Savarin
Jasper Johns

This is at The Whitney Museum of American Art, which is in Manhattan, in the far West Village (J.J. Sefton might dispute this. Maybe it's South Chelsea?). It's a famous museum, and we are all supposed to love the art in it. But I can't. It has far too much stuff that isn't art, at least for me.

It's an issue that will never be settled -- what is art -- but I know what it is for me. For instance; I love great photography. Hell I have an Ansel Adams print in my house. But I breeze through most photography exhibits in museums, because part of the pleasure of art is the contemplative. And most photographs just don't evoke that.

I've told this joke before: an artist's model shows up at his studio one morning.

"I've got an awful headache and don't feel like painting," the artist said, "but why don't you sit with me and have a cup of coffee before you go?"

The model brews a pot and the two are just about to sit down when someone pounds on the studio door.

"Oh, my God, it's my wife!" the artist yells to the model. "Quick, take your clothes off!"

If only we had some sort of process for that. You know, like the person at the top had to go through some sort of "elective" campaign where they try to convince the country that they should be trusted. Too bad that we didn't have one of those with Trump. That way a far more qualified candidate might have been able to beat him to the position.

One might think, well, Schindler is ex IC, so maybe he is just talking out of his butt. But I would think that the IC would be out front and center saying everything that guy just said is bullshit, we take the security of this country very seriously and we would never shirk our duty for any reason.

But, no, they aren't. Instead, they let that sit out there, and someone, either explicitly in the IC or not, is abetting that talk. Because they want to seem more important than they really are, or they are assholes, or any number of other reasons.

The impression I have now is that their little butthurt feelings are more important than my life. Yeah, well snowflake, I don't pay you to be in a snit and snivel.

I honestly think they overplayed their hand this time because transcripts of the conversations are going to come out and I think they will prove that absolutely nothing happened. If the left had any proof they would have used it already in their attempt to destroy Trump.

Clearly if they believed it they would be in ACTUAL fear and would keep their heads down, stay out of the streets and stay off the internet hangouts, shy away from their coffee houses and generally try to be invisible.

Since the opposite is happening, I should be able to tell them that they are all a bunch of whining, playacting, sniveling losers. Especially since they cannot come up with a singe instance where they have been physically harmed.

180 Agree. In the "modern" age, we had the rage of the superman intellectuals. They showed us what supermen they were in art by throwing out natural forms and in music by throwing out melody, harmony and rhythm. The effort in music completely failed. No good FM classical station plays that stuff anymore because nobody wants to listen to it, including the announcers. In museums the results have been mixed, probably because "modern" art is mixed in with a lot of other art that people actually want to look at (and by "people," I mean human people).

Oh, I think it's way bigger than that. I suppose styles have changed over the centuries, with trends being somewhat enforced by patrons and all that, but really, when art is driven forward, it's almost always due to artist in the driver's seat.

Now, what influenced the artists? Was it photography? Was it politics? The industrialization of the world? War? Technology? Ease of travel? The rise of leftism?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, and a thousand things more, yes.

And yet still, it's the artist themselves. All those factors needed the people who pushed the art world into the direction they did.

The logic of retail groceries is that you make your money on beer and wine, at least out here in the West..

Refusing to sell a well liked product is cutting your own throat, especially if you can be shown, as a retailer, by doing so you dislike the strongly held values of your customers who can go somewhere else.

I think it goes beyond that. No one person is responsible for where we are and just removing a couple individuals isn't going to fix it.

It is, as it's always been, a fundamental decision of who runs the country, the people or the government. We've allowed over time the government to take on a role they were never designed to hold, our master. We've got to get back to a point where everyone or at least an overwhelming majority understand that we the people run the government and it works for us.

That's always been my core definition of conservatism. Everything else is just process.

316 Remember that art is still a vocation - it's not just a calling. Why did art change? Because what was notable changed. In fact, that's always been the case - people love the style of the Old Masters, but how many people here have heard of, say, Francesco Montemezzano? There were hundreds of old masters of great skill, and only a handful were even famous in their own time, and even fewer have had lasting fame.

Nowadays, lots of artists have the skill to duplicate the Old Masters style, but that's only profitable as cheap reproductions - or, for those of lower moral fiber, the art forgery market.

