Letter To The President
I have just done something I have never done before. I have written a letter to the president. Not even in the days of 9/11 have I felt so moved to do this. It's just that with every day there's a new yelly, shouty, Soros-funded attack that I'm afraid President Trump will be tempted to cave in. I think he needs to be encouraged not to do this. As Rush points out, he really doesn't have any support, not from the opposition party, not from the media, not from academia, not even from elements in his own party, nobody except from those of us who voted for him, and perhaps those of you who did not vote for him, but do not want to see him destroyed by a howling mob of imbeciles. So I encourage all of you to go to this link, bring up the e-mail form, and write an encouraging note to the president. Here is what I told him:
Mr. President--
Ever since your inauguration, there has been nothing but hysterical, dialed-up-to-11 outrage coming at you from the Democrats, the media, and even elements in the Republican Party. George Soros is undoubtedly bankrolling some of this ginned up outrage. Even so, I have never seen anything like this before in my life. I love it that you are apparently that big a threat to the status quo. And the last thing America needs right now is a go-along-to-get-along status quo politician. Mr. President, please stay the course. Please do not go wobbly on us. It's probably going to get worse before it gets better, but I think you know this. Please, please PLEASE do not back down from any of your proposals or nominations. If you do, your enemies will only smell blood in the water and come at you even harder. Plus, you'll only discourage those of us who want to support you. This is no "well, we disagree on policy" dispute. They want to destroy your presidency and they want to destroy you personally. If you did not know this when you started your campaign, you probably know it now. Mr. President, I know you're a fighter. I voted for you because I could see you were a fighter. But now you're in the fight of your life. The attacks are coming at you fresh and new every day. Please do not allow yourself to think that if you give in to their demands, you will avoid conflict. This is a lie, and I'm sure you know this. Illegitimi non carborundum, Mr. President. Do not let the bastards grind you down. My wife and I pray for daily. If you are sick of all the local news coverage of these protests, call/ email your local tv station and complain. Tell them they do not represent you or your family, and their focus on these idiots has caused you to turn off their station, and you will not watch them until they become unbiased.
Conversely, if you really want to harm them, note the advertisers on your local news. Then write them and say that you feel your local news is encouraging these protestors and are too political. Since they advertise on the station, they are encouraging that. Consequently, you will no longer buy their products or patronize their business until they stop advertising with that station.

I think you're right, and I think that result comes down to how easy it is to spin the tone of your message as being positive. Bush had a pretty hard sell. Right after 9/11, most of the country agreed that we needed to go over there and hit them before they hit us again. But by 2004 and 2006, the immediate shock of 9/11 was gone. Staying in Iraq and nationbuilding was the right thing to do (both morally and strategically), but it's a hard sell. To do it right will cost billions of dollars and many american lives (which the MSM reminded us about daily). The base of their message was "it's just not worth it" they could take the easy path. And because it was the easy one, the people without strong convictions followed.
It's different now. Trump=Hitler is the entirety of their argument. They're offering no appeal to Trump's supporters or people on the fringe. A lot of people think "well, maybe it is a good idea to pause refugee program, when there are clearly a lot of bad people over there that I don't think I want in my neighborhood." I think the default position of most people is to support Trump in a lot of these things. So when the left comes in and says "you're literally a Nazi for feeling this way" then they're much more likely to get someone to stiffen up and say "well that's bullshit" than to get them to buckle.
The left has to make the nuanced, difficult, case. Not Trump. And they're not capable of doing that because of their irrational outrage.

I have a friend that hosts an Oscars party every year and goes all out for it. She would be bitterly disappointed should it be canceled. I predict they do it, because they can't help themselves, and make it full lefty political. It's going to be a bumpy night watching all that, sigh.
Never try to get between Hollywood and a chance to pat themselves on the back. Scaling it back to the simplicity of the very first Academy Awards would do them a lot of good. It'll never happen though.

If you are sick of all the local news coverage of these protests, call/ email your local tv station and complain. Tell them they do not represent you or your family, and their focus on these idiots has caused you to turn off their station, and you will not watch them until they become unbiased.
Conversely, if you really want to harm them, note the advertisers on your local news. Then write them and say that you feel your local news is encouraging these protestors and are too political. Since they advertise on the station, they are encouraging that. Consequently, you will no longer buy their products or patronize their business until they stop advertising with that station.

This-writing the advertisers on local stations-is an excellent idea. Our local stations in Michigan are very slanted-especially the NBC station, and even though I don't watch them for that reason, their sponsors should know.
As for the letter to President Trump, I did that yesterday! I felt compelled to do it. He is strong and a fighter, but even strong fighters might need to know they are appreciated.
Concerning the "bad roll out" ( which is how I have heard it described) of the immigration policy, I personally do not see President Trump as a person who does not learn from his mistakes. He is learning constantly and improving constantly and , I hope, will continue doing so.
Another thing we can do, though, is figuring out how to do better at primaring the treacherous RINOs.

