Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Probes of Deep Sea Floor Reveals "Strong" Sources of Methane, a Powerful Greenhouse GasTo understand why this is important, you need to know what the "Science Media" refuses to tell you: While carbon dioxide is classified as a greenhouse gas, it is barely classified as one: It is one of the very weakest to have such a designation. By the way, carbon dioxide is an even weaker greenhouse agent than understood even by climate skeptics: It begins as a weak greenhouse gas, and then becomes even more weak at higher concentrations. That is, units of carbon dioxide do not "stack" upon themselves as simple as 1 + 1 = 2. It's more like 1 + 1 = 1.4. And the 1 + 1 + 1 = 1.65. As carbon dioxide concentration increases, the addition of any more carbon dioxide contributes less to the greenhouse effect than the last. The "marginal" impact of every new dose of carbon dioxide is always less than the last dose administered. Methane, on the other hand, is a powerful greenhouse gas. How much more powerful is methane than carbon dioxide in terms of greenhouse impact? Try thirty times more powerful, Jack. The Warming Mongers have occasionally sort of owned up to this Inconvenient Truth. When they talk about cattle farming as being a Danger to Our Very Earth, they're talking about the methane produced by cows' digestion of grass and feed. Their farts, I mean. More cows, more methane, more greenhouse effect. But of course their central preoccupation is carbon dioxide, which I have a habit of mocking as The Invisible Killer. In fact, it's not so much a killer as a minor bother. Now scientists have probed the tropical Pacific floor, and have found a great big swath of microbes pumping out a gas that actually has a greenhouse impact beyond the trivial.Writing in the journal for the International Society for Microbial Ecology, (Friday 24 February 2017) the team describe for the first time how microbial methane production in parts of the seafloor, where the water is very low in oxygen, feeds a vast methane pool which extends from Panama, up to Mexico and as far out as the Hawaiian archipelago. Joint lead author Felicity Shelley, from QMUL's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, said: "The research is novel because it's the first time anyone has successfully retrieved sediment from this part of the ocean and directly measured methane production using specialised equipment on board the research ship." "It is important that we understand how microbes produce and consume this powerful greenhouse gas, especially in the oceans where we currently understand very little."Hack Scientists Who Didn't Really Major in a Real Science: "The science is settled." Actual Science: "Yes, lads, you've fathomed all of my mysteries in the thirty years since you've created and then 'pefected' this infant grab-bag science of yours. You've got me all figured out, and there's nothing left to learn. Well done, boys. Very well done. By the way, I'm being very sarcastic. Like Spock with an arched eyebrow. That's how Science rolls." Actually, this might mean a source for frozen clathrate deposits - "methane ice" on the sea floor, which exists in significant quantities. if the bacteria produce methane in vast amounts right at the sea floor, it suggests a formation mechanism for the clathrates that we see in huge areas of the ocean floor.
But that would be impossible, because areas with frozen clathrates on the sea floor have never been warmer, right? Posted by: Sporkatus at March 02, 2017 03:06 PM (eXSOZ) 30

Here is why ALL the models show warming. Because they all assume an increase in CO2 makes for an increase in temperature. That's not based on anything other than the assumption. Because Venus has CO2, and it's hot. I guess Venus is a planet so that sounds like science, but that is pretty much it.
CO2 has increased, there is no question about that. But whether that makes for a temperature change is good question. Posted by: blaster at March 02, 2017 03:09 PM (tewYv) 51

CO2 is no bother, it is plant "fertilizer". going from 290 to 400ppm is significant for plant growth, not significant as a "greenhouse gas".
"The real Greening of America", and all arid areas around the world, is almost certainly due to CO2 increases. Going to 600ppm would do more to feed the world than most other efforts. Methane's effect is also trivial, because it is momentary, or nearly so. Methane is volatile, and breaks down in the atmosphere very readily, very quickly. It is an effective greenhouse gas only in isolation from the atmosphere.

