Sarah Silverman Spots Swastikas Painted All Over the Sidewalks, Overt Symbols of a Coming Nazi Takeover.
Or Wait, Maybe Not So Much.

Jim Geraghty documents a particularly deranged case of hysterical hallucination from increasingly unhinged former comedienne Sarah Silverman.

It's both funny and sad -- and also, scary.

Because these people are honest-to-God insane, and that's going to be trouble.

No, Sarah, it's a symbol for a utility line being under the street. You know, so people digging in the streets don't break electric, gas, or water lines.

That's the funny part of it -- the clueless ignorance of these people.

But Geraghty gets to the sad and frightening part:

The best line in the otherwise deeply-disappointing Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: "Your focus determines your reality."

This is the "secret" to a lot of self-help books, including The Secret. (Whoops, spoiler alert.) It isn't magic or the Force, it's mostly psychology: Whatever you look for, you tend to find. If you walk around believing that the world is out to get you, you will find circumstances and examples to fit that belief. If you walk around thinking life is full of opportunities, you will perceive more of life’s circumstances as potential opportunities.

He then ties this "looking for signs of Naziism" to the new past-times of attacking Nazis (or suspected Nazis, or bitcoin enthusiasts).

I keep making the case that this must be viewed as a very serious and dangerous outbreak of mass hysteria, collective hysteria, or mass delusion on the left.

In sociology and psychology, mass hysteria (also known as collective hysteria, group hysteria, or collective obsessional behavior) is a phenomenon that transmits collective illusions of threats, whether real or imaginary, through a population in society as a result of rumors and fear (memory acknowledgment).

People have literally been killed due to mass hysteria, of course. This is just one of the more famous cases:

Salem witch trials (1692–93)[edit]

Adolescent girls Abigail Williams, Betty Parris, Ann Putnam, Jr., and Elizabeth Hubbard began to have fits that were described by a minister as "beyond the power of Epileptic Fits or natural disease to effect."[9] The events resulted in the Salem witch trials, a series of hearings leading to the executions of 20 citizens and the deaths of five citizens of Salem Village, Massachusetts (present day Danvers, Massachusetts) and nearby towns accused of witchcraft.[10] The episode is one of America's most notorious cases of mass hysteria, and has been used in political rhetoric and popular literature as a vivid cautionary tale about the dangers of isolationism, religious extremism, false accusations and lapses in due process.[11]

The past year has taught me -- by watching the media and the NeverTrumpers emerge from their group huddles on Twitter and listservs full of fear and fire -- that most information is not rationalized into people. It's socialized into them. People have a need to belong, and sharing in a group creed gives them a sense of security and a sort of spiritual North Star.

It makes people feel good to agree with each other. There is very little more exciting in the world than being on the same wavelength with another human being. (It occurs to me that this is what makes the couple of hours before a first sexual encounter so narcotic -- you are both vibing with the exact same thought.)

Even better -- being on the same wavelength as lots of other people. Half the reason people go to a rock concert isn't to see the band, but to experience the shared sense of excitement and euphoria of 10,000 people all thinking the same thing.

This all feels good, but philosophy and policy must be about more than solidarity and shared mindthoughts.

And it's dangerous. Hysteria is a memetic virus, passed only by words and emotions (and the pheremones people give off in aroused emotional states). Delusions can be put in someone's head merely by suggestion, and when thousands of people are repeating the same delusion, that delusion is powerfully reinforced not only in newly infected carriers of the memetic virus, but in the already sick.

While contrarians are always a pain in the ass for the people they're being contrary towards, without contrarians to take a crap on the Erotic Agreement Pheromone party, people can rouse themselves into truly murderous rages, each encouraging his correligionists to go just a little bit farther and then being egged on to go a little bit farther himself -- a cycle of positively-reinforced and reinforcing extremification -- until mobs are hunting people down in the streets and grad students are building bombs in their apartments, "because Justice demands" that army enlistee's dance must be bombed.

The media is always pressuring conservatives to sound the alarm and warn their own more excitable members away from lunacy -- this is the "hot rhetoric leads to violence" theory, which I at least partly agree with -- but note that when it comes to lunacy on the left, the media is not only indulgent of increasingly unhinged to talk that leads, inexorably, to the conclusion that political opponents must be beaten, bloodied, or outright murdered, but more and more are ringleaders of the exact type of "Climate of Hate" they try to pin on the right every 4-6 years.

They have gone from being liberal scolds to outright political pornographers.

Where is Jake Tapper to warn Sarah Silverman and her likeminded lunatics of the perils of a Climate of Hate and provocative rhetoric as they are whenever conservatives seem to be "going too far"?