Of course, some painters are of such rare skill that their canvasses can't be well duplicated - Vermeer is a good example. Fakes of his well-known paintings are usually easy to detect as fakes, and the guy who made his bones doing fake Vermeers (Han Van Meegeren) made up 'new' paintings from whole cloth and passed them off as early Vermeers to explain the less sophisticated technique.

342 CBD, Thanks for posting this. If it's typical of that museum's stuff, you saved me a trip to NYC.

Photography, in theory, can be used to create art but I think it's more difficult to do so for several reasons. I believe most photographers are too interested in the technical aspects of using the camera to give the scene enough consideration. They may get a shot that is 'interesting' but I don't regard it as art. I've made some artistic photos that would qualify, judging by peoples' reactions, but it isn't easy.

A painter can rough in a scene, make endless corrections to meet his desires, then spend huge amounts of time refining the final image. The photographer has to have everything in place before using the camera. Imagine "Night Watch" as a photo project: arranging the people, their outfits and accessories, posing them, arranging the desired lighting, framing the shot, choosing the camera and type of film to capture the scene as envisaged, and so forth.

The times I've done successful 'art' photos required the willingness to create the scene in my head, arrange everything repeatedly to match my thoughts, etc. I don't believe most photographers want to take that kind of time or trouble and that limits them. And with the advancement of digital photography, the user seems more content to let the camera do the 'work'. Another limitation.

True. Creative people want to do things differently from the way they have been done before. It's not that the early 20th century painters lacked skill - they didn't want to do traditional landscapes and portraits.

(Of course, I'm not sure you can say that about 21st century artists. I don't know what kind of technical training they get - maybe they really can't draw to save their lives.)

Yep. Look at how all of the agencies are reacting not just the intelligence community. They are almost all in open revolt from the EPA to the Department of Education to HHS, they truly believe that they are in charge of the government and they will attempt to crush anyone who tries to upset the natural order.

Draining the swamp won't be successful if all Trump does is chop a few heads. There needs to be fundamental reordering of things where these career bureaucrats are made to understand that they serve the duly elected government and if they won't comply then they need to leave or they will be made to leave.

In the 'everyone gets a medal' age, you might not need much skill, but yeah, even in the age of Dadaism, pop art and abstract expressionism, to get through art school you were expected to be able to duplicate the techniques of the Old Masters. (Not perfectly, obviously, but you learned to paint in that style.)

Check out the movie Art School Confidential.

There's a scene where, in a first year art class, our main character is given a task to draw a portrait. He draws it straight with pencil. When he comes to class, every other student has drawn them in a variety of styles, but none classically.

Everyone heaps praise on every portrait except the classically done one by our main character. They tear it apart for being, if memory serves, pompous and egotistical.

Prior to its sudden revival as a trendy shopping/restaurant area, it was where the meat packing industry was located.

I used to think that this idea was another bad legacy of the 19th century. Like, in music:

19th century - composer has to create original/individual works
20th century - composer has to invent an idiosyncratic musical language
21st century - everything is dead and ruined

539 441 ... IMG, I think that is a factor. Digital cameras offer very inexpensive photos per shot and give almost immediate results compared to film. But I believe those conveniences get in the way of a creative or contemplative approach to the photo. It doesn't have to be that way but usually is. I also believe the great amount of automated features, again convenient, keep most people from learning to use the full capabilities of the camera to capture exactly what they want.

Here's a weird analogy. Using film to create art is like hunting with just a few cartridges. You have to take the time and trouble to make everything just right to be effective. :-)

556 I enjoy photography for different reasons than I do fine art, its more an appreciation for the beauty captured rather than beauty portrayed.

Art is, simply, a vision of the transcendent captured in media. Its not simply the image its self, but what you see beyond and through it which is greater than the image or our ordinary lives that makes it art. Modern art is mostly about evoking emotion, which is sophistry in media, its just empty emotional manipulation without content or meaning.

611 I checked out Rembrandt's home while in Amsterdam some time back. He was a comic book or newsprint illustrator. His deal was etching. Etching meant reproduction and wider distribution. A lot of his stuff wasn't much larger than a postage stamp.

