More Fireballs from Lee Smith: If Trump Is a Russian Agent, How Come the Village Voice's Gossip Columnist, Who Covered Him For 40 Years and Had a Network of Informants, Has Nothing About It In His Files?

Trump didn't rise out of nowhere with no college transcript and no who knew him in college like some presidents I could name.

He was a public celebrity -- we didn't particularly want him to be a public celebrity, but he was pretty insistent on the point -- for about forty years now.

The guy seems to even have informed on himself just to get bad press, which, to a spotlight-seeker, is good press.

So: with 40 years of extensive digging on this headline-making, misbehaving fame-chaser, how come there's no Russia Connection in his background?

There are three parts to this essay, which is a bit long. If you don't have time, let me tell what each part is about:

The first part is about the Village Voice columnist Wayne Barrett who died the day before Trump's inauguration. Smith used to work right next door to him at the Voice, and wants to know why Barret's files, and the files of all the assistants and junior reporters working under him, are barren of Russia Connection information.

The second part -- the most skippable -- follows a break from the first part, like a ***. This part is about how the media essentially died in the Internet age, due to making bad economic decisions (such as giving away their product for free just to get on to the internet, which then priced their product at zero point zero dollars). This led in turn to their having to jump into silly clickbaity bullshit just to chase eyeballs, and hire a bunch of young idiots who literally knew nothing.

As Ben Rhodes described them, in explaining how easily he got the Echo Chamber to repeat the words he said to them.

The second part segues directly into this last part, the closing, about the media's utter lack of professionalism or institutional quality or integrity. Having priced their reportage at zero dollars, they had to essentially become blogs with occasional dispatches from the Washington office, and turned into Jezebel: The Print Edition.

So if you have to skip, skip out in the middle (I have no idea if his theories about the economic missteps of the media are correct), but do read the intro and ending. The ending begins with, "In January, Bannon told the New York Times..."

69 Now add this to what Andy McCarthy wrote about how the two Russia theories do not hold together and you see that the media and the Democrats have got themselves into a little pickle. Namely - if there is all of this juicy information on Trump and the Russians how was it acquired? If it was done using national security warrants, who signed off on tapping/intercepting a presidential candidate? If there is no actual tapped/intercepted information then why are you spreading fake news?

And by Trump accusing Obama they cannot quietly let it go (Mr. thin-skinned Obama won't) and they cannot say that Obama was doing stuff that would have gotten Nixon impeached after he resigned, so they are left with...fake news?

Hmmm. It seems crazy, impulsive, out-of-control Donald Trump has a Mark IA fire control computer.

85 Rhetorically, because there is no proof. It's a political invention.

The problem is that as the desperate Hillary Camp went chasIng a distraction on Trump, someone with Russian connections, probably Podesta got kicked in the balls by the Good Idea Fairy.

They hung on the fact that someone, probably starting with Manafort, had Russian connections. Knowing extensively about Russia Podesta and probably his brother decided to try and hang a false Russian scandal on Trump. They used the knowledge that Manafort has Russian connections combined with a national security directive to monitor anything Russian to attempt both the first and second FISA requests. The second was probably granted because they narrowed the search and had some proof that Manafort had some contact with the Russians (as innocent as that might be it still provided cause). They hope while digging around all the servers and comms they would unearth something to destroy Trump.

They didn't and the new problem is he won. He's now in a position to uncover everything that went on. My guess is some of it is illegal or at least systemic abuse. Problem is it is also classified as it is connected to intelligence gathering and unlikely to be release.

Short version. They are now trying to cover their asses for something they thought would never see the light of day.

This part is about how the media essentially died in the Internet age, due to making bad economic decisions (such as giving away their product for free just to get on to the internet, which then priced their product at zero point zero dollars).

I actually liked the second part. It made me nostalgic for the community feeling that reading print journalism used to give me. The Voice, the New Yorker, Interview, even the Daily News if I thought no one was looking.

Then again, maybe I'm just nostalgic about living in the city for my twenties.

