Ace of Spades Pet Thread

Is “There is a grain of truth in every joke”?

Anyway, lets have some fun this afternoon. Grab a beverage, scratch your pet's ear and enjoy.

A Little of This. A Little of That.

    MEET THE PETMORONS

    poochie1.jpg

    poochie2.jpg

Two photos of Poochie, here is the story told by our lurker friend, AbbyNormal.

I am mostly a lurker under the name AbbyNormal. I love AOS and read it everyday. I come for the commentary and stay for the comments.

This is my rescue cat Poochie. He showed up in my backyard when he was still a very young cat, scrounging for food. It was obvious he had never interacted with people, so it took me two weeks of leaving food out for him before I could touch his back with my fingertip. Of course, it helped I already had another rescue cat, Charlie, whom I fed in the backyard too, trying to lure Poochie in.

The first picture is of Poochie over a year later, using the pool cover as a trampoline. He bounces on it and makes the acorns jump so he can chase them around. The second picture shows him on the roof of the house. He is still my wild child but now he is as spoiled as the other one.

    robert cat.jpg

The Pet Thread title is Kitten Watching Pin-Head. The photo was sent in by Robert. Here is note with the photo.

The picture of Russ’ buddy Kismet brought back fond memories of GiGi, my late departed friend for seven short years. She did like to watch TV as a kitten, but lost interest as she grew up.

    sgt mom.jpg

This is Nemo. Sgt Mom submitted this photo along with some other dandies. This one is quite cute. Hopefully our former TFG won't be hungry for it. (OK cheap political shot. No more.)

    lab.jpg

Our first doggeh of the day. C'mon dog owners. Do Cats Rule and Dogs Drool?

Because the cat isn't nearly as photogenic. My dog Toblerone, a Chocolate Lab, post-surgery to remove lipomas, doing a heck of a job sporting the tie-dye.

From "Lee Also," long-time lurker, occasional commenter. Love AoS and read EVERY day!!!

Thanks Lee Also, appreciate the kind words and the photo!

    Lurker 1.jpg

    lurker 2.jpg

OK. The pressure is on your humble Cob. I hope I picked out the right photos. Here is a little info on these photos from Lurker Sally.

I know these are way too many pics of our stunning cat Xavier. I'm a lurker, no creative handle. But love the site and always take time to enjoy the pet thread and your thoughtful comments. I always wondered at folks who sent in pics and then said the pet was no longer with us. But now I know how that happens. You love your pets as part of your day to day life, but when they pass you want to share. X had personality for 2 cats. Great tabby markings and extra long legs. We adopted him as a kitten and we had a small house. We live outside of Portland Oregon but I'm from Cincinnati. We had a Xavier University shot glass which became his first water glass and his name. We lived in an old craftsman style bungalow with a slightly shredded screen door. He pushed his little head again it and broke out. From then on when we had the door open he would jump through the hole in the screen door to get in and out. He would jump in at a run and stop as if to say "ta da, I'm here!" Xavier left us due to kidney failure just after Thanksgiving. I know you will pick and edit well. Nothing like a cat in the sun, sunspot, in front of the fire or in a box! I don't know how you will pick!

    horse.jpg

Last but not least a trifecta of pets. PaleRider submitted this photo. Here is the story behind it.

A cute picture of the "high strung" Arabian Shade, Sven the cat and Ole the dog, cat and dog named from Sven and Ole jokes.

Sven and Ole have crossed the rainbow bridge. Shade is enjoying retired life.

Thank you for the pet photo submissions. A fine group of "critters". Do you have a funny video, animal story or a photo you would like to share? If you do, please submit them to petmorons at gmail.

    See you folks next week.

3 Nice group of pets. Woof.

Our dog Scout has a lump on the side of his face. I thought maybe he got stung or something since he likes to chase bees but it's not going down after a couple days. It doesn't seem to bother him though even if I touch it.

6 We acquired a new dog recently, on the theory that our old dog needed somebody to run and play with. Boy howdy. Chews, bays, gets me up at the crack of dawn, but is a really sweet guy. Old dog is like "What have you DONE???" I ask myself the same thing.

13 freaked, my doggie got a couple of bee stings around her eye and it took about 3 weeks for the swelling to go down and heal fully. I wound up taking her to the vet bc I got worried and she kept scratching it and broke it open causing it to bleed profusely. She got an antibiotic and a steroid shot at the vets. I would watch it closely. If it's not bothering him then that's good.

