These Men Who Have Written Books Have Silenced My Own Ability to Write a Book

A lot of -isms -- racism, Islamism, feminism -- seem not so much concerned with lifting their Favored Groups up as knocking Disfavored Groups down.

Even if you're a racist or sexist, as leftist identity politics groups are (but we're not allowed to say that), shouldn't your focus be on giving a hand up to your own group, rather than hobbling the hated out-groups?

PS, in the time it took these idiots to turn all these books around, they could have written or mostly written the first draft of one chapter of a novel, with only 24 or so more to go.

Just like the way they enter Gender Studies departments to write endless autoethnographies about the barriers keeping women out of STEM programs, instead of, you know, just entering a STEM program and Defeating the STEM Patriarchy.

This seems to be a failing of those who use a religion as a means of bullying other people: They talk a lot about what other people should be doing (or not doing), and not so much doing (or not doing) those thing themselves.

But you do you, militant sexists. I'm sure the whining about not writing your novel will help conjure that novel into existence.

There is no point crying about this attempt to shut down dissent and police both thoughts and speech. It's what converged organizations do; they are more interested in your submission than your business. Pointing out their double standards and hypocrisy will accomplish nothing; they know they are hypocrites and they consider it to be a virtue.

Tsk, tsk, tsk.

People, we live in a world ruled by emotionally unstable liberals.

What is inside does not matter at all.

Substance is utterly irrelevant.

It's what's on the surface is the only thing that counts.

Like... transgenders. They're biologically one sex and claim they are the other. In libtardworld, Style (what they say they are) always wins ove what Substance (biological reality. )

Another example: Did you know that men get periods? There's a childrens coloring book that states just that.

Objective reality (is a book good) is meaningless compared to subjective reality (does this book parrot my strange fantasy based beliefs?)

Posted by: Buck Turgidson at March 07, 2017 03:17 PM (C+qQ0)

Well, I would.

Bookstore story time!

Right when the Brokeback Mountain movie was coming out, I was at a bookstore buying that week's allotment of yaoi. As I was checking out, the cashier said all knowingly "Ah Brokeback manga" and he obviously thought he was being all supportive and whatnot.

I went still and mute for a second because there was a woman with a child a register over and thus I could not begin screaming. The guy must have seen the look of horror on my face because he was all did I say something wrong.

And that's when I informed the store, in increasing volume and pitch, just how homophobic is the Brokeback Mountain novella because it's not a novel at least Carrie had the decency to make it obvious that the newspaper stuff was slammed in there to make it novel length as opposed to the clear padding in Brokeback not that it was ever good in the first place and did I mention that the book hates its characters and they are horrible human beings and the ending is flat out idiotic and it is not queer positive in any of the way and saying it is is insulting and do not even get me started on how Annie Proulx however it is you say her name and I refuse to learn because she doesn't deserve it is no kind of feminist and both she and her work are immensely overrated and if the author hates her characters so will I and that's not deep it's stupid and

When I paused for breath the guy was all oh thank God I thought I was the only one who hated her. And then we bonded over how people mistake nihilism for depth and he sold me the next couple of volumes in one of the series I was reading that weren't supposed to go on display until the next week.

I managed not to swear in front of the child though I think the arm flailing scared it a bit.

288 278 This seems like the time to point out that no one made the owner of the store buy all of those books by icky icky men.

If there is some kind of gender imbalance, it's due to the choice of which authors to stock.

Now. A challenge.

Go to the YA section. Turn over all the books written by women. Now turn over all the books written by men but who feature a female protagonist.

Oh. Look. There's, what, three books written by men with a male protagonist left?

300 Just like the way they enter Gender Studies departments to write endless autoethnographies about the barriers keeping women out of STEM programs, instead of, you know, just entering a STEM program and Defeating the STEM Patriarchy.

This is so stupid, I can't believe it. I have female cousins and a niece who are engineers and chemists. This isn't all recent either. I have female cousins who went into chemistry and engineering back in the seventies. When I was in college '68-'72 there was a girl in engineering on my dorm floor and another who was going for CPA.

Far from being barriers keeping women out of STEM, they are being actively encouraged in these fields.

304 I can't understand the logic of the "women's movement" bitching that women are "strong" and "empowered" and can "do anything a man can do, only better", but then turn around and treat them as if they complete idiots unable to fend for themselves.

My experiences with women have taught me that this is NOT true.
---

I work in a very male dominated field. When I started in the late 80's, the ratio was probably 25 to 1.

Over the years, I've worked with a lot of feminist I can do anything a man can do but better women. They are angry liberals who MUST prove a point. Can they? No, they cannot. Women have a different muscle/ fat ratio than men, and there are certain physical tasks women cannot do. However... the women I know.. persisted.

And the men we work with despise them and will NOT help them.

Personally, I think we all have our strengths and weaknesses, and value the men I work with. I help them, and when needed, they help me willingly. And we have a positive relationship.

