Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | How to Survive In the Age of RageJust in case people don't get this: I'm not being rhetorical when I say that a large fraction of the country, on both the left and the nevertrumper/GOPe side of things, has gone insane. The world feels like a Twilight Zone episode to them -- the world they went to sleep in on November 8, 2016 was not the same world they woke up to the next day of November 9, 2016. Parts of it looked the same, but nothing looked quite the same. The feeling they have is the horrific, creepy feeling of the uncanny -- a feeling that things look normal and familiar from most angles, but you can't shake the sense that there's something off or alien about them. A classic trope of the uncanny is the automaton or doll which appears human, or, even worse, the human who appears to be a doll. (Content warning on that -- very creepy.) They feel that they are in a nightmare. If you've ever described a nightmare (or just a dream) to someone, you know it's full of stuff like "And you were there, but you weren't you, and I was at work, but it was also high school..." It's weird precisely because familiar stuff appears unfamiliar, and what we usually experience as solid, steady, unchanging terrain -- like our workplace --is now a shapeshifting landscape. They were wholly unprepared for the reality of Trump -- they never even prepared themselves psychologically for such an outcome, because it was inconceivable and absurd, and only Dumb People thought stuff like "Trump could win," and as they're fond of telling you, they are definitely not the Dumb People. And now that that verity, that one important keystone of Empirically True Reality has shapeshifted into spiked jello they did as a shot at a frat party, anything could be true, and anything could be false, and that's a scary place to find oneself in. Remember how shellshocked and benumbed liberals were after 9/11? Oh we all were, don't get me wrong. But they were shellshocked and benumbed because it wasn't just 3000 Americans that were slaughtered that day, it was all their sacred religious pieties and all their smug certainties about how the world really worked. Americans experienced the shock of sudden almost-inconceivable horror on 9/11, but progressives experienced something even worse: The feeling that they'd been wrong their whole lives. We lost two towers and 3000 people that day; they lost their comfortable fictions and pretenses. They had it worse, actually. And I'll keep saying this until the day I die: They weren't really all that bothered by the loss of life as they were by the loss of certainty. The loss of that feeling of superiority. They got it back soon enough. Within a year they were back to being very confident about all their fictions and very superior about all of them. Within a year, they were certain of the progressive cause again, and were back to fighting against the Colonialist White Power Structure. But the Trump Terrorist Event -- the fact of Trump's victory -- hit them much more deeply than 9/11 did. They didn't just lose two towers and 3000 people on Election Day. On Election Day, most knew Trump had won, but still held out hope that Hilary wouldn't concede or that Detroit would suddenly "find" 100,000 uncounted votes. November 9, 2016 was when the actual SMOD -- reality -- hit. They lost their feeling of control and power over America. And believe me, after 8 years of Obama, and with the social and cultural winds at their back, able to gin up social media hate-mobs against anyone who even said something they didn't like, and able to sic the IRS on conservative groups and get away with it scot-free -- they felt like they were in total control. And they were right to feel that way: They were in total control. And now that's gone. November 9, 2016 -- the day they realized it was not a nightmare, but a reality akin to a nightmare -- was the progressives' 9/11. Just as real Americans felt the loss of security and control over their own fates that day, so did progressives feel that on 11/9. What you're seeing from progressives now, and the media, is the same sort of urgent fury you saw from real Americans after 9/11 -- an anger that a great evil had been done, and honor demanded furious retribution. Many people might have gone a little round the bend after 9/11. I think I did. In fact I know I did. I'm not proud of that, but neither am I too ashamed to admit it. At least there was justifiable cause. And now a great evil has finally shaken the progressives in the same way-- they lost all three branches of government. And they've gone crazy. In my experience, there is nothing quite so dangerous as an inflated but brittle ego. An inflated ego which is resilient is annoying and dangerous, but, being resilient, it does not really react bigly to threats. It shakes threats off, so it doesn't need to lash out or go on little Nervous Breakdown Picnics out in Ego Protection Park. But large brittle egos do. Large egos lash out, and brittle ones -- ones that are easily punctured by pins -- must lash out aggressively, constantly, almost randomly. 11/9 stole from them the two things most sacred: their sense of superiority and infallibility, and their precious political power over the people they hate. And they're reacting rather poorly to that. The daily hysteria, paranoia, conspiricizing, meltdowns, tantrums, out of left field accusations -- these are not signs of healthy minds. We are used to saying X Derangement Syndrome but I really think there is some actual derangement going on. And I would like to tell everyone reading: Please do not give in to it. Do not let their sickness become your sickness. When they panic, do not let their panic cause you agitation. It's normal that that should happen -- that's how panics and mass hysterias spread, one infected person spreading the disease through pheremones and weird, alarming psychic energy to the next -- but try to insulate yourself from it, and keep telling yourself, "This is their hysteria, they are trying to spread it because crazy people resent the sane and want everyone to share their delusions, to validate those delusions. Their claims meant little to me when they were speaking them to me in a much more rational, lucid state of mind; they should mean even less now they're firing all their fear synapses at once like some kind of broke-brain radio tower." Tune out when you fear you're being infected. Get off the internet, turn off the tv, and do something more productive, like reading, or, if worse comes to worse, your actual job. Quarantine your mind from the infected. I don't mean insulate yourself from news -- I mean insulate yourself from the welter of crazy paranoiac emotions flowing from these sad nutters. The news will still be posted six hours after the Babbling Breakfast Club's daily 8am to 12pm freak-out, when you can digest it in a calm state without all the screaming. Not every take needs to be a Hot Take, and certainly not every thought has to be had in an atmosphere of mental pandemonium. Men and women think best in the quiet and stillness. Many writers and religious thinkers advocated doing their work at night, when there was the least noise and bustle. These freak-outs are going to be daily. A friend of mine posited "this should be over in a month and a half," but I don't agree -- I think it will be going on for eight years. Yeah -- eight. That's gonna take some adjustment on our parts if we want to keep our calm and bliss intact. Let not your mellow be harshed. They are making noise and pounding the table precisely because they don't have the facts and proof they are sure is just around the corner. If they had the facts, they'd've already been leaked. They are attempting to get the herd stampeding by screaming about wolves just outside herd's perimeter. And yet, when we say "Where is this wolf you keep speaking of?," they tell us only that they have solid intelligence that an investigation will most likely prove the existence of the wolves. This is partly just an application standard public opinion information operations -- psyops -- in this day and age. The game is to make all sorts of outlandish claims and then demand that every person DENOUNCE WHATEVER BASED ON THIS INCOMPLETE, SKETCHY, AND POSSIBLY COMPLETELY FABRICATED CLAIM I HAVE MADE. The idea is if you can panic a few people to start running, then other people will start running just because the first few did, and then even the people who do not run off easy will start running because if everyone is running, one is a fool to stay in place. However, it's only partly that. That -- the running of deliberate psyops to shape public opinion -- is cynical to the point of being nigh sociopathic, but it's also rational. Evil, but rational. But most of this is just pure panic and delusion and paranoia and hysteria on their part. And hysteria loves company. Crazy people do not like being told they're crazy -- they do not like being told that they are not Napoleon Bonaparte. It is very important to crazy people that others see the world as they do -- otherwise, being crazy, and being captive in your own little cell of warped perspective and bad chemicals, is a very lonely existence. Pairs who experience the syndrome of follie a deux -- a madness shared between two (or several) people -- are inseparable and have a bond as strong as between a husband and wife, precisely because there is literally nothing more gratifying and sacred to a broken mind than finding another mind that believes in and validates all the same delusions. They're on the crazy train, and they're trying to sell more tickets. Decline to ride. Changed: Secret Square suggested that 11/9 -- the bizarro 9/11 -- would be better, so I changed it to that. To be honest, I was having trouble with this date in the first place. November 8, 2016 didn't really work, because it really wasn't till late at night -- on November 9 -- that Trump's victory was official. Good suggestion, Secret Square.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

