Interesting: To Prove Gender Bias, a University Had a Male Actor Read Hillary's Debate Lines, and a Female Actor Read Trump's. The Results Were... Unexpected.

It was an experiment in, ahem, "re-gendering" the debates. A male actor would play Hillary's role, but renamed "Jonathan Gordon." A female actor would play Trump's role, renamed "Brenda King."

The actors rehearsed to try to mimic each actual participant's cadence, body language, gestures, and facial expressions.

People assumed that the experiment would prove Hillary lost the election due to her gender.

People were surprised to find that assumptions to be wrong.

"I've never had an audience be so articulate about something so immediately after the performance," Salvatore says of the cathartic discussions. "For me, watching people watch it was so informative. People across the board were surprised that their expectations about what they were going to experience were upended."

Many were shocked to find that they couldn't seem to find in Jonathan Gordon what they had admired in Hillary Clinton--or that Brenda King's clever tactics seemed to shine in moments where they'd remembered Donald Trump flailing or lashing out. For those Clinton voters trying to make sense of the loss, it was by turns bewildering and instructive, raising as many questions about gender performance and effects of sexism as it answered...

They did have to change a little bit about the debates, like Hillary saying "When I was First Lady" (wouldn't make sense to have the male version of Hillary say that), but otherwise the actors attempted to duplicate what actually happened.

Here's a short clip, maybe of a rehearsal or something. Or maybe it was just staged in small rooms. I dunno.

Here's a killer quote:

We heard a lot of "now I understand how this happened" -- meaning how Trump won the election. People got upset. There was a guy two rows in front of me who was literally holding his head in his hands, and the person with him was rubbing his back. The simplicity of Trump's message became easier for people to hear when it was coming from a woman--that was a theme. One person said, "I'm just so struck by how precise Trump’s technique is.

More proof that they've literally gone crazy, that they're reacting like this to having some small-beans mental applecarts overturned.

If you can't take this minor prick of your assumptions, what the hell can you take?

It seems to me that Hillary's gender actually covered up her flaws, such as inauthenticity, scriptedness, recitations of pablum, and fake-smiling, while, when she was played by a male actor, those flaws were suddenly very visible to the people who think of themselves as "gender-woke" but maybe should just think of themselves as gender partisans.

Though I have to also admit: Another effect of the gender reversal is to make Donald Trump's aggressiveness and bluntness sound more reasonable and less grunt-bark.

It could be that the gender reversal revealed that a lot of Hillary's aggressiveness towards Trump was actually aggressive, which had been missed when it was a woman acting aggressively towards a man. And likewise, Trump's less frequent aggressiveness seemed really aggressive when it was a man speaking to a woman, but seems much less so when performed by a woman speaking to a man.

So I also have to admit, the stuff they claim that the performance will provoke people to "rethink the complexity of easy gender assumptions" might not be as total bullshit as their total bullshit usually is.

Thanks to @zakn.

89 The lady playing Trump didn't sound shrill either.

There's a lot more that happened, of course. Hillary disappeared for large parts of the campaign, the stroke in NYC, the empty canned stock answers, and even she bought into the idea that she was going to steamroll Trump because woman and zomg can you believe Donald Trump?

Also no theme. Bill kept hitting on this behind the scenes, apparently, that you've got to have a message. The tween faggots running her campaign snarked off Bill. Big mistake. Billy is a sleazy guy, but he's a master politician who won two presidential campaigns. Ignoring the truth bombs he was dropping was a YUGE mistake.

"People assumed that the experiment would prove Hillary lost the election due to her gender.

People were surprised to find that assumptions to be wrong.

Many were shocked to find that they couldn't seem to find in Jonathan Gordon what they had admired in Hillary Clinton--or that Brenda King's clever tactics seemed to shine in moments where they'd remembered Donald Trump flailing or lashing out.

The simplicity of Trump's message became easier for people to hear when it was coming from a woman--that was a theme.

***********

Maybe it wasn't gender. Maybe it was just partisanship. Maybe if they would have had a man *who wasn't Trump* giving Trumps speech would have had the same effect of being articulate and persuasive.

Because the real Trump is Emanuel Goldstein to the left, a focus for a three minute of hate, or what not.