When the rifle bullets start cracking in the night, what will they say?

Will they pause to examine their own roles as serving as the Typhoid Marys of the political violence virus?

I doubt it.

Instead, they'll just continue using the power of suggestion, reinforced by mass repetition, to spread the virus of political lunacy.

But otherwise this is so spot on. It's perpetually re-inforced hysteria that then further emboldens those who began the hysterical memes; they must continue because there's nothing like the narcotic of mass agreement. Oh, the power!

I worry where it will end.

15 I feel like those that would foment mass hysteria for their own ends are perhaps considering that the time is finally at hand. They keep coaxing more and following the reaction and coaxing still more and gauging how much slack to give and how much tension is on the line. They are waiting for some kind of breakaway event to metastasize.

29 The political left has always been fascinated by mind control, and controlling the masses with propaganda. They luxuriate in it, lust after that power, dream of it.

The right abhors it, and seeks to use reason, facts, and logic. The closest thing to mind control the political right will us is an appeal to patriotism, which is less useful now that the left has redefined the meaning of the word.

Nailed it Ace. This insane method of tecah___ and learning has been used to condition humans rather than teach them.

there's an interesting etymology to the word "amok."

It's from Malaysian. Malays would sometimes just spontaenously run down the street, assaulting people. Sometimes others would join in the rampage, spontaneously. The fact that other human animals were doing so with impunity encouraged human animals to join them in senseless violence.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Running_amok

there's a bit of a religious justification for senselessly beating strangers:

"Amok originated from the Malay/Indonesian word mengamuk, which when roughly defined means "to make a furious and desperate charge".[5] According to Malay/Indonesian culture, amok was rooted in a deep spiritual belief.[6] They believed that amok was caused by the hantu belian,[7] which was an evil tiger spirit that entered one's body and caused the heinous act. As a result of the belief, those in Indonesian culture tolerated amok and dealt with the after-effects with no ill will towards the assailant.[8]

"Although commonly used in a colloquial and less-violent sense, the phrase is particularly associated with a specific sociopathic culture-bound syndrome in Malaysian culture. In a typical case of running amok, an individual (often male), having shown no previous sign of anger or any inclination to violence, will acquire a weapon (traditionally a sword or dagger, but presently any of a variety of weapons) and in a sudden frenzy, will attempt to kill or seriously injure anyone he encounters and himself."

That's the law in a lot of states with high density and underground utilities. The funny thing is, I bet you could ask the average lefty in a big city what those spray painted lines and designs mean and they would either say graffiti or aliens. Most have zero idea how the world works.

I mean, every little girl dreams of being a 58-year-old single stand-up comedian with no romantic prospects on the horizon. They all dream of it, but Sarah did it." (She's 43.)

Hill then added another insult: "People say it's too late for Sarah to become successful in movies at her age. I again do not agree. It's not impossible. I mean, it's not like they're asking you to bear children or anything like that."

Silverman admitted in a TV interview it took her several days to get over the insults.

I am a bipolar schizophrenic and have to put myself in check sometimes dozens of times a day. I've delt with it for long enough to be able to differentiate what is real or imagined to a level that allows me to be a productive member of society. This hysteria is genetic and encouraged. Hypocracy is embraced by self declared righteous.

I look at someone like Silverman and can't help but think it's an act, just your typical self loathing narcissistic snowflake. Your run of the mill foaming at the mouth leftist on the other hand besides being emotionally underdeveloped is definitely suffering from mental illness. It's not going to take much for these people to jump. Pushed along by the anarch-communists and a media hell bent on destroying Trump it can only end in violence. Of course when the statists and wards of the state start getting dropped it will be the violent right wing nazi extremists who are to blame. Like the protesters chanting peace while knocking out some guy or screaming about right wing violence and throwing a Molotov cocktail.

Who is going to temper this fanaticism? Half the country thinks it's fun to punch people in the face they disagree with. The government they loved 3 months ago is now the enemy and the media is pouring fuel on the fire.

Dissolution of the Union and blood in the streets. How do you win a fight with America? You don't fight, you let a poisonous political ideology, antithetical to liberty fester and destroy the system from within. Plan accordingly.

368 To put in perspective - it seems there are more and more people who grow up without...common knowledge. I mean, utility marks. Who hasn't noticed them? Who hasn't seen someone painting them? Do people not ...walk around? Not notice the marks and wonder, "Geee that is sorta funny...I wonder what they mean?" and then bother to find out?

