The Morning Report 3/8/17

Ocare.jpg

Good morning, kids. Loaded for bear with tons of linkage today. Well, as we had suspected, Ryno-Care is a 62-page f*ck you to the American people. Aside from slapping us down, it preserves Big Government Bureaucracy and, if signed into law as it is, will absolve Democrats of the responsibility they have had since 2010 in the hijacking and destroying of our healthcare and health insurance industries. All the suffering will be blamed on the GOP as well as the taking away of the goodies (never mind that these never existed; they will be portrayed as having existed). The other thing is that the Rynos will use this as the excuse to declare the Trump presidency a failure and primary him in 2020. You heard it hear first. That said, the voices of dissent in the party, Paul, Jordan, Gohmert, Lee, Cruz and others are proclaiming it DOA. Unfortunately, Mike Pence is happy with it and supposedly PDT as well. I hope this is just fake-out theatre. Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

6 I'm sure the usual suspects will be along soon enough to lecture us that this is the best Ryan could do and how we proles don't understand how DC works.

Well, I knew PDT would disappoint me at some moment. Just didn't think it would be quite this soon.

And spare me the lectures about how we need to make sure the RINO scum who vote for this monstrosity need to be primaried and thrown out of office. Hear me now and believe me later: not one worthless, CoC-fellating GOPe nickelfucker will lose their re-election bid over this.

Not.

The propaganda mill will effectively portray this - if it passes - as all the Republicans' fault. Plus, we will have disaffected voters staying home. The really disheartening thing I read (maybe Breitbart) was that Pence approves of this thing as perhaps does Trump.
I hope not.

re TFGCare 2.0, Conservative Treehouse is claiming/explaining that 1.0 cannot be fully repealed because that would require 60 votes in the Senate. I guess if true that would be why the stupid gubmint insurance requirements built into 1.0 cannot just be dumped.

The current proposal may be dead in the water already, with 4 R Senators expressing opposition (we have 53 Rs, and no Dems will vote for this bill).

This plan will seemingly do little except (1) give the hounds of Hell ammo to trot out their legions of disenfranchised people whose healthcare will be stolen by wicked Republicans, and (2) gently remove the Obamacare noose from the neck of the Democrats and put it around the throat of Republicans.

I shouldn't vent because I really can't bring forth an informed critique of the plan. But it doesn't take a politician to see the exact narrative JJ put forth unfolding.

103 The repeal bill passed in Jan 2016 was much better than this junk they are proposing now. That bill passed the House and Senate and made it to Obama's desk when he vetoed it. It dismantled 90% of Obamacare (exchanges, subsidies, medicaid expansion, etc.).

This new proposal does not "repeal and replace" but "reforms" Obamacare. Taking as it's baseline the entire conceit that underlines the failed program.

111 Repeal Obamacare entirely.

(If killing the filibuster is required, so be it.)

Then start with a new plan based on Republican principles (I know, I know) and conservative principles, and what they hey, Constitutional principles like federalism.

The new plan should be about 10 pages long, emphasize and encourage the free market-

and give states the right (though with zero federal monetary support) to provide any deranged version of healthcare which its citizens alone are willing to support.

Done and done.

Then we know who gets the credit and the blame and we can stop hearing about "fixing" Obamacare or "running it more efficiently".

148 136 Repealing Obamacare without a replacement could cause the insurance agencies and Medicare to automatically dump everybody. Insurance companies look for any excuse to cancel policies and charge the customers more when having to sign back up. They make money off of a crisis.

Let's not give them an excuse to dump millions if not 10s of millions of our countrymen.
Posted by: Widespread Pepe at March 08, 2017 07:43 AM (2qHjF)

Maybe that's not such a bad thing. Maybe there would be insurance companies that might say, "hey, we'll take you and at 50% less than what you were paying before Obamacare!" And then another company will lower the price to 40% and so on, and so on, an scooby doobie doobie.

I believe it's known as the free market, and competition.

Create a product that people want and they will beat a path to your door.
Posted by: J.J. Sefton at March 08, 2017 07:47 AM (mbhDw)

I'd love to believe that huge corporations love the free market, but the insurance company lobbyists wrote Obamacare. They also have received bailouts in the form of 0% interest rates, access to loans others can't get, QE, a TARP, not passing a budget since the bailouts, and bloated budgets.