155 So... a bunch of safe spacists were surprised to learn what we've been saying since around 2001: the ONLY reason to vote for Hillary is because she is (allegedly) a woman. Heck, even Hillary's campaign knew that. In 2008, the only time she did well in the primary was when she started weeping and playing up the exploited woman schtick. In 2016, what was she going to run on? Resetting the Cold War? The Middle East going from emerging, relative stability when Bush was exiting to the utter chaos as rise of that JV team, ISIS? Her absolute opposition to using the military to overthrow and kill dictators without the consent of congress? The increase number of domestic terror attacks?

Even running on the woman card (pantsuits, cankles, etc. notwithstanding) it is appalling that the wife of an impeached womanizer who has paid out millions to hush up sexual abuse victims and has done more than any other woman in history to silence, slander, and discredit female victims of sexual abuse was not laughed out of the country or strung up in a public lynching like the increasing number of business owners who speak like normal people in private.

What else did she have? Her lack of corruption? Honesty? Engaging personality?

So many people are so hung up on their "causes" that they're completely blind to the fact they they are promoting and supporting the exact things they claim to be against.

Regrettably, this blindness isn't limited to Hillary defenders.

It's really interesting. Because the actors are trying to mimic the candidates's gestures and tone, too, you get a gruff, slouchy, masculine woman arguing with a prim, irritating man. (And at that point, it's kind of hard to tell how much of one's negative reaction to the man-playing-Hilary is because it's a *man* doing it... and how much is because he's imitating *Hilary*. The Hillary analogue, without the 'womyn!' myth surrounding him, came off as what we saw her as.

The Trump analogue, without the 'MALE PRIVILEGE!' BS, came of as what we saw him as.

The libs take their false valuation based on trivial characteristics and add/detract weight based on them.

175 In news that matters to me (TM), the liberal freakout has finally gotten me off facebook. Someone in my feed posted an angry denunciation of Carson after his HUD speech. I pointed out that his language referred to "A Nation of Immigrants" by John F. Kennedy, from 1958, and was told that JFK was wrong too and that slaves didn't come here seeking opportunity.

I went back and looked up the definition of immigrant again and didn't see anything about opportunity, just the actual definition of the word, and I found that both Obama and Shaun King (the "Black Lives Matter" guy) have both called us a nation of immigrants, and they meant it inclusively, just like Kennedy and Carson did, and then I realized that it was a stupid, useless waste of time to write all that. I like the pics people post of their kids but it was just getting too hard to wade through the stupidity and grade-A freakouts to see those few posts. I'll use the FB time to do something else constructive.

Pretty much all social research needs another layer of researchers on top of it, researching the researchers.

It's turtles all the way down!

Pretty much everyone needs a "check yoself" filter in this day and age, so they don't do things like attack Ben Carson for comparing slaves to immigrants and then realize they *should* have been attacking him for plagiarizing Obama having said so repeatedly.

I'm not sure what part of that is more disturbing. The idea that hummable lyrics are considered superior to true, factual information or the idea that anything Hillary said could be considered remotely true or factual.

Heh. I'm guessing that, for most, the real version of Clinton came off as anything other than feminine -- be it male, beastial, vegetable, or mineral. As a heterosexual male, I'm really happy about that ...

Yes, but everybody seems to acknowledge the leaks themselves are illegal. The MSM isn't upset about that, because the leakers are whistleblowers and heroes to them.
The issue is whether the spying on Trump associates had any real justification, or if it was politically motivated. Obviously it's the latter, but the MSM will keep deflecting, and when it's finally revealed, they'll say, "Oh, that's old news."

205 This has a lot to do with the previous thread, as far as I can see. It's how liberals have a Dunning--Kruger effect with their rationality.

It's the same reason that they are unimpressed with the idea of conservatives fearing a backlash by the left. (First of all they really might enjoy the idea of "jerks" on the right getting beaten up a little bit) It's because the left views itself as the rational, educated side of politics.

Conservatives are REACTION. We're -ophobes, driven by fear, and aggression--which comes out of having made ourselves so fearful. Obergefell put traditional society mores down to "animus". They believe we're the ones that might snowball out of control, because our reactions are step-wise and reasoned measures, but REACTIONS to reality encroaching upon our parochial world.

The liberals like the lofos on their side, because they have a virtue. They nudge them into a new society and the really adaptable ones adapt. That's what they prize.

