Loyce Edward Deen: 1921-1944

[This was sent to me by the secretary/treasurer of a local gun club]

Loyce Edward Deen, an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class, USNR, was a gunner on a TBM Avenger. On November 5, 1944, Deen's squadron participated in a raid on Manila, where his plane was hit multiple times by anti-aircraft fire while attacking a Japanese cruiser. Deen was killed.
The Avenger's pilot, Lt. Robert Cosgrove, managed to return to his carrier, the USS Essex. Both Deen and the plane had been shot up so badly that it was decided to leave him in the plane.
It is the only time in U.S. Navy history (and probably U.S. military history) that an aviator was buried in his aircraft after being killed in action.

Machinist's Mate Deen was killed almost 73 years ago. It makes me tremendously proud of our country that we remember.

No, last Wednesday we had a windstorm go through the SE Michigan area that produced sustained winds of 40mph for eight hours. Additionally we had 70mph gusts. Throughout those eight hours.

Have had a really wet spring and so trees went down everywhere and took out poles and wires.

SE and West Michigan had at one point, 1 million people without power.

Our neighbors had wires come down, arc and set woods and pastures on fire as the grasses are still winterdead. It' s why we don't have power yet and as rural residents, we are last on the list.

Supposed to be fixed by 11:30 pm tonight . Oh, did I mention we are getting 3-5 inches of snow right now??

We have been on a portable generator since Wed. At least we have heat, well, etc . I will be having a standby generator installed in the next month or so as this has truly sucked.

8 Avengers had a bad history of getting shredded and limping home. Quite a few of them made it back that had they been another plane probably wouldn't have survived... but that didn't equate to crew condition - crew were not well protected at all. I think during Midway one came back, sole survivor of its flight, with one dead man and two wounded, hundreds of holes.

14 What a coincidence. This weekend I was looking through an old book I have had since I was a kid: The War in The Air and saw a 4 photo montage of this. It's more of a photo book and this series lacked captions and simply said "An airman and his plane are buried at sea."

I surmised the likely general details but it's neat to hear the full story. Smart military blog indeed.

29 Getting dusty in here as I remember one of the operators on Pooky's plane telling me about the plane trying to kill them yet again. He thought, "Well, I'm not coming home tonight" as he put his oxygen on and started reading data to the front end as they tried to find a safe landing. There have been some very loud prayers on that plane more than once.

36 Sporkatus that was the other VT-8 that was at Midway.

Six new built Grumman TBF-1 Avengers of the second VT-8 flew from Hawai'i to Midway. Flying from the island they had been scrambled with all the other aircraft including F2A-1s, F4F-3s, SB2U-3s, and SBD-2s to go and attack the Japanese when Tomonoga's first wave was detected.

Lacking any fighter escort they pressed home the attack. Like their brethren flying the TBD-1 Devastators off USS Hornet. They were also saddled with the same faulty torpedo that could only be dropped within a very narrow window of conditions.

Of the six launched from Midway, only plane 8-T-1 returned safely. And it was riddled with bullets and a dead turret gunner.

So at the end of the first day of the Battle of Midway, out of 21 planes committed by both VT-8s only one was left and it was junk. As for crew, only two pilots - one bobbing in the water in the middle of the Japanese fleet - and a radio-gunner were the only ones to return.

Much of the destruction was from the battle itself. American forces tried to save as many old historic buildings as possible, but the Japs were holed up in almost every structure in that city. The American forces were left with no choice but to destroy them.

Then again, the Philippines were considered by many to be a complete waste of lives and material. Japan was already on it's ass and the only reason the invasion took place was to massage McArthur's ego.

Absolutely. Not "bad" in their own eyes because they have a "I got mine" attitude, I'm sure, and THAT'S the goal. It's not theft if they're allowed to do it, after all. Then they get their annual evaluations and are told they're doing okay, so they have it reinforced.

The worst part is realizing that they had figured out that the best way to get out of doing something was to f*ck it up so badly the first time that they wouldn't be asked to do it again. And they weren't. I'm guessing you see that too, right?

