The Art Museum of Philadelphia, goes without saying. Also on the Parkway is the Barnes Foundation, home to an incredible collection of post-Impressionist artwork. Often overlooked in Philadelphia is the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, which showcases American artists who are alumni of that institute. It's worth a tour just for the building.

Observation the Oneth: The artist looks tiny. If Rembrandt had been more successful in his lifetime maybe he could have hired a whole person instead of a midget to pose for him.
Observation the Tooth: The artist has stepped back from the easel to see how his work looks from a viewing perspective. As the studio is set up, we're probably seeing him from the model's point of view. This means that most of us (not all, many 'Ettes have surely experienced this) are for the first time in the position of being a pretty naked girl. Posted by: Mike at February 28, 2017 09:38 AM (GJHwM) I'm on the side that supported the move. Barnes set up his collection to be a public teaching service so regular people could learn about & appreciate art, but Lower Merion Township made it very difficult for people to visit the collection. They had a wonderful treasure there but didn't want anyone else to come see it. So while moving the collection to Philadelphia may have violated the letter of Barnes's will, it was in the spirit of what he envisioned for his collection. The documentary definitely has a viewpoint slanted toward keeping the museum in the way specified in his will (and he was foolish in how he left it). However, even if you don't agree with that, the assortment of greedy state government, non-profit organizations, and local journalists who worked together to get their hands on Barnes' collection is disgusting. That's the thing - it was a private collection, private property. The public doesn't have a right to access a collection just because it is a good one. You MUST visit the Barnes. Regardless of what you think about the circumstances of the move, the new building is perfect for the collection. There's an auditorium so you can learn about the history of the collection before you enter, and by inserting small rooms between each of the galleries, Williams and Tsien give you a chance to pause and reset. Otherwise the sheer quantity of masterpieces is overwhelming. Give yourself plenty of time; the museum is small, but the collection is huge.

I think you're thinking of the Mercer Museum.
In Doylestown! There are three Mercer buildings there, the museum, his residence at Font Hill, and the Moravian Tile Works (which is oddly missing from the Mercer Museum website). Mercer was a kook who thought that concrete was the building material of the future, but he pre-dated brutalism so he made fanciful almost Gothic palaces from poured concrete. Font Hill is now also a museum. When I was ten we lived in an apartment for a couple of months waiting for the house to be finished. Font Hill was in the scary woods behind us. It wasn't open to the public, but the peevish old caretaker woman would show you around for a quarter. I didn't have a quarter the day my friends went so I only got as far as being scared by the old lady at the door. Posted by: Bandersnatch, gentleman cad at February 28, 2017 10:35 AM (gIRsn) 281

This always kills me. Lots of things are "just social constructs". The fact that people have to drive on one side of the road is a "social construct". Representative democracy is a "social construct". Household voltage and amperage are "social constructs". The Bache's were close friends of Benjamin Franklin's and he stayed there for several months while his own place was being renovated. They told me my room was the one where Ben Franklin slept, although I get the feeling they tell that to all the guests, as there's really no way of knowing. Tiny room with a sloped ceiling above your bed so if you sit up suddenly you conk your noggin. Like I said, I heard advertising that mentioned Crowder, Levin, and Malkin - but not Steyn - weeks ago. I figured he was cooked then. But as of 2/24 (which was Friday) he had a column posted saying to watch his show in crtv. CRTV Customer Support say: Due to a technical issue, there was a delay in the post of the episodes. We are trying our hardest to get them posted before the end of the week. We certainly hope they will honor that commitment to their customers, but the issue is outside our control. Please contact CRTV Customer Support here. Sir: Gender, as all educated people know, refers to the declension of nouns in the study of language.
The sex of a human is limited to male and female. Exactly. They even had to start using a word that doesn't apply so they can be even more delusional. Posted by: dagny at February 28, 2017 10:55 AM (Mc+44) 352
And if you do want to get a cheesesteak, Geno's & Pat's are fine for tourists who don't know any better, but a real good steak sandwich can be had at Tony Luke's or Jim's. Or if you want to take a trip, go to D'alessandro's in Roxborough. People from all over the city go there for a cheesesteak. Best around IMHO.

Now Race, THAT'S a social construct! Posted by: Tom Servo at February 28, 2017 11:00 AM (V2Yro) If Gender is a social construct, and this enables you to be whatever the hell you want and objective reality has to realign itself to your whims, and everyone has to praise your bravery, and whatnot... Then I say, quite obviously, that Class and Privilege are also social constructs, thus do I under the same rules declare that I identify as the Emperor of the Universe. Having the power of decree befitting my station, I declare that gender exists only as a linguistic device, having as its purpose to describe things based on apparent biological sex or lack thereof. Thus there are only 3 genders, male, female, and neuter; he, she, and it. Furthermore, that anyone attempting to invent new genders and insist that you use their pronouns ought to be laughed at and mocked for not being able to figure out what squishy bits they have. CRTV brings together top thought-provoking personalities Mark Levin, Michelle Malkin and Mark Steyn who will share their knowledge, insightful and powerful ideas, stories and entertainment that cannot be found anywhere on television. "We have partnered with the best thinkers and storytellers out there and given each the resources to design their own show in their own voice on their own custom set reflective of each of their personalities" according to Chris Crane, Chief Content Officer. "When CRTV officially launches in December 2016, subscribers will be able to access new and original shows in development from Michelle Malkin and Mark Steyn, joining Mark Levin's highly successful Levin TV". Hey, Hollywood geniuses;
While you were applauding for the unlimited entry of Iranians into America (and for your own moral superiority) did it ever occur to you that the statement purportedly written by the Iranian film-maker might have been written by his government? Do you seriously believe he is free to express any political belief just like you can in America? With his family hostage in Iran? Maybe that's why they kept him away. Or maybe he does believe what was read for him--I'm sure the Revolutionary government only allows "safe" films and film-makers. We don't know if those were his words or not. We can't know. And that's the problem. Yet you "artists" applauded anyway. The Washington Post Democracy Dies in State-Approved Art Posted by: The Gipper Lives at February 28, 2017 11:12 AM (m6qV1) 425

