussion about trying to do my own at home....even my stylist says she won't do her own.

210 If obamacare is collapsing by itself, it seems to me letting it collapse is superior to GOPcare.

Lyin' Ryan doesn't seem to understand that when he says 'repeal and replace' what we heard was 'repeal, then replace', which is to say, replace with reofrms unrelated to obamacare.

Lies to say the mandate is being repealed.

Insists last election was about his 'better way agenda'.

It also seems to me that blowing this bill up neuters Ryan and the house leadership more than Trump, and is probably worth doing on that ground alone.

There will be one bill passed, and when it's done, the GOP will spend the rest of its time until Nov 2018 patting itself on the back for having 'done something' and expect us to reward them at the polls.

======================

I visited SF in '89. My plane landed at 4:20. I got to my hotel at 4:45. I took a trolley down to the Marina a few minutes before 5. The giant earthquake that set the Marina on fire happened at 5:05. I was stranded in SF for three days with no hotel (collapsed), no clothes (suitcase inside of collapsed hotel), no transportation (streetcars couldn't run) and no way out.

So, no.

the process and what can and can't be done with various different
legislative processes.

The first thing that should be done is a straight up repeal of everything in the ACA. Let the senators take the hard vote that will be used against them the next time they face the voters. Maybe you get a surprise from the dems up in 2018 and it passes, and then you're done.

Then, if you're not going to repeal obamacare in this congress, stop pretending that you're keeping your promise to repeal it. Pass individual line by line bills repealing each mandate separately, each tax separately, and so on with respect to every single thing in obamacare and prove in public what parts of it which congresscum are refusing to get rid of. And then run against them in 2018 so you have a congress capable of keeping its promise.

Seriously, have you been watching what has been going on in the Senate over the last 2 months? In what universe where Chuck Schumer has voted against the Senate Majorities wife, a woman who is extremely qualified for her job, do you think he is going to rally his troops to repeal a law they fought like hell to put in place and which their base will riot if they help repeal? It isn't going to happen.

People keep talking about how they already had a repeal vote last year. No they did not. They had a defund bill which is very similar to this one using the exact same reconciliation process. So if you want them to do what they did last year, celebrate, they are.

They are taking out all the funding processes for Obamacare including both the individual and employer mandate. They are increasing the speed and guaranteeing it will fail. That's what's really happening right now.

And they will be so surprised when half of us stay home in 2018
Posted by: Methos, back to Let It Burn at March 08, 2017 10:05 AM (3Liv/)

If you listened to Trump and the other GOP candidates through the campaign, they all said, Trump included, that at every rally, town hall, etc. they were told by those in attendance that they wanted any new health care bill to include forcing insurance companies to accept those with preexisting conditions and they liked being able to keep kids on their insurance until age 26 because so many college grads can't find jobs.

Go out and talk to your neighbors ,friends, etc. The vast majority will tell you that exact same thing. It's become a typical American thing, rail against government dictates and yet demand the government dictate when it benefits you personally.

If you all think these two inclusions in the current GOP bill are bait and switch, you weren't listening this past summer and fall. They have said all along that these two mandates would stay.

I do remember Rand P, and other's proposing to create high risk pools for those with preexisting conditions in order to satisfy that overwhelming demand from citizens.

Also, people keep complaining about how insurance should be free market, etc. There isn't an insurance market out there that is "free". All insurance is overseen by the government, typically the state. State's have insurance regulatory agencies that regulate how insurance is sold, what is offered in policies, how much reserve cash insurance companies must maintain, how much premium increases can occur each year, etc. It's basically a government function funneled through private companies who can profit to some extent.

Remember the health care insurance analyst who regularly called into Rush during the Obamacare passage and subsequent lawsuits? Her calls were very eye opening on exactly what the Democrats were doing to existing insurance companies with Obamacare in order to pave a path to single payer. And exactly how incredibly regulated insurance companies were.

I think they are doing this because the Freedom Caucus keeps insisting on a straight repeal vote which will fail. There is no way in hell you are getting 60 votes in the Senate no matter how many times people keep saying it will happen. Now that is kabuki.

There are not 8 Democrat Senators who would vote for it and there are at least 4 Republicans who say they won't do it unless there is some measure that deals with Medicaid so you are right back at square 1.