The free market ship sailed when the markets and our GDP collapsed and never recovered in the year 2000.

I don't think I've even been alive long enough to remember a free market

A couple of reasons:

First, it's hard to get anyone to work in the hours that the restaurant is closed, so that operations aren't disrupted.

Second, if you hire a professional electrician to do something like this, they always seem to find something else that needs to be fixed before they can do the actual job.

I have a crew consisting of one "handyman" and what should have been his assistant, but this guy's skills fell far short of his boasts. So, after he screws with something for an hour and it still isn't finished, I need to scale the ladder and finish it.

You betcha. But this should be done period, not just to force OCare on the turds in DC.

One thing about Trump and OCare -- One of his campaign promises was to 'repeal and replace' with 'something that will make everyone happy' or somesuch rot.

But Trump is busy keeping his promises, he's made that a central tenet of his presidentcy, and so there will be a 'replace' advocated by him.

But making everyone happy makes any Mission Impossible mission look like a walk in the park.

207 I just noticed that I still had the Book Thread open in a tab .... aha ! I was keeping it open to re-read this inspirational post:
"508 A lot of people (including some here) are going to look back one day at how miserable they let the Left make them in the aftermath of Trump's election, and wonder how or why they ever succumbed, even for a minute.

The Left, using their media cohorts, is playing the same game they've been playing for a damn long time. It's called the Make Good Americans Miserable game. Understandable with Bambi in power, but now? Nah.

And yet it's working on a number of us. It's pure psy-ops. Trump is one layer, he's the big fish they'd love to bag, but they also mean to weaken, disintegrate and destroy our movement.

Meanwhile, Trump is playing the Make American Great Again game, and the "fundamental transformation" is already well underway. This country is about to experience a resurgence most of us never thought possible. We WILL be united again, in prosperity, and the Left will be where they are most comfortable. On the sidelines, spitting venom and wallowing in their own sick mental misery.

So try to forget the "narrative" and remember that we won, and that the Recovery Decade is coming despite the Left's best efforts. They shot their wad with Hillary. They fucked up. Whether you believe it or not, Trump knows what he's up against, he loves this country, and he has its enemies within fucked eight ways to Sunday. Sit back, relax and enjoy!

He may have levied a serious accusation, but he is demanding that the government (read Congress) upholds its responsibility to conduct oversight on the Intelligence Community.

So to continue the "no evidence" narrative does not help your case, I suspect the President has more than just a few news reports which imply (NYT, WaPo and Guardian) that the US Gov't did indeed conduct electronic monitoring against US persons.

Agreed. But with the rate of inflation being sky high for decades and getting worse, the government protecting these companies growing unsustainable profits by not enforcing anti-trust laws on the books, and government helping to protect the 10 fold increase in insurance costs since 99.... What incintive do insurance companies have?

Do you really believe the large insurance companies who are used to making all of that money with the help of the government will take a 40-50 percent haircut in the cost of premiums to insure the exact same amount of people?

No they won't. It will never happen because there is no free market, we haven't had one since forever, and insurance companies profit off of controlling DC, state governments, using the government to run a protection racket by not enforcing the laws on the books.

They will scream for a multi trillion dollar bailout before they budge an inch in taking a haircut.

Not saying he doesn't agree with their aims and isn't happy to help. He does and he is. But he's not the driving force behind this. The Deep State is using him towards their ends.

Just IMHO.

235 Yeah, it has the RINO stink all over it. Doomcriers will hopefully forgive me if I say that I think this is long-game stuff, showing intra-party amity and so on.

I fear Rush is right when he suggests that because there is so much $$ to be made with the federal gov't being involved in this huge sector, it really translates down into a simple fact: Congress has deep pocketed donors biting at their heels to keep this in place. We all know this.

I think this pig is here to stay, in some Frankenstein's monster fashion. No way in hell anyone is going to dare take away subsidies or come up with another plan for pre-existing conditions. They don't have the guts. Half the GOPe won't even support President Trump on much of anything as it is. That's how sorry they are as a lot. Insurance companies will continue to sink, albiet slower perhaps. When nothing is left but the burning embers of what was once the greatest healthcare industry in the world, there will be nothing left to do but a complete single payer gov't run healthcare system. Since everything else has been tried, and all...