I visited Philadelphia once...ONCE!
After I checked into my hotel, somewhere down town, I decided to go for a walk, stretch my legs after the flight. About three in the afternoon. The street in front of the hotel looked pretty nice, shops, restaurants no problems. Only, I noticed all the entries had the metal barriers that roll up during the day and down when you lock up. Not so good. Got to the end of the block and turned right. Neighborhood went from okay to a little scary at the corner. Walked one more block and turned right again. Immediately stopped, turned around and headed back to the hotel. Evidently the "Tracks" ran right through the hotel, or something. Posted by: JB1000 at February 28, 2017 11:23 AM (16OL0) 463

Hell, even Klinefelter doesn't happen that often. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 28, 2017 11:19 AM (rF0hx) It isn't meaningful if the question is "What is the usual expectation of the phenotype of XY". It is meaningful if the question is "What is the essential nature of gender." If the latter question is important, and it seems to be, then gender cannot be reduced to karyotype: there have always been people wandering around with androgen insensitivity syndrome who everybody agrees are girls. They look like girs, they act like girls, they think they are girls, and people treat them as girls, and they happen to be infertile (like a lot of girls). But so what? This does not imply that it is beneficial to ANYONE to regard gender (in general) as either arbitrary or fluid. Posted by: Alcoholic Asshole Shut In at February 28, 2017 11:26 AM (CPk08) 474

RE: 19: "Barnes Foundation, home to an incredible collection of post-Impressionist artwork."
It's mainly Impressionist artwork and a few post-impressionists. You will see more Renoirs here than anywhere else in the world. The French leave with erections that last days after seeing this collection. Barnes bought the impressionists for a song when no one else was collecting them and created a collection that he chose not to display chronologically or by artist but with other works to make a point about technique or some other trait. He left strict rules on how the works were to be displayed in his will and when the collection was moved from his villa to the museum it was literally built around the collection. These painting were not photographed or seen anywhere outside his villa until the 90s when the museum had financial difficulties and they contravened the will to send it to Paris and Munich. The administrators (who were also stipulated in the will and ran it financially into the ground) had to go to court to get legal permission to move it to it's current location so they could increase the number of visitors. It used to sit out in Merion County in a suburb and visitors were strictly limited by the amount of cars the busses the wealthy neighbors were willing to tolerate. One thing the collection will make obvious is that Picasso was chasing Matisse. Posted by: DL at February 28, 2017 11:27 AM (bskJ5) 479

The concept of CRTV, or the Newsmax channel, or Beck's thing ... is good. Alternative media that can reach out, especially if it gets on cable and satellite rather cheaply. But they still need funding and if one guy is too "radical" or hard nosed, it makes a tough environment.
Dana has been on Fox a few times, seems somewhat tempered on Trump. Buck Sexton was still good. But there are many choices for free, so paying for a channel will be a tough sell. Late to the thread. This is unlike any Rembrandt I've seen. The textures, especially for the floor and plaster walls, is on the verge of Impressionism. The brush strokes of the floor in particular remind me of Van Gogh more than anything else. Given the small size, I wonder if it was an earlier effort when he was experimenting with styles and techniques.
But the eyes remind me of his other self-portraits and the color palette is how I picture his simpler paintings. Can't decide if I like this or not. I am intrigued by comparing it to the Rembrandt paintings I'm more familiar with. Posted by: JTB at February 28, 2017 11:51 AM (V+03K) 575

There's a great Rembrandt self-portrait in the Frick Museum in NYC. Used to be a private home.

MOAA? What does that mean?

You can't go wrong with either the phila museum of art or the Barnes foundation. Around independence mall, there are many smaller museums from a history vs art perspective.
For something completely different, check out The Stoogeum in Ambler, outside of Philly. Posted by: Stefano at February 28, 2017 12:09 PM (hp+aF) 583
KAC probably thought it would be rude, and a little too informal under the circumstances, to take off her shoes in a room full of guests about to take a photo-op with the President. It's not rude to wear your shoes (literally) on the couch, unless they're dirty enough to smudge the fabric. Unless she walked through a sea of mud to reach the Oval Office (insert your own election 2016 joke here) her shoes were clean.

The Rosenbach Museum is an easy walk from center city if your near the Convention Center or business towers, and it's really a treasure. 2008 Delancey Place. Its a museum of rare books and manuscripts and other stuff collected by the Rosenbach brothers who were collectors and brokers. Conrad's manuscript for Lord Jim, William Blake drawings and Lewis Carroll stuff for example. It's now run by the Free Library of Philadelphia which also has a small rare book room that's open to the public.
You might also like to take a walk through the Reading Terminal Market very near the Marriott. A walk through the Italian Market on S 9th Street might be good, although it should probably be called the Vietnamese and Mexican Market. Washington to Christian. Very close to Pat's and Geno's if your eating steak sandwiches. Some think the market is dirty. I think its great. Have fun. Posted by: JohnOh at February 28, 2017 12:10 PM (0yvPc) 585

The painting might be tiny, but the painting in the painting is very big.

The Rodin museum is also on museum drive and can be viewed in an hour or two. It has one of original sculptures of "The Kiss". The only other Rodin museum is in Paris.