In my last position we worked on a turnaround company. It was sort of like a startup, but with decent funding, and 900 employees. Every step we took we were told that it wouldn't achieve the desired outcome. But we went ahead anyway, knowing we were right, and booked success after success after success. In the meantime we did our best to educate those who were open to new ideas but simply ignored (or removed) those who made it clear that they weren't.
Trump doesn't care about press approval. He knows the press argue that he should take a position of weakness. And that's somehting he can never abide. He has decades of experience in the solitude of leadership. And it shows. So I'd bet that he's less likely to go soft than any other President in living memory.
I confess I didn't think he would be this good. But I'm thrilled to admit I was wrong.

I think my biggest fear regarding Trump is people will get so tired of
the constant outrage and screaming, they will dump Trump just to get

I posted something similar upthread, but I don't think this is going to happen. The circumstances are different. The left didn't start with BusHitller in 2001. They ramped up to it. And even then, that wasn't the crux of their argument. In 2004-2006, they had a very easy case. "The war just isn't worth it." And they backed that case up with a constant stream of stories about the soldiers that died in Iraq and stories about how bad the economy was going and the deficit. Bush had to make a difficult case for himself. He had to explain that it was worth it, and yes, these things are bad, but we need to stick it out because the alternative would be worse, and in the end it'll be better. He didn't make that case very well, and by 2008, enough people fell into the "it's not worth it" camp.
This time, Trump is the one that gets to make the easy case. "I want to stop people from getting into the country that want to harm you." That's what people on the margins hear when they just hear about his EO. And the gut reaction that a lot of people have is "good." The left has to make a much more nuanced argument this time. That his action does not help his stated goal. But they're not doing that. They're going straight for the character assassination. Anyone who supports this is a Nazi. When you pressure people with such an extreme version of the argument like that, you don't persuade them to change their views. You get them to dig their heels in.

Yes, the first Bush years were odd for the Dems.
They opened up complaining that he wasn't doing anything about the Taliban because he didn't care about women.
Then 9/11 happened and we invaded Afghanistan.
Feminists were confused for a bit and disappeared...later they would argue he deposed the Taliban...because he didn't care about women.
In 2002 the Dems ran on a platform of war with Iraq and that unlike that wuss Bush they would win the WoT. They believed at the time that Americans agreed with them on domestic policy and adopting a pro-war stance would allow them to win the off year elections.
They were wrong...and confused again.
They spend 2002-4 going back and forth between arguing that Bush was incompetently fighting the Iraq war, which they could win, and that we should cut an run.
And they were shocked when they lost again in 2004. It wasn't really until after that election that they 100% jumped on the no war for oil bandwagon. Perhaps more importantly, in 2004 Bush put pressure on the Saudis for internal reform and the Saudis started bankrolling the Dems and the "anti-war" effort.

there is a deep streak of melancholy running through many (most?) of them.
When Japan chose the Keynesian/leftard economic solution to enrich the elites,

There's a particularly unusual anime (yes, I know, I repeat myself) that aired a few years ago called 'C'. It features a more or less normal modern world. The weirdness is that the main characters are all part of a group who duel each other using familiars with attacks named after economic terms.
Reason I bring it up is because the antagonist (who means well) tries to help Japan by repeatedly causing massive inflation of the quantity of Yen in circulation. The results are predictable.

There are certainly many Republican elected officials who are beyond redemption.
I am wondering however, we have many many regulars here, who, let's be honest, don't want to give up on the "status quo." They LIKE the way Republicans operate, and like the benefits they derive from business as usual.
If this WAS a usual Republican Administration, I would imagine some of them would be jostling for their goodies, and essentially Trump isn't giving them any.
So... the question is, how long? How long do we wait for Establishment Republicans who are otherwise just ordinary citizens, to get on board?
I'm sure some would say their time is already past. I don't know. I really don't.

Obama won in 2012 in a landslide and carried both houses of Congress in with him. I was not willing to offer him or any of his minions even a minimal level of cooperation. Nor did they have any interest in my cooperation or even the most minimal negotiation or hearing of an alternate opinion. "I won", "Elections have consequences", etc.
I was not a Trump supporter but, damn it, the weasel wearing bastard is earning quite a bit of respect from me. I still don't agree with a lot of shit he says but, damn, credit where it's due. At 40 yrs aged, You are the first republican I have voted for for the white house. I see that all the powers in our sick society are arrayed against you and you have stood strong amid their rage. Dusted yourself off and tried to out manuevr them as best as you can.
My white wife and I have 3 young boys and we deeply worry about the future they would inherit and the world which puts all its hate and blame squarely on their sweet innocent shoulders.
You were already rich and famous and would have weather the future in comfort, safety, and luxury. We the silent white working class will not. I thank you for making your family, fame, and fortune a target to serve our country and us your fellow countrymen.
We thank you! We love you! We pray the Lord support you! And when the time comes deal with our enemies who have slipped their mask please know that we back you 100% balls deep!