Sarah Hoyt had a very interesting discussion about how TPTB in publishing houses decided that cozy mysteries were just not to be read because they were just not important literature but the market will be heard and thus cozies were churned out as "craft" mysteries. She wrote three about a furniture restorer and then held off until the rights reverted to pick up the series again and she's self publishing all of them.

339 Quick name the top earning authors of all time, just the top ten.

Here, I'll do it for you
1. Agatha Christie
2. William Shakespeare
3. Barbara Cartland
4. Danielle Steele
5. Harold Robbins
6. Georges Simenon
7. Sidney Sheldon
8. Ednid Blyton
9. J.K. Rowling
10. Dr Seuss

Hmm of the top 10, 5 are women, and of the top 5, 3 are women. One of them lived 400 years ago.

In fact in the last 20 years, the best selling authors have largely been women; Rowling, Stephanie Meyer, E.L. James, etc.

Here's the top 10 selling authors of the last 10 years:

1 J K Rowling 29,084,999 £225.9m
2 Roger Hargreaves 14,163,141 £26.6m
3 Dan Brown 13,372,007 £74.1m
4 Jacqueline Wilson 12,673,148 £69.9m
5 Terry Pratchett 10,455,397 £77.2m
6 John Grisham 9,862,998 £65.9m
7 Richard Parsons 9,561,776 £49.2m
8 Danielle Steel 9,119,149 £51m
9 James Patterson 8,172,647 £53.8m
10 Enid Blyton 7,910,758 £31.2m

Four of them are women, and the number one is a woman.

The truth is, women are not underrepesented in writing, and in fact dominate publishing and literary agencies.

350 Getting a writing contract as a woman is easier than as a man for two reasons: this kind of BS "equality" push, and women controlling publishing, and pushing their own gender. Chick Lit is a big seller, and women authors dominate that. Look at what publishers are asking for, and what agents want from writers, its female-focused stuff (romances, etc).

What they do not want is even more significant: superheroes, cowboys, cops, detectives, fantasy, etc. Male-typical and male-interest writing they want no part of.

I know this, because I spent years trying to find an agent and reach out to publishers. Eventually I figured out that I was better off self-publishing, even though I got interest and some nibbles from agents.

363 I have a woman boss who is significantly younger and less qualified than I am. But she was hired by her boss, also woman. Grrrl power.

Meh. My job is pretty good, and I personally like my female boss, and she does a semi-decent job despite being under qualified. I've had worse. I have tried to look out for her, and support her. And she is getting better after 6 months on the job - I fear she will never be "great" (she doesn't have the technical skills), but she can definitely be good enough, which is all most of us can ever hope for.

So, by all means feminists, explain this misogyny thing of which you speak. These words...seem strange to my ears...

I believe the best writing of Flannery O'Connor and Muriel Spark, easily stand up to and equal in quality the best writing of 20th Century males.

Flannery O'Connor is probably already part of 20th Century canon for American authors anyway.

Gah, I never could stand O'Conner. I always thought she was a self hating southerner who did her best to convince the rest of the country that the south was inhabited exclusively by sociopaths, grifters, and imbeciles.

Objective truth is a patriarchal construct. If women are not oppressed then their unhappiness is due to their own decisions, and that means personal responsibility, and that means agonizing self-recrimination, and that means calling over girl-friends, and everyone sharing a good cry, and then several quarts of cherry ice cream, and then further guilt for lacking self-control, which leads to pancakes, and then more pancakes, and then the jeans won't button, and then HOLY SH*T! Does the scale actually say that? and then more agony, and then anger as they pummel their soft, yielding flesh into those jeans, and in between painful short gasps for air and listening to organs becoming strangled they focus like a laser on the true source of the problem.

Men.

Agreed Shibumi and I don't mean to indicate that women, in general, can do the same physical labor as a man (the biggest reason they should NOT be in combat in my opinion.

But the ones who CAN, DO and the ones who can't find other accommodations. Truth is I've been lifting stuff for women all my days.....hell, I was taught to do that (I know, I know patriarchy etc etc).

My only point is that, like all leftists, they want it both ways......either women CAN do anything a man can do a should just put up or shut up, or you CAN'T and need to come back here to the planet earth and get out of the damn twilight zone.

I'm not a writer like (it seems) everyone else at Ace's place is, so I know I don't communicate as efficiently as some....but mostly its just the double standard from the left that pisses me off and I think is why (especially) young, white males are freaking confused as hell as to who they are supposed to be.

420 The deal is, what has taken us (women) so long? The reason is that men and women have been willing partners in life to raise children, maintain hearth and home, and prepare for future events as a family unit. It is feminists who deny the reality and general success of human history through the family. Women were every bit as unsupportive of other women stepping outside cultural norms as were men. Even today when finally subjected to female leadership after 43 years in a male-centric industry, the insecurity, hatefulness, and pure spite was something I never experienced from men. The worst that occurred from a few of them was arrogance and limited expectations. Most of the guys were thrilled and relieved by my job skills, very supportive and happy to leave me to it. The relief came from the arcane nature of my department rules generated and evolving from antique government regulations. They didn't have to worry about it because I took care of everything.