366 I have to defend Diane von F. I was writing fashion copy at the time of her wrap dress, and it was a godsend for working women, very much as Ivanka's clothing line is today. At a time when women's only serious choice appeared to be frumpy suits with ribbon ties (remember, ladies? Ugh), her dresses had clean lines and good strong prints, reasonably priced, and by sheer force of personality, she forced them to be taken seriously. Good for her.

I know nothing about her politics.

373 333 Here's an example of what repeal looks like if anyone is serious about repeal and not just playing games to keep as much as they can get away with:

Section 1. The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.

Section 2. The transportation or importation into any State,
Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use
therein of intoxicating liquors, in violation of the laws thereof, is
hereby prohibited.

Section 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall
have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions in
the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years
from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.

That passed with at least a 2/3 majority in both chambers of congress and was ratified by 3/4 of the states.

---
Then there's no point doing anything.

Unless you prevent coverage of preconditions, either at the government or individual insurance company level, there is no possible constraint on claims against the company, which means there's no upper bound on the rates it must charge the people who are actually buying insurance rather than demanding someone else pay for their known medical expenses.

Which will eventually bankrupt each company, and the federal government (which is more likely to take the form of the destruction of the dollar).

At which point, neither this, nor any other political discussion, matters.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at March 08, 2017 10:41 AM (ELUpj)

Exactly. Insurance became tied to employment because of wage and price freezes dictated by Roosevelt. In order to try to compete with other companies to secure the best employees, companies that could afford it started offering medical care payment assistance. Then it really rolled into place with the large industrial unions, until every company had to offer health care insurance in order to either attract employees or were dictated to do so under collective bargaining agreements.

And so here we are today. Trying to continue the coupling of insurance with employement, while also reducing costs for the employer and employee, while covering those who don't have a job.

It's impossible, but we are still trying to do it.

=========================

It'd be nice if the government simply ended the tax protection of employer directed health insurance, but that's politically impossible (tax increases!).

Extending that to individual coverage is a step in the right direction.

I don't think I'd want to go this far, but forcing insurance companies to keep employers and individuals in the same risk pool.

Eh, the single biggest problem with insurance portability is really the fact that the real cost of the insurance is hidden from the employee. The employer usually pays at least half of the premium, and while they may tell their employees about it once a year at open enrollment, it's not something that employees know about on a gut level.

470 Here is my take on healthcare policy. You can call me cruel, heartless, hateful, I don't care. Here goes:

This nation will never progress (in a true fashion) while the "poor" drive every domestic policy decision. Period. Why is it that the baseline for any domestic policy is always what's best for the poor? The poor are like a drowning person - they will pull you down with them, whether they intend to or not. Then, on top of that insanity, we are importing more and more of it everyday! We are told there's something wrong with us if we don't think importing the third world's impoverished masses for all us to go to work to support is not at the forefront of our lives.

That being said, I don't have issues with providing health services for those who are genuinely disabled and/or unable to provide for themselves. That is a totally different story. But it seems to me, in my observation, that the "poor" they always trot out and focus on is some 30-something woman who is not married with four kids who either makes $25,000 a year or doesn't work.

Guess what? I don't care. Not my problem. Perhaps she should have thought about that before she let a man ejaculate inside of her. But of course, carnal pleasures always must be provided for first and foremost, hence the millions of abortions every year, the never-ending fight over PP and birth control....plus CHIP, food stamps, welfare, the list is endless.

"Healthcare" or "insurance" or whatever the fuck it is at this point will always be a problem when the Welfare Class gets to drive and decide policy. It seems like the people who take responsibility for their own existence and pay for all this shit are always getting fucked because they aren't as noble, valiant or hardworking as the "poor."

I try to ignore the spin on both sides and just look at the facts. 504 Never happened and I challenge you to show me one time a clean repeal bill, not a defund bill that went through reconciliation, passed the House and the Senate.

And here's the crux of your constant one-man campaign to defend the sacred honor of the GOP. This semantic argument designed to mudfy the issue ... along with your chaff about "process". So let's blow it up and be done with it.

Obama vetoed a reconciliation bill to repeal most of it on 1/8/2016 ... per the CNN article I'm looking at right now. Per Paul Ryan's quote ..

"But here's the thing. The idea thatvObamacare is the law of the land is a myth. This law will collapse under it's own weight, or it will be repealed. Because all these rules and procedures Senate Democrats have used to block us from doing this ? That's all history. We have now shown that there is a clear path to repealing Obamacare without 60 votes in the Senate. So, next year, if we're sending this bill to a Republican president, it will get signed into law."