America was a proposition nation. What happens to such a nation when the proposition is no longer shared? The left has decided that they no longer want to abide by the founding agreements of this country. There is no solution or persuasion in this fight. I don't think the left or the Vichy Right have gotten any crazier than they've been for the last 10 years. They certainly have gotten any nastier.
The big difference is that what they used to be able to do (attack their enemies) with the arms of government they now have to do by shouting and foaming at the mouth in public forums. agreements of this country. There is no solution or persuasion in this fight. We have become 2 different nations that want to live differently from each other. *** It is worse then that actually. Far worse. The left believes, fervently, they've found the path to Utopia. All those previous left wing, command and control attempts that failed? They didn't remake people to be "woke" and "socially conscious". Now they had 8 years of Obama. And we didn't actually get Utopia. However, the Republicans didn't actually *do* anything to stop him. They did however, say bad things and think bad thoughts. The left now believes it is these bad thoughts and bad words that are stopping Utopia. A national divorce would let the left back into positions of political power...but the people in Conservative America would still say and think as they will...so that would still stop the project of building Utopia. In fact the only way for the left to get back on track is to destroy the ability of people to speak and think outside of that which they will allow. That's what they planned to use Hillary's Russian war to do. And that's what they will do if they can get back into political power.... Posted by: 18-1 at March 06, 2017 02:14 PM (X7E8f) 47