But not the people Donald Trump champions. No. They want to "roll back the clock". They can't adapt, thus they are more dangerous to all the good that progressives are trying to do in this world. They insist on their principles, and refuse to have principles taken out of their hands and replaced with others, like docile children. And they throw tantrums like cranky babies.

Hence the cranky babies are far more likely to flail out against the docile babies or the parents of society.

And then it's just confirmation bias all the way down. Until something like this comes along.

Yup.

One other thing that always confuses/ irritates me about these "debates". They're always screeching about "acceptance" and "inclusiveness" on one hand, then demanding segregation and increasingly detailed classification into groups and sub groups on another

When at work or while in public, we are all expected to behave according to polite, professional standards that facilitate diverse people getting along effectively and enjoyably.

I don't care if you're gay. If I'm out having dinner and don't know you, it even less of my business or a concern, however, if you show up to a nice restaurant dressed like RuPaul and screeching show tunes at the top of your lungs... you have chosen to make a spectacle of yourself. The issue is no long my lack of tolerance or inclusiveness. You've gone out of your way to let your freak flag fly and not be included in polite society. Your choice but the problem is no longer mine, it's your unreasonable demand that everyone on earth conform to you while you make increasing efforts to exclude yourself.

When I was little, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. Unfortunately I am 6'4", nearsighted, and amusement park rides that going into rapid rotations do have an excruciating effect on my head for some reason. So, adults informed me- correctly- that I would never be a fighter pilot.

Back then, this was called common sense and responsible adult guidance. If this happened today, the same people would be taken to court by the child, shunned by society, and several civil rights groups would be suing fighter plane manufacturers for not accommodating tall people who can't see well and failing to make planes only go in straight lines.

They call this Progress.

I don't know if you saw my reply to you this afternoon, but one on my cats had surgery last week and the cost was $795.04. That's for everything: surgery, anesthesia, lab work, 1/2 day hospital stay, and a follow-up visit.

I just wrote a check and paid it. No insurance. The insurance industry is part of the reason human medical care is so expensive. Nobody knows what any procedure costs. In this case the vet gave me an estimate beforehand, ranging from $650-$850 depending on what she encountered during the surgery.

I bet the same procedure for a human would be a great deal more.

299 #293: But even the "insane" people (college liberals) who watched this show actually got it. The article says some of them broke down in tears as they realized that, yes, Trump was just the better candidate.

Some of them likened the female Trump to someone like an aunt or a school principal who you're not terribly fond of, but you know she has your back and you can count on her.

301 I know this is at the tail end of the comments section and the viewing will be scant, but the last sentence of the article linked (and authored by some NYU faculty/staff/student) states:

"This has really emerged for us as a tool that could be quite powerful,
and I would love for people beyond the liberal, academic audience to get
to experience it too. "

Zoom in

"I would love for people beyond the liberal, academic audience"

Closer

"beyond the liberal, academic"

These people know full well they are in a liberal, academic bubble, and that many legitimate, breathing, thinking persons exist beyond that bubble with legitimate points of view that differ greatly with their own. They know full well that they are attempting to subjugate or destroy anyone who doesn't think like they do. And they call us fascists.

If any of you haven't watched it, do.

Posted by: Beverly at March 08, 2017 01:47 AM (V32F+)

308 The NYU (really liberal) audience's reaction has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with the fact that Trump's opponent's, particularly those on the left, view him as the personification of all terrible things. On the flip side, they imbued Hillary with a lot of positive characteristics she didn't deserve. The visages of presidential candidates are cultural totems these days, so substituting their faces for those of random actors gave this audience (which I'm assuming was filled, overwhelmingly with liberal Dems) some much needed distance from their visceral hatred of Trump's face (and reflexive love for Hillary's), allowing them to see that Hillary was unlikeable and didn't have a reason to be running other than blind ambition, and that Trump has a point that things haven't been going so well a lot of Americans lately.

You could test my theory by trying this little experiment on an audience of people who are Trump (and/or Hillary) neutral, and my guess is it would have zero impact on their views of the respective candidates.

I'm Trump neutral (Rubio fan, Cruz voter in primary, and no vote in general), and I found the woman to be annoying because she was doing Trump-y stuff. Not as annoying as the Hillary-man, who did an excellent job of being stiff and not human and weird in the same way Hillary is.