Another thing that occurred to me later was the role glass windows played in painting and art. Handmade Glass for windows was either stained or if clear, rippled and wavy. Looking through a glass window in Rembrandt's home turned the landscape outside into an impression of landscape, a landscape through a prism. I think impressionists basically went with this when painting. I think this is true with Monet and Van Gogh palette heavy stuff.

"Here are facts you just don't know because y'all ignant": proceeds to state things about the gender non-binary and so on and so forth because such things are beyond dispute and we must just not have heard of them and all. Followed by disgust, patronizing and invective because we didn't agree to her totally obvious and factual mindthoughts, you see. And the "pulling rank" via educational status because we're all high school dropouts or something.

It was nearly a singularity of being disappeared up one's own fundament... or singularity if you will.

Just, do it. Walbridge to Columbus, passing cars on US 23 like they were standing still, somebody asked the conductor if there was a way to tell how fast we were going. He took out his watch and counted phone poles for half a minute. "95." Under the coaling tower at Marion.

But, fail not to find someplace to stand within a block of the tracks and watch as she comes through. Jesus Christ. The earth shakes, and strong men weep.

616 She obviously wasn't here to learn. She was here to have her pre-conceived notions verified like an anthropologist following up on someone else's research.

B. Can you point to the West Bank on a map?

C. Pics or it didn't happen.

617 612 I thought she was a joke. I had no idea she was an actual "real liberal" with an assignment from a prof. That kind of backstory reeks of a Moron sock. Which is why I didn't believe her. Which makes more sense as to why she disappeared.

Hey, if you can't hang with the big boys, get off the ride.

Old trains are so cool. Motorhead even had a good song about them.

Iron child from a Vulcan's forge, metals scream and thrash
red steel in the driving wheel, hear the pistons clash
Black dragon breathing big black smoke, howling up the track

I'm riding on the thunder chief , spit in the devils eye
no force on earth can stop me now, I'd like to see them try

hey, hey riding with the driver

624 I wonder how well she'd have reacted if people had understood she was real to start with. I suspect not great, but who knows? One would expect a blog so widely described as "rambunctious" and up to "shenanigans" in the comments would prepare people for a rocky landing.

I missed that day, but I'm guessing she was expecting some sort of indirect discussion that one might get somewhere like Fox News, where there is a lot of Trump hate right now, BTW. She was probably expecting "moderate democrats" and actually got Honey Badger.

Probably had no idea there were things like socks used here, and that this can be a rough room. Not because everyone is mean, but because there's a very low level of tolerance for liberal stupidity.

628 BFA '80 here--I was taught way back then that art is that which uses a medium to communicate with an audience, whether that be pigment, or light, or sound, or movement, and so on.
The problem, with much of modern art (IMO) is that the audience has become the medium with which the author communicates with themself.
All too often, the sound of one hand fapping.

629 Brave Paymets? Is this new as of the latest update?

Looks like you can set up regular donations to sites you support, as an offset to having ads blocked through the Brave browser.

Is Ace aware of this? Does he have to get set up to receive these payments?

I'd be interested in a thread on this subject and how we could all find an appropriate level of support for this site while blocking ads.

633 "Any of us that are young enough to remember Apollo...

There were ALWAYS Soviet "fishing trawlers" off Cape Kennedy back in the day."

Saw one myself there in the late 80s. Challenger was on the launchpad, my dad and I were on a deep sea fishing boat, and there was an American nuclear sub in Port Canaveral. Got outside the harbor, and there's a "fishing trawler".

A couple of jets came by and flew over it a little bit later.

Didn't catch any fish that day, but damn.

"So she learned we don't trust anthropologists who treat us like a previously unknown tribe."

A relative in journalism had one of those benign-sounding "we must learn more about the people who voted for Trump" posts on social media, but when anyone engaged it quickly devolved into the ism/ist/phobe generalizations that some have a very hard time seeing are every bit as bigoted as what they ascribe to the people they so label.
I said avoiding "Meade does Samoa" might be a more helpful approach for anyone actually interested in learning anything about the people they supposedly wanted to "dialogue" with, and received a dramatic private message to the effect that I was a blood traitor who was stalking her for the purpose of relentless bullying.

I used to respond to about one in a dozen of her posts, if that.

Unfollowed.