You could also probably get all your big/home run posts together and make a fun 'exposing liberalism and how to survive their rage' type novella. Back on topic, what this election and Tea Party movement has done is threaten to utterly pop their little fantasy bubble where they are such good people and care so much. If and when that fantasy bubble is destroyed, it's either going to be James Taggart at the end of Atlas Shrugged or full on violence. They're already working on a coup d'etat. Hunker down. We're in the best position in years to address the deep state. The masks have come off so at least most of us can identify the traitors. Ivanpah. It's actually not a solar farm, it's a mirror farm that uses reflected sunlight to boil water and drive steam turbines. 28000 birds a year, according to some reports. You add that to the bird and bat kills from wind turbines and...enough of all that crap to run even half the country would kill every winged thing in the country. Washington warned us against the spirit of factionalism. In vain. America was a proposition nation. What happens to such a nation when the proposition is no longer shared? The left has decided that they no longer want to abide by the founding agreements of this country. There is no solution or persuasion in this fight. We have become 2 different nations that want to live differently from each other. Its really high time for that national divorce ace is always talking about. Posted by: Nurse Ratched at March 06, 2017 02:07 PM (pAeye) I've long thought that the answer -- to which we will arrive clumsily -- is the framework of federalism established by the Founders. If Massachusetts wants to let child-molesters marry farm animals, and North Carolina wants to require everyone to smoke, and California has daily naked yoga for all public employees, then so be it. Obviously, I overstate the case, but IF what goes on in Washington is not so damned important in everyday life, and the federal government sticks to what it was created for, then we will find a way to bridge these differences and even celebrate them. Do they really think we're just going to sit back and let them keep pushing?
*** That last time there was any notable push back to the left was...1994/5 over welfare reform. And if you want to talk about not just a one issue change, but role back on multiple fronts you have to go back to the 80s with Reagan remaking foreign and economic policy. When you've got 30 years with only one minor loss you get cocky and believe history really is on your side. This is part of the reason why I think a real Hillary investigation would have been such a good thing for the country - the left seeing their standard banner held to the letter of the law and prosecuted for violating it would have clearly shown their reign of terror to be over. Ace is spot on. Behavioral science tells us there is an actual physical fear response when one feels outside the herd. The left, through echo chambers and other means have been using this for years. Think about the moment it felt like 4 people in the US was against gay marriage. In the privacy of the ballot box they voted differently. We felt under seige. In reality i would rather not have gay marriage but am not really uptight that it happened. But it felt threatening. That was in no small part because we were left to feel outside the herd. The left was rocked back in November but they have refound their footing. WE are the ones offbalance. We felt we won, we have a safe SCOTUS , Congress in hand. Yet the left has us feeling under seige. It isn't black helicopters shit. It is simple echo chamber stuff a la medi matters and Rhodes. Understand that, realize the feeling is false and stand strong.

The thing about Gaslighting, is that the victim can wake up and realize that they are being lied to... that subjective reality is different than what they are being 'told'.
Now its usually some event that breaks the 'spell'... that makes the whole illusion shatter... some event that is just TOO weird... The Left has been gaslighting our entire country for about 40 years.... INLCUDING THEMSELVES... they are also locked into the insane delusion that they somehow with rhetoric can change subjective reality... So that event happens.... Like... oh... that Men and Women are not only the same, but that somehow you get to decide which one you are... orrrr... a Moslem screaming 'God is Great' tries to kill you in the name of his religion of Peace... but it has nothing to do with Islam... really... Or.... The Left, who believes in their version or Reality... gets bitch slapped by President Trump getting elected... Posted by: Don Q. at March 06, 2017 02:20 PM (NgKpN) 86

it was all their sacred religious pieties and all their smug certainties about how the world really worked.
Americans experienced the shock of sudden almost-inconceivable horror on 9/11, but progressives experienced something even worse: The feeling that they'd been wrong their whole lives. We lost two towers and 3000 people that day; they lost their comfortable fictions and pretenses. ... And I'll keep saying this until the day I die: They weren't really all that bothered by the loss of life as they were by the loss of certainty. The loss of that feeling of superiority. Exactly. This is exactly right, I keep telling people this. The fact that New York was hit forced the left especially in places like Manhattan, to face that terrorism was right in their heart, defying everything they believed about the world. The Poles have them in court. For some reason, all Germany's sunshine is in the north, and for reasons having to do with the mileage of Studebaker engines (and consequently, the range of B-17's), all Germany's industry is now in the south. Germany does not own enough wire to transmit all that juice every day, but they have the EU and its agreements. That means that half of Poland's wiring is melting down every day while the sun shines, moving Germany's electricity from Germany to Germany. Poland is not amused. Frankly, I blame 50 cycles. That's gonna take some adjustment on our parts if we want to keep our calm and bliss intact.
TBH, I'm always trying to peak behind the closed doors to see what Trump is really working on, which policy he's pushing and the EO's being signed. Somehow I've passed the hump of hysteria, and trying to find out what is really going on versus so many squirrels being smashed against the walls. I think it is because I'm half paying attention to the left and the nevertrumper's temper tantrums. I'm content in the elections. Relieved. Angry what they are trying to do to Trump and his admin, but overall, pretty happy we have a fighter in the WH. An American who is fighting for Americans. You know, a few years ago, I went on a long walk through a foreign country. Back pack, the works. And in the few places I did see news (in the bar at a restaurant) I couldn't understand it.
Anyway, after 3 weeks I came home. I found out about all the excitement, kerfuffle, squawking, and whatnot that I missed. and I realized it had been the best 3 weeks of my life. Also, 90% of the shit I missed amounted to exactly...nothing. Posted by: George Orwell's Ghost at March 06, 2017 02:28 PM (UgF8H) 147