Equally to the point, if you're depending on instrumented measurement that's got a margin of error over history of +/-, say, half a degree, and you've only got actual measurements of 35% of the globe, but you're claiming to cook up results planet-wide accurate to 0.02deg, you're full of shit. I'm sure you've all heard of all the experiments that tell exactly what Earth's average temperature would be today if we had never used carbon-based fuels. No? Neither has anyone else. Because real science has measurements and numbers--not "computer models." But, that's the real damned question here, isn't it? "What is the 'optimal' temperature for the Earth?" "When was the Earth at this optimal temperature?" "Why is that the optimal temperature?" The man-made global warming people WILL NOT answer those three questions. Actually, this might mean a source for frozen clathrate deposits - "methane ice" on the sea floor, which exists in significant quantities. if the bacteria produce methane in vast amounts right at the sea floor, it suggests a formation mechanism for the clathrates that we see in huge areas of the ocean floor. But that would be impossible, because areas with frozen clathrates on the sea floor have never been warmer, right? consider a big hunk of methane hydrate on the ocean floor start to "melt" with a ship passing on the surface above. instant sinking. Actually.... CO2 will no longer do anything to global warming at all.
If you look at what wavelengths it absorbs, it shares many bands with Water vapor... And ALL of that energy is already being absorbed by the combination of CO2 and Water Vapor... ALL OF IT... For CO2 to have a further effect, you would need to add energy at those wavelengths... which can only be done by an actual Warming of the Earth itself (Blackbody radiation).
This is true in general. People usually measure absorbance, not transmittance, because absorbance is proportional to concentration, while transmittance (the percentage of light at a particular wavelength that gets through) has a logarithmic relationship. This is known as Beer's Law: http://teaching.shu.ac.uk/hwb/chemistry/tutorials/molspec/beers1.htm Further, let us compare some infrared spectra. CO2 absorbs quite well, but over a narrower wavelength. Water absorbs more weekly, but over a much broader range. Here is an infrared spectrum of CO2: http://preview.tinyurl.com/gmbn7x8 Here is an infrared spectrum of H2O: http://preview.tinyurl.com/zzywhwy To compare, here is a background spectrum with atmospheric CO2 and H2O: http://preview.tinyurl.com/z32glgb Pro-tip: There is ten times as much H2O in the atmosphere than CO2, and H2O concentration is far more variable than CO2 ever could be. Now, here is an infrared spectrum of methane: http://preview.tinyurl.com/hswlxqr IOW, "settled science" is not actual settled science. In light of this new scientific finding, it's obvious that there is only one thing to do: drain the oceans.
Alternatively, we can attempt to reason past Step 1. So, you're saying at the oceans pump out greenhouse gas... which allegedly causes the earth to increase in temperature... which causes the oceans to evaporate... which, over time, might reduce the level of ocean greenhouse gases... which, over time, may cause the earth to cool. Why, it's almost like there might a very long cycle of heating and cooling that has nothing whatsoever to do with the human activities and corresponds to long term climate change data that hasn't been altered into fake hockey sticks. Nah. Couldn't be. We'd better ban some more asthma medication or CA, NY, and DC might be underwater in 10 years. ... wait... CA, NY, and DC underwater and destroyed? By giant, unpredictable tsunamis flooding that will wipe out everyone there without warning?... Hmmm. I'm going to go burn some tires. Posted by: Damiano at March 02, 2017 04:04 PM (71OEY) 414

the role of CO2 in life on this planet is critical. without it, all we carbon based lifeforms would have NO CARBON. anyone who calls CO2 as pollutant is not a scientist. the only lifeform that can ignore CO2 is silicon based life, and we have yet to see any of that to my knowledge.
Burning methane converts its nasty-ness greenhouse gas into CO2 and H2O. 2 lessor greenhouse gasses. plus it gives some heat and light to keep out the iceage. Posted by: talgus da Deplorable at March 02, 2017 04:54 PM (fJQAI) 423
Gaia farts