So instead of this newest clusterfuck ... all they need to do is run HR 3762 to the President ... like Ryan said then. HR 3762 is eight pages long.

Reconciation ? Process ? I don't care. Ryan talked repeal. At the time, the Party of Stupid called it repeal. That's good enough for me.

The jig's up Jack. People see the GOP for what it is.

This.

Ryan lied then or he's lying now, and in any case the expectation among GOP voters was that the GOP promised repeal.

Ryan's refusal to do that is a break of his promise in the eyes of the voters no matter how much propaganda he puts out. And it will have easily predictable consequences at the polls in 2018, just like the last time the GOPe held all three branches of government and sought to screw us all over.

508 >>And here's the crux of your constant one-man campaign to defend the sacred honor of the GOP. This semantic argument designed to mudfy the issue ... along with your chaff about "process". So let's blow it up and be done with it.

So in other words, what you have been saying is wrong and instead of trying to understand what is happening you just want to accuse me, someone who isn't even a Republican, of being a RINO or something.

It is beyond idiotic to say "Hey, let's just let the entire insurance industry to collapse and then somehow it will magically remake itself" and I don't want to do idiotic things. Neither does Trump who has been saying this exact thing for some time now. And there is no way to get a straight repeal vote through the Senate no matter how many times you scream about it.

I don't give a shit whether you like the process or not. It is the only way to get this thing started whether you understand it or not without blowing up the filibuster completely and making the Senate a smaller duplicate of the House and as a Constitutional Conservative I don't want that.

So scream all you want and blame me. I could not give less of a shit.

Worse ... he gave the GOP an excuse. And an excuse to them - and their enablers - is better than catnip.

They never wanted to pull up Obamacare "root, stem, and branch" like McConnell famously said. They needed Obama to veto their shit. Just like they need the Senate Fillibuster since they have majorities in both Houses and control of the White House. How in the hell would they blame Democrats then ?

Posted by: ScoggDog at March 08, 2017 11:19 AM (nw6G5)

510 People don't appreciate what a thumb on the scales of cost the Medicare and medicaid programs put on pricing - the demands made to give the government a "best" price a certain percentage below their standard rate led to, you guessed it, inflated rates.....
that can be forgiven (often the forgiveness is taxable as income) but not offered at discount equivalent or less than what Medicare and medicaid are billed.

Almost single handedly THIS is what created the worst cost shifting shell games in the industry, and penalized individuals without insurance to the maximum degree possible.

If there were a single health care law change, I would suggest making a law saying that anyone accepting medicare or medicaid patients may not bill any uninsured person more than the medicaid and medicare rate, and may bill LESS. (With lower rates before or after the bill is sent NEVER being treated as taxable income.)

Talk about bending the cost curve down.

---
There's nothing idiotic about it, and it may in fact be the best available outcome.

If the insurance industry disappears, the robber barons of the medical industry will have no way of hiding their pricing scam and the prices ofr health care will drop to what customers can pay out of pocket (and uneconomic 'care' will disappear as well) resulting in greater efficiency. At that point it won't matter whether the insurance industry, who let's remember doesn't actually produce anything of value, revives itself.

It will suck if your nest is getting padded by the graft (either as part of the industry, or poor choices in your stock portfolio) or if you need some of that uneconomic care, but for most everyone it would be a tremendous improvement

But it's really not. Again, it's semantics. They are gutting the mechanisms that pay for Obamacare with this reconciliation bill, making it implode faster. Call it repeal or killing the law or whatever, it is going away.

If the Republicans had 60 votes in the Senate they could do a straight repeal assuming they all voted for it. But they don't. They have 52. And there is not a chance in hell that 1 let alone 8 Democrats would vote to repeal it.

So this is the route, the only route, reconciliation. And again, it is the exact same route they used last year when everyone was calling it repeal.

He clearly doesn't understand.

The 60 vote thing isn't a Constitutional requirement. It is a mere Senate rule. And the majority can change the rules of the Senate any time the choose to, as they have regarding judicial nominations.

Maybe they have to make the change for every type of business they deal with, but the process for changing the rules is the same.

And given the dem's willingness to ignore the filibuster when it suited them, there is no reason to keep it regarding any business, unless senate repukes want an excuse for their failure (which is far and away the most likely explanation, as it has been their driving motivation for six years now).