"Cheap" Obamacare is costing me thousands more per year. So, F'em if they have to pay more.

The market will bring down the price for everyone like it always does.

In the end, everyone will pay less and have the insurance which they actually want.

If that sounds heartless, well, sorry, your "low prices" are crippling my efforts to support my family, provide for college educations and my eventual retirement.

But, DC in this case is more like Las Vegas.

Obama is tired old news for most of us. But, for his fans- the MSM and Dims- he's still a star.

So, like Celine Dion or Elton John, he has a nice fancy house in "Vegas" for when he's in town to sing his greatest hits.

He makes "the House" a lot of money with his warbling so he makes a lot of money with little effort.

Otherwise, he's out of town.

No, they passed Obamacare in two goes. The first was with 60 votes in the Senate and the second was without the 60 after Teddy was "repealed by God and replaced by a Republican." This is what is frustrating the effort to actually get rid of it. Totally doing so requires either 60 Senate votes or going completely nuclear and turning the Senate into a 100 seat House.

What is being put out is up for negotiation but reconciliation limits what can be done. Since much of Obamacare is "the Secretary may-shall-will" much can be done by Price to change it but must be done without the chaos that the Dems never have to worry about.

that isn't how it was done, J. J. The Dems used their 60 vote

passed the Senate version, without changes, because if it had gone to
conference it would have required another 60 Senate vote and they had
lost that 60th vote when Brown won in MassiveTwoShits.

No.

They used reconciliation--reserved only for budget bills--to pass the final version in the Senate with 51 votes.

By replacing the text of a budget bill previously passed with the text of the Obamacare bill passed by the House.

I'm not sure that budget bill was passed with 60 votes.

I have done this before, one thing that will help is a clarifying shampoo, redken has one and so does neutrogena. I washed my hair 3 times a day with it, even leaving it on for a bit, and it did help lighten the dye, and I did mine dark brown, so I'm pretty sure it would help lighten a blond color. No, actually the economy, at the bottom, is that simple with simple market forces.

What it can't be trusted to do in that mode is to guarantee the cutouts and special treatment Paul Ryan, Lobbyists, and all the other important people get.

I would like to see you pay less in taxes too. But you won't under this regimen.

Actually that is a lie, under this regimen, eventually you won't be paying that tax bill because you won't be able to earn that much because Congress and ACA has sucked all the money out of the system to line their own pockets.

I would invite you to ponder alternate paths since it might profit us all

Trust me, you are not the first. I've gone it to myself, too! I've tried washing it to within an inch of its fragile life and when you're dealing with permanent color, or semi to a degree, it's not coming out.

I think the good news is that you went darker, which seems like you'd do less damage (less peroxide) and be able to get it recolored or highlighted to lighten it up and fix it. Maybe they could warm it up and then add some highlights. You may just turn out to love it!

Instead of heavily penalizing the middle class for working hard and following the law,

This is a BIG DEAL because the National Vulnerability Database and other government datasources is what security pros rely on to protect their customers.

Obama promised not to hide any discovered security holes. Then his CIA began compiling and hiding security holes for their own use.

And they are now public.

That's true, but he seems to have greatly misjudged the reaction from his own caucus.

We've sent members of Congress to the House who won't accept this approach, and they weren't brought on board the process to help smooth the bill's acceptance before release. Also, it's odd to start this negotiation, which is really with all of Congress, from such a "centrist" point instead of a more extreme one.

Perhaps it'll lead to the passage of Stage 1 and then much more conservative versions of stages 2 and 3 that Congress actually passes. That could be a good way to end this.

I just think that because Ryan didn't involve the conservative wing of the party in the crafting, this is going to die on the floor.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at March 08, 2017 09:10 AM (ELUpj)

429 >>They could have done a lot differently in order to make this rollout smoother. Hell, I think they could have rolled out this exact bill had they actually involved the more conservative members of the House with it.

I don't know about that. Politics and posturing.

But there are a lot of things people seem to want done immediately that flat out can't be done in budget reconciliation. About all they can really do is cut takes and mandates. The rest has to be done through normal procedures which is why they keep alluding to phase 2, 3 and perhaps beyond.

I think a lot of these guys forget that not many people understand or care to understand some of the byzantine workings of Congress.

Why does anyone believe ANYTHING that the Obama-fellating, Hillary-win-predicting press has to say?