The we have one evil party and another illigitimate party fighting tooth and nail against it's duly elected President and a Deep State willing to burn the whole thing to ground. It is hard not to get upset when the go into their la-la land of angry denial. But I guess they really are living in a different reality.
I don't remember if Ace linked it, but Scott Adams pointed out something similar a while back. Ben Affleck could not accept the concept that some Muslims are violent extremists when exposed to it on Maher's show, and Adams said that his inability to accept to concept affected his ability to even hear it properly. To Affleck, the statement that some Muslims are violent extremists mutated into *all* Muslims are violent extremists, and it was that notion he attacked. He was beyond making a straw-man argument, to him, the scarecrow was the reality. Just remember, talking to them like you would to a real crazy person, in soothing tones and reassuring voices, will probably make them even angrier. So by all means, do it. And I would like to tell everyone reading: Please do not give in to it. Do let their sickness become your sickness. When they panic, do not let their panic cause you agitation. This is what I am trying, and failing, at doing. I'm also trying to stop and ask myself is this how I was about Obama? Is this how I'm being about the Left? If President Clinton were doing the same thing would I be losing my mind about it? Sometimes I don't like the answers to those questions. This is where I bring up Pontypool yet again. If you haven't seen it, it's a very interesting zombie movie where the infection is spread through language. It's really a study of the madness of crowds and how an idea is an infection. It's based on the Tony Burgess novel and I think the film version is a better format for it than the novel as it streamlines the idea. I haven't listened to the radio play version. But, yes, the madness of the crowd is an actual psychological event and the dynamics of how and why are fascinating. I don't think they cared all that much about their liberal politics--it was the power that was seductive and fulfilling. And we took that away. We are facing pure hate and anger. It will not go away even if they get the power back. Because that will only remind them: We can never be allowed to ever take that power away from them again. November 8, 2016 was the progressives' 9/11. Just as real Americans felt
the loss of security and control over their own fates that day, so did progressives feel that on 11/8. Actually, for most of 11/8 (Election Day), voters were still going to the polls, progressives were still confident of a Hillary victory and many of us Morons (including myself) were bracing ourselves for what we thought would be the inevitable. It wasn't until very late in the evening that results started looking good for Trump, and not until well past midnight in the Eastern and Central time zones that Trump clinched his win. So it was actually November 9, or 11/9, that was "the progressives' 9/11" IMO . Posted by: Secret Square at March 06, 2017 02:31 PM (+HoK2) Posted by: DaveA at March 06, 2017 02:31 PM (8J/Te) 173

This is really good advice. Seriously, cut loose. Go a day or two without even looking at news or the internet. You'll find out how what loomed so big no longer does. I keep bringing this up but: what was the big outrage last week? What was the thing that made you so upset and tweet and comment and grit your teeth so much? The week before? I've long thought that the answer -- to which we will arrive clumsily -- is the framework of federalism established by the Founders.

A big part of the Panic of the Addlepates is-
the cynical use of Fake News by the MFM. I was forced by circumstances to listen to Saturday's ABC Evening News. It was literally, not figuratively, but literally, a paranoid barrage of anti-Trump insanity. Just koo-koo bananas. There wasn't even a token attempt at even-handedness. Mere constant attack. Millions of people use ABC's bizarro propaganda as their primary news source- it's no wonder that they feel panicked. I guess they're all Community Organizers now. Everyone on the Left. They just keep stirring and stirring and stirring the pot until everything breaks down. Trump and his people better get up to speed fast on this nonsense and apply the law directly to leftist and Dim big wigs and financiers where appropriate. A couple of high-profile scalps will do wonders for calming things down. Posted by: naturalfake at March 06, 2017 02:36 PM (vZ9Fw) 226