15 Love this week's pets. We have a roof-climber like Poochie.

And PaleRider, that is one set of high-strung pets. Nice memories of the pair in front, I would imagine.

Our old Warrior Princess had a shower last night. What a project. We imagine that she is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and and German Shepherd. Kind of a comical body type. She has fine, soft Cocker fur and German Shepherd ears. Her fur holds a lot of water and dries slowly.

This reminds me to mention that there was a recent pic of Bo, I think at DM, of a dog walker taking the pooch for a stroll outside TFG's new DC digs.

Going waaaay back to near the start of TFG's reign of error, he hosted an expensive donor dinner, but soon left after not eating and making a few brief remarks. His reason for leaving so soon?

He had to go walk the dog.

A dog with a filter tip is my guess.

Years ago I had a roommate who kept a big saltwater tank. Actually, he had two tanks. He also had a small tank where he kept the goldfish that he would feed to the big fish in that saltwater tank. Eels and lion fish are the two I remember most, but there were some others as well. They made quick work of the goldfish.

I've been worried about my cat Kira for the last couple of months. She always had a voracious appetite, and when she started picking at her food and leaving some of it on the plate I became concerned.

In December she went in for an ultrasound to follow up a pre-existing heart condition. I mentioned the loss of appetite, and they weighed her and found she had lost weight since her previous exam. So they did bloodwork and found elevated kidney values.

They switched her food to Royal Canin Renal Support, which would be easier on her kidneys, but she still wasn't eating much.

Last weekend I took her to the groomer and he said, "Did you know she has a lump under her skin?" I had noticed it, but thought I was feeling part of her ribcage due to her weight loss.

So last night I took her to the vet and they took a sample and sent it off to the lab for analysis. I should hear back in a few days.

The good news is the vet gave me another food to try, Hills Kidney Care, and she vacuumed it right up. So maybe she just didn't like the other food.

Kira will turn 17 on Feb. 20. I know her birthdate because she was born in my bedroom closet. I've known her literally since she was a newborn and could fit in the palm of my hand.

76 Kitty BunBun is no more. I took him to the vet on Thursday. It's a new vet because I the old one was a VCA location and they are being bought by Mars which owns Banfield. In the article I read about this merger, the spokesman for Mars said something about kidney transplants for pets which I think is obscene. I know they could have done a biopsy for Bunnie and determined if it was IBD or lymphoma but since his kidneys were wonky on ultrasound in addition to his intestines being thicker than they should have been, I wasn't about to do anything more invasive. I gave him a few weeks of steroids and he was playful enough to put off one euthanasia appointment but I realized finally that he was getting tired of playing very, very quickly and wasn't diving (literally diving between bed and wall) so much to retrieve his yarnball, so it was finally time to let him go.

He was such a funny little guy. I'm probably repeating myself but his name was short for Snugglebunnie because when I got him, I brought him home and I sat down and he curled up on my left shoulder and pretty much never left except against his will. He would even love on people at the vet's office - I've never had another cat who wasn't totally traumatized by leaving home and going to the vet, but he would rub up on anyone who walked into the exam room and, unlike my dog, never looked for treats at all. He would always settle in for snuggles on my chest after I went to bed and then he would get bored and go sleep somewhere else but I would always find him on me when I woke up the next morning.

I need to be independently wealthy so I can start running Mother Tonestaple's Home for Wayward Kittumses. Then I never have to run out.

83 Many years ago, my cat Monty (may she rest in peace) got herself stuck on the roof. We had a rancher, one level, so it wasn't like she was waaaaay up there, but as far as she was concerned, not to mention me, it might as well have been Mt. Everest. I wasn't about to go climbing up there to get her, so I lined her favorite wicker laundry basket with a thick towel and held it up, urging her to "Jump Monty! Jump!" She paced back and forth, meowing her head off, but finally did it. I had to brace for impact. Even a little 8-pound kitty leaping off a roof will make an ooomph! of a landing. I was thrilled that she trusted me enough to jump, relieved I didn't drop the basket, and thankful not to have to call the Fire Dept.

It is my prayer with any aging or ailing pet that god give me wisdom or if need be a cluebat to the head when it is time to let go; it can be a dance between providing extra care that just takes a little extra time and money versus clinging to them for sentimentally and not accepting reality that they are hurting or tired.