Status quo ante. Feet in concrete.

436 Serious question:
How many Democrats from conservative districts are left?
I think they'd need 15-20 to make up for losing the Freedom Caucus as a whole.

I just think for the long game, ANY "fix" to Ocare is enough to chain an albatross about the neck of the Republicans. "OUR PLAN WAS PERFECT!!! If it hadn't been for those meddling kids, we would all be in tall cotton now!!"

But that would be the move of a party actually determined to help their country.

443 429 I don't know about that.

Posted by: JackStraw at March 08, 2017 09:10 AM (/tuJf)

==================

People not caring about process? Unpossible!

I understand the break between the parts of the ACA that can be taken out with reconciliation and the parts that can't (in concept, not necessarily specifics).

I'm mostly just talking about the politics. The conservatives of Congress have felt, for a very long time, that the leadership didn't care what they had to say, and here comes one of the most promised, storied, and looked forward to pieces of legislation in the past generation for the Republican Party and....they cut out the conservatives.

They even threatened to force the vote saying that no Republican could survive in his own district after voting against it.

That's hubris, and I think the response is nemesis. They're going to look very foolish when they can't pass it.

And then some hours later:

3. It's not done yet! More to come!

It's just not a good enough story. I fully expected Ryan to sell us out on this one, and this still looks like that's what he's doing. If they have a three-part plan, I want to see the whole thing before they start passing the bits and pieces.

There are going to be non-stop negotiations for the next couple months and what we have now is not where we are going to end up.

Congress sure doesn't seem to know. A downside of that, though, is that that process can then get dragged on forever as the opposition party does everything it can to undermine the bill in progress.

An article that pissed me off this morning is several schools in the northeast -the article says "dozens" -have declared a "Teacher Work Day" because they were informed by the bulk of the teachers that they were not coming to work. Now these worthless bitchez are getting PAID to no show their fricking JOBS and parents are having to scramble to find alternative day care etc for their kids with short notice. This is TAX money paying assholes to not show up for work!
Where do these school superintendents think this money comes from? Heaven?

500 488 With their super-majorities in the House and Senate it took the Democrats over a year to pass ObamaCare. And in the end they had to use the reconciliation maneuver, which meant that the law passed wasn't actually intended to be the final product, it was just as far as they could get.

I know everyone wants this gone seven years ago, but Congress is the opposite of progress.

===================

Other than wanting the ACA to die a horrible death, I don't have strong opinions about the speed of the repeal process.

I dreamed of a clean repeal bill sitting on Trump's desk on January 20, but knew it most likely wouldn't happen.

I also understand the horse trading that needs to go on to pass something that will get through two chambers of Congress and get the president's signature.

I want it done right, and if it takes a day or the entirety of the 115th Congress, then I'm good with it.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at March 08, 2017 09:31 AM (ELUpj)

501 >>They had six years to work this out within the caucus. I'm not clear how much longer they could possibly have needed.

I know that sounds good but it's not really true. The only reason they have returned to regular order is because Ryan took over for Boehner and that didn't happen until October of 2015. So more like a year.

And it did happen last year when the House announced, and ran on pretty much this exact same plan. Not many noticed because the Presidential election was a hell of a lot more entertaining and let's face it, almost nobody thought Trump was going to win. If Hillary had one, we'd be having a much different conversation right now about how to stave off single payer which I would assume they were planning for as well.

I'm gonna wait a few weeks and see how this plays out before lighting my hair on fire. With the mandate gone, Medicaid going back to the states control, the end of all the Obamacare taxes, etc. as a first step and Trump promising interstate insurance sales as part of one of the next steps this could work out ok.

561 If there is truly going to be any progress on "Repeal and Replace", Congress needs to pass one bill, first.

Amend Obamacare to REQUIRE all federal elected officials, AND THEIR STAFFS, to obtain their health insurance through Obamacare.

I see a large problem seems to vest in the fact that, of all of the individuals working on Repeal and Replace, none have any skin in the game.

They will dither on, endlessly, attempting to divine which inflection on this or that aspect of government funded healthcare give-aways will garner the best news headlines and the most votes in the mid-term election.

But none will give a rat's ass about how ordinary, tax paying folks, those going through this health insurance wasteland without subsidies, have been harmed and continue to be harmed by this catastrophe.