I'm not sure that the lack of Russia info in the extensive Trump files means anything. Did Barrett actually do investigative journalism for his files or just catalog all the juicy tidbits that came over his transom?

(That's an actual question, I don't know. Also I'm not giving credence to the Russian puppet proposition).

Covering Trump back in the day meant sifting through the stories that he planted about himself. Was it a coincidence that one of the "scandals" was was Marla Maples saying how good he was in bed? This is a guy who posed as his own press agent to call in stories about himself without even changing his accent.

====================

Everyday I thank the Lord that the MSM's power is diminishing.

I read Kurt S.'s (I'm not spelling that) most recent article at Townhall and he filled in the gaps with my theory on media power.

The media is still powerful enough to produce narrative, but no longer powerful enough to control them once they're out in the world. If the narrative is built on a falsehood, it falls apart a lot faster than it used to. If the narrative contains Democratic hypocrisy, it blows up within days if not hours.

All of that to say that it's getting harder for each attempt at a narrative from the media gets harder to have stick in the country's consciousness. Maybe they know this and are flooding the zone in response, hoping that no individual story sticks but that the constant drumbeat sticks.

According to polls, though, that tactic does seem to be losing effectiveness and more and more Americans are tuning them out.

I do wonder how this whole thing plays out over the next 12 months.

Heh. Your A Team idea is immensely tempting.

No joke. Some years ago, a friend of mine and I seriously explored forming "The Bitchslap Brigade".

The premise was simple: People go to our website/ social media, etc. and tell us, "So and so needs to be bitchslapped" and gives us their story (free content, web traffic, etc.= ad dollars= mailbox money). We pick the most worthy (least likely to result in litigation of some sort), drive over, bitch slap said offender, and post the video on our website/ social media.

When we get bored, we let the copy cats take over and collect our mailbox money from their volunteer work.

I like this business model you got there.

We make $$, and the Bonus Part is: We help people while hurting those who need hurting.

But still, it's worthwhile to understand some of the non-ideological constraints on the MSM today, particularly if you want to manipulate them.

And we MUST learn to manipulate the MSM to have any hope of neutralizing (and hopefully castrating) them.

You've probably never seen the phrase "seeming to imply" in the lede of a story in a major American newspaper before --- a news story. So did Trump imply, or seem to imply?
How are readers supposed to parse "incorrectly" if the story is about
the reality of riots in a place where Trump "seemingly" "implied" there
was violence? So what's the point --- that Trump is a racist? Or that Trump
can see the future?

246 Interesting, long read. The point about Barret is just another nail in the coffin of this ridiculous, unhinged conspiracy theory. That said....

I dissent.

There absolutely is no truth that the media became a propaganda organ of the Democratic Party when Obama became president. It's been that for at least a century. It only gets caught now due to the new media, which actually is the mainstream media these days.

As recently as the time just before Dan Rather was exposed as a liar and fraud, the Democrat/opposition media would have taken out Trump with this lunacy. The police state agencies of the Banana Empire would have fed and shaped intercepts with the opposition media, which would have run with it, and then the Democrat Overlords would have started a faux investigation that was a prosecution.

They can't do such a thing any longer, and the odds are greater that members of the former Obama Administration will die in prison after espionage convictions than Trump will do anything more than laugh at the communists as they collapse and die.

253 Wasn't WikiLeaks supposedly a Russian tool to help Trump? This latest intel disaster certainly doesn't. Another fake talking point bites the dust.

Congressman Devin Nunes , 2013: "This wiretapping incident, essentially, of the House of Representative. I don't think people are focusing on the right thing when they talk about going after the AP reporters. The big problem that I see is that they actually tapped right where I'm sitting right now, the Cloak Room in the House of Representatives."

Maybe if Brennan, Holder, Lynch and Obama had spent more time doing their jobs instead of playing politics with national security, this WikiLeaks debacle might have been avoided. Not to mention the previous Snowden debacle. But they were too busy wiretapping reporters, Congress and Trump.