It's true that methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas, but it's also true that its absorption spectrum overlaps that of water vapor by quite a bit, so most of the radiation it would be trapping has already been absorbed by the water vapor. This is a fact that the panic peddlers like to ignore when they're raising the alarm about cow farts. In fact, the alarmists like to look at each greenhouse gas in isolation ("see how much hotter this fishtank full of C02 is than this tank of air?").
That way they can ignore the fact that the atmosphere is much more complicated than their simple-minded scare stories would suggest. Posted by: mikesixes at March 02, 2017 05:12 PM (dMTFL) 425
"What is the 'optimal' temperature for the Earth?"
"When was the Earth at this optimal temperature?" "Why is that the optimal temperature?" The man-made global warming people WILL NOT answer those three questions. Posted by: RoyalOil at March 02, 2017 03:24 PM (AmMfi) Bush 43's NASA Administrator, Mike Griffin, posed it a little differently, but the same point:1. First, let's decide what the optimal temperature of the Earth's atmosphere is, then2. Let's figure out the most cost-effective way of getting there.3. I'm pretty sure it's not by controlling the economies of all the nations of the world to regulate CO2. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at March 02, 2017 07:57 PM (jK8Z7) 426
A CEO of a company you have heard of once said to me, "I know there are whole planets with methane atmospheres out there and I don't think they had any dinosaurs, so I think methane probably comes from somewhere else."

Can't find the post above about significant digits. I agree generally with your point, but there shouldn't be a problem with 0.5 degree observations if we use a large number of them and they are unbiased. OTOH, if you're using a rule like "round all the .5's up to the next degree," then you've introduced a bias.

The bigger point is that all of the models are no better than random variation, even though they are "tuned" to produce warming with increased anthropogenic CO2. They cannot account for other periods of warming and cooling, so the null hypothesis, which is that the current warming trend is due to the same kind of random variation as has occurred in the past, cannot be disproven. The models are not, ahem, science.

Dear Mr. Ace, the Great White Scotsman makes an interesting point; HOWEVER, given that we have passed Al Gore's tipper point, AND, that Mother Gaia has sequestered SIX THOUSAND times as much CO2 in her cellulite, (AKA limestone,) deposits -- it is not possible that said Gaia's CO2 induced hot flash ever ended. THEREFORE we do not exist. QED

To bad I'm so late to this party.
You all MISSED the crucial detail that NONE of the climate models suggested that CO2 is a big enough deal to do much of anything on it's own, so they MANUFACTURED a "feedback mechanism" of sorts, where the CO2 warmed the Earth a little, which caused more WATER VAPOR to be released, which is a STRONG greenhouse gas. In reality, that feedback mechanism not only doesn't exist, and has been disproven, but it COULDN'T have existed, because it's unstable - so if it really existed the least little exhale of CO2 would have set the whole thing off millenia ago. If anything, more water vapor makes for more clouds, which reflects away more of the Sun's radiation, which has a cooling effect. As one would expect, the Earth's thermodynamic equilibrium is extremely STABLE. These people are a disgrace to the name of science. Posted by: Optimizer at March 03, 2017 12:31 AM (EnK/R) 431

A few years ago, there was an article in The Economist, where they actually drew a confidence interval, and were fretting that the data was about to exit it. There are a number of things to observe: (1) The whole point of a confidence interval is that if you exit the interval, you're supposed to REJECT the hypothesis. In this case, GW is essentially the hypothesis. Of course, they said nothing about how we were on the cusp of GW being REFUTED, even though that's exactly where what they presented led. (2) Instead, they spoke of simply making the confidence interval WIDER, going to a "95% confidence level" instead of 90%. At the same time, declaring that this meant they were MORE confident, when it really means the exact opposite. In layman's terms, this is called "moving the goalpost" - not exactly "science". (3) As you point out, it wasn't even the right NULL hypothesis - they had GW as their H0, which is giving GW a HUGE advantage (and yet it was StILL on the verge of being refuted).