I still find it amusing, in a sad way, that the party which Loves Science Sexually doesn't get that the technology doesn't exist to make solar and wind as energy-dense and efficient as fossil fuels or, heaven forfend, nuclear energy. You can't run a power grid on fairy dust and unicorn farts.
---------------------------------- I've had a conversation with a few other people - mostly when they talk about getting electric cars, and solar panels to charge it. I tell them this: A gallon of gas costs about $2.50 where I live. Now, half of that is taxes, so the actual cost of the gas is approx $1.25. That cost includes what it costs to dig the oil up out of the ground, ship it halfway around the world, refine it, and ship it to the gas station. That gallon of gas will propel my car about 35 miles. that's about 3.5 cents per mile. If you can show me another source of energy that's that efficient, I'd love to hear about it. All I do for news is read a variety of sources on the Internet. Surprising fact. Sunny Germany generates 41.5% of its electricity from non-hydropower renewables (solar and wind).
Source: CIA World Factbook Posted by: Bandersnatch, gentleman cad at March 06, 2017 02:21 PM (gIRsn) I would believe that 41.5% of the installed generation capacity located inside Germany is renewable. I do not believe that the actual proportion of production is that high, more like 30%. It is dark half of the day, and the wind does not blow all the time. Imma go with this. 41.5% appears to be an alternative fact. As of the end of 2015, renewable energy sources, such as biomass, biogas, biofuels, hydro, wind and solar, accounted for 12.4% of the country's primary energy consumption, a more than doubling compared to 2004, when renewables only contributed 4.5%. and In total, renewable energy sources - solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass - produced approximately 185 TWh of electricity in 2016. There was no increase in production compared to 2015. Renewables thus made up around 33.9% of public net power supply. The share in gross power supply - including power plants in the processing sector, the mining sector, quarries, and excavation - is around 32%. Note that this includes hydro. "Sunny Germany generates 41.5% of its electricity from non-hydropower renewables (solar and wind)."
And it has made electricity for ordinary German ratepayers into what the German press refer to as "a luxury good". German heavy industry took one look at what the "green" _Energiewende_ was going to mean for their costs and competitiveness, and said, nein danke, we're out of here to China. Something like 400 factory complexes were due to shutter by 2020, in a country that's not geographically huge. Merkel panicked at the projected increase in unemployment, and told the corporate boards of Deutschland AG that they wouldn't have to shoulder the massive new increase. Instead, it would all end up coming from the pockets of ordinary German residential electric users. Which it has. Posted by: torquewrench at March 06, 2017 02:44 PM (noWW6) 285

No, but being purposeful about spiritual disciplines helps me immensely.

I've had a conversation with a few other people -
mostly when they talk about getting electric cars, and solar panels to charge it. I'm a 9/11 survivor and am not near being done.
After it was safe to come out in the open, I have watched the liberals do so. They've demeaned every sacrifice made on behalf of our country and turned it into something bad. Every single action taken to keep us safe has been colored as bad or unnecessary because it crushed every meme they peddled prior to 9/11. So they pursued it with maniacal vigor. Fuck them and everything they stand for. Meanwhile we've seen some of the most outlandish attacks on our democracy in the name of a poltical cult, using the weaponized bureaucracy and social shaming to carry it out. People are finished with those tactics and the people carrying them out. That's one reason you have Trump. Posted by: Marcus T at March 06, 2017 02:52 PM (gjdGN) 320

"'Biomass' = wood, garbage, and peat"
The huge Drax power station in the UK was converted from coal to "biomass". Because, hey, it sounded good, and the British chattering classes are just as keen on green virtue signalling and are just as technically illiterate as are their US counterparts. Here's what that comes down to. Drax is now fueled by wood pellets. That's the fetchingly titled "biomass". The wood for those pellets comes from forests being extensively clearcut in the southeastern USA, and the pellets themselves are then hauled across the Atlantic in enormous bulk-carrier ships running on nasty sulfurous bunker fuel. Over at my favorite -- the Rasmussen poll -- Trump is running "strongly disapprove" at around 40%. That's high. But Obama ran 40% to 50% strongly disapprove for most of his eight years. A big exception was the run-up to the 2012 election when Obama worked the memes that the economy had turned the corner, Al Queda was over and bin Laden was dead. This rage is their undoing.
I think a lot of people on the Trumpwagon, esp. those who were pro Trump all along are misreading the extent of the neverTrump crowd outside of Washington and government. The Beltway and Deep State fans are very scarce outside NoVA and Maryland. Finding Trump awful doesn't mean one can't find his oppenents from McMuffin the spy to Kamala Harris much more awful. And things like the Gorsuch pick and that, in my opinion, weirdly DLC speech the other night have opened up more minds. The less openly political the more it seems to be happening. Most of the rock ribbed chamber of commerce types, the libertarians, and the queasy religious true believers of the Russell Moore and Cardinal Dolan mold who found it too hard to vote Trump, are very turned off by the rage, and have been slowly in their secret places getting a "Trump on". Being a well know squish, after all I am all three of the above, I have heard the most surprising people declare a secret desire for Trump to hold firm against the media and donkey party. Some of y'all may love the guy, but sometimes hatred of those who would destroy the Republic in the name of a patrotism their every solipsistic act denies, may bind us functionally as strong. A lot of neverTrumper Republicans found themselves strangely ok with election night, sometimes even light headed, and as the hysteria against him grew they became more and more ok with it. I can say this as I was one of these by inclination who rallied to the party like the good Republican my grandpa taught me to be. He sucked it in for Wilkie and Ike, just as his grandfather sucked it in for Blaine and Harrison. I too sucked it in for McCain, but find I am starting to enjoy belatedly sucking it in for Trump. Every outrage makes me firmer. Posted by: Roy CT at March 06, 2017 02:59 PM (wdHQo) Posted by: VA GOP Sucks at March 06, 2017 02:59 PM (tVWQB) 376