I blame the internet - for so many people it gives the illusion of knowledge without actually providing them with the tools to figure things out.

My college theater group had an initiation night for freshman. They had to put on skits, wait on the upper classmen, stuff like that. So this one girl was tasked to make peanut butter & jelly sandwiches for everyone. The next day she pens a letter to the school newspaper about how traumatizing the experience was, & now she knows how they felt in the Nazi concentration camps. The theater President wrote a rebuttal: "So you had to make sandwiches. Waaaaah!"

612 While Geraghty's piece in NRO is on point as to Silverman, he goes WAY too gentle on her and, as is typical with that GOPe mag, he can't help himself but point fingers at the damned right that brought us Trump as well - "....this has always been the case, and that there are plenty on the Right who perceive liberal Americans as pure evil. What I think we're seeing now is an increasingly widespread eagerness to interpret innocuous symbols, events, comments, etc as further evidence of a malevolent conspiracy."

Name ONE instance where "the Right" has been eager to label something "innocuous" as part of a conspiracy - do it, don't just throw shit up to see what sticks or worse, rings the bell that can be un-rung.

You're right Geraghty, "the Right" is just like the left wherein we call everything we disagree with as "Hitler" and signs we aren't familiar with as swastikas. It's the BS relativism that infuriates many of us and why nothing gets done with the weasel RINOs are in control.

As I've recounted here before, when "Lawrence" was restored and re-released in a special run back in the late 90s/early 2000s, I saw it at an appropriate venue: the Senator theater in Baltimore. A restored big cinema of the old style.

It was great. The overture to "Lawrence" is a serious one, and the theater/concert-like atmosphere is perfectly appropriate.

Yeah no kidding. I got a fucked up story.
My grandmother was born here, but went back to Italy when she was 1 year old, and then came back to the US in 1938 because she had 2 kids and saw what the hell was going on.

years later I was visiting my grandmother when I was probably 7or 8 years old and when I walked in I see my grandmother sitting at the kitchen table, but she looked a little different. I notice on her arm there was writing of some kind and I joked and said something like grandma you drew on your arm. Just at that moment my grandmother comes walking in the room and I did a double take like wtf.

It turns out my grandmother had a twin, which being so young I had no clue, and this twin still lived in Italy and was here visiting. This twin didn't come over with my grandmother in '38, so she stayed and rode out the war.

Later in life I was told the writing on her arm was a gift from the germans. Seems the family had made a slight pain in the ass of themselves and ended up in a camp somewhere in Italy. When the Nazis were coming around looking for conscripts one of my great aunts walked up to one of the germans and said "you toucha my brother and I killa you".

How they didn't end up dead is beyond me.

675 For anyone who is seriously interested in such stuff, go to Amazon and grab a copy of Rex Applegate's 'Kill Or Get Killed.' The first half is a distilled version of the training program we put our guys through in WW2, and is worth the money for that. No sheepdog tacticool BS -- just how to train your body to react under fire.

The second half was written in the Fifties and details the rise of the 'ideologically inspired' mob, which at that point was a new and worrying development in both Americas. Read it and you will be staggered at the descriptions of the financing, the organization, the agitprop, the aim of seizing control of public spaces and marginalizing the police, of terrorizing anyone who objects and manipulating events to generate martyrs for the cause. Of constantly escalating the level of violence, of the view towards destabilizing civic life, of capitalizing on any overreaction by the authorities, and of the constant importance of ideological indoctrination. Read it. It's all there. You'll recognize it instantly.

OWS, BLM, Antifa, etc. may not be trained or financed by the KGB any more. But they are trained and led and financed by the people who were.

688 Another part of Moneyball that bugged me - Art Howe is portrayed as a buffoon clinging to antiquated notions of baseball talent because he prefers the traditional power project Carlos Pena to the versatile Hatteberg, who was better at getting on base. And sure, Hatteberg was a very nice piece for the 02 A's.

But Pena hit 286 HRs in his MLB career, almost none for the A's who gave up on him. In other words, the grizzled veteran with his disdain for fancy new metrics and his ossified notions of how to build a team...ended up being right!

Nazianity is in the line of Vox Day's term Holocaustianity. It's the practice of a paranoid delusion as cynical hustle.

Lion-whistling is taking false credit for temporal succession. You whistled and then there weren't any lions. Your whistling kept the lions away! Except no, oceans and cages did that.

So right now the left is practicing Nazianity like crazy, and later when Trump fails to reveal a secret identity of Clown Hitler and has actually been pretty reasonable, they'll gracefully pivot to lion-whistling that it was their violence and slander that kept him in check.