54 The British and Americans found the Brewster F2A-1 Buffalo fighters to be junk. But it was not only the plane's fault as both RAF and US pilots tried to dog-fight the A6M2. And like the Wildcat, the Buffalo was not, even in pre-war configuration missing armor and self-sealing tanks, nimble enough to do that. In contrast the Finns fought very effectively with their Buffalo fighters against the Russians.

Years and years of 'budget' concerns lead to the Bliss-Levitt torpedo that both the TBD and TBF used at Midway were saddled with. So one was never launched in peace time with a live warhead because they were too expensive. And by the time the Mk XIV aerial torpedo had been developed and deployed there was almost no Imperial Japanese Navy left to sink.

Josephistan. a good book on the Philippines campaign? Never read one that was focused purely on it. Sure there is Hoyt's book The Battle of Leyte Gulf. Or perhaps The Rescue by Steven Trent Smith. Or Buckley's At Close Quarters that devotes pages to the PTs part in the Philippines. Can't forget Gavan Daws' Prisoners of the Japanese. Even Fertig wrote a book about being a guerrilla fighter in the Philippines, but the title escapes me.

I had never heard this very moving story about Deen though.

Vaguely related, on Marine Traffic, I follow two USNS ships that are always docked in Corpus. These are two huge Ro-Ro ships that never go anywhere. A couple of weeks ago though, one went to Kuwait and is now in Bahrain, and the other one just left port and seems to headed in the same direction.

I don't know if this signifies something interesting about to happen, or if it's just routine moving stuff around.

I have a picture of him in military attire but don't know where the medal is. Josephistan. a good book on the Philippines campaign? Never read one that was focused purely on it. Sure there is Hoyt's book The Battle of Leyte Gulf. Or perhaps The Rescue by Steven Trent Smith. Or Buckley's At Close Quarters that devotes pages to the PTs part in the Philippines. Can't forget Gavan Daws' Prisoners of the Japanese. Even Fertig wrote a book about being a guerrilla fighter in the Philippines, but the title escapes me.

Torpedo Squadron 8, from the USS Enterprise. Still listed on Navy rolls to this day as "On Patrol". And yes, Ensign George Gay, from Houston, was the only survivor.

But by doing what they did when they did, Torpedo 8 drew the Japanese fighters down low, so that when the Navy dive bombers showed up a few minutes later, they had a clear shot and sank three of the four Japanese carriers in the space of a few minutes.

And there was a reason it was called the "Grumman Iron Works". Quite often, even when shot to hell, their planes (including the TBF Avenger) would still make it back to the ship.

.They did a multi million $$$ restoration after that fire and were able to recover quit a bit of stuff they thought was lost, but yes most of the Army records from WWI and WWII were lost.

There are also other places to get copies of DD214's. Town/City halls are a place to start if the State or locality has a Veterans Tax exemption. I wouldn't waste my time with the VA and they most always claim their files are all HIPPA protected.

A lot of that depended upon the operations circumstances. The first year of the pacific war saw the allies on the defensive and with limited to no radar. They were often responding to Japanese raids with little warning so the P-39s and P-40s typically were at lower altitude and climbing when engaged (losing their moderate energy advantage) and usually with inferior numbers. If flown right with a starting altitude advantage (or at least parity) the P-40, P-39 and Wildcat were entirely competitive with the Zero. They could hold their own with the early 109s at low altitude in Africa and the Med, but not in Europe which was a high altitude supercharged/turbocharged war until the end.

The huge kill scores by the Germans on the Eastern front were as much (IMO far more so) rules of engagement that allowed for hit and run tactics when the fight was in their favor and numerous engagement opportunities and limited soviet flexibility in tactics. On the other hand, many allied fighter pilots late in the war had trouble encountering a German plane to shoot down.

Iris Chang's book The Rape of Nanking has been argued as possibly too extreme with the numbers. The credentials of those arguing is too be questioned as possible revisionist apologists for the Japanese, so who really knows. Some say only 10,000 dead others up to 200,000. Personally as I have read and re-read her book I think 100,000 is about right (according to other sources , mostly German) maybe a bit high. Whatever the true figure is there is no denying that the Japanese were utter arseholes.