True. The delusion part warps their thinking, but they still accept the outcome of their thoughts. It is like building argument on a flawed premise, except they can't accept the premise is flawed. It must be YOU that is flawed, for not admiring their "structure" which their fellow travelers so admire. In time many move into the "believe their own crap" trap and can't recall what parts were just "game theory". I've been saying --and commenting here---since November that the reason liberals and the media were so shattered wasn't because Hillary "lost"--or even that Trump "won", at least it wasn't the primary reason.
It was that Obama wasn't the center of their universe anymore. Hillary winning would have been much preferable to them, but it's still the absence of Obama that's killing them, so when Trump accused him of possible criminality, they collectively lost their shit. Hence Mika's breakdown. They don't even want to entertain the possibility that their president--Obama--"is a crook." Posted by: JoeF. at March 06, 2017 03:04 PM (7uYFy) 420

------- You might add, "...during the day." Inevitably, there will long periods of overcast, and of course, darkness, when the solar MUST be replaced by conventional sources. There is no way that solar can replace full-capacity conventional sources. There must exist as much conventional generating capacity as is required altogether. Moreover, as an example, our local coal-fired plant is now 51 years old. I don't know what the lifetime might ultimately be, but I would not be at all surprised if it could run another 50 years. Real men provide. Real women appreciate it. The usual suspect had the usual fits. Going into work today I saw that the billboard has been replaced and now says: Much Ado About Nothing. A social experiment that brought forth those so immersed in their own insecurity that in the mirror they could only see an angry victim of their incorrect interpretation of a silly billboard. Bless their hearts. The Bless their hearts made me laugh so hard I almost went into the other lane. For the record, I was not involved in any of this nor do I know who did it. But this ties into ace's point. The second I saw the first one, I knew exactly what would happen and it did and omg protests and calls to the owners of the billboard company to take it down and how dare they be anonymous and wah wah wah wah wah. While reading this, I couldn't help but think how much these melty-downers would gain by attending funerals more often. They should take a look at the ultimate victor in this world; view the Conqueror Worm in all its glory.
Just drop in at any funeral home, and gaze upon the dead. And then attend the wake if you can. See a part of reality that they don't seem to comprehend. See how people are when facing such finality. Perhaps it would help them to realize how puerile there little melt downs really are; how ephemeral their Most Important Thing really is. Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at March 06, 2017 03:28 PM (o7l6R) 558

This is fantastic and true. I'm not ashamed to admit that I was #NeverTrump during the election. I voted for the pot-smoking hippie because I refused to give up on the idea that a civil leader SHOULD be at least somewhat virtuous to govern our state. Yeah, Johnson was a bit loopy but at least he was honest. Clinton was so corrupt I never even considered her an option and Trump seemed to represent a degradation of the office. Besides, all the Smart People (TM) told me that there was no way he could win.
But he won. He f**king won and not only that, he is actually taking the fight to the Left. It was then that I had a fork in the road as a #NeverTrump voter - I could continue to freak out about him destroying the integrity of the office, or I could realize that he would never have been elected in the first place if the integrity of the office had not been destroyed long ago. I took the Red Pill and embraced the chaos. Let it all burn. Let the fire rage for the next 8 years. They own far more of the culture than we do but we are the ones who get married, have children, and form actual communities - ones that can rise from the ashes in cultural wastelands and do better next time. It's time to let those parasites die out and stop feeding off our taxes to prop up their failed fantasies. I don't hate my genteel Conservative friends who are still stuck in #NeverTrump freakout mode - I pity them. Because they are wasting their energies by hyperventilating about all this. Hopefully they'll get it out of their system soon and realize that Trump is like a force of nature, a wildfire that is fueled by outrage, smugness, and authoritarianism from his enemies. He may not be conservative himself, but conservatism and libertarianism both benefit from the chaos he provides and has room to establish more lasting roots. 603 So there was a Deadpool short that screened before "Logan", which is good in and of itself. But what's really awesome is the "credits" which is an Ace movie review style book review of "The Old Man & The Sea." Check it out, I swear Ace wrote it.

Let my FFL-03 expire last year (for non-gun nuts, that's a $30/3-year license that, depending on your state, lets you buy 50+-yr old guns directly from sellers, and have them delivered to you, without using a "normal" or FFL-01 gun dealer - thus no background check for a specific purchase).
CA, of course, gutted much of the value of an FFL-03 by requiring an additional, more expensive, state license be added to it. But if you're a serious collector or trader in older firearms, it would still be worth it. For me, I was at the end of my planned purchases in that category, except for maybe one or two more Garands, so it wasn't worth it. But many states are like CA was until 2 years ago. I have to say that having the Brown Truck of Happiness (UPS) pull up with a Garand or Mosin was like Christmas morning at 10 years old all over again. Even got my old UPS driver hooked on Mosins after he watched me open up a few. Posted by: rhomboid at March 06, 2017 03:50 PM (QDnY+) 668
"before the second Obama (Newtown) panic"
Speaking of Newtown, it featured prominently in the little noticed and less remarked Fourth Circus decision recently, the one which said that of course it's perfectly okay for states to ban ownership of "weapons of war" such as the AR rifle. It was the very same nonsense about how the Newtown school killer (whose name I will not utter) had been able to effect his lethal results because he was wielding an OMG BONA FIDE MILITARY KILLING MACHINE WHICH SPEWS BULLETS AT STUPENDOUS SPEEDS, as the federal court very calmly put it. The reality is that the Newtown killer was unopposed in any meaningful sense, and had plenty of time in which to ply his trade. The rate of fire of his weapon was and is contextually meaningless. He could practically have completed his slaughter if he had been using a single-shot muzzleloader. Posted by: torquewrench at March 06, 2017 03:50 PM (noWW6) 669

