After long minutes of contemplation, the III Corps Headquarters located in Fort Hood, Texas, has been chosen as the Official Army Headquarters of the Ace of Spades HQ blog.

Across this huge expanse of lawn, a cellist & classical guitarist were setting up near the "altar" while the other guys in penguin suits and I were nipping fine bourbon out of our flasks.
From about 200 ft away, I yelled "FREEBIRD!" ,much to others' chagrin.
Then, the duo broke out into an amazing version that nobody in attendance will ever forget.
It was quite nice, but still funny as hell.

All I know is that my kids (late teens to late 20's) and just about all of their friends have heard of LS and can name at least one of their songs, usually 2 or 3. But almost none have even heard of Petty.
Of course, most of said friends are from deplorable places. Not all, but most.
And I suspect they would recognize some of Petty's hits when they heard them but wouldn't make the connection to a name.

The heavy unbalanced weight and long surface make it a good headsmans axe, not a battle axe. The object is to lift the weight and mostly just guide it to the exposed neck. The heavy weight and long cutting surface makes it more likely to get it done on one chop. A scimitar is a good multi-purpose blade and is the choice of most modern day decapitators.
The axe in the illuastration is very good as it would dissuade any but the most determined to engage, but the red eyes and helmet would accomplish the same thing even if he was carrying a wooden spoon.

Yep. Wife, FIL and I saw George at T-Mobile Arena Las Vegas in December around the National Finals Rodeo and he was terrific. Kasey Musgraves opened the show and earned a lot of new fans. Saw Merle Haggard two years earlier at the Golden Nugget. I'm a classic rock guy but the real country artists made me take notice.

This statue is part of the memorial at Ft Hood and was made from two giant bronze statues of Saddam Hussein, captured in Iraq by the the 4th Infantry Division, were melted down by an Iraqi artist to make a memorial to their fallen comrades. The cost of the memorial was paid for by donations from Ivy Soldiers, 4ID Association members and businesses and citizens from Central Texas and beyond.

4th ID was there, but they didn't pull Saddam from the spider hole. My commander in Mindanao was the Squadron Commander whose team brought him out. He had also been the platoon commander for Shugart and Gordon in Mogadishu.

1st SFOD-D was the element that got him. The Commander would later serve as Commander Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines where I would work for him as his Intelligence Chief. He had two briefs put together, a lot of the Saddam photos including the actual photo that was given to Time magazine, and another picture of him and the two operators who pulled Saddam out giving President Bush Saddam's 9 mm pistol. 4th ID was there, but it was the Tier 1 guys who actually got him...and the famous line "President Bush sends his regards".

bought some of their albums. I bought some Petty back in
those days but would never listen to them again -album rock radio burned me out on his music and his voice just gets

I read an Osprey book about the Ontos recently and discovered that the Marines made pretty extensive use of the vehicle in Vietnam. The Marines used them as anti-personnel assault guns rather than in the anti-tank role for which the Ontos had been designed.
