The Dance Lesson
Edgar Degas

Where does one draw the line between modern art and the masters, who had great technique and skills far beyond what most artists of the last 125 years could ever dream of? That is not to say that the imagination and the vision of more modern artists couldn't be fantastic, but it's the combination of all of those things that made them masters!

What? No...I have no idea. That was a rhetorical question. But I'll bet it's somewhere around when this guy painted.

We went to our 8 yo nieces dance class recital in PA where I guess dance is a blood sport. 2 hours long. We did get an intermission though. After the first half hour it looked all the same to me.

84 Degas dancers are always problematic for me. For some reason, his bodies don't show the line that all dancers strive for. There was a sculpture a while ago with a kid with hands behind her back, and this one with the extended leg not looking in perspective. Tired violinist, irritated dancer -- very well done. Color and perspective is just wrong to me.

96 I'm never sure what to think of Degas. The scenes are not especially profound and in fact remind me of snap shots with a camera. But he does capture the poses and movements of a moment, where the viewer, or at least this viewer, imagines the next moments to come. From a technical perspective I generally prefer his earlier paintings but am still interested in the pastels and simpler, looser look of the later works. (I wonder if his later paintings influenced the 'looser' look of Picasso and others from that period.)

This is a long-winded way to say Degas' works are interesting and qualify as 'art' without making me want to kick a hole in the wall going "Wow".

There was a sculpture a while ago with a kid with hands behind her back, and this one with the extended leg not looking in perspective. Tired violinist, irritated dancer -- very well done. Color and perspective is just wrong to me.

"Little Dancer, Aged 14" The only sculpture made in his lifetime. It was originally made in wax. He seems to have been trying to capture the grace of dancer and the youth of the girl. Impressionism is about mood and capturing the fleeting moment, not about the actual subject. This is why Monet is so "blurry".

I went with my wife for a single day right after I got married. We were living in Alabama at the time, so it was just a decent drive there.

It was off season, and the French Quarter was still impossible to find parking in. If Uber had been a thing at the time, that would have been how we would have gotten there from our bed and breakfast.

It was fun, though. We picked a random restaurant to eat dinner in, and apparently Andrew Jackson had used the same building to plan some of the Battle of New Orleans in. It was neat.

I have very little desire to go back though. Feels like a checkmark on a list. Like how I'll probably never go back to India. Done it. No need to do it again.

It caught them flat-footed, and many of them have not made peace with the fact that the landscape has permanently changed. The obstructionists who want to wish this new world away must be spotted, tagged and removed. It is up to us to make sure that the farm team is fielding players who are not afraid to get their jerseys dirty.

There were French military stationed on the street corners in the mid-'80s. We went to visit family during a terrorism spell that put a big damper on travel to Europe. We had already scheduled our stay with Nonna, and really didn't GAS about the terror troubles.

There were so many empty seats on the plane we all got to stretch out and catch some z's. It was around the time of the Achille Lauro.

College should not be 4-5 years of intense psychological labs teaching conditioning young people to be drones and worker bees. This is sad. In a way I feel sorry for the MSM because they are a living case study to the education system today works on conditioning and brainwashing instead of drawing out innate talents.

When out of their environments it makes it impossible for these people to function.

The education system since Dewey also has considered intelligent students to be anti-social and their goal is to have less if them. Just sad how long this has been going on.

Probably not Degas. His subjects were strictly entertainment. Manet would, and probably Pissaro. Pissarro would have given them a negative view though. While the other Impressionists were were more-or-less moderates (in the modern sense), Pissarro was definitely a Socialist.

I'm not a big fan of people. But I still watch 'em. Like a hawk.

I see your point and generally agree. I was fortunate though in that I was an older student, and had already confidence in my beliefs. I just wanted my degree as fast as I could so I could move on with my life. I also really liked my professors and didn't want to ruin that. (I was gonna need them after) When I started teaching art, I only included politics when it was actually relevant to the work, NOT with some modern re-interpretation of artists' actual intentions. I think I get people, but I just don't like dealing with them. I'm kind of an extreme introvert, so I've spent a lot of my life just simply observing other people.

I think my background in statistics also helps. Standing back and trying to draw out general trends from a data set (in this instance, observational data over the course of a handful of decades), I've come to my conclusions about how most people would rather stay at home and watch TV than get a job. Threat of starvation is a great motivator.

Yes. Worried about Parvo too. But we did get him from a very good breeder and he is the third one we've gotten from her. Kennels are immaculate. Also, we just got him on Sunday, and he hasn't been out of our backyard and house. He was doing great until last night. So I'm praying it's not Parvo, but you never know what other critters could have wandered into our yard.

Bringing samples with us to vet, so we should know in about an hour. Will keep you all posted.