Watching the reaction of my liberal friends, I oscillate back and forth between feeling sorry for them -- as my nic indicates, I used to be one of their tribe, so I can see how it probably looks from their perspective -- and feeling giddy about watching their insufferable, passive-aggressive smugness get repeatedly sodomized by Trumpasarus Rex. This post is great -- and serves as a reminder that I should take to heart daily.
I work in an extremely left-wing environment. It sucks. According to my co-workers, everything in the world was dandy for 8 years (except, of course, for those crazed few who didn't support Obama or his ideas). Within a day, the tone of my co-workers shifted into constant meltdown mode. Everything is a problem! Everything is a crisis! We're being taken over by Russia! Then, there are my social media "friends," a term I'm using loosely at this point. I have one friend who has reinvented herself as a "victim." Never mind that she is happily married with an extremely well-paying job and living in a nice, crime-free neighborhood. She is a victim of the gender wage gap (if she's a victim, I wanna be one too). She is a victim of the patriarchy. Everything from her is Planned Parenthood, BLM, racism, victimhood. She is on Facebook multiple times every week just ranting non-stop. And just in case you don't get her point, she likes to write out the phrase "President Obama" and then just call the current president "Trump." The caterwauling is just exhausting at times. I don't remember being this crazy in 2008 and 2012, but I'm hopelessly biased. Maybe I was. Either way there's such a thing as overplaying your hand. It might not be illegal to investigate your opponent in a Presidential race, but it is certainly not good precedent to set. Because of where I work and many of the people I know, I figured I wouldn't get much sympathy by complaining about my unhappiness in 2008 or 2012. So I saved my venting for when I knew I was around those who felt the same way. It's funny, though. I wonder if the lefties I see melting down all the time have any sense of perspective. Ace is truly right on this. Cut off the toxic, crazy people from your life, your facebook and your twitter feed. In fact, delete your twitter feed. I made those small moves three weeks ago and already feel better. I also decided that I was not going to waste any of my precious energy on something that I can't change. I'm not going to get worked up every time something allegedly more "outrageous" happens. It was not easy at first but I think I have broken the addiction. Find a hobby or an activity that you can put that political energy into. I had decided that every time I felt the need to respond to something political, that I would pick up a book or resume an old hobby. I played the guitar as a child but had gotten away from that. So I bought a guitar from a local pawn shop and have been going thru instruction books to get my chord memory back. It's actually kind of fun. I may even buy a piano and teach myself that too. I had Spanish and Russian language courses when I was in college but let those skills lapse. So, when I'm not trying to play the guitar, I'm working on the hablo espanol or parra Ruska. It's meaningful and better for me right now than going into the kitchen and making elaborate fattening food or drinking gallons of Irish whiskey. Be advised that the latter two are still viable options! But seriously, stay the course and take Ace's advice. Find a hobby and stay off of their crazy train! With any luck, in 8 years when this crazy ends, I'll be a tri-lingual musician.

Great post Ace!
A bit of a reminder here: when someone has an incredibly warped worldview that is not reality based tries to convince you that his views are indeed real, that's called gaslighting. Gaslighting is another name for manipulation. From Wikipedia: Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the behavior or perception of others through abusive, deceptive, or underhanded tactics. By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at another's expense, such methods could be considered exploitative, abusive, devious, and deceptive. Ace, your SPOT ON. Anyone from Wisconsin has already see this thing play out, when Scott Walker survived his recall and Act 10 went into full gear. The Libs went crazy in WI, heck google Segway Boy if you want an example of the mentality. Its exactly what were seeing now, but on a national scale. Their world was upended and their big, but fragile egos (Great point there Ace!) can't handle it. It was a mess for Wisconsin and it will be a mess for the USA as a whole. On the plus side, Trump is a fighter and while he pokes the bear, he does get them so focused on him and what his last tweet was they don't attempt to mount any real effective opposition.