At the time I was living in an apartment. I had never had a cat before, but I totally bonded with my neighbor's cat Chloe. Eventually I started cat-sitting on weekends when my neighbor went away.

We both knew Chloe was pregnant. I noticed that she started spending time in my closet. I took the hint, and cleared out a space for her and put down towels.

One Sunday afternoon I was sitting on the couch watching TV. Chloe got up on the couch, then started tossing and turning like she couldn't get comfortable. I said, "Chloe, do you think it's time to go in the closet?"

Without hesitation, she got off the couch and went in the closet. I gave her about an hour of privacy, then went in and saw her with her new litter.

    Aw, that's rough.

It's good that you both got some extra play time. Cats are really good at hiding when they're not well; playing the same old games instead really speaks to your relationship.

If they didn't mean so much when they're here, it wouldn't hurt so much when they leave. I'll take that trade-off.

Jinx is a mini copy of Xavier, down to the rings on the front legs.

Yes, it does. Our last two kitties lived to be 18. One finally had to be euthanized because of kidney failure. The other, who was a gorgeous white fellow, had developed dementia.

Broke our hearts losing them. They were both older than our son at the time, and he had grown up with them.

Tonestaple, your BunBun sounds like an angel. Our Spanky is similar at the vet. She reaches her "arms" up to be held by the staff (loves a good shoulder). They all love her.

94 Another fine group of pet morons!
So sorry for those of us who have lost pets.
I have beside me my black and white (tuxedo) female cat who is 20. She still has a loud purr and loves to chase the red laser dot, so who knows, she could outlast me.

Dexter, the blue and white cat, a male, is about 7 and he seldom purrs. The only time he purrs is when we take a nap together and he cuddles up in my right armpit (don't ask). He is very healthy and very talkative. I can ask him a question and he always responds.

The step dog down the street, I watch him when his owners go on vacay, he is about 10 years old, and is still very active. He will chase the ball until my arm is about to fall off. He is a BBD (basic black dog). Not a labrador. I've no idea what he is, he is about 40 lbs.

She's a lovey one too, Tonestaples kitty sounded a lot like her. She brought another skittish elder cat out of his shell just by persistence and face-licking, and her hobbies are basically bouncing, mrrping, and head-butting people. And doing everything she can to achieve her biological imperative of being stepped on.

I have a simple hopper-fed gravity feeder for them, and while he paws the food out of the hole when it doesn't drop free, she purrs and nuzzles the feeder until the blockage comes loose and the food falls into the bowl.

I'm watching Joanna Lumley's "The Wonderful World of Cats" and she's visiting a Japanese lady who makes clothes for cats (ironically, some hats have ears). She dresses her long-suffering cat in a Musketeer getup complete with cape and hat.

I had a very well-tempered cat who would let me dress her up in baby clothes and wheel her around in a buggy (hey, I was 4 yrs old) for maybe three minutes, and then shows over kid.

Does this Japanese lady feed her kitty muscle relaxers?

Both really sweet dogs, but they would fixate if they were trying to get a rabbit or something, it was easy to see how hard it would be to stop one that was in an attack mode, so the bad reputation is there for a reason, but they are big sweeties when properly raised as a pet.

    Oh My Goodness, YES.
I don't want to be dramatic, but having this shithead dropped in my lap was a blessing. Changed my thinking, to say the least.
I hate people, but a pet fills a tiny void.

And, puppy! Hello? Who doesn't love a puppy?

145  Gushka, Back problems keeping you down?

Posted by: Ben Had at February 11, 2017 06:44 PM (QlQnE)

Back is the only thing that doesn't hut. I have the WORST FLU EVER. body ache, teeth ache i'm a mucous factory and my sinuses are screaming. Worst of all I dumped coffee on myself this morning in bed and could not get the cats to change the sheets for me. I had just changed the bed. Fat Cats are a great consolation, but i miss my dogs. The cats keep trying to take over my heating pad. Worst of all, it's lovely sunny and not too warm... I wanna get horses out, but I'm just too sick.

146 A belated hello to the Pet Thread and its fans. Always nice to see photos of pet morons, submitted by those who love them.

Great work, as always, Mis. Hum.

147 Gushka, I find that cats are of no help with chores. I'm sorry to hear you're sick. Prayers up that you'll be on the mend soon. (Maybe Gushka has cats what pray?)
