The Official Army Headquarters Base of the Ace of Spades HQ Has Been Selected

After long minutes of contemplation, the III Corps Headquarters located in Fort Hood, Texas, has been chosen as the Official Army Headquarters of the Ace of Spades HQ blog.

The evidence justifying the selection of this base is unassailable and none dare stand before it:

Searching on III Corps, I also found reference to some program to rehabilitate low-level offenders (drunk drivers, etc.) in the Army into more law-abiding soldiers located at the base. That only recommends it more.

For those who can't view Twitter, 1, congrats, it's a timesuck that reduces life expectancy, and 2, here are the pictures.

Below is Frank Frazetta's immortal pulp masterpiece "Death Dealer," painted, they say, in 1973. This picture represents for men of a certain age (nearly 29) all that is good and desirous in life.

deathdealerfrazetta1973.jpg

This is a statue of the III Corps' base mascot, which they call "Phantom Warrior."

phantomwarriorIIIcorps.jpg

That mascot is so badass he tells Batman "Suck my dick" and Batman says "Maximum eye contact, or no eye contact? Sir?"

96 I saw Molly Hatchet in 1994 at a small club. At this point Danny Joe Brown was the only original left in the band. He was hammered. I remember once between songs he yelled back to the bar for somebody to send some Jim Beam up to the stage. During an extended guitar solo he walked to the back of the stage and started leaning his whole body against a stack of amps with his back to the audience. I didn't think he would make it through the show, but he did.

Posted by: Mark1971 at February 09, 2017 02:58 PM (gdnq1)

97 So, to make this clear for us non-Twitter idiots:

At Ft. Hood, there is actually a physical bronze statue of Frank Frazetta's famous 1973 painting "Death Dealer," and that this statue is regarded as some kind of unofficial "mascot" for something called "Phantom Warriors"???

True?

Further explanation? I'm still a bit confused as to the facts and why they are significant.

When they were young, Duane was sick and Gregg came by with a medicine bottle. By the time Gregg came back Duane had taught himself how to play slide guitar.

Hearing Wilson Pickett's cover of Hey Jude over in England, Eric Clapton went on a mission to find the guy who did the outro guitar lead. He expected to find an old black guy.

I've told this before:
I was in a friend's wedding once. Beautiful day, outdoor ceremony at a lovely church in Charlotte.
Across this huge expanse of lawn, a cellist & classical guitarist were setting up near the "altar" while the other guys in penguin suits and I were nipping fine bourbon out of our flasks.

From about 200 ft away, I yelled "FREEBIRD!" ,much to others' chagrin.
Then, the duo broke out into an amazing version that nobody in attendance will ever forget.
It was quite nice, but still funny as hell.

215 OT: might have missed it in earlier threads, but I absolutely love Teh Donald trashing McCain and esp. Blumenthal, personally and directly, and esp. like the trash talk about Blumenthal's despicable mendacity.

That Blumenthal can show his face, much less have high public office, after his vile and low-grade dishonesty was so spectacularly revealed, speaks to the degradation of Dem voters and the civic culture.

Hope the prez keeps it up - actually, hope he intensifies it quite a bit. McCain (who is dumber and more psycho than you imagine) can definitely be pushed to the point where he melts down and lashes out. Not that there's any standard any more, so such behavior won't open most closed eyes, but at this point there's value in merely the public torment of despicable dumb***ts like McCain.

264 Garrett, you must be a bit younger. Tom Petty is a fine musician and songwriter (and deep down, a Byrd at heart), but Lynyrd Skynyrd took what the Allman Brothers started (in Florida and much of the South, up to and including Cincinnati - but their home base was Macon GA), wrote some politically-charged lyrics, and released an anthem called "Sweet Home Alabama" that has likely been played more times than everything Petty did, combined. When my band won the Battle of the Bands at a local high school in '75, I played lead and sang when we did "Alabama" and "Free Bird", among others. Glory days, baby.

I still have .38 Special, Skynyrd, Outlaws, and a bunch of Allman Brothers on regular rotation on the iPod. Oh, and two or three Tom Petty tunes, too.

The heavy unbalanced weight and long surface make it a good headsmans axe, not a battle axe. The object is to lift the weight and mostly just guide it to the exposed neck. The heavy weight and long cutting surface makes it more likely to get it done on one chop. A scimitar is a good multi-purpose blade and is the choice of most modern day decapitators.

The axe in the illuastration is very good as it would dissuade any but the most determined to engage, but the red eyes and helmet would accomplish the same thing even if he was carrying a wooden spoon.

398 Tom Petty IMO has quite a lot of great songs. I remember looking for details some years ago. Great band, and they're all still alive! -- looking at you Randy Rhodes.

Also, it is amazing how many great songs from the Yardbirds era people forget with the one and only Jeff Beck. 'course he's done more and more interesting things since. Next to Jimi, Jeff has guitar-fu like no other. Again, MOHO, YMMV

It goes on and on, too. SRV, Eric Johnson, Malsteen (sp), Vai, Satch....
Ummm, Keith Richards also, for different reasons.

For cohesive band-sense --- Yes, ELO.

447 I miss cassettes. The way they would go all wonky and you had to rewind them with a pencil.

Then you used them to load a program onto a computer. By the sheer power of sound. Not too much sound, or too little sound, but by just the right amount of sound volume.

Recently became a fan of Jessie Dayton from his song, "Daddy Was a Badass" Great lyrics and an earworm tune. Southern rock style.

His other songs are also funny, clever, and borderline naughty.

This statue is part of the memorial at Ft Hood and was made from two
giant bronze statues of Saddam Hussein, captured in Iraq by the the 4th

Gary Numan: Are Friends Electric (more than Cars)
Chumbawamba: Amnesia (more than Tubthumping
Devo: Beautiful World (more than Whip It)

One one-hit wonder that definitely stands on its own: Ram Jam's Black Betty.

1st SFOD-D was the element that got him. The Commander would later serve as Commander Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines where I would work for him as his Intelligence Chief. He had two briefs put together, a lot of the Saddam photos including the actual photo that was given to Time magazine, and another picture of him and the two operators who pulled Saddam out giving President Bush Saddam's 9 mm pistol. 4th ID was there, but it was the Tier 1 guys who actually got him...and the famous line "President Bush sends his regards".

486 I saw Mink DeVille once as "warm-up" band to either to
Elvis Costello or Tom Petty and I enjoy their music much more
than any of the bands mentioned here -except for Allman
Bros. and (sometimes) Marshall Tucker Band. And whoever
they were opening act for? -DeVille blew them away. And I
bought some of their albums. I bought some Petty back in
those days but would never listen to them again -album rock radio burned me out on his music and his voice just gets
annoying after a while.

think of the survivor's reactions if they were loaded with fletchette rounds, and you fired all 6 barrels at once...

there might not be another riot for years: at the first sign, they'd scatter like leaves.

Posted by: redc1c4 at February 09, 2017 03:53 PM (emd4w)

I read an Osprey book about the Ontos recently and discovered that the Marines made pretty extensive use of the vehicle in Vietnam. The Marines used them as anti-personnel assault guns rather than in the anti-tank role for which the Ontos had been designed.

489 @488 Buddy of mine at work years ago was closely attached to an ONTOS, and they figured heavily in his war stories. Only trouble with them was, according to him, that you had to get out to reload. Some days, that could be a bitch.