Beautiful essay, ace, and solid advice. Fortunately, *our* side hasn't hopped aboard The Mass Hysteria Express. There are infrequent attempts at rationalizing/reasoning, which is pointless with insanity.
Step aside and let the crazy train speed by. Absolute indifference in our daily lives, not indifference designed to get a reaction but indifference meant to go without notice, is exactly right. As you suggest, we need to keep apace of daily events so tanks rumbling in the streets don't surprise us. Your point about the National Divorce needs to be whispered, really low, from the rooftops. The Left seems to want the divorce and the most peaceful way is to let it think it is all its project, without giving away our autonomy. Modern Leftism has two prongs. The first is to feel better about oneself and the second is to control others, two things that should be contradictory but isn't with sociopaths/Leftists. Let them take the moral high ground, leave in a fashion that doesn't allow them to control us, and degenerate into their own internal Terror. The break-up is coming faster than any of us could have expected, and is the only reason to keep apprised of the news---after noon, just as you suggested. This post made me fall in love with Ace all over again.
Just don't let Ace start listening to Prof. Jordan B Peterson or we'll lose him down the rabbit hole of sweet, sweet psychological reason that is so satisfying it's been banned in Toronto. Posted by: JoanOfArgghh at March 06, 2017 04:43 PM (BC6+0) 699

Oh, this is good, Ace. What I felt intuitively after 9/11, you have expressed here in this post. I was a liberal all my life, from a family of liberals who are still liberals, until 9/11. they all think I'm the crazy one, but I could not remain a Democrat after 9/11, with the smug declarations about America getting what it deserved. The scales fell from my eyes. You are absolutely right about the Left treating President Trump as if he is a worst disaster than 9/11. Which says a lot about the Left, none of it good.

Thanks for the great post, Ace! It does seem like hysteria is everywhere. Again, I work in the entertainment industry in NYC, and everyone has gone COMPLETELY INSANE. They have indeed worked themselves into a mass hallucination that Trump and his voters are Nazis, and any obstruction or even violence is justified against Nazis. I'm certainly not watching as much news as I have been, and avoiding discussions with the craziest progs I know, but even that makes me feel like I'm walking on eggshells. And, as Ace has suggested in the past, I hate allowing lefties the privilege of unlimited violent expression of their opinions while insuring that I keep my head down and my mouth shut to avoid trouble. And yet, I want to keep working. It's tough.

Late to the party, but it seems to me the GOPe media is worse. Jonah, Kristol, even back benches like Sarah Rumps have spent more time ripping cops than the left.

Aside from a few minor points they are mostly hysterically and emotionally out of control. To them, Donald Trump is like your Ex who did everything wrong during the breakup.

Excellent advice Ace. I've had to pull myself away from the vortex lately. If only frustrated at the media Russia hysteria campaign. It helps to step away from social media for at least a week occasionally.

"Let not your mellow be harshed" is now my daily mantra, ace. I'm in quarantine until Wednesday, so I was happy to read this. The airwaves and TV are full of hysteria.

Great essay, even better advice.
The Beltway is becoming "Monsters Are Due on Maple Street (Part2)" (Twilight Zone). I already came to the same conclusion, intuitively. Tune them out, avoid the temptation of twiddling with their lights or re-arranging their furniture, and have a good life. Posted by: Levin at March 06, 2017 07:43 PM (4RsUF) 711

JuJu Be in post number 700: You said exactly what I feel. I could no longer be a Democrat after 9-11 because I could not bear to hear other Democrats says things like we deserved it, that the people in the towers were evil and had it coming, etc. I lost a life long friend that day, a good man who did nothing wrong other than go to work that day. Every time Ward Churchill spoke and every time the Democrats defended him made me want to punch some one. I have always called it my "Saul from Tarsus" moment. (Yeah, it's over-dramatic but it's my story so I'm allowed!) The scales fell from my eyes too. I've heard others call us "liberals who were mugged by reality". As I said, I could never be a Democrat after all that and the truth is, that Democratic Party does not exist anymore.

Naughty Pine in 709: I will either be a tri-lingual musician in 8 years OR a really large and overweight home chef with an addiction to Irish whiskey! I forgot to add that second part. The only place I check for comment is on this forum because the rest of the forums hurt my heart and my head. Anything else is a waste of energy and spirit. So I pick up my guitar or a Spanish dictionary. You have a keyboard calling...computer or piano? If it's a computer, go to that keyboard and hammer out that novel that's in the back of your mind. If it's the piano, hit the ivories! My chord memory has been good so far. I might able to strum some old Eagles tunes soon. And, I find that I'm also understanding a lot more of the steamy Mexican soap operas on Univision. We have zero control over the present Sturm und Drang but we have sure as shit have control over how to respond to it.

It occurred to me just before the new year to stop playing. It was so tempting to jab here or slap there, but it was ultimately a lost cause. Mine is a philosophy, theirs is a religion. You cannot "reason" someone to change their faith. So I walked away from the game. They provoke and stab and spit but my shields are up and I do not engage. They have become the apes at the zoo - fling poo if you want...I am out of range.

I am having trouble visualizing a universe where "the left" and "the nevertrumper/GOPe" are two sides.