My cousins emigrated to Australia from Italy, lived there for about 15 years. They took their Aussie dollars back to Italy to settle there longterm. They have regretted that decision ever since.

Seeing a flicker in our backyard was what started Mrs. JTB and I in bird watching many years ago. We were intrigued by the odd look of the flicker. We still see them, maybe twice a year, and as you said only one at a time. We have learned to attract some of the smaller woodpeckers to the yard and they are always fun to watch.

While stationed in Italy, I worked with (and was befriended by) a local couple. He was the son of expats and was raised in the RSA. He had a British accent. Her parents were ex-pats in Australia. I wondered if they spoke Italian with an accent.

I had a German prof who was part of the occupation force in Germany post-WWII. He started learning German from a local girl. It was several years before he learned the girl had a slight lisp, which he strove to replicate.

265 I won a free plane ticket at a YMCA contest. I decided to go to NOLA. In August. I almost didn't go because I lost my job right before the planned trip. It was hot and humid. I rode the streetcars a lot and walked a lot. I took a trip to some plantations. I really enjoyed it. This was pre Katrina, so I don't know how the areas I went to were affected. I'd still recommend the trip.

I have an employee who was supposed to come in late today--his babysitter had a morning dentist appointment.

He comes in on time. The babysitter won't leave her house because ICE is at the end of her street (this is Buda, TX, town immediately south of Austin). My employee's wife checked their local school attendance yesterday--only 55% of students show up. My employee (who is racially Hispanic but comes from way back Texas generations and speaks less Spanish than I do, which is not much) says the gates are chained on all the houses on his street. People won't even come out.

ATC, I agree. I prefer enough realism so I don't have to guess at anything but that still leaves plenty of space for the art. Rembrandt, the other Dutch Masters, and Veronese come to mind. Same with Norman Rockwell and Wyeth. Except as a demonstration of technical ability, photo realism in painting/drawing is impressive but often cold.

The article was bemoaning the fact that career foreign service officer Kristien Kenney was being asked to leave. No, her resignation was accepted. She has been there under Clinton, Bush II and Obama. That's a good long career. She has her twenty, and can retire. And the SecState can choose his staff. Every other freaking SecState has done it. But suddenly, the press has decided to actually look at what happens in a transition of administration, and scream "it's not fair!!" because the candidate they didn't support gets to do what the candidates they did support (for the most part) have done.

It isn't stupid, it is what they have to run with. For all of Trump being Hitler, the concentration camps are a long time coming. In fact the more you scream that Trump is Hitler without Trump doing anything Hitlerian - or even rising to the level of Francisco Franco - the more ridiculous you and your side seem.

The thing they run with now is 'chaos in the administration' and talking up personnel changes is part of their proof of the chaos and the turmoil and the tumult and the higgidy-piggidy mess of Trump. Since Trump was sent to drain the swamp, those that sent him expect some chaos as the alligators bite back and are eliminated. The chaos argument will fade in a few weeks and be replaced by another one.

The article was bemoaning the fact that career foreign service officer Kristien Kenney was being asked to leave. No, her resignation was accepted. She has been there under Clinton, Bush II and Obama. That's a good long career. She has her twenty, and can retire. And the SecState can choose his staff. Every other freaking SecState has done it. But suddenly, the press has decided to actually look at what happens in a transition of administration, and scream "it's not fair!!" because the candidate they didn't support gets to do what the candidates they did support (for the most part) have done.

I just don't understand how someone can be so freaking stupid.

Pretty much. Semi-autobiographical novel written by a Marine vet, adapted to film by Kubrick. Excellent performances all around by people like Ermey, Vincent D'Onofrio, Adam Baldwin, etc. Kubrick probably intended for it to be an anti-war film, but if you've ever been in the military, you mostly notice that he got the absurdity and surreality of things pretty much spot-on.

380 Oleanders - I grew up in Phoenix where they were used as hedges a lot, they don't need much water and they don't mind 100 degree temperatures.

If you're a kid messing around in that hedge and a leaf pokes you in the eye, it stings like hell.

and I remember a campfire where some stupid kid threw a bunch of dead oleander sticks and leaves on the fire, he thought it would be funny. That shit was worse then tear gas!

She married a man from Quebec and they lived and raised their kids there. She was fluent in the local French patois. Imagine how much painting and scraping goes on with Navy ships to combat rust. Nothing unusual at all. I bet I could make it seem unusual by breathlessly touting how many man-hours and how much paint is used per month on a destroyer and make it seem as if every ship is defectively made.

Does this work? Somewhat. It hits at first and then drops off when nothing unusual happens and it gets discounted. People won't remember specifics, but they will gain a gut feeling that the hype is just that and discount it.