Posted by: Methos, back to Let It Burn at March 08, 2017 12:13 PM (3Liv/)

547 Regarding the bitching about RyanCare- yeah, I would prefer more too. But on WMAL this morning, Susan Ferrechio explained that the repeal is broken into 3 parts. is the first. It addresses everything that can be touched under reconcilliation. That is important, because under reconcilliation you only need a majority in the senate.

Second part is through executive order. A lot of stuff was just made up out of whole cloth by Sebilius, and with Tom Price as head of HHS it can all be undone.

Third part is trickier. It will require actual legislation and will either need to be negotiated with the Dems, or wait until after 2018 and see if we have a supermajority.

Yes, I too wish we could wave a magic wand and go back to 2009, but we need to deal with the facts on the ground. I also wish I trusted the feckless GOPe...

And they aren't going to because they don't need to. They have a process without blowing up the Senate rules which would be a horrible thing to do. If you think not, ask the Democrats how much they like Reid's going nuclear on federal judges now that Trump has the ability to seat over a hundred of them using the same 51 vote majority rule.

The Senate was designed from day 1 to give the minority some power. As a conservative, I want it to stay that way because sure as shit the liberal will be back in power some day.

Why do you care so much about process instead of the end result?

Posted by: JackStraw at March 08, 2017 12:17 PM (/tuJf)

549 I prefer the Freedom Caucus approach to Health Care. But whatever is decided should be on a clean up-or-down vote.

There are 11 supermajority requirements in the Constitution and the 60-vote filibuster is not one of them.

The filibuster is an un-Constitutional supermajority requirement instituted by Senate rule, not by a legitimate amendment. Yes, the Constitution gives the Senate the right to set it's own rules, but it doesn't give them the right to amend the Constitution by those rules.

It is already impinging on the American Health Care Act. To avoid the filibuster, these provisions must be passed separately at a later date:

buying across state lines, removing insurance regs, reducing drug costs and legal reforms to cut cost

...and that's if these provisions aren't successfully filibustered then.

The filibuster didn't stop Obama's One-Man Treaty with his Ayatollah. In fact, it was the filibuster that prevented his Unconditional Pre-Emptive Surrender from being stopped.

Obamacare was passed with 51 votes. But we can't replace it with 51 votes?

And if Democrats can't get the votes for their extremist positions, they simply write crooked executive orders or have their judges legislate them from the bench.

The filibuster is tradition and it does offer some protections to the minority party. But that is far outweighed by the damage to the principle of majority rule and the opportunity for obstruction. It also thwarts accountability for senators by muddling the whole question.

Let your yeas be yeas and your nays be nays, and live with it.

It was passed on December 24th in the middle of the night with 60, count 'em, 60 votes. Only later did they use reconciliation, the same damn process the Republicans are using now to undo the financial underpinnings of Obamacare, to put those financial underpinnings in place.

There's nothing horrible about it. There is no value in giving the minority in the senate some power IF IT ONLY IS EVER GUARANTEED TO THE DEMOCRATS.

The rest of your statement is dishonest and you know it. There is not a single voter anywhere in the country who flipped in a senate race based on Reid nuking the filibuster. Democrat's losses under obama were because their policies were bad either in effect, or alien to American moral norms.

You implied the dem's senate losses were in fact a result of Reid's nuking of the filibuster, or more laughably that they blame their losses on it. I've seen no reason to believe either is true.

The hypothetical polls your citing (which I don't doubt exist, but we're not referencing one) would almost certainly show that judge concern is primarily among people who wouldn't vote for dem senators anyway, and is only part of a larger universe of alien values that progressives have sought to impose on us.

In any case, that is not a legitimate excuse for keeping the filibuster in place.

Your argument has now boiled down to 'they're not repealing obamacare because they don't really want to' which was the point I was trying to make all along.

If they did, they wouldn't be dicking around with this silly defund approach. That made sense when the strategy was to use Congress' power of the purse to force an enemy president to give up something he wanted, but it failed because the cowards in congress wouldn't stick with the shutdown and see it through.

Now that there's an American in the White House, there's no reason at all to be taking the power of the purse approach. Just pass the repeal, changing the senate rules if necessary (because let's remember, it's not just about getting rid of it, but walking on the democrats to let them know they *can* be punished) and let Trump sign it into oblivion.

Then and only then can we have a discussion about what sorts of things we want to do to improve competition and efficiency in the health care industry. And the insurance companies can remodel themselves around that. Or not. They aren't the primary concern.
